From September 2025 through December 2026, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Southeast Michigan-based, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator, MFA ’20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20); and Sometimes Space, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I, MFA ’21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, they’ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:

Phase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA ’23) and Erin McKenna (MFA ’20)
Phase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA ’20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA ’20)
Phase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA ’20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA ’21)
Phase 3

Curated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)
Curated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)

Artist Statements/Bios

Abhishek Narula, Compressions
Compressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.

Abhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram

Nathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved
Equally To Be Loved is an image / object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist’s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.

Nathan Byrne is an artist / educator / curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer’s encounters with objects and environments. Byrne holds an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and a BA in Studio Art and Art History from San Francisco State University. He has been a Lecturer at Stamps School of Art & Design since the Fall of 2022. His work is exhibited widely nationally and he is a recipient of the VSC Fellowship at Vermont Studio Center. He has been awarded numerous artist residencies including Anderson Ranch Arts Center, I-Park, KHN Center for the Arts, Prairie Ronde, Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program, and Rockland Woods.
The Araceae is a diverse early divergent lineage within the monocotyledons. Today the family is present in most terrestrial biomes but in Antarctica, driven mostly by their diverse life-forms and reproductive biology. However, an integrative approach that involves morphological, paleontological, phylogenetic and ecological data to understand the deep roots evolution of Araceae is still lacking. In this dissertation, I address this gap by creating a reproductive morphological framework based on fruit and seeds to integrate the aroid reproductive fossil record in a time calibrated phylogeny. I performed a species level survey of aroid fruit and seed anatomy using X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) and scanned over 260 species representing nearly all extant genera of extant diversity. Using these scans, I created a morphological data set that was integrated with DNA sequence data to analyze the evolutionary relationships of six fossil species. With this, I re-evaluated systematics of exceptionally preserved fruits and seeds from the Cretaceous to the Paleogene.

In chapter 2 I evaluated the systematics of a fossil infructescence from the Late Cretaceous of South Dakota and used phylogenetic comparative methods to understand its relationship with modern aroids and understand the time and mode of the evolution of different life-forms across the Araceae tree of life.

Chapter 3 was focused on the structural reinterpretation of fossil fruits from the Paleogene of Northern Africa, and its implications on how extinction can prune former morphologies that are unreachable to see if we rely on extant data.

In the Chapter 4, I focused on advancing the understanding between reproductive fruit and seed aroid biology, their fossil record, and the diversity of life-forms in different sub families. The results of this integrative approach led me to the recognition of the reproductive fossil record of the family within a time-calibrated phylogeny. Additionally, the production of this new comparative morphological dataset, let us recognize the fruits are not strongly determined by the life-forms.

Overall, this dissertation contributes new data and insights into the tempo and mode of aroid evolution, with broader relevance to key questions on paleobiology, evolutionary biology, and Earth Sciences.
Zoom: In the Meeting Invite
In-Person: West Hall 411

Abstract:
Recent progress in the control of complex quantum systems has made it possible to revisit
long-standing questions, realize thought experiments once deemed inaccessible, and explore
new terrain. Our contribution to this progress has been the development of an experimental
platform that creates ultracold quantum fluids in spatiotemporally programmable optical
potentials, engineered with advanced electro-optic devices.
In this talk, I will share our explorations into the physics of fermions confined in ‘boxes of
light’, a deceptively simple stage that gives rise to remarkably rich behavior [1]. Highlights
include few-body recombination in multicomponent fermions [2,3], the first observation of
the quantum Joule–Thomson effect for fermions [4], strong-drive spectroscopy of Fermi-
polaron quasiparticles [5], the first direct observation of the Lindhard response [6], the
observation of the emergence and breakdown of Fermi’s Golden Rule in a strongly
interacting system [7], and the unveiling of a new correspondence between short-time and
long-time behavior in quantum dynamics [8]. Together, these studies span a wide range of
topics—thermodynamics, few-body physics, quantum impurity problems, and
hydrodynamics—showcasing both long-predicted effects finally brought into view and
surprising new phenomena.
[1] N. He received his Ph.D. in 2011 from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (France), where he worked with Christophe Salomon and Frédéric Chevy on the thermodynamics of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases. Afterwards, he worked on trapped-ion quantum information in the group of Roee Ozeri at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel). From 2013 to 2018, he was a Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge (UK), working with Zoran Hadzibabic on homogeneous Bose gases in optical box traps. He joined the Yale faculty in 2017.

His group has built an apparatus that produces strongly interacting Fermi gases in programmable potentials. This apparatus has made it possible to experimentally address quantum many-body problems where theory offers few, if any, reliable answers. The group's recent work includes the observation of the as-yet unexplained recombination dynamics of three-component fermions, the emergence of sound in a Fermi fluid with tunable interactions, the strongly driven Fermi polaron, the first observation of the quantum Joule-Thomson effect for fermions, and the emergence and breakdown of Fermi's Golden Rule in a many-body system. His awards and honors include a Packard Fellowship (2017), a Sloan Research Fellowship (2019), an NSF CAREER Award (2020), the New Horizons Lectureship in Physics at the Solvay Institutes (2023), Outstanding Referee of the APS (2023), and a Scialog Fellowship of the RCSA (2025).

A reverie is a state between waking and dreaming, a moment when the mind drifts beyond the immediate. It is a space where memory, imagination, desire, and reality can overlap, distort, and take on new forms. In these moments, the familiar can become strange, and the ordinary can become something unexpected.

Reverie brings together student works that explore the space between what is known and what is felt. Across painting, oil pastel, ceramic, digital art, animation, and mixed media, the artists move through imagined landscapes, intimate encounters, memories, figures, and fragments of the everyday. These works blur the boundaries between observation and imagination, allowing emotion and perception to reshape what we recognize.

Rather than depicting dreams literally, Reverie considers dreaming as a way of seeing. The works reflect moments of escape, introspection, fantasy, and transformation, where the subconscious can surface and reality becomes open to interpretation.

Reverie was conceived and curated by members of the Student-led Exhibition Committee (SEC), and features work by eight SEC members at the Stamps School of Art & Design. The exhibition includes ten works across oil on canvas, oil pastel, ceramic, digital art, digital animation, and mixed media.",

During our October Community Conversation, you will engage with fellow SEAS & PitE community members and discover ways you can protect your own peace of mind in the lead up and outcome of the upcoming 2026 midterm election. We will also make time for an optional Nature Walk to follow!",
