He got his B. S. from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, and his Ph. D. in Genetics from Pennsylvania State University. He was a Fogarty postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases before moving to the University of Michigan.\n\nAbstract\n\nAdaptive evolution proceeds through beneficial nucleotide substitutions in the genome, yet the number of such substitutions (N) required to reach a local or global fitness peak where no single mutation further increases fitness remains unknown. Here we estimate N by simulating adaptive walks on two large, complete, multi-environment adaptive landscapes inferred from massive empirical data using machine learning, with validation from smaller experimentally mapped landscapes. We find that N rises linearly with the number of variable sites (L) in the landscape, regardless of prior adaptation in another environment. Extrapolation suggests a minimal N of 10^5 for typical prokaryotes and 10^7 for mammals. By contrast, in highly rugged shuffled landscapes, N is markedly reduced, while fitness gains also shrink. The relatively smooth empirical landscapes therefore enable greater fitness gains while lengthening adaptive walks, rendering even local fitness peaks effectively unreachable before environments change. These results explain the persistence of fitness gains in long-term evolution experiments and the widespread occurrence of beneficial mutations across species. The dance composition is driven by decisions that transform the work into an ever-evolving conversation between movement, space, and sound. Tawil is Palestinian and Syrian; engaged in the world as such. Her choreographies and sound projects have been presented throughout the states, Europe, and the Arab world. Highlight engagements: \u201cMy Name is Palestine\u201d exhibit at Southern Exposure (SF), performance commissions from Abrons Arts Center (NYC) and Sibelius Museum (Turku), and residencies with Sharjah Art Foundation (UAE), Wysing Arts\/British Council (UK) and PlayHouse Labs (Detroit). Tawil was nominated for a 2019 \u201cBessies\u201d Award in Music (NYC) and received the Ruth Arts Artist Choice Award 2026. She has stewarded TAC Temescal Art Center in Oakland since 1997, and is the founding director of Arab.AMP - a platform for worldbuilding artists from the Arab\/SWANA diaspora and our allied communities.\n\nZARI LIONUDAKIS, Dance Collaborator and Performer\nZari Lionudakis is an artist and educator who challenges perceptions of either\/or. A lone wolf in lineage, heritage and praxis, Zari's work in liminal space bleeds into her performance, technique classes, scholarship and healing modalities. The late historian Hayden White called Zari a \"radical visionary,\" as every mode of Zari's work challenges existing notions of what \"is.\" Whether ballet or vernacular, slang or scholarship, Zari uses languages that work towards liberation. She has performed extensively with DANCE ELIXIR since its founding in 2003.\n\nJOHN MACDOUGALL PARKER, Music Collaborator and Performer\nJohn MacDougall Parker creates improvisational future-folk compositions where sound is amalgamated and congealed into a resolution of crossed signals. He has devised instruments focused on the interface between humans and machines, which are arranged to make music in the moment. Parker, of American and Korean origin, floats between NYC and S\u00e3o Paulo.\n\nSCOTT TALLENGER, Costumes\nScott Tallenger is a Left-Handed\/Right Brained, photographer, skateboarder and fashion designer. Based in Detroit and working nationally, Scott specializes in one-of-a-kind event garments and accessories.
