Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines, 1890-1920 (September 28, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64238 64238-16258504@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, September 28, 2019 8:00am

Thanks to advances in color lithography and photo-engraving as well as resurgent interest in small-press publishing, richly illustrated and typeset “little magazines” flourished between 1890 and 1920. The materials collected in this exhibit, all held in the Special Collections Research Center, showcase not only the variety, beauty, and originality of turn-of-the-century print-making, but also new ideas about what a magazine can do: namely, create distinctive communities around avant-garde ideas outside of mainstream channels. The communities imagined in these magazines are sometimes explicitly political or aesthetic, but more often both combine in writers’ and artists’ resistance to mass-market, industrial, bourgeois, and nationalist print cultures.

The magazines in this exhibit are mostly American and British, but many are distinctively cosmopolitan, crossing borders to engage with international movements like socialism, decadence, and modernism in their attempts to create an audience united by aesthetic and political ideals rather than nationality. Although the little magazines’ resistance to mainstream journalism shortened their lifespan and restricted their circulation, their experimental approach has had a lasting impact on our sense of magazines as flexible aesthetic and social media.

Civitates Orbis Terrarum (Cities of the World), the first standardized city atlas, contains over 540 maps and views between its six volumes. First published in 1572 by Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590), Civitates was first intended as a companion to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. New editions of the city atlas continued to be printed through 1617. Hogenberg, one of the most prolific engravers of the time, was joined by many other engravers in creating the Civitates. Braun edited the work and provided the descriptions of the cities on the verso of each plate. This exhibit contains 18 works from the Civitates, including many from the Clark Library’s holdings. Also included are reproductions of large panoramas Amsterdam, London, and St. Petersburg that reflect the evolution of city mapping through the 17th and 18th centuries.

This exhibit of Steve Wirtz’ sculptures features a selection of his Dynamic Football series and animal works. The Dynamic Football laminated paper works explore compositions of action, allowing the artist to exploit the properties of the medium. The pieces are constructed by gluing many layers of paper over wire armatures. When dry, the sculptures are painted in an often splashy, sketchy style. Wirtz’ silly animal works are what the artist is best known for, and they take shape in his Goetzville, Michigan studio.

Brighton, Michigan artist Jeff Joseph’s introduction to art making was drawing pencil sketches of his junior high classmates. His specialty is sports arts, and he has a license to create art for several universities including U-M, Ohio State and Michigan State. His work is about the quiet moments of sports as well as the shifting and complex panorama of all sports. Danielle Eubank is an award-winning artist who has been on four international sailing expeditions and painted every ocean on the planet to raise awareness about the oceans and climate change. Her large paintings are emotive abstract portraits of specific bodies of water. The Oil on Water exhibition features Eubank’s oil on linen paintings of the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. She creates patterns within patterns, representing vertical stacks of rhythms. The undulating forms, such as water ripples, oil slicks, and refuse, combined with the memories that water evokes, makes her work eye-opening, yet soothing and sensual.

Introverted and shy by nature, Laura Cavanagh uses her art as an outlet to create humorous larger than life personalities. In Pen & Ink Queens, Cavanagh draws inspiration from medieval and renaissance-era garments to adorn quirky, queenly figures. Cavanagh works in a style that is hyper-detailed and intricate, so she remains present during the creative process. A true Michigander, Cavanagh was born and raised in Southeast Michigan, attended U-M, and currently works in Detroit. Cavanagh makes a concerted effort to exhibit as much as possible in her home state, and when she is not in her studio, you can find her cooking, practicing yoga or playing with her cat, Benji.

Victoria (Vika) Bulgakova grew up in Ukraine, a part of the former Soviet Union. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1994, and for the next 22 years, New York became her home. In 2016, she moved to Michigan to pursue an MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She found the raw beauty of Detroit inspiring and kept her metalsmithing studio practice in the city. The copper and brass vessels in her Ваза series and other included works are a meditation on fluidity of memories: their ability to shift from reflection to re-invention over time. Each vessel potentially holds something within its boundaries, whether tangible or not.

On the 300th anniversary of the publication of The Life and Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner, this exhibit interrogates the troubled legacy of Daniel Defoe’s seminal English novel. It also explores how creators have pushed back against the colonialist, hyper-masculine, and racist ethos of the text by using the castaway narrative to explore self-sufficiency, otherness, and the role of gendered and racialized ideas in constructing the self.

