In this talk I present a series of primed lexical decision experiments about how listeners recognize English words containing the sociostylistic variable ING (e.g., workin\u2019 ~ working). First, we cross the two variants in an affix priming design (e.g., jumpin\u2019\/jumping > thinkin\u2019\/thinking). We find that both -ing and -in\u2019 variants robustly facilitate themselves and each other: jumpin\u2019 does indeed facilitate both thinkin\u2019 and thinking, as does jumping. The strongest facilitation arises when both prime and target contain -in\u2019, but we do not detect differences in facilitation strength between the other three conditions, contra the predictions of accounts rooted in prime\/target similarity or prime canonicality. The extra boost in the -in\u2019 > -in\u2019 condition is lost when an unrelated trial intervenes between prime and target, whereas general affix facilitation remains robust. We then move away from the affix priming design to show that when the prime is a monomorphemic noun containing ING (e.g., awning) and the target is a progressive verb, then e.g. awnin\u2019 facilitates thinkin\u2019 but awning does not facilitate thinking. This asymmetry is not simply a property of the surface phonological strings: we do not find facilitation from e.g. dolphin to thinkin\u2019. Finally, to disambiguate between phonological derivation and stylistic incongruency as possible sources of the -in\u2019 asymmetries, we repeat the first experiment with Southern-accented stimuli intended to improve the expectedness of the -in\u2019 variant in the experimental context. Under these conditions, we no longer find significant evidence for the -in\u2019 boost, suggesting that listeners\u2019 sociostylistic expectations modulate the priming effects. Various monoids inside this mapping class group have been shown to correspond to geometric properties of the corresponding contact structures, such as Stein Fillability, Strong Fillability, Weak Fillability, Tightness etc. In the case of open books with planar (genus zero) pages, Fillability of the underlying contact manifold was shown by Wendl to correspond to the existence of positive factorizations of the mapping class -- this is not true in higher genus. In recent work, extending results of Lisi -- Van Horn-Morris -- Wendl, we showed that using Spinal open books, fillability of a contact 3-manifold can be interpreted as the existence of positive 'admissible' factorizations of a mapping class in the framed mapping class group of a planar surface. Using this, we have recovered and improved existing fillability results on some torus bundles and surgeries on torus knots, as well as classified the fillings of these manifolds. These are joint works with Hyunki Min and Luya Wang.
