Over a century, scholarly printers competed to produce carefully edited editions. As they produced more and more, they developed methods, such as page-layout and indices, to make their books easy to read, and they created dictionaries and reference books so a reader could get more from their books.\r\n\r\nThe Estienne family of printers are among the most renowned and long-lasting printing houses of the era. Family links and investment in scholarly training helped them to sustain a business in the print trade for six generations in France and Switzerland.\r\n\r\nThe Special Collections Research Center holds nearly 80 imprints dating from the first years of the sixteenth century into the reign of Louis XIV. In 2014, using macro photography to explore his backyard garden, he unknowingly began walking a naturalist\u2019s path and documenting native pollinators and invertebrates. His large format prints of local invertebrates are currently on exhibit outside of the Belle Isle Nature Center, with other works on exhibit inside the Center. With them, he seeks to inspire viewers to take a closer look at the tiny world around us.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nArtist Statement\r\n\r\nTo me, the little things matter.\r\n\r\nThrough my work as a photographer, I share the unseen and overlooked world of nature that surrounds us. My focus is exploring the world of invertebrates and showcasing these creatures in their natural habitat.\r\n\r\nMy creative process has evolved into a moving mediation, as I Slow down to observe, document and connect with my subjects as we interact in the environment. Ultimately, I seek to capture the unique beauty of creatures not usually perceived as beautiful and aim to create images that evoke emotion and curiosity. In so doing I strive to raise awareness of the importance of these creatures in our world and dispel any fears the viewer may have.\r\n\r\nInstagram: https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/josephferraro\/\r\n\r\nWeb: https:\/\/www.joseph-ferraro.com", "occurrence_notes":null, "guid":"141375-21888721@events.umich.edu", "permalink":"http:\/\/events.umich.edu\/event\/141375", "building_id":"0", "building_name":"Matthaei Botanical Gardens", "campus_maps_id":"554", "room":"", "location_name":"Matthaei Botanical Gardens", "has_livestream":0, "cost":"", "tags":["Art","Free","garden","matthaei","matthaei botanical gardens","Sustainability","Visual Arts"], "website":"https:\/\/mbgna.umich.edu\/event\/art-exhibit-closer-look-tiny-world-around-us", "sponsors":[ { "group_name":"Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum", "group_id":"1072", "website":"" } ], "image_url":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "styled_images":{ "event_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_large_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large_2x\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_large_lightbox":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large_lightbox\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "group_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "group_thumb_square":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/group_thumb_square\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "group_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_large\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "group_large_lightbox":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/group_large_lightbox\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_large_crop":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_large_crop\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_list":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_list\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_list_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_list_2x\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_grid":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_grid\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_grid_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_grid_2x\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_feature_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_feature_large\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png", "event_feature_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_feature_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2025\/11\/event_141375_original-1.png" }, "occurrence_count":19, "first_occurrence":21888718 } }