This novel of shipwreck, survival, and rescue has become a cultural touchstone. Today, many people who haven’t read the novel still feel familiar with key plot elements, Robinson Crusoe, and Friday. Yet, there is less familiarity with how both the original text and many of the adaptations of Robinson Crusoe have fed into and reinforced narratives of imperialism and racism. Drawing on the Hubbard Collection of Imaginary Voyages - one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of editions, translations, adaptations, and spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe - Other Crusoes, Other Islands seeks to understand how readers and writers have engaged with the story since its initial publication in 1719.

Content Advisory: Please be aware that some items in this exhibit feature racist imagery and potentially painful content. Although Robinson Crusoe is often treated as children’s literature and this exhibit includes children’s books and board games, it is not an exhibit geared towards children and reflects the significant shifts over time in ideas about what is appropriate for children.

From Negritude, to the Anti-Apartheid movement, to Mizrahi Jewish claims to being Black Panthers, to Asian/African/Caribbean coalitions in the United Kingdom, to articulations by German and French youth today, this symposium will address the ways in which “Blackness” has been mobilized to make claims on state and other resources. It will engage the anti-normative forms of living Blackness has enabled. Given these histories and contemporary articulations, it asks: Who can claim Blackness? Under what conditions and with what effect can one make this claim? To what extent does claiming Blackness lead to social change? What are the conditions for coalition around claiming Blackness? Does racism persist, even amongst people of color, in spite of this coalitional claim?

The symposium is free and open to the public and will include a special screening of the documentary Whose Streets? (2018) and the short What Kind of Power Y’All Got (2016) with a Q&A with the filmmakers to follow in Lecture Hall II of the Modern Language Building on Friday, September 27 at 7 PM.

Nature a Moment: Visions of the World from Three Korean-American Artists (September 28, 2019 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/67493 67493-16866547@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, September 28, 2019 10:00am
Location: Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Organized By: Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum

Three Chicago-area Korean-American artists render deeply personal interpretations of the natural world in the exhibit “Nature a Moment” at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Using woodcut, painting on canvas, and mixed media, Linda Hyong, Sung Eun Hong, and Seong Ok Lee explore the world of flowers, gardens, and nature in vivid works that slow time to a fleeting present moment.

Linda Hyong is a University of Michigan alumna and former teaching assistant in the U-M Stamps School of Art & Design. She draws her inspiration from Claude Monet’s water lily garden in France to create her own modern interpretation of impressionism. Seong Ok Lee is inspired by flowers, which she believes are the most beautiful forms in nature. In her dream-like, nearly abstract paintings, Sung Eun Hong communicates her vision of what she calls “pure dreams and fantasy.”

Exhibit runs September 14 through November 15, 2019 at the

University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens, 1800 N. Dixboro Rd., Ann Arbor. Free.

Refugees have been at the forefront of political discussion in the United States as the Syrian crisis escalates and xenophobia heightens. Much has been said regarding these refugees, but all too often the voices of refugees themselves are left out of the conversation.

This exhibit uses the data collected from a Photovoice project, combining photography and transcriptions from groups discussions with adolescent refugees to better understand the lived experiences of adolescent refugees. The gallery highlights five main themes that were discussed: Stability and Security, Interpersonal Difficulties, Rooting Factors, Personal Growth, and Contribution.

“I wish I could help out people… Imma give them everything. Because they are my people, I have to save my people.” -Alex

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (September 28, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53718 53718-13452725@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, September 28, 2019 11:00am

Can abstract art be about politics? In the early 1970s, that question was hotly debated as artists, critics, and the public grappled with the relationship between art, politics, race, and feminism. Many of those debates centered on bringing to light the roles that gender and race played in how “great modern art” was defined and assessed, and on employing art to advance civil rights. Within this discourse, abstraction had an especially fraught role. To many, the decision by women artists and artists of color to make abstract art seemed to represent a retreat from politics and protest: an abnegation of a commitment to civil rights and feminism. "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Al Loving, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.

Lead support for "Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Additional generous support is provided by the Robert and Janet Miller Fund and the University of Michigan Department of Political Science.

In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s, artists, critics, and the public grappled with the relationship between art, politics, race, and feminism. During these decades, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction, Color, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.

Exhibition Dates: September 20 - November 10, 2019

Guest Curator: Allison Collins, Media Arts Curator, Western Front

Curated by Allison Collins in collaboration with Carrie Edinger and Srimoyee Mitra.
In partnership with the New Media Caucus

Human migration is a defining issue of the 21st century, often calling into question the relevance, role, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed, defensive and receptive, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control responds to these conditions with an open-ended question, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality, the winds, currents, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.

Drawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media, Border Control assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts, patterns of migration, displacement, and statelessness. Collectively, they offer projects with subterfuge, refusal, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.

Far from being frowned upon as uncreative, in China, Korea, and Japan, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world.

Lead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Nam Center for Korean Studies, School of Information, and College of Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Fabrication Studio at the Duderstadt Center, the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and SeeMeCNC 3D Printers.

Infant Skull II, a woven “tapestry” made out of very fine aluminum wire, only reveals its shape when seen from afar. Drawing inspiration from his country’s basketry traditions, the South African artist Walter Oltmann (b. 1960) alternates densely layered sections with open spaces, allowing the underlying surface of the work to show through. The skull that emerges is, in a South African context, evocative of the Cradle of Humankind—a series of caves outside Johannesburg, where some of the oldest hominin fossils in the world have been found.

The work complements UMMA’s renowned and growing collection of historical and contemporary African art and reminds us of the central role of Africa in the history of humankind. The purchase was made possible thanks to the generosity of UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee.

This acquisition was made possible by the generosity of the UMMA Director's Acquisition Committee, 2016.

The human body is made of more than 37 trillion cells. Most of them need to be replaced every couple of months, weeks, or sometimes in the course of only a few days. Our cells grow and divide constantly to get this massive job done. But how do cells replicate themselves? How do things move in, out, and around the cell, and into new cells? Join us as we explore how our bodies carry out this massive process. We will learn about cell structure and division and observe cells up-close and in action!

Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan), involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples, pyramids, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts, values, and daily lives. This exhibition explores the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos, text, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.

On this tour, explore the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos, text, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered in a rock-cut temple by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please call the Kelsey at 734-764-9304 at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

The 59th University of Michigan Organ Conference “Building Bach: His Foundations and Futures” takes place Saturday, September 28 through Monday, October 1. Johann Sebastian Bach is often portrayed as a solitary colossus, dwarfing his contemporaries and casting a long shadow on his successors. This conference provides an opportunity to assess Bach within the context of his foundational artistic influences, his exchanges with his contemporaries, and his influence on later composers, extending to present-day projects. Registration to attend the daily conference required (Students are free, $100 for non-students, $50 for single day), register at myumi.ch/LBQE8

Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines, 1890-1920 (September 29, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64238 64238-16258505@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, September 29, 2019 8:00am

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (September 29, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53718 53718-13452779@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, September 29, 2019 12:00pm

Copies and Invention in East Asia (September 29, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64052 64052-16109196@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, September 29, 2019 2:00pm

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

A museum docent will interpret the complex ways that Asian artists have produced multiple artworks through time.

Lead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Nam Center for Korean Studies, School of Information, and College of Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Fabrication Studio at the Duderstadt Center, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and SeeMeCNC 3D Printers.

The Premodern Colloquium. Reading Storied Ground in Medieval Rome (September 29, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65741 65741-16651984@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, September 29, 2019 4:00pm

This paper argues that medieval Romans read elements in the city-scape to discover the evidence of sacred history. I use three case studies linked to saints Peter and Paul: divots in the Forum’s paving, an ancient Roman votive offering, and some springs at the church of Tre Fontane. The divots in the Forum’s pavement were damage, which Romans read as as signs of Christian history, claiming them as the knee prints left by Peter and Paul when they prayed for Simon Magus’ defeat. The votive offering is a pair of sculpted footprints. By the thirteenth century, ignoring this origin, Romans read them as Jesus’s footprints, left on the spot where he greeted Peter at the walls of Rome. Both cases display a dominant factor in medieval people’s material imagination: the ability to read the stories they knew in the things they saw. The springs at Tre Fontane are a third kind of thing, a natural phenomenon, and they add a new kind of reading. Tre Fontane was taken as the site of Paul’s decapitation, after which his head bounced three times, each bounce creating a spring. This story differs from the preceding cases in that it was the product of reading both the landscape and images of Paul’s martyrdom, which together suggested information absent from text. Taken together, the three cases indicate that medieval Romans read their city’s urban and natural features in creative, sophisticated and contingent ways.

Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines, 1890-1920 (September 30, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64238 64238-16258506@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 30, 2019 8:00am

This series of paintings was inspired by the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and the images of migrant families being separated and detained at the US-Mexico border that dominated media outlets across the nation since the summer of 2017. The exhibition also includes nearly 100 I.D. photos of migrant children from a Texas holding center. Buentello took the photos in 2014 while working for an intake agency.

