From the Syrian civil war to conflicts across Africa and the movement of people from the Indian subcontinent, this moment in 2015-16 came to be framed as the \u2018migrant crisis\u2019. It also became a media crisis, marked by an explosion of alarmist reporting about people on the move. Rather than being treated as a humanitarian emergency requiring search and rescue missions, the movement of vulnerable people across the Mediterranean was increasingly depicted as an attack by \u201cinvaders\u201d from \u201cover there\u201d. The media too often relied on visual tropes of small boats, barbed wire, and faceless masses, stripping people of their dignity and humanity.\n\nDrawing on a decade of his reporting across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Ismail Einashe will in this lecture examine how the media constructed the figure of the \u201cmigrant\u201d in the global public imagination, reducing complex human movements to extreme binaries: the \u201cvulnerable body\u201d or the \u201cdangerous outsider.\u201d He will consider how, a decade on, this narrative has fueled increasing securitisation across the Mediterranean, even as fewer migrants arrive.\n\nEinashe will explore why this story has become one of the biggest \u2014 and most divisive \u2014 stories in recent history. He will also analyse whether the media simply reported Europe's migration story or helped shape it into a permanent \u2018crisis\u2019 that now threatens European democracy.\n\nIsmail Einashe is an award-winning British-Somali journalist and author whose work on migration and refugee issues has appeared in numerous publications \u2013 including *Foreign Policy*, *The Guardian*, *BBC News*, *The Nation*, *The Sunday Times*, *The New York Times*, *NPR* and *ArtReview*. He is the author of *Strangers* (2023), a book by Tate Publishing that explores migration through the lens of art, and he co-edited *Lost in Media: Migrant Perspectives and the Public Sphere* (2019), a collection of critical essays examining how migrants are represented in European media. He was a 2025\u201326 Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan, where he examined migration reporting through the lens of trauma and art. Einashe is also part of a team of journalists working on Lost in Europe, a cross-border journalism collaborative that investigates the disappearance of child migrants. In this seminar, I present fundamental science research in magnetized astrophysical plasmas that is accomplished through the concerted application of simulation codes and laboratory plasma astrophysics experiments. I discuss studies in fluctuation dynamo, a ubiquitous astrophysical process thought to be responsible for the present-day magnetization of numerous celestial objects; charged particle diffusive transport and acceleration, in the context of extragalactic and ultra-high energy cosmic rays; and the transport of heat in galaxy clusters. The experiments leverage world-class laser facilities like the Omega Laser Facility at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt. We detail these experiments, as well as the FLASH simulation campaigns that we executed for their design and interpretation, providing us with new way to validate or falsify our theoretical understanding. The work reflects the efforts of the TDYNO (Turbulent Dynamo) collaboration.\n\nWe acknowledge support by the U.S. DOE NNSA; the U.S. DOE Office of Science; and the U. S. National Science Foundation. We also acknowledge support from UK Research and Innovation.\n\nAbout the Speaker: \nPetros Tzeferacos is the Director of Flash Center for Computational Science, a Professor of Physics and Astronomy, and a Senior Scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics of the University of Rochester. He works on plasma physics and astrophysics, combining MHD theory, numerical modeling, and laser-driven laboratory experiments, to study fundamental astrophysical plasma processes with a focus on magnetized turbulence, dynamo, and charged particle acceleration. He is also working on several fundamental topics in inertial fusion energy and high energy density physics. He holds a visiting scientist position with the University of Oxford and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and is a guest scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He received the APS John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research in 2019, an Early Career Award from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science in 2021, and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2025.\n\nThe seminar will be conducted in person, with livestream on Zoom.
