Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte\u2019s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte\u2019s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. Inspired by the rebuilding of Tulsa\u2019s Greenwood neighborhood following the 1921 Tulsa Massacre, Lowe started *Black Wall Street Journey* in 2018 and has since produced numerous public art presentations, installations, research, and other projects. At UMMA, *Re and De Imagining Black Progress* includes new paintings, sculpture, and public installations that turn eight years of research into bold visual form that together examine how Black prosperity, resilience, and self-determination are represented, measured, and understood.\r\n\r\nA significant amount of Lowe\u2019s research took place during his three-year residency at U-M\u2019s Institute for Social Research (ISR) and included deep engagement with researchers, data scientists and dozens of students. To mark the opening, Lowe will be joined by key collaborators Director of ISR Kathleen Cagney, U-M Political Science Professor Christian Davenport, and exhibition curator Abigail Winograd.