"Focusing on images from the US media sources that exposed the violence of migrants’ dehumanization, vulnerability, fear, loss, and criminalization, the paintings document the embodiment of state-authorized brutality and erasures of personhood." -Ruth Leonela Buentello

Abstract: To develop a complete description of sensory encoding, it is necessary to account for trial-to-trial variability in cortical neurons. Using a generalized linear model with terms corresponding to the visual stimulus, mouse running speed, and experimentally measured neuronal correlations, we modeled short term dynamics of L2/3 murine visual cortical neurons to evaluate the relative importance of each factor to neuronal variability within single trials. We find single trial predictions improve most when conditioning on the experimentally measured local correlations in comparison to predictions based on the stimulus or running speed. Specifically, accurate predictions are driven by positively co-varying and synchronously active functional groups of neurons. Including functional groups in the model enhances decoding accuracy of sensory information compared to a model that assumes neuronal independence. Functional groups, in encoding and decoding frameworks, provide an operational definition of Hebbian assemblies in which local correlations largely explain neuronal responses on individual trials.

Bio: Jason MacLean is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and director of undergraduate studies in neuroscience at the University of Chicago. His research aims to define how information is encoded in the brain by large groups of synaptically interconnected neurons using a range of analytical approaches.

Abstract:

In three sets of experiments involving over 3300 individuals, we show that agents motivated to be selfish or to hold egoistic beliefs make systematic errors that appear to be driven by cognitive limitations. We further show that that these errors are eliminated (or dramatically reduced) when self-serving motives are removed. Put differently, we find that individuals make “motivated errors” — they act as if they are cognitively limited, but only when it is self-serving to do so.

Developmental Brown Bag: Introducing elevation to the study of children’s developing prosociality (September 30, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65644 65644-16627846@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 30, 2019 12:00pm
Location: East Hall
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Abstract:
Social constructivism posits that helping behaviour emerges through young children’s interactions with others. This would result in a social motivation whereby children help others because they want to provide the help themselves. However, in a series of studies we find better support for an alternative explanation of children’s helping behaviour, one that emphasizes their prosocial motivation to maintain cooperative relationships with others, including their peers. To this end we studied a prosocial emotion that has thus far received little attention in the developmental literature: elevation. The central finding is that young children express positive emotions when seeing others being helped and more specifically when seeing others get the help they deserve. The pattern from a series of studies suggests that young children’s prosocial emotions are regulated not only by concern for their personal gain or by sympathy for others, but reflect an emerging sense of deservingness as determined by social comparison.

ABSTRACT: With the first drugs approved, oligonucleotides are rising to become a new, major class of therapeutic modalities on par with small molecules and biologics.
RNAi enables simple and specific modulation of gene expression when the chemical architecture supporting efficient delivery in vivo is defined. Currently, in liver, a single subcutaneous administration supports a year of clinical efficacy, changing our vision of how medicine will be practiced in the future.
The unprecedented duration of effect relies on oligonucleotide endocytosis and entrapment within endosomal/lysosomal compartments. These naturally formed, intracellular deposits provide a continuous release of compounds for RISC loading and productive silencing, supporting multi-month efficacy. Of course, this approach is dependent on extensive and complex chemical stabilization that ensures the survival of the oligonucleotides in highly aggressive biological environments.
In the context of fully stabilized compounds, we have used diverse chemical engineering to define the rules driving oligonucleotide distribution, efficacy, and toxicity. At this point, efficient modulation of gene expression in multiple extrahepatic tissues is possible (muscle, heart, fat, placenta, etc). One of our engineering efforts resulted in the identification of a di-branched chemical scaffold that enables potent and durable gene silencing in the brain and spinal cord. Using huntingtin – the causative gene in Huntington disease – as a model, we demonstrate that CNS-active RNAi induces potent protein silencing (~ 90%) in all brain regions tested in both rodents and non-human primates. Silencing persists for at least six months, with the degree of gene modulation correlating to the level of the guide strand tissue accumulation.
Demonstration of extrahepatic activity, in particular the development of a CNS-active RNAi scaffold, is opening other tissues and the brain for RNAi-based modulation of gene expression and establishing a path toward the development of new cures for genetically-defined neurodegenerative disorders.

Please join us for a screening of the Puerto Rican film Angélica (2017). Following the screening, filmmaker Marisol Gómez-Mouakad will hold a Q&A.

Synopsis:
Angelica, after a long absence from Puerto Rico, returns when
her father, Wilfredo, suffers a stroke. This forced return and her father’s illness, forces Angelica to re-evaluate her relationship with her mother, and with her family members who don’t accept her because of her skin color. All this will force her to face herself and discover that she does not know who she is. Furthermore she does not like herself. After her father’s death, Angelica must decide whether to return to the comfort of her previous life, dissatisfied, but secure, or set on an adventurous path to rediscover herself as an independent, modern, strong, mulatto, and Puerto Rican woman in a globalized world that is in the cusp of the twenty-first century.

