In 2014, using macro photography to explore his backyard garden, he unknowingly began walking a naturalist\u2019s path and documenting native pollinators and invertebrates. His large format prints of local invertebrates are currently on exhibit outside of the Belle Isle Nature Center, with other works on exhibit inside the Center. With them, he seeks to inspire viewers to take a closer look at the tiny world around us.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nArtist Statement\r\n\r\nTo me, the little things matter.\r\n\r\nThrough my work as a photographer, I share the unseen and overlooked world of nature that surrounds us. My focus is exploring the world of invertebrates and showcasing these creatures in their natural habitat.\r\n\r\nMy creative process has evolved into a moving mediation, as I Slow down to observe, document and connect with my subjects as we interact in the environment. We demonstrate the importance of this externality in the market for pharmaceutical cancer treatments, where drug combination therapies have proven highly effective. Using data on clinical trial investments, we document several facts consistent with inefficiently low private innovation: firms are less likely than publicly funded researchers to trial combinations, firms are less likely to trial combinations including other firms\u2019 drugs than those including their own drugs, and firms often wait to trial combinations including other firms\u2019 drugs until those drugs experience generic entry. Using microdata on drug prices and utilization, we quantify the externalities that arise from new combinations and find that the market expansion externality often dominates the standard negative business stealing externality, suggesting too little innovation in combination therapies. As a result, firms may have incentives to free ride off others\u2019 innovation, which we analyze with a dynamic structural model of innovation decisions. We use the model to design cost-effective policies that advance combination innovation.
