This paper examines the economic origins and consequences of religious conflicts during the late Qing China (1860–1911), when Christian missionaries entered a Confucian society. While the literature has attributed Chinese anti-missionary conflicts to the clash of cultures, we find that the religious violence was attenuated by the level of economic complementarities, through access to Treaty Ports and public goods provided by the missionaries. We further document negative economic spillovers of the anti-missionary conflicts, as evidenced by the reduced foreign and domestic investments in modern industries. A key transmission mechanism was Western newspaper coverage, which reinforced collective memory and deterred future investment. We also find long-lasting impacts on modern FDI flows and autarkic attitudes among local Chinese.
Industrial policies combine multiple instruments, yet existing research typically studies individual components or treats the bundle as a monolithic intervention. I examine complementarity in policy components of an agro-processing industrial policy, Operation Flood, the world’s largest dairy-development program implemented across Indian districts from 1970 to 1996. Digitizing the implementing agency’s annual reports, I construct a district-by-year map of farmer cooperatives and dairy-processing plants. The components’ staggered rollout generated some districts with one component and some with the bundle. Using matched stacked difference-in-differences, I find that village milk prices in bundle districts increase by 33% during the flush season. Neither arm alone shows any significant effects, and I reject additivity for prices at the 10% level. A stylized model explains this complementarity. Cooperatives alone can saturate local markets, while plants alone cannot transmit the value of an additional outlet upstream. The bundle routes surplus milk to processing and passes value back to farmers. Turning to structural change, the industrial employment share increases by 1.7 percentage points in bundle districts, with no significant standalone effects. This increase comes mainly from non-food manufacturing, with suggestive evidence of input-output linkages. The results show that industrial policy design must account for how market failures interact and how gains are shared along the supply chain
Activity-Based Assays for Monitoring Treatment and Prevention of Infectious Diseases
Abstract:
For many infectious and chronic diseases, effective medications already exist, and prevention or treatment succeeds or fails on whether those drugs are dosed and taken correctly. Concentrations that are too low lead to new infection or treatment failure, and concentrations that are too high cause adverse reactions. Current methods for measuring drug concentrations are expensive, labor-intensive, and slow, which puts them out of reach for most people who would benefit from them. Rapid and inexpensive tests would make monitoring and dose individualization far more widely available, from centralized laboratories to the bedside and the home, and particularly in resource-limited settings.

Our lab develops tests that measure drug concentrations using the drugs' own biochemical activity rather than by detecting the drug molecules themselves. We have built user-friendly tests that measure the active intracellular forms of several human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) medications, with excellent concordance with gold-standard mass spectrometry. We extended this approach to therapeutic drug monitoring of cytomegalovirus (CMV) medications, measuring ganciclovir triphosphate in infants with congenital CMV, where dosing must avoid both underexposure and toxicity. The same need applies to transplant recipients and other immunocompromised populations. Most recently, we inverted our assay principle: by measuring the activity of reverse transcriptase derived from patient samples, rather than recombinant enzyme, we can measure HIV viral load and detect phenotypic drug resistance in the same rapid and user-friendly format.

Our current focus is on optimizing, validating, and delivering these tests to populations in need both locally and globally, building a unified toolkit for monitoring drug exposure, viral suppression, and drug resistance at the point of need.
Bio:
Ayokunle (Ayo) Olanrewaju is an assistant professor of Bioengineering and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington (UW). His lab develops bioanalytical technologies that decentralize therapeutic drug monitoring, so that quantitative drug-level and drug-resistance measurements can be made at the clinic or the community rather than requiring samples to travel to centralized laboratories. The work rests on two technology pillars: enzymatic assays that use the activity of a target enzyme as a direct readout of drug exposure, viral load, and resistance, and autonomous capillaric microfluidics that run complex liquid handling without pumps, valves, or external power. He applies these tools to HIV, cytomegalovirus, tuberculosis, and cancer, with the aim of making tests usable wherever they are needed, including in low-resource settings.

Ayo received undergraduate and master's degrees in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada, and his Ph.D. in Biological and Biomedical Engineering from McGill University in Montreal. He completed postdoctoral training in mechanical engineering at UW and started as an assistant professor in UW Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering in January 2022. In 2026, he co-founded Ireti Biosciences, a UW spinout commercializing his lab's rapid enzymatic assays for medication monitoring. His lab is supported by an NIH/NIAID R01 and an NIH MIRA (R35), and his awards include the Beckman Young Investigator Award and the International AIDS Society (IAS)/France Recherche Nord & Sud Sida-HIV Hépatites (ANRS) Lange/van Tongeren Prize for Young Investigators.
Wash trading refers to the (illegal) practice of buying and selling securities without changing one’s net position, for the purpose of artificially inflating recorded volume. Evidence suggests that it is widespread on some exchanges where trader identities can be shielded. Wash trading can be hard to reliably distinguish from authentic and lawful strategies such as automated market making. We formulate wash trade detection as a graph clustering problem and apply the Leiden community detection algorithm to the network of all trades. The connectedness guarantees of the resulting partition imply a minimum economic cost that an adversary must incur in order to evade detection. Applying this method (and an alternate, iterative network-based procedure) to the Polymarket exchange, we estimate that wash trading peaked at nearly 60 percent of volume in December 2024 before subsiding substantially by May 2025, with continued activity until through summer 2026.",
