"description":"What happens when we share our research with those who are researching us? Or when the insights from our research are used against us, often in the guise of assistance or protection? And what happens to disability studies research when ethnic, gender, and sexuality studies departments are made to disappear? In this talk, which will likely generate more questions about these questions than answers to them, I bring some of my experiences doing disability studies as a disabled person to bear on a larger work-in-progress on disability marginalia.\n\nCurrently a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Alison Kafer is the Embrey Associate Professor of [redacted] at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the author of Feminist, Queer, Crip, and her work has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies. Being by the water brings her joy, as does making things with clay.\n\nWe want to make our events accessible to all participants. CART services will be provided. To request additional accommodations, please email akheff@umich.edu or davisemm@umich.edu.\n\nOctober 15, 3pm - 4:30pm\nMichigan Union, Kuenzel Room (1st Floor)\nLivestream also available, after Registration.\n\nEvent is free, but registration is required.\nhttps:\/\/sessions.studentlife.umich.edu\/track\/event\/session\/115340\n\nThis event is part of the (Doing) Disability research from the (Disabled Margins) project. "description":"Abstract: \nLiquid\u2013vapor phase change is one of the most effective ways to absorb and reject thermal energy, yet many of the mechanisms governing phase-change heat transfer remain poorly understood. In this talk, I will discuss our recent advances in optical diagnostics that have enabled us to directly probe the physics of boiling heat transfer. We find that bubbles substantially enhance single-phase liquid heat transfer by increasing turbulence within the liquid, enabling a simple model that predicts the boiling curve from optical measurements alone - without machine learning. I will also discuss our measurements of microlayer evaporation, where a new spatial-temporal analysis technique enables accurate determination of microlayer thickness and accommodation coefficient, and motivates a boundary-layer-based scaling law for the initial microlayer thickness. Together, these studies demonstrate how advanced optical measurements can reveal previously inaccessible heat-transfer mechanisms and translate them into predictive models that provide a foundation for designing next generation thermal energy systems.\n\nBiography:\nMatt Hughes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Michigan and currently an editor of the journals Applied Thermal Engineering and AI Thermal Fluids. He was previously a Research Scientist in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the fundamentals of multi-phase flow and heat transfer, autonomous operation of thermal hydraulic systems and experiments, and advanced thermal system design.\n\nFor the most up to date information on the location, please check the related link the week of this event",

"description":"A few hundred million years after the Big Bang, the first generations of stars, galaxies, and active galactic nuclei began to ionize and reheat the cold, dark, and neutral Universe. This special cosmic epoch, known as the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), holds crucial clues to how the first luminous sources evolved and how the earliest cosmic structures assembled. JWST, particularly through its wide-field slit-less spectroscopy (WFSS) capabilities, offers an unprecedented opportunity to connect individual galaxies and black holes to their dark matter halos and the surrounding cosmic web. By obtaining spectra of nearly every source within a field of view, WFSS enables efficient spectroscopic mapping of the three-dimensional early Universe.\n\nIn this talk, I will highlight recent discoveries from several treasury JWST\/NIRCam WFSS surveys, focusing on three interconnected science themes: the growth of early supermassive black holes and their connection to dark matter halos, including the newly discovered population of little red dots; the emergence and assembly of the cosmic web; and the connection between AGNs, galaxies, and cosmic re-ionization. These observations are transforming our understanding of the early Universe, moving beyond individual galaxy discoveries toward statistical spectroscopic samples, three-dimensional maps of the early structures, and measurements linking\ngalaxies to the ionization state of the intergalactic medium.\n\nFinally, I will briefly discuss how the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will build on these JWST discoveries. By extending spectroscopic surveys to cosmological volumes, Roman will enable a new generation of statistical studies of black hole growth, galaxy evolution, large-scale structure, and re-ionization. Together, JWST and Roman are launching an exciting new era of four-dimensional exploration of the early Universe: mapping its three-dimensional structure and evolution across cosmic time.",

"description":"Our goal is to identify sustainable, light-driven routes for CO2 utilization. Prior experiments show that upon excitation by light and subsequent reduction, a simple organic chromophore, p-terphenyl, can reduce and transform CO2 into valuable molecules such as amino acids. These photoredox reactions are attractive because organic chromophores are metal-free and can access highly reactive states upon excitation and quenching that are otherwise energy-intensive. However, the steps of the photoredox cycle and the reasons for the low turnover numbers of these catalysts are poorly understood. We use state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods and automated workflows to delineate mechanisms of steps constituting the catalytic cycle, develop design principles, and leverage these insights to drive the discovery of viable chromophores. The driving force for the desired electron transfer (ET) step to reduce CO2 cannot be increased without simultaneously increasing that for competing deactivation via carboxylation; this indicates the existence of fundamental relationships that limit catalyst performance. Deactivation can also occur via Birch reduction of the catalyst by the radical cation form of the sacrificial electron donor. These steps are highly sensitive to the choice of solvent, as is the quenching of the excited-state catalyst. I will describe our work establishing a protocol for calculating and characterizing excited-state complexes (exciplexes) that are the result of incomplete quenching. I will also share our recent efforts towards applying structural causal frameworks to photoredox chemistry.",
