Join the University of Michigan's Evolution & Human Adaptation Program for the 2026 Evolution in the Public Eye Award celebration. This award recognizes individuals who share evidence-based science and challenge misinformation, helping us all better understand the role of evolution in shaping the mind. The winner will deliver an address on their work, highlighting efforts to improve scholarly and public dialogue.

Lecture summary: Emotions are among the most familiar and ubiquitous parts of the human experience — and among the most puzzling. How do emotions work? Why do they work that way? And why do we have them at all? Drawing on an evolutionary perspective, we’ll examine fear, disgust, shame, romantic love, and other emotions: how they coordinate distinct changes across the body, brain, and mind; how different emotions evolved to solve different problems; and how their structure reflects the problems they evolved to solve. But this perspective also raises a puzzle: if emotions are evolved systems that help us navigate important life challenges, why do they sometimes lead us astray? Grasping the adaptive logic of emotion helps resolve this puzzle and gives us a deeper and more accurate understanding of our emotions. The result is an evolutionarily grounded framework for thinking about emotion that goes beyond dichotomizing emotions as good or bad, rational or irrational, and provides a new way of making sense of our emotional lives.

About the award recipient and speaker: Dr. Laith Al-Shawaf is a research psychologist, writer, and professor at the University of Colorado. His research focuses on emotions, cognition, and personality, with an emphasis on understanding the structure and function of the human mind from an evolutionary perspective. He is the primary editor and curator of The Oxford Handbook of Evolution and the Emotions, a 70-chapter volume published in 2024.

Professor Al-Shawaf is a President’s Teaching Scholar, a lifetime designation across the University of Colorado system, and the recipient of numerous research and teaching awards, including the Rising Star Award from the Association for Psychological Science, the Early Career Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions and the Fellow Award from the Human Behavior and Evolution Society, and multiple teaching and research honors from the University of Colorado. He is the recipient of the 2026 Evolution in the Public Eye Award for excellence in communicating evolutionary science to the public.

In addition to his scholarly work, he writes popular science essays for general audiences and has appeared on a variety of science podcasts and other media platforms. His popular science writing has been translated into multiple languages.
The Golden Age of American Bands captured the imagination of the public in the latter part of the 1800s and through the first decades of the 20th century. Bands became a primary source of entertainment in cities and towns all across the nation and legendary band leaders like Patrick Gilmore and John Philip Sousa were celebrities in their day. Virtuoso soloists like Jules Levy, Arthur Pryor, and Herbert L. Clarke dazzled the thousands who flocked to the concerts by these famous bands.

As part of the formal launch of the Center for American Band History Research at the University of Michigan, the School of Music, Theatre & Dance along with the Clements Library are proud to present a concert of traditional music from this era, played with the authentic instrumentation of these early bands. From marches written for newspapers of the day, to novelties, brass solos, songs, and orchestral transcriptions, this concert is a tribute to the birth of the great American band tradition.

PROGRAM

March, The Billboard - John Klohr
Overture, Light Cavalry - von Suppe
March, The Detroit Free Press - W.P.
As the country heads into the 2026 midterm elections, the University of Michigan welcomes journalist Osita Nwanevu, contributing editor at The New Republic and columnist at The Guardian, for a public conversation with Elizabeth Anderson, the John Dewey Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy.

The evening centers on Nwanevu's new book, The Right of the People: Democracy and the Case for a New American Founding, which argues that America's democratic troubles run deeper than any single election. The real problem, Nwanevu contends, lies in institutions that were never designed to let majorities govern, and in an economy that keeps power far from ordinary people.

Anderson, one of the country's most influential political philosophers, brings her own work on democracy, equality, and the workplace to the exchange. Together they take up the questions this election season keeps surfacing. Who really holds power in America? Why do so many people feel unheard, and what would it take to build a democracy worthy of the name?

The conversation is free and open to students, faculty, and the broader Ann Arbor community, with time for audience questions.

Schedule

*Graduate student workshop with Osita*
Ross School of Business, room sent to registrants.
2:00 to 3:30 pm
Sign up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfp8sfCKgchUYJxep4UtwYVBAGXcdZLOLV-M8ozfZJE1lf7VQ/viewform

*Main Event*
Friday, October 9, 2026
Ross School of Business, Robertson Auditorium

5:30 pm Doors open, light refreshments in the lobby, and pickup of pre-ordered books.
6:00 pm The program begins, including questions and answers at the end.
7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing in the lobby until 8:00 pm.

RSVP -- free, but please sign up to help us plan refreshments: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc3_b6m_2cOK6JzOtUdZQSsU4f1ma7wH6pCxY25x3_Pu5ldDg/viewform

Books: Ross doesn't allow sales on site, so pre-order "The Right of the People" (https://literatibookstore.com/book/9780593449929) and "Hijacked" (https://literatibookstore.com/book/9781009275392) from Literati by Thursday, Oct. 8 and pick up your copy at the event.

Can't make it in person?
Full description here: Rebuilding Democracy | Happening @ Michigan

Schedule

Friday, October 9, 2026 at Ross School of Business, Robertson Auditorium

5:30 pm Doors open, light refreshments and Literati book sales in the lobby.
6:00 pm The program begins, including questions and answers at the end.
7:30 pm Refreshments and book signing / sales in the lobby until 8:00 pm.

",
