By taking additive manufacturing as a case study, Dr. Bian will discuss the previous work on the application of AI in advanced manufacturing, such as understanding the parameter-process-structure relationship, monitoring processes in real-time, and characterizing parts. This talk will also discuss the complex questions that arise when incorporating AI into manufacturing research and education, as well as opportunities for industrial engineers.\r\n\r\nDr. Linkan Bian is a program director in the Advanced Manufacturing (AM) cluster of the Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation division of the National Science Foundation (NSF). At his home institute, Mississippi State University, Dr. Bian is the Thomas B. & Terri L. Nusz Endowed Professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. Dr. Bian received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and B.S. in Applied Mathematics from Beijing University. The major themes of Dr. Bian\u2019s research focus on understanding the process-structure-property relationships of additive manufacturing, as well as the investigation of how AI\/ML can transform the modeling and experimental approaches. I analyze the model of sex ratio evolution that Darwin presents in the 1st edition of Descent of Man. I\u2019ll then describe Darwin\u2019s mysterious retraction of that model in the 2nd edition. Darwin\u2019s 1st edition argument traces back to John Arbuthnot\u2019s 1710 article \u201cAn argument for divine providence, taken from the constant regularity observed in the births of both sexes.\u201d There is no evidence that Darwin read Arbuthnot\u2019s article, but Darwin probably read about Arbuthnot\u2019s argument in William Paley\u2019s The Principles of Moral and Political Philosophy. As for the retraction, I\u2019ll argue that Darwin used a style of phylogenetic reasoning in the Origin that would have allowed him to see the error in his earlier argument.
