Now, it is generally agreed that the Neoproterozoic origins of animals and multicellularity are at least partly related to genetic challenges (e.g., Butterfield, 2018); however, the simultaneous explosion in body size, morphological features, and skeletonization in the Cambrian is almost certainly the result of external \u201ctriggers\u201d (e.g., Erwin et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2014; Schiffbauer et al., 2016), the nature of which have been widely debated.
