A national hero in Korea and the University of Michigan\u2019s most famous Korean alumnus, Ilhan New\u2019s remarkable biography is well known. Born in Pyongyang, New came to the United States at a young age and received primary and secondary education in the Midwest. In Hastings, Nebraska, New attended the Korean youth military school established by Park Yong-man in 1909. From Hastings, New moved to Detroit and then to nearby Ann Arbor to pursue a degree in business and commerce at the University of Michigan. While studying at Michigan New met his future spouse and trailblazing partner Mary Woo. In 1922, New and a friend from the University of Michigan named Wally Smith launched the brand La Choy and turned a seemingly impossible chance encounter into one of the most spectacular examples of the American Dream at Smith\u2019s grocery in Detroit. New returned to his homeland in 1926 at the age of 31 and established a successful pharmaceutical company named Yuhan yanghaeng. In the final years of the Pacific War, New once again demonstrated his ability to shape new forms of Asian, American, and Asian American agency as a consultant for the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS). After liberation in 1945, New made significant contributions to the rebuilding of South Korea through education, public health, and philanthropy.\n\nFar from taking New as an extraordinary individual who led an exceptional life, the conference will approach New\u2019s biography as a point of entry that opens onto several important avenues for thinking about Korean, American, and Asian American histories of the modern era, as well as a method for interrogating these histories\u2019 complex imbrications with one another. Particular attention will be paid to the lesser known forces that shaped New\u2019s trajectory and the transformative impact of New\u2019s life on these and other historical forces. Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant, and later studio manager, in 2024. Over those six years, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year, open studio for the public, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026, they decided to expand community programming, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community, when they share space and create work together. \n\nThe work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works, by their studiomates Diskette Press, the publisher Maamoul Press, and by the community that uses the space.", "occurrence_notes":"All welcome! We have seen how the arts and humanities transform perception, provide expertise, and help people grapple with the biggest questions about what it means to be human and to live in an increasingly interconnected, yet often divided world. And, in both the arts and humanities, we know UM faculty are contributing to their disciplines in deeply meaningful ways. \n\nYet, for all we know about these positive effects, arts and humanities research is often imagined to be at odds with the metric-driven language of \u201cimpact\u201d--a term often seen as imposed from fields outside the arts and humanities. At the same time, \u201cimpact\u201d has become the dominant framework for measuring the value of academic research. As a result, arts and humanities faculty are often called upon to describe our \u201cimpact\u201d in ways that are legible to University leadership and funding imperatives, even as we feel uneasy about how to answer such calls in ways that are authentic to our work. How do we avoid finding ourselves outside terms that are increasingly important in the fight for the continued growth and resilience of higher education in the U.S?\n\n\u201cWhat\u2019s Our Impact?: Understanding how the Arts & Humanities Matter\u201d is a series of events slated for October 29 & 30 on UM\u2019s Ann Arbor campus. A joint initiative of the UM Arts Initiative, Office of Vice President of Research (OVPR), and the Institute for Humanities, the gathering will serve arts and humanities faculty seeking more ways to discuss their work in terms that are legible within the ascendant impact paradigm, while also ensuring that those terms are authentic to our disciplines, methods, and creative practice. Through a public conversation, facilitated workshop, keynote from UM leadership, and a panel with funders, the 1.5 day long event will bring together experts\u2013those engaging \u201cimpact\u201d in their research, those in leadership, and those community partners with whom we work\u2013and put them in conversation with arts and humanities leadership and researchers at the University of Michigan.
