Rooted in African American experience, her practice treats what is discarded, overlooked, or missing not as loss, but as a source of meaning that continues to act on the present. Through her process and materials, Porter reveals how memory is carried in the body and embedded in ordinary things. Her work also resists forward-moving notions of time, instead presenting a diasporic temporality in which past, present, and lived experience circulate together through repetition, touch, and recall. In doing so, Porter proposes a vision of history as unfinished, memory as active, and absence as a force that sustains connection and shapes the present. \n\nMarianetta Porter is a visual artist and product designer whose research and creative practice are grounded in the study of African American history, culture, and representation. Through the language of visual art, she draws connections between historic memory and contemporary African American life, giving voice to the history of the African diaspora while acknowledging its central influence on the birth and flourishing of American culture.\n\nHer work has been exhibited nationally at institutions such as the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, the Spoleto Festival, the Harriet Tubman Museum, and the Hampton University Museum of Art.\n\nShe earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hampton University and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. The recipient of numerous awards, Porter is Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan\u2019s Stamps School of Art and Design.\n\nJuana Williams is a curator and writer whose work explores the intersections of cross-border intellectual history, cultural memory, and identity formation as expressed through modern and contemporary art from Africa and its diasporas.\n\nWilliams has held curatorial and academic appointments at organizations including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Library Street Collective, Wayne State University, and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art. Her curatorial projects have been presented at institutions across the United States and France, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Muskegon Museum of Art, Palais de Tokyo (Paris), and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. In addition, she has presented lectures at various museums and universities and contributed to numerous exhibition catalogs. Her work has been written about in publications such as Artsy, Beaux Arts Magazine, Cond\u00e9 Nast Traveller, Michigan Chronicle, and Observer. In the age of bird\u2019s-eye views, which imagined a perspective on American cities and towns from high in the air, balloonists were the only people who actually had the opportunity to see what the growing nation looked like from above. As the nineteenth century progressed, ballooning became a lucrative (if dangerous) business, as crowds gathered to watch balloons launch, and to see aeronauts risk their lives high in the air. Over time, the image of the hot air balloon proliferated in American print culture, being used to sell goods ranging from thread to canned beef. She is also Visiting Professor at University of Michigan, Department of Epidemiology, and Instructor at the University of Columbia's EPISUMMER program in Epidemiology. She earned her PhD in Demography in the United Kingdom.\n\nDr Hennink was indicted into Emory\u2019s MilliPub Club in 2023 and 2024 for two research papers. This honors faculty authors of a scientific publication with over 1,000 citations - considered high impact scholarship. She received the 2020 Provost\u2019s Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Education at Emory University. She also received the 'Excellence in Research' Award in 2019 and the 'Excellence in Teaching' Award in 2016 at the Rollins School of Public Health.\n\nShe has particular expertise in applying qualitative research to examine public health issues. She has 30 years\u2019 experience in the design, conduct, analysis, and publication of qualitative health research. She has authored five textbooks on qualitative research, including: Qualitative Research Methods 2nd edition (2020); Focus Group Discussions (2014), Qualitative Research Methods (2011) (also translated into Chinese) and International Focus Group Discussions (2007). She teaches graduate-level courses in qualitative research at Emory University. Her courses, workshops and books reflect the application of qualitative methods in globally diverse settings and provide guidance on how to balance methodological rigor with the practical realities of global research. She has also published on various methodological aspects of qualitative research, such as using interpreters and translators in qualitative data collection; the effect of using court reporters on data quality; estimating sample size in qualitative studies; and highlighting emerging methodological issues in focus group research. She has served as a board member for SAGE Publications on their \u2018Cases in Methodology\u2019 work and on the editorial board of the International Journal of Multiple Research Approaches. She co-chaired a three-year scientific panel for the International Union of the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP), on \u2018Qualitative Research in Population Studies\u2019 which had a mandate to promote rigor in the use of qualitative methods in the discipline.
