But interacting with new and diverse social partners also offers benefits, like novelty, a sense of belonging, and future friendship. A healthy social network therefore balances social exploitation (investing in familiar relationships) and social exploration (interacting with strangers and embracing differences). In this talk, I first present survey and experience sampling data that suggests preferences for spending time with friends versus acquaintances predict distinct patterns in well-being and social network structure. Despite its benefits, social exploration comes with challenges: it can be harder to connect and or find common ground with dissimilar others. Drawing on sociocentric network data, I show that successful exploration hinges not just on who we meet, but how we perceive them:\u00a0perceived similarity, more than actual similarity, predicts outcomes like belonging and even shared laughter. These findings suggest that the explore-exploit tradeoff in social life is not just about who we spend time with, but how we bridge the unfamiliar into the familiar.\r\n\r\nAbout the series:\r\n\r\nHumans are social animals and from the earliest days of life, are dependent on the quality of social relationships with significant others: family, kin, friends, and a growing social network of online acquaintances. But, how do we conduct research and come to understand the social processes transpiring in these significant social connections with others? What are the consequences for individual development and mental health outcomes of having close intimate relationships in one\u2019s life? There is also a darker side to some relationships in the form of violence, aggression, and conflict. How do we study these processes? Social media and artificial intelligence have opened up new ways of thinking about \u201cwhat is a social relationship?\u201d and how many of these \u201cfriends\u201d can one truly have.\r\n\r\nThe speakers for this series will focus on different types of social relationships, spanning family and parent-child relationships, friendships, peer networks, romantic relationships, attachment relationships, and the use of online media to maintain social connections. Although several speakers are senior scholars with extensive research backgrounds in the field, many are junior scholars who are traversing new paths into the science of social relationships. The conversation will explore the complex and challenging experiences faced by farmworkers today, as well as their heightened precarity due to the policies of the current administration, through the lens of academic research, public health, visual storytelling, and legal advocacy.\r\n\r\nMeet the Participants:\r\n\r\nNarsiso Martinez (b. 1977, Oaxaca, Mexico) came to the United States when he was 20 years old. He attended Evans Community Adult School and completed high school in 2006 at the age of 29. He earned an Associate of Arts degree in 2009 from Los Angeles City College. In the fall of 2012 Narsiso earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach. In the spring of 2018 he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from California State University Long Beach, and was awarded the prestigious Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship in Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited both locally and internationally. His work is in the collections of the Hammer Museum, OCMA, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, University of Arizona Museum of Art, Long Beach Museum of Art, Crocker Art Museum, Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Martinez lives and works in Long Beach, CA.\r\n\r\nDr. Iglesias-Rios\u2019s research interests are the intersection of environmental and occupational health with precarious employment and labor exploitation in vulnerable populations. Her previous research assessed the impact of labor trafficking by studying how patterns of violence and coercion affect the mental health of female and male trafficking survivors including children, adolescents and adults. She also sought to understand how the living and working conditions during trafficking affect the mental health of survivors. Dr. Iglesias-Rios is the Co-Investigator of the Michigan Farmworker Project, a community-based participatory project that assess the working and living conditions of migrant and seasonal farmworkers in the state of Michigan. The focus of the research is to investigate indicators of precarious employment and labor exploitation that involve psychosocial, occupational and environmental exposures and complex contextual conditions (social, economic and physical milieu) of farmworkers.\r\n\r\nAmanda Krugliak is a curator and artist known for performative, conceptual, and experiential installations, in charge of programming for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery since 2009. In 2012, she co-created the internationally recognized installation *State of Exception *with artist Richard Barnes and U-M anthropologist Jason De Le\u00f3n based upon De Le\u00f3n\u2019s Undocumented Migration Project. We studied the problem of Frobenius closure in affine semigroup rings, which, due to some theorems of Bruns-Li-R\u00f6mer, are controlled by the (weak) normalization map. We construct an adjustment to an affine semigroup A which we called the p-weak normalization of A, which depends on a fixed prime number p, and from that we are able to bound Frobenius closure in the corresponding affine semigroup ring over a field of that characteristic.
