This lecture explores the evolution of Guyanese and Trinidadian Muslim devotional songbook and music albums featuring pre-Partition, Sufi-influenced, nineteenth-century qasida poetic praise songs brought by Urdu-speaking indentured Indian Muslims to the Caribbean. Professor Aliyah will focus on the material Indo-Caribbean qasida songbook and its subcontinental antecedents, including the popular Indo-Muslim text "Milad-e-Akbar," showing that the Caribbean qasida is a devotional song that propagates Indian Islam and preserves Urdu through performances of religious and cultural authenticity while engaging with global revivalist Islam. The qasida is simultaneously conserved and creolized in transliteration and translation, becoming a cultural art form accessible to Afro-Caribbean people as part of Caribbean postcolonial nation-building.

Aliyah Khan is Director of the Global Islamic Studies Center (GISC), and Associate Professor of English, and Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She specializes in Islam in the Caribbean and the Americas. Dr. Khan has also presented and taught widely on Muslims in comics and graphic novels. Her award-winning book *Far from Mecca: Globalizing the Muslim Caribbean *(Rutgers UP and University of the West Indies Press 2020), is the first monograph on the comparative literature, history, and music of enslaved African Muslims and indentured Indian Muslims and their descendants in Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica. Dr. Khan’s academic work, creative nonfiction, and interviews have appeared in many journals, anthologies, and media venues including *I Will Not Go: Translations, Transformations, and Chutney Fractals *(Kaya Press 2024), *Guernica* magazine, Caribbean Quarterly, *Caribbean Review of Gender Studies*, *Journal of West Indian Literature*, *National Public Radio*, *Times of India*, *Washington Post*, and *Sky TV* (U.K.)

Accommodation: If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us. We look for evidence of the effects induced by seemingly different extensions to the standard cosmological model in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) primary and secondary anisotropies: modified gravity, massive neutrinos and non-vanishing spatial curvature. By looking at their correlations and the differences in the impact they have on cosmological observables, such as the CMB lensing potential spectrum, we assess whether such additions can be told apart and identify the common root to their detection: the lensing anomaly.
2.
This paper studies the teaching of frontier knowledge in higher education and its impact on students. Using text analysis on 2 million course syllabi and 20 million academic articles, we develop a measure called “frontier knowledge proximity,” capturing how closely course content aligns with current scholarly research. We document significant variation in frontier knowledge proximity across courses, even within the same institution, and demonstrate that these differences substantially affect student outcomes. Linking syllabi to individual student records from Texas and leveraging unexpected syllabus updates, we show that increases in proximity improves both educational outcomes (graduation, major retention, and graduate school enrollment) and earnings. Educational gains are notably larger among median-ability and lower-income students, whereas earnings benefits disproportionately accrue to higher-ability and higher-income students. These findings indicate that frontier knowledge exposure can narrow socioeconomic disparities in education but remains complementary to students’ existing resources. We conclude by showing that instructors, particularly research-active faculty, are the main drivers of differences in frontier knowledge proximity
In a previous lecture, we learnt about tropical linear spaces in terms of valuated matroids, or tropical Plucker vectors. In this talk, I'll give a quick overview of some other ways to think about tropical linear spaces: matroid decompositions of the hypersimplex, Chow quotients of the Grassmannian, and membranes. I'll focus on the last of these. A result of Keel and Tevelev states that tropical linear spaces can be identified with membranes, certain subcomplexes of a (Bruhat-Tits) affine building.",
