We find that bubbles substantially enhance single-phase liquid heat transfer by increasing turbulence within the liquid, enabling a simple model that predicts the boiling curve from optical measurements alone - without machine learning. I will also discuss our measurements of microlayer evaporation, where a new spatial-temporal analysis technique enables accurate determination of microlayer thickness and accommodation coefficient, and motivates a boundary-layer-based scaling law for the initial microlayer thickness. These photoredox reactions are attractive because organic chromophores are metal-free and can access highly reactive states upon excitation and quenching that are otherwise energy-intensive. However, the steps of the photoredox cycle and the reasons for the low turnover numbers of these catalysts are poorly understood. We use state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods and automated workflows to delineate mechanisms of steps constituting the catalytic cycle, develop design principles, and leverage these insights to drive the discovery of viable chromophores. The driving force for the desired electron transfer (ET) step to reduce CO2 cannot be increased without simultaneously increasing that for competing deactivation via carboxylation; this indicates the existence of fundamental relationships that limit catalyst performance. Deactivation can also occur via Birch reduction of the catalyst by the radical cation form of the sacrificial electron donor. These steps are highly sensitive to the choice of solvent, as is the quenching of the excited-state catalyst. I will describe our work establishing a protocol for calculating and characterizing excited-state complexes (exciplexes) that are the result of incomplete quenching. As a case example, I will describe our work on the the cosmopolitan plant white clover, where we are examining how various anthropogenic disturbances affect all major mechanisms of evolution. I will describe our global studies examining whether urbanization affects phenotypic and genomic evolution. I will then explore whether invasive populations can adapt to novel environments in their invaded range, including the role of functional traits and structural variants across the genome in these adaptations. Finally, I will explore whether populations can adapt to rapid climate change through time in introduced and native ranges. The results from the white clover system provide insight into when species are likely to be able to adapt to anthropogenic disturbance, and when they may be unable to adapt. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.\u00a0\n\u201cI see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?\u201d\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. Reviewing *shady* characters, like lazurite and azurite, will shed light on ancient artisanal capabilities, technical knowledge, and even trade connections that reveal the extent to which ancient people traveled and experimented in order to obtain blue. The development in the late 4th millennium BCE of a synthetic blue pigment, Egyptian blue, made it possible not only to paint in blue but also to use this material in ways other than as a pigment. A combined approach allows us to better tease out the variables and complexities in the *chaine operatoire* (procedural steps) behind the creation and application of these pigments, using experimental archaeology paired with ancient texts and artifact analysis. His ongoing Metamorphosis series explores the intersection of fashion, identity, and impermanence through iconic sneaker silhouettes layered with cherry blossoms and butterflies. The paintings contrast the fleeting nature of sneaker trends with the enduring cultural legacy of classic designs, using these instantly recognizable forms to examine themes of time, memory, social status, and our shared perceptions of style and performance. Like the blossoms and butterflies that drift beyond our control, the works suggest that while fashion and life are transient, a rare few ideas and objects leave an indelible mark across generations.\n\nToday, Ward serves as design director of footwear at Adidas, where he leads the design team for Originals Running. This talk advances a framework for human augmentation through embodied social intelligence, grounded in three key dimensions. First, human-centered robot design, where I discuss methods to meaningfully involve people throughout a robot development lifecycle, while balancing the need for general-purpose systems with the specificity of human needs. Second, embodied AI systems, where I introduce my work on robotic hardware fabrication and context-agnostic algorithms that enable robust, real-world interaction. Third, robot evaluation in the wild, focusing on deployments in domains such as healthcare and the need for new metrics that combine experimental rigor with system performance. Drawing from my experience across academia and industry, including building Astro at Amazon and working on critical AI challenges at Meta, I highlight open problems at the intersection of AI, robotics, and human-centered design. Ultimately, I argue for a shift in robotics: from intelligence to relationships, from capability to meaning. It\u2019s a course where, per the syllabus, students \"develop the capacity to work independently by identifying, exploring, and pursuing a single independent project that involves multiple iterations.\" \n\nStamps Lecturer & Student Exhibitions Coordinator Sally Clegg notes, \"Each student takes their own path, encountering questions that can shape the direction of their creative practice\u2014how do I manage my time? How much constraint vs. freedom do I thrive on? What subject matter do I care about most deeply? How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker\u2019s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods, emergent passions, creative risks taken, iterations and reiterations, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year\u2019s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory, identity, materiality, ecology, technology, labor, social relationships, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research, experimentation, critique, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently, remain responsive to new discoveries, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating, testing, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation, others through drawing, installation, performance, digital media, social engagement, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making, reflection, critique, and revision. In a sense, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year\u2019s exhibition. It marks a point at which students begin moving beyond solving assignments toward constructing independent practices, developing the habits of inquiry, critical reflection, and experimentation that will continue to shape their work well beyond SYS.\n\n\n\nExhibiting Artists and Designers\n
