"description":"Most stars in our galaxy form in systems, whose architecture and composition are fossil records of\ntheir formation and evolution. Particularly for brown dwarfs and exoplanets, belonging to a system is\na key advantage for their characterization and the calibration of evolutionary and atmospheric\nmodels. In this talk, I will provide a status update on the multiplicity statistics within the 20pc\ncensus, and lay out multiple ongoing efforts to characterize benchmark systems and confirm\ncandidate ones with Gaia-Hipparcos accelerations, double-PSF fitting, and spectral binary fitting\nprior to the upcoming Gaia DR4. These benchmark systems are also our best atmospheric\nlaboratories to disentangle confounding parameters and their effect on spectroscopy. Together, these\nstudies bridge separate populations that look alike in their fundamental and atmospheric properties\nbut differ in origin, leveraging that contrast to trace their stellar or planetary formation histories.",

"description":"Biscuits, cornbread, hot rolls, mile-high cakes, steaming cobblers \u2014 southern baking holds a towering place in the realm of American cookery. Founded on Native American, English, and African traditions, and raised in a hot, humid climate, southern baking developed in distinctive ways. We'll talk about how southerners over four centuries have shaped their baking around corn and flour and made it their own. \n\nWe are delighted to welcome the first speaker to give a Longone Lecture \u2014 a biennial lecture series exploring the history of food and drink in the United States. Rebecca Sharpless, Professor of History at Texas Christian University, writes on the intersections of food, women, and work in the American South. \n\nJoin us in person (Hatcher Gallery) or via Zoom (https:\/\/umich.zoom.us\/j\/93172475387). Light refreshments will be served, and copies of Professor Sharpless' recent books, \"Grain and Fire: A History of Baking in the American South\" and \"People of the Wheat: Culture and Cultivation in North Texas\" will be available for purchase.",

"description":"Dating back to Guderley\u2019s pioneering work in 1942, the Guderley problem is a classical problem in compressible fluid dynamics describing the implosion and subsequent reflection of a strong spherical shock wave. An initially converging shock propagates toward the origin, strengthens as it collapses, and eventually develops a singularity. After the collapse, an outgoing shock emerges and propagates outward.\n\nIn this talk, I will present our rigorous construction of self-similar converging and diverging shock solutions for the adiabatic exponent $\\gamma\\in(1,3]$. These solutions are analytic away from the shock interfaces and the blow-up point. The proof relies on continuity arguments, nonlinear invariances, and barrier functions.",

I will discuss how this research journey led to systematic resolution of generalizable principles that explain how ecosystems function. The fundamental lesson is that dedication to long-term theory-informed field research can lead to a coherent predictive understanding of how ecosystems function.",

"description":"Electrochemical cells rely on redox reactions at electrode\u2013electrolyte interfaces, where electrode composition strongly influences reaction pathways and stability. Copper is widely used as a current collector, yet its interfacial redox dynamics in ionic liquid electrolytes remain poorly understood on ultrafast timescales. Traditional electrochemical techniques provide macroscopic insight but lack the temporal resolution to capture these dynamics. Here, we combine two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) imaging with theory to bridge molecular-scale dynamics and macroscopic electrochemical measurements.Using time-dependent 2D IR imaging, we probe ultrafast vibrational dynamics and chemical equilibria in an ionic liquid containing dicyanamide (DCA\u207b). Although copper(I) is typically unstable in solution, DCA\u207b stabilizes this oxidation state, enabling the formation of both copper(I) and copper(II) DCA complexes under applied potential. Cross-peak analysis reveals dynamic equilibrium and migration of these species near the oxidizing electrode, permitting direct observation of reaction pathways during device operation. These results provide molecular-level insight into copper redox chemistry in ionic liquid electrolytes and demonstrate the capability of 2D IR imaging for studying operating electrochemical systems. Finally, we present a promising approach based on a spectral generalized master equation framework that dramatically reduces image acquisition time.",
