We develop a test for equality of regression functions across two populations that allows unequal covariate distributions and uses flexible modern learners for regression estimation. We target the regression contrast through pseudo-residuals, which we construct by multiplying residuals from the pooled outcome regression by the difference between the population indicator and its propensity. Under overlap, the conditional mean of the proposed pseudo-residuals identifies the regression contrast. Furthermore, the pseudo-residuals satisfy Neyman orthogonality, which removes the first-order population bias from nuisance estimation and allows us to test the regression contrast under weaker nuisance estimation rate requirements. To construct our test statistic, we embed the conditional moment of the pseudo-residuals in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), leading to a simple closed form expression and calibrate its empirical norm using a Gaussian multiplier bootstrap. We establish a finite-sample calibration bound that separates oracle Gaussian approximation, nuisance estimation, and covariance estimation errors. Our main result gives conditions under which we can use the same observations for both nuisance fitting and testing, yielding valid and powerful inference without sample splitting. In a fixed Gaussian regression model, we establish matching lower and upper bounds for the minimax separation order (n^{-1/2}) in the RKHS discrepancy and show that the proposed test attains this order. We conduct extensive numerical studies to examine size and power across learners and demonstrate power gains over a single sample split and other competitors and illustrate the test on an exploratory application to negotiation dialogues for regression comparison with text covariates.",

September 29 - November 15, 2026.

Artist Bio

“Bozho, Justin Johnson nde zhnëkas, Eau Claire ndë wtthbya. Mshiké ndodem minė Bodéwadmi ndaw.” (“Hello, my name is Justin Johnson, I come from Eau Claire. My clan is turtle and I am Potawatomi”).

My name is Justin Johnson, Native name Thitthishkewé. I’m a visual artist whose work is deeply shaped by my Potawatomi heritage. Raised in Coloma, Michigan, my artistic path began in childhood and continued through grade school and high school, eventually leading to me studying at Kendall College of Art & Design for four years. My art is a reflection of both personal expression and cultural tradition, honoring the interconnectedness of people, animals, land, and spirit. Guided by intuition, ancestral knowledge, and the natural world. I’m always seeking new ways to tell stories through my work. My drawings are inspiration from tribal stories, culture, and values that have been passed down through generations. I have collaborated with the Pokagon Band on numerous projects, including traditional storybooks and illustrations. Aswell as permanent collections at the Pokagon Band Administration Building and the Pokagon Health Services building, and artwork featured in the Four Winds Casino gift shop. Some other projects and exhibtions that I’ve participated in would be the Native American exhibition at the Krasl Art Center and a featured as the cover artist with a six-page article in PAN-O-PLY magazine. My murals can be found at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, the Edwardsburg (Cass County District) Library, and the Buchanan District Library. Currently, I’m collaborating with Northwestern University on a new mural for their football stadium. Through diverse body of work, my work continues to share the stories, values, and traditions of his heritage with a wide audience.

Artist Statement

My work is deeply rooted in my culture, which shapes both my perspective and my creative process. We see ourselves as part of the Earth, not separate from it—every act, every gesture, is an exchange. When we take, we give. This relationship is woven into the art I make, which follows the tradition known as Woodlands Style, or Legendary Style. It’s not the invention of any one person. It has been handed down, shaped by countless hands and stories over generations. This style is often described as “x-ray” painting. With vivid colors and layered lines, I try to reveal the inner spirit of animals, plants, and people—sometimes physical, sometimes spiritual. There’s a rhythm to it that still echoes the Great Lakes region: bold, luminous, and full of life. Each piece is a story that’s been told and retold, woven across time, just like the spirits that guide us. As an artist, I try to reflect these values in everything I do. Even when we drift from the old ways, our spirit keeps us connected. My work is a reminder—a visual invitation to reconnect, to live more intentionally, and to honor the balance and respect that our traditions teach.
Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one session workshop that engages graduate students in meaningful dialogue about various forms of sexual misconduct they may encounter in both professional and social spaces, and provides resources for intervention or support in such circumstances. The primary goal of the workshop is to address complexities experienced by graduate students as they engage in bystander intervention, so that participants gain an increase in awareness of barriers to action and familiarity with strategic planning to overcome them. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings. The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. Due to the participatory nature of the workshop, if you are to arrive more than 20 minutes late, we will ask you to re-register for another workshop session. If you have any questions about or concerns with taking this workshop, or are in need of an exemption, please contact jhippe@umich.edu or fill out this form. We know some students come to campus having already experienced harm. If you have circumstances that make completing this course challenging, please reach out to the GROWE team. SAPAC GROWE provides exemptions to the ERC workshop (where requirements are set in place) on a case by case basis. The Program Manager will communicate with students requesting exemptions via email and/or meet with students via zoom meetings to discuss their need for exemptions and provide any relevant and necessary resources.
The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs, temples, and homes; stylized animals flicker into view, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. Anticipating recent interests in color and form, the visual trends of antiquity emerge as far more varied than has long been told.

*Ancient Abstractions is on view from November 5, 2026, through February 28, 2027, during regular museum hours (Tuesday–Friday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM, and Saturday–Sunday, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM; closed Mondays and university holidays.*",
