Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, they\u2019ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA \u201923) and Erin McKenna (MFA \u201920)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA \u201920) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA \u201920)\nPhase 3 (September 12 - November 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA \u201920) and Nathan Byrne (MFA \u201921)\nPhase 2 Curatorial Statement\n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Sally Clegg (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Kim Karlsrud (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the Division Street pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the Courtyard pillar, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMich\u2019s famous \u201crock\u201d to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form. \n\nSally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock\nSentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950\u2019s, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest, creativity, and ritual, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as \u201cFordite\u201d (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called \u2018Detroit agate\u2019), Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed, sculpted, sealed, assembled, and macro-photographed, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice. \n\nKim Karlsrud: What Amasses\nWhat Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement, expression, coherence, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged, photographed, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial. \nArtist Statements\/Bios\n\nSally Clegg \nSally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history, popular culture, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity, absurdity, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves. \n\nClegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University, The New York Public Library, and elsewhere. Her artwork and writing has appeared in ASAP\/Journal, BOMB Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, and Hyperallergic. She is a lecturer in Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\n\nKim Karlsrud \nKim Karlsrud is the co-founder of Commonstudio, a collaborative creative practice that develops socio-ecological and spatial interventions, installations, and initiatives working with and within urban landscapes. Her work explores the space between art and design, and is grounded in the concept of the \u201ccommons,\u201d that which is shared, as well as that which is ordinary, banal, and commonplace.\n\nKarlsrud completed her undergraduate degree in Product Design from Otis College of Art and Design and an MFA in Art from the University of Michigan. She is currently an Assistant Visiting Professor in the College of Design at the University of Oregon, teaching across Art and Landscape Architecture departments. "description":"Abstract:\nConventional Li-ion battery electrolytes have been designed to optimize numerous desirable properties, including interfacial and thermal stability, conductivity, and low flammability. However, all conventional liquid Li + -bearing electrolytes still possess low Li + transference (t + ) numbers, where current passed through them is primarily carried by the counteranion, resulting in large concentration gradients that limit battery performance, particularly at high discharge and charging rates.\n\nThe development of high t + electrolytes\u2014those in which most (or all) current is carried by the Li + ion\u2014could enable safer battery cycling, faster charging rates, and thicker, more energy-dense cathode designs in Li-ion batteries. This presentation will outline our attempts to develop high t + electrolytes using two strategies. In the first, Li-neutralized polyanions are used as a salt in nonaqueous liquid electrolytes (so-called nonaqueous polyelectrolyte solutions). In this configuration, Li ions, when appropriately solvated, have hydrodynamic radii much smaller than the polymer chain\u2019s size, ostensibly allowing them to diffuse or migrate faster than their appended counteranions, and hence enable high t + electrolytes. Ultimately, I show this picture to be oversimplified, and that anion-anion and cation-anion correlations severely limit the t + of high conductivity polyelectrolyte solutions. In the second, we suspend Li-ion conducting inorganic particles, which have both high conductivity and unity Li + transference numbers, in organic electrolytes.\n\nThe development of these organic-inorganic composite electrolytes could enable solid state batteries, an important emerging energy storage technology that has been hindered by the poor processability of thin-film pure inorganic ion conductors. Although the composite electrolyte field is highly active due to the processability advantages composite electrolytes possess, researchers are still puzzled about why, in most cases, no significant improvement in the electrolyte conductivity is observed after incorporating inorganic particles, whose conductivity is orders of magnitude larger than that of polymer electrolytes at room temperature.\n\nI will present our efforts to quantify phase contributions to ion transport in model inorganic-organic systems, ultimately showing that three critical factors govern the conductivity of composite electrolytes: Li + -desolvation dynamics, Li + -transference number in the organic phase, and the ceramic particle size. Using this knowledge, we show that certain composite configurations have enhanced conductivity and substantially higher transference numbers than the pure model organic electrolyte alone.\n\nSpeaker Bio:\nBryan McCloskey is the Department Chair and Warren & Katharine Schlinger Distinguished Professor in Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a joint appointment as a Faculty Chemical Engineer in the Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His laboratory explores numerous applications of electrochemistry to energy sustainability, conversion, and storage. Current projects focus on elucidating the fundamental electrochemistry of metal-air batteries and understanding a variety of challenges facing Li-ion and Na-ion batteries, including high voltage cathode-electrolyte interfacial stability and organic-inorganic composites for solid-state batteries.\u00a0He has co-authored more than 175 articles and has won numerous awards for his research, including The Electrochemical Society Charles Tobias Award, The International Society of Electrochemistry Tajima Prize, and the VW\/BASF Science Award- Electrochemistry. These efficacy failures are primarily due to inherent species-specific differences, fundamental biological variances between model organisms and humans, and the limitations of existing models to accurately reflect the complexity of human disease and treatment responses. In this discussion, I will explore how the NIH and FDA are advocating for new alternative methodologies (NAMs) to reduce or replace animal testing. I will highlight recent advancements in technologies such as stem cells, organoids, and microphysiological systems (MPS), along with the roles of clinical genomics and AI\/ML. Additionally, I will examine how these platforms can collaboratively enhance our understanding of rare orphan diseases, facilitate drug discovery, support precision medicine, and enable clinical trials in a dish (CTiD).\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nJoseph C. Wu, MD, PhD is Director of Stanford Cardiovascular Institute and Simon H. Stertzer, MD, Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Stanford University. Dr. Wu received his MD from Yale University and PhD (Molecular & Medical Pharmacology) at University of California, Los Angeles. He is board certified in cardiovascular medicine. His lab works on genomics, stem cells\/organoids, AI\/ML, and drug discovery. The main goals are to (i) understand basic disease mechanisms, (ii) implement precision medicine for patients, and (iii) accelerate drug discovery via \u201cnew alternative methodologies\u201d (NAMs) and \u201cclinical trial in a dish\u201d (CTiD) concept. Dr. Wu has published >700 manuscripts with H-index of 147 on Google scholar. He is listed as top 0.1% of highly cited researchers by Web of Science for past 7 years (2018-2024). Dr. Wu has received several awards, including the NIH Director\u2019s New Innovator Award, NIH Roadmap Transformative Award, Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) given out by President Obama at the White House, American Heart Association (AHA) Distinguished Scientist Award, AHA Merit Award, and Burroughs Wellcome Foundation Innovation in Regulatory Science Award. Dr. Wu serves on the FDA Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapies Advisory Committee. He is on the Board of the Keystone Symposia and American Heart Association. He is a past President of the American Heart Association (2023-2024).
