Ultrasound imaging has co-registered with optical imaging techniques to provide lesion morphology while optical imaging maps out lesion functional activity. The co-registered optical and ultrasound imaging techniques have been implemented on hand-held probes with different configurations suitable for imaging the breast, ovary, and rectum. Ultrasound lesion morphology information has been used for localizing lesions for optical imaging reconstruction and providing diagnostic output. Optical functional parameters and spatial distribution of total hemoglobin and oxygen saturation significantly improve the accuracy of ultrasound diagnosis and treatment response assessment. This talk will also discuss the promising roles of deep learning dual modality fusion models in cancer diagnosis and treatment prediction.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nProfessor Quing Zhu is the Edwin H. Murty Professor of the Biomedical Engineering Department of Washington University in St. Louis. She also has a joint appointment in Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. Professor Quing Zhu has been named a Fellow of OSA, a Fellow of SPIE, and a Fellow of AIMBE. Recent advances in metallicity-sensitive imaging have significantly enhanced our ability to identify these stars, with high potential for new insights on Population III nucleosynthesis, early small-scale galaxy formation, and the assembly history of galaxies. I will present three results highlighting this: (1) the discovery of extended low-metallicity stellar populations around several dwarf galaxies, with a focus on the Tucana II ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, suggesting the presence of extended halos in some of these relic systems; (2) detailed chemical abundance analyses of stars in the outskirts of two of these systems, shedding light on their formation mechanisms; and (3) the detection and characterization of an [Fe\/H] < -4.0 star in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)\u2014the most iron-poor star identified in an external galaxy-- plausibly providing insights on the signatures of extragalactic Population III supernovae as a unique comparison point to analogous signatures seen in the Milky Way. Finally, I will introduce a new large-scale Dark Energy Camera survey, which is employing a metallicity-sensitive narrow-band CaHK filter to image a quarter of the southern sky. What an alarming, fatal pair of crutches, which is here so inseparable religion and sensation!\"\r\n\r\nIn two sentences, Paul Sch\u00fctz, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lepsius Deutsche Orient Mission in Berlin, summarizes and questions the primary humanitarian fundraising strategies of German humanitarians on behalf of Ottoman Armenians starting in the 1890s, namely the exploitation of the public\u2019s religious sensibilities and a common taste for sensationalist stories and images. Examining the textual and visual fundraising material, the talk highlights the link between religious obligations and popular tastes and habits, illustrating how German humanitarians navigated state politics, public opinion, and the desires of a pietist counter-public to mobilize empathy and aid for Ottoman Armenians. The talk explores the intersection of media, performance, and humanitarianism by emphasizing the importance of visual and affective strategies in humanitarian work, the ethical considerations involved, and the historical evolution of these practices.\r\n\r\nMelanie Tanielian is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her monograph\u00a0The Charity of War: Famine, Humanitarian Aid and World War I in the Middle East\u00a0explores the political of provisioning in ameliorating wartime famine on the Ottoman home front. A historian of war and society, Tanielian\u2019s research interests include the social and cultural history of WWI in the Middle East and the history of modern humanitarianism. She is currently working on a new book,\u00a0Fantasies of Humanitarianism\/Humanitarian Fantasies: Germany and the Eastern Mediterranean, 1896-1933\u00a0under contract with Cambridge University Press.\r\n\r\nThis event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.
