Nearly eighty years have passed since the establishment of the Republic of Korea in the South and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the North in 1948. This exhibit features selected library collections that trace the history and major milestones of Korean democracy, with particular attention to the vital role of student movements.

At pivotal moments in modern Korean history, students stood at the forefront of resistance to authoritarian rule and military oppression. Their activism became a powerful force in the pursuit of political freedom and contributed significantly to the advancement of democracy in Korea. Spanning the period from Korea’s first president, Syngman Rhee, to current president Lee Jae-myung, this exhibit invites visitors to reflect on Korea’s long, complex, and ongoing journey toward democratization.

Presented by the library in conjunction with Democracy Week at Michigan and in collaboration with the Nam Center for Korean Studies.

Third Thursdays at the Library is a themed monthly open house where we share materials from our collections. While you’re here, pick up a passport and collect a stamp from each of this month's Third Thursday locations — Asia Library, Clark Library, International Studies, and the Special Collections Research Center — to win a prize!
Seminar summary - Understanding how organisms evolve adaptations to diverse environments is crucial to biological research. Despite their importance, our understanding of the genetic, physiological, and developmental mechanisms that drive these adaptations remains limited. In this talk, I will present significant advancements made by my research group in elucidating these mechanisms in the yellow monkeyflower (Mimulus guttatus). Through this research, my group has uncovered the mechanisms underlying plant adaptations to coastal versus inland habitats in California, including to seasonal drought, oceanic salt spray, and herbivory. We are currently focused on understanding how chromosomal inversion polymorphisms facilitate the adaptive transition from a perennial to an annual life-history strategy in this system. Overall, this research enhances our understanding of the mechanisms underlying local adaptation and the intricate relationship between environmental factors and evolutionary genetic processes.
Why is small-town America overwhelmingly white? While we know much about the history of Jim Crow in the South and increasingly in the urban North and South, we know little about the
racial system that emerged in small towns outside the South. Focusing on towns in Indiana and Napa Valley, California, this talk considers how a culture of expulsion became a distinguishing feature of Jim Crow in small towns. Tensions related to migration, labor, and morality fueled racial discourses and practices as expulsion quietly and legally became part of the routine of daily life in small-town America.

Stephen A. Berrey is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Associate Professor of American Culture and History at the University of Michigan. He is chair of the James W. Loewen Foundation, and Director of the Sundown Towns Project (https://justice.tougaloo.edu), a public engagement initiative begun by Loewen to document places that have intentionally excluded some racial groups. He is the author of The Jim Crow Routine: Everyday Performances of Race, Civil Rights, and Segregation in Mississippi (2015). With the Singing Justice Collective, a collaboration of scholars and performers, he is co-author of Black Song: A Manifesto for Music and Justice (forthcoming 2026).

This event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.
Interfacial function is often attributed to the few atomic layers at a boundary. For mixed-dimensional interfaces, however, how far that influence extends depends strongly on direction. The same boundary can act locally along one crystallographic direction and nonlocally along another, reaching tens to hundreds of nanometers into adjoining materials. While theory has long recognized such nonlocality, directly resolving it at functioning interfaces has remained challenging. I argue that the locality of an interface, the distance over which its influence reaches, is not a fixed material property but a design variable revealed by resolving the interfacial response in momentum, space, and time. My group achieves this using momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy, transient absorption spectroscopy, and time-resolved photoemission microscopy. I will discuss two case studies. In MoOCl2, an anisotropic van der Waals crystal, the interface extends far along one in-plane direction while remaining confined along the orthogonal one, making a single boundary simultaneously local and nonlocal. In cobalt and iron oxides, the balance is set instead by the material: regions of local bonding and defect trapping can dominate in one oxide, while strain and interfacial fields carry influence across buried interfaces in another. Together, these examples show that the role of locality at an interface can be tuned by direction, structure, and composition, providing a route to engineer light–matter interactions for photocatalysis and quantum emitters.",
