Artist Tomoyuki Ueno creates individual works and installations where nature appears to be in an endless conversation with form, one echoing the other, a repetition. They are a combination of certainty and ephemerality, as if hinged between living and loss. The specificity of Ueno’s sculptural works reads like poetry. Ueno’s installation offers visitors time away, for contemplation, to draw inward, to come inside, to ask the question, “How are art and the everyday intertwined?” Honoring the Buddhist philosophy of impermanence, one becomes a continuation of the other. The artist intends the space to offer a restorative and meditative experience.

This exhibition includes artworks created from natural materials foraged by the artist while in artist residency in Ann Arbor.

*The title refers to the opening line of Hōjōki, written by 13th-century Japanese Buddhist monk Kamo no Chōmei: "The flow of the river is ceaseless, and the water is never the same…"*",

Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant, and later studio manager, in 2024. Over those six years, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year, open studio for the public, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026, they decided to expand community programming, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.

This exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. It also serves to show what is possible as a community, when they share space and create work together.

The work featured is a collection of things printed by Small Works, by their studiomates Diskette Press, the publisher Maamoul Press, and by the community that uses the space.",

September 29 - November 15, 2026.

Artist Bio

“Bozho, Justin Johnson nde zhnëkas, Eau Claire ndë wtthbya. Mshiké ndodem minė Bodéwadmi ndaw.” (“Hello, my name is Justin Johnson, I come from Eau Claire. My clan is turtle and I am Potawatomi”).

My name is Justin Johnson, Native name Thitthishkewé. I’m a visual artist whose work is deeply shaped by my Potawatomi heritage. Raised in Coloma, Michigan, my artistic path began in childhood and continued through grade school and high school, eventually leading to me studying at Kendall College of Art & Design for four years. My art is a reflection of both personal expression and cultural tradition, honoring the interconnectedness of people, animals, land, and spirit. Guided by intuition, ancestral knowledge, and the natural world. I’m always seeking new ways to tell stories through my work. My drawings are inspiration from tribal stories, culture, and values that have been passed down through generations. I have collaborated with the Pokagon Band on numerous projects, including traditional storybooks and illustrations. Aswell as permanent collections at the Pokagon Band Administration Building and the Pokagon Health Services building, and artwork featured in the Four Winds Casino gift shop. Some other projects and exhibtions that I’ve participated in would be the Native American exhibition at the Krasl Art Center and a featured as the cover artist with a six-page article in PAN-O-PLY magazine. My murals can be found at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, the Edwardsburg (Cass County District) Library, and the Buchanan District Library. Currently, I’m collaborating with Northwestern University on a new mural for their football stadium. Through diverse body of work, my work continues to share the stories, values, and traditions of his heritage with a wide audience.

Artist Statement

My work is deeply rooted in my culture, which shapes both my perspective and my creative process. We see ourselves as part of the Earth, not separate from it—every act, every gesture, is an exchange. When we take, we give. This relationship is woven into the art I make, which follows the tradition known as Woodlands Style, or Legendary Style. It’s not the invention of any one person. It has been handed down, shaped by countless hands and stories over generations. This style is often described as “x-ray” painting. With vivid colors and layered lines, I try to reveal the inner spirit of animals, plants, and people—sometimes physical, sometimes spiritual. There’s a rhythm to it that still echoes the Great Lakes region: bold, luminous, and full of life. Each piece is a story that’s been told and retold, woven across time, just like the spirits that guide us. As an artist, I try to reflect these values in everything I do. Even when we drift from the old ways, our spirit keeps us connected. My work is a reminder—a visual invitation to reconnect, to live more intentionally, and to honor the balance and respect that our traditions teach.
The lifelike naturalistic bodies of Greek and Roman sculpture have been a source of wonder since the Renaissance. Indeed, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time “when sculpture rose to its greatest height.” But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs, temples, and homes; stylized animals flicker into view, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media. Anticipating recent interests in color and form, the visual trends of antiquity emerge as far more varied than has long been told.

*Ancient Abstractions is on view from November 5, 2026, through February 28, 2027, during regular museum hours (Tuesday–Friday, 10:00 AM–4:00 PM, and Saturday–Sunday, 11:00 AM–4:00 PM; closed Mondays and university holidays.*
BME Special Guest Lecturer:
Stephane Avril

Multiscale Digital Twins IN CARDIOVASCULAR MEDICINE
Abstract:
Aortic aneurysms and dissections require personalized therapeutic strategies to reduce the risk of catastrophic complications. This lecture introduces a multiscale digital-twin framework combining fast surrogate biomechanical models, machine-learning–based inverse identification, and tissue mechanobiology. At the clinical scale, latent-space representations enable rapid patient-specific simulation to predict complications such as endoleaks. At the material scale, inverse methods and neural-network constitutive models reveal regional tissue properties and rupture indicators. At the biological scale, growth-and-remodeling models describe how proteolytic injury, hemodynamics, and cellular processes drive disease progression. By integrating these components, digital twins become powerful tools to support diagnosis, intervention planning, and future therapies for delaying vascular aging.
Bio:
Stéphane Avril is Professor of Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering at Mines Saint-Étienne, France, and Director of the SAINBIOSE laboratory (INSERM U1059). He received his PhD in Mechanical and Civil Engineering from Mines Saint-Étienne in 2002. His research focuses on biomechanics and mechanobiology of soft tissues, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular applications. His work combines medical imaging, experimental characterization, computational modeling, and patient-specific digital twins. He has led major research programs funded by the ERC, ANR, BPI France, and Horizon Europe. He is the recipient of an ERC Advanced Grant (JuvenTwin) and previously held an ERC Consolidator Grant. He has been a Visiting Professor at Yale University and Guest Professor at TU Vienna and TU Graz. He has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and supervised over 50 PhD students and 25 postdoctoral researchers. He is cofounder of PrediSurge and KaomX, translating biomechanical research into innovative medical and research technologies. He was elected to the World Council of Biomechanics in 2026 and has received several international awards for his contributions to biomechanics.

Websites:
https://emse.fr/~avril
https://sainbiose-lab.fr/",
