Goldfarb", "event_type":"Presentation", "event_type_id":"16", "description":"David Goldfarb, independent scholar and host of \"Encounters with Polish and Ukrainian Literature,\" a YouTube program sponsored by the Polish Cultural Institute in New York, will give a talk coinciding with the Martin Luther King memorial holiday, entitled \"Ignatz Waghalter and the Negro Symphony Orchestra (1938-40).\" This is a strange and fascinating story. The talk will take place in the Modern Languages Building, Room 3308, from 4:30 to 6:00 PM.\r\n\r\n\r\nAbout the Talk\r\nComposer William Grant Still published an essay in 1939, \u201cA Negro Symphony Orchestra,\u201d imagining the possibilities that could be opened by having an all-Black orchestra of national stature that would be an inspiration to Black youth \u201cand to America as a whole,\u201d and would introduce new energy into classical music by involving musicians skilled in jazz. His dream was consonant with the ideas of W.E.B. DuBois, who in \u201cThe Souls of Black Folk,\u201d argued that classical music played an essential political role in the \u201cuplift\u201d of the race, and nineteenth-century educator James Monroe Trotter, who saw classical music as a means of demonstrating the right of African Americans to participate in American democracy as \u201cfull-fledged citizens.\u201d\r\nThere had been a number of African American orchestras by that time, but just such an ensemble with international ambitions had formed in Harlem in 1938 and incorporated officially as \u201cThe Negro Symphony Orchestra,\u201d curiously under the baton of conductor and composer Ignatz Waghalter (1881-1949), who found himself in New York after fleeing Nazi Germany. Waghalter came from a Warsaw family of Jewish musicians, klezmorim who played weddings and circuses. He had smuggled himself illegally into Germany as a teenager to study classical music and rose to prominence as the director of the Deutsches Opernhaus in Berlin from 1912-23. He also served as a visiting conductor for major institutions from the National Opera in Riga to the New York State Symphony. In New York he joined forces with leading figures in the Harlem Renaissance including James Weldon Johnson, Judge James S. Watson, orchestra manager Leviticus Lyon and conductor A. Jack Thomas to form \u201cThe Negro Symphony Orchestra.\u201d Waghalter composed a choral work with lyrics by Judge Watson called \u201cAmerica, Our Shining Light,\u201d addressing themes of bigotry, racism, anti-immigrant sentiment, and the hope of America. When the orchestra collapsed after the outbreak of World War II, Waghalter was working on a composition specifically for this orchestra, called the \u201cNew World Suite.\u201d This presentation will discuss what archives at Yale and in New York reveal about the orchestra and Waghalter\u2019s collaboration with it.\r\n\r\nAbout David A. Goldfarb\r\nDavid A. Goldfarb is an independent scholar of Polish literature and literary theory, and a literary translator from Polish to English. He produces and hosts the monthly video series \u201cEncounters with Polish and Ukrainian Literature,\u201d supported by the Polish Cultural Institute New York, now entering its sixth year, and is a writer for a documentary film about Polish-Jewish composer Ignatz Waghalter and the Negro Symphony Orchestra in Harlem. His main current translation project is Agata Tuszy\u0144ska\u2019s \u201cThe Black Handbag\u201d and he has a residency from the Polish Book Institute to work on Tuszy\u0144ska\u2019s novel about Bruno Schulz\u2019s fianc\u00e9e, J\u00f3zefina Szeli\u0144ska, in Warsaw this summer. From mid-2010 to the end of 2013, he was Curator of Literature and Humanities Programming at the Polish Cultural Institute in New York, a diplomatic mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. Prior to that he was an Assistant Professor of Slavic Literatures and Comparative Literature at Barnard College, Columbia University.\r\nHe holds a doctorate in Comparative Literature from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He has published articles on Bruno Schulz, Zbigniew Herbert, Stanis\u0142aw Ignacy Witkiewicz, Mikhail Lermontov, and East European cinema in such journals as \u201cEast European Politics and Societies,\u201d \u201cIndiana Slavic Studies,\u201d \u201cPhilosophy and Literature,\u201d \u201cProoftexts,\u201d \u201cThe Polish Review,\u201d \u201cSlavic and East European Performance,\u201d and \u201cJewish Quarterly,\u201d and he has published book chapters on Jozef Wittlin, Witold Gombrowicz, and Nikolai Gogol and Giuseppe Arcimboldo. In the last 40 years, affirmative action, racial inequality, and racial discrimination have entered the national political agenda. Black activists have long demanded specific policies to improve the social, economic, and political situation of Afro-Brazilians. The implementation of affirmative action policies in higher education has emphasized the significance of race, class, and social inclusion. Black politicians and leaders are often the most committed defenders of affirmative action and pro-racial equality policies. This lecture will focus on leading Black activists and organizations and their demands for social change. Afro-Brazilians are dramatically underrepresented among Brazil\u2019s political elite. This presentation will also examine the degree to which Black elected and appointed officials prioritize Afro-Brazilians in their work. Which political parties and states of the country have produced more Afro-Brazilian government officials? Workers\u2019 Party\/PT presidents Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva and Dilma Rouseff have appointed more Black cabinet members than other presidents. Despite advances in racial representation, Afro-Brazilians remain in a fragile socio-economic and political situation. Their concerns and welfare are not top priorities for Brazil\u2019s most powerful and influential leaders.\r\n\r\nBIOGRAPHY: Dr. Ollie Johnson is a scholar of Black political experiences across the Americas. He is a Professor in the Department of African American Studies at Wayne State University, where he has taught courses such as Black Social and Political Thought and Pan Africanism: Politics of the Black Diaspora. His primary fields of inquiry are African American, Afro-Brazilian, and Afro-Latin American politics, with particular expertise in Black political activism, representation, and the transnational dimensions of Black political movements. Dr. Johnson received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.A. in Political Science from UC Berkeley, an M.A. in Brazilian Studies from Brown University, and a B.A. in Afro-American Studies and International Relations from Brown University.
