"description":"Abstract:\r\n\r\nNeural-network quantum states (NQS) is an exciting area of quantum-inspired machine learning, wherein in a fully classical neural network is used to efficiently learn the optimal state vector for a quantum unsupervised learning problem, bypassing the need to model the full exponentially large state space. In theory, NQS architectures are broadly applicable, and have been demonstrated successfully on several fundamental applications. We seek to further explore the practical utility of NQS as a black box solver for various applications in the scientific computing domain. We first present NQS as an explicit avenue for de-quantizing variational quantum eigensolvers, demonstrating with the variational quantum linear solver (VQLS). We then explore the utility of VQLS and its de-quantization, VNLS, as black box solvers for a Newton-based linear complementarity solver, used to model the time evolution of a rudimentary soil system. We introduce a new retentive network (RetNet) autoregressive NQS ansatz to solve electronic ground state calculations in computational quantum chemistry, and we finish with a scaling law analysis of the RetNet architecture and its immediate autoregressive predecessors as applied to electronic structure calculations.\r\n\r\nHybrid Defense:\r\n5822 East Hall\r\nhttps:\/\/umich.zoom.us\/j\/92606555957",

"description":"The adaptive immune system of vertebrates is able to learn from past experiences to better suit an unforeseen future. This is made possible by a diverse and dynamic repertoire of lymphocytes expressing unique antigen receptors and capable of rapid evolution within an individual. However, naturally occurring immune responses exhibit limits in efficacy, speed and capacity to adapt to new challenges. In this talk, I will present conceptual and computational frameworks to (1) explore functional impact of non-equilibrium antigen recognition and (2) identify conditions under which natural selection acting local in time can find adaptable solutions favorable in the long run \u2013 in light of viral-immune coevolution. Using these examples, I show that immune cells can exploit physical constraints to extract signal and expand their adaptive potential. Considering information propagation from receptor to repertoire and back lets us rethink the logic behind proofreading, in a dynamical system that demands precision and balance while facing perpetual disturbances.",

"description":"Gravitational waves stretch and squeeze space, but even when the wave has passed there is a residual stretch and squeeze known as gravitational wave memory. In particular, the merger of binary black holes results in gravitational wave memory. I will discuss the prospects for measuring memory from binary black hole mergers.\r\n\r\nThough gravitational wave memory is a consequence of the nonlinear Einstein field equations, it can be most easily understood by using linear perturbation theory with the Weyl tensor as the basic variable. Gravitational perturbation theory using the Weyl tensor is analogous to Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism. Correspondingly, there is an electromagnetic analog of gravitational wave memory called electromagnetic memory. I will present a proposal for how to measure electromagnetic memory.",
