H. Waddington Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. I received my PhD from New York University and postdoctoral training at Princeton University. I joined Harvard Medical School as an Assistant Professor in 1991 and was appointed a Professor of Pathology in 2004. In 2009 I joined the Newborn Medicine Division of Boston Children\u2019s Hospital.\r\n\r\nI am interested in identifying key epigenetic regulators in cancer, elucidating their mechanism of action and providing the conceptual basis for translating our basic findings to the clinic via the development of new therapeutic strategies. With the discovery of the first histone methyl eraser, LSD1, in 2004, our group demonstrated that histone methylation is dynamically regulated, which overturned the long-held dogma that such modifications were static and irreversible. We have also discovered many additional histone demethylases with different specificities, and novel readers, including those that specifically recognize unmodified lysine and arginine and suggest that the unmodified states are not simply a ground neutral state of epigenetic information but rather likely code for epigenetic information as modified states. Importantly, many of these chromatin enzymes and readers have since been implicated in various types of human cancers, indicating an important role of chromatin regulation in tumorigenesis.\r\n\r\nMore recently, we have also been studying RNA modifications and how they impact gene expression regulation. In many ways this exciting field parallels the early days of chromatin biochemistry and biology, i.e., the nature and the biological and pathological functions of RNA modifications, as well as the enzymes responsible for writing, erasing and reading them, are just beginning to be understood.\r\n\r\nAt Ludwig Oxford, my lab is focusing on two questions. First, how to convert \u201ccold tumors to \u201chot\u201d and how to sustain durable responses to cancer immune checkpoint blockade therapy. Using employer-employee matched data from Washington State and a fuzzy regression discontinuity design around the eligibility threshold for UI, we find that benefit receipt minimally delays re-employment but substantially improves labor market outcomes. UI increases cumulative hours worked by approximately 15 full-time weeks and earnings by $14,000 in the two years following job loss, representing 37% and 50% increases, respectively. These gains are driven by improved job quality, as recipients experience longer tenure and higher wages with their next employer. Effects are larger for workers living near public employment offices, suggesting that access to re-employment services enhances search productivity. How does this reduced electronic dimensionality shape the motion of photoexcited charge, and does it survive when a material is driven far from equilibrium? This nonequilibrium regime is central to both light-driven material function and the emergence of transient states that have no equilibrium counterpart. Answering these questions requires a probe that combines femtosecond time resolution with sensitivity to individual atomic sites. In this talk, I will introduce our development of table-top ultrafast extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy for single-crystalline van der Waals materials. Broadband XUV pulses access multiple elemental core-level transitions simultaneously, allowing us to distinguish the responses of electronically active metal sites from those of surrounding ligands. I will present our latest measurements of charge redistribution, screening, and coherent lattice motion in van der Waals materials, and discuss how these results open a site-resolved view of the 2D electronic world far from equilibrium.\n\nBio:\nYuki Kobayashi is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and a fellow of the Quantum Research Institute at the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley and was a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University.