Marisol Gómez-Mouakad is a Puerto Rican filmmaker who has a master degree in Media Studies with a concentration in Film Production at The New School. Abstract:

Restrictions on abortion are pervasive, yet relatively little is known about the effect of being denied an abortion on women who seek one while pregnant. This paper evaluates the economic consequences of being denied an abortion on the basis of gestational age of the pregnancy. Our analysis relies on new linkages to administrative data on ten years of credit reports for participants in the Turnaway Study, the first study to collect high-quality, longitudinal data on women receiving or being denied a wanted abortion. The study recruited women seeking an abortion at 30 health providers located in 21 states who fell in to one of two groups: the first group included women with pregnancies close to the facility's gestational age limit who received a wanted abortion (Near Limit Abortion Group), while the second group was women with pregnancies just over the facility's gestational age limit who were turned away without receiving an abortion (Turnaway Group). Our analysis compares differences in credit report outcomes for these two groups for 3 years prior and up to 5 years following the intended abortion using an event study design. We find that the trajectories for these outcomes are similar for the two groups of women during the pre-period. However, following their visit to the abortion provider, we find evidence of a large and persistent increase in financial distress for the women who were denied an abortion that is sustained for the 6 years following the intended abortion.

It has been twenty years since patient safety was thrust into the public and professional consciousness of healthcare. Despite the attention that has been given this complex topic in both the professional and lay press the progress towards making patient safety a real priority in healthcare has been limited. Transforming healthcare so that patient safety becomes an inherent property embedded in the very fabric of the organization requires the adoption of a variety of values, techniques, and processes that are continually  reinforced by the words and deeds of leadership at all levels. Critical elements and methods for achieving this goal will be discussed.

Dr. James P. Bagian is the Director of the Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety and is a Professor in the  Department of Anesthesiology in the Medical School and the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Previously, he served as the first Director of the VA National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS) and the first Chief Patient Safety Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs from 1999 to 2010 where he developed numerous patient safety related tools and programs that have been adopted nationally and internationally. Dr. Bagian served as a NASA astronaut and is a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and was an investigator of both the Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttle mishaps. Presently, he is applying systems engineering approaches to the analysis of medical adverse events and the development and implementation of systems-based corrective actions that will enhance patient safety primarily through preventive means. He received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from Drexel University and his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He is a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and has received numerous awards for his work in the field of patient safety and aerospace medicine.

This paper examines medieval discussions of iconography, what an image represents. It concentrates on what Dale Kinney has called narrative etiologies, that is cases where medieval viewers, provoked by an image they did not understand, invent a story that explains it. My examples include the contested reception of ruler portraits, inquiries into images in churches, and narrative elaborations on hagiographical images. These cases demonstrate that medieval viewers were quite happy to accept Pope Gregory the Great's invitation to read images as the literate read texts. For the art historian, they offer gratifying proof that images may provoke verbal narratives instead of merely depending on them.

Circulating the Avant-Garde: Aesthetic Counter-Publics in the Little Magazines, 1890-1920 (October 1, 2019 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64238 64238-16258507@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 1, 2019 8:00am

This project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s (October 1, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/58562 58562-14511276@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 1, 2019 11:00am

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s presents large-scale work by four leading American artists—Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Gilliam, Al Loving, and Louise Nevelson—who chose abstraction as a means of expression within the intense political climate of the early 1970s.

Then, participants plan and deliver a 10-minute lesson containing an active learning technique. Finally, participants reflect on their experience and exchange supportive feedback.

Participants who have attended Engineering IA or GSI Teaching Orientation will recognize the format of Active Learning Practice as similar to that of the practice teaching session held at the orientation. Although the format of this event is similar, the content (active learning techniques) is new.

Studying the proximate mechanisms of social behaviour poses unique methodological and theoretical challenges. In a series of studies, we used pupillometry to design experimental paradigms that allow us to investigate physiological changes in the context of both children’s and chimpanzees’ social interactions. We applied these methods to study the underlying motivation of both prosocial behaviour and so-called inequity aversion. In young children, we have further included measures of positive emotions using motion sensor technology. Together, our results suggest that while specific social behaviours, such as helping, are a cross-species phenomenon among Great Apes, the underlying motivation may be distinctly different between humans and chimpanzees.
