Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

How do we arrive at an understanding of truth within our courts and justice system? What constitutes witnessing in our current tech and data saturated context? Courtney McClellan, the 2019-2020 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence, will discuss Witness Lab, an installation and performance project that investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and examines the relationship between performance and law. She will be joined by an international group of science and technology studies (STS) scholars—humanists and social scientists who study the relationships between science, technology, politics, and society—for an informal conversation that explores the role of science and technology in our understanding of witnessing and the construction of standards of truth.   Following the gallery discussion, please join us for a film screening of El Panóptico Ciego (The Blind Panopticon) at 5:30 p.m. in UMMA’s Helmut Stern Auditorium.

This program is presented in partnership with the conference “Behind Walls, Beyond Discipline: Science, Technology, and the Carceral State,” co-organized by the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program and the Science, Technology, and Society Program at the University of Michigan.

Witness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

Bruno Nettl, in his 1983 magisterial conspectus The Study of Ethnomusicology: 29 Issues and Concepts, suggested that this field might best be understood as “the science of music history.” And yet it can seem that what makes ethnomusicology unique among music disciplines is its devotion to ethnographic fieldwork. So what is the role of history in this field of study? How do ethnomusicologists “do” history? Do they understand themselves as historians or ethnographers or both? Since the demise of comparative musicology in the U.S., most historical writing in ethnomusicology has been associated with particular ethnographic studies. After an examination of some classic examples of historical studies in ethnomusicology, I discuss my recent attempt to skirt the problems of “universal history,” avoided in ethnomusicology since the 1960s, in my writing of what amounts to a history of the world’s music.

In August of 2014 a film crew stumbled across a century-old bureaucratic archive of the main men’s prison in Quito, Ecuador.  Roof-high stacks of paperwork crammed into a nineteenth-century vault. This decaying archive recorded the daily institutional life of Ecuador’s oldest penitentiary, Centro de Rehabiltacion de Varones, Numero Uno Quito (CRSVQ1); originally titled Penal Garcia Moreno after the President who oversaw its construction between 1869 and 1874. El Panóptico Ciego (Blind Panopticon) documents an extensive array of official records hoarded during 139 years of prison functioning, countless everyday items left behind by prisoners transferred without notice also became part of this archive, and the prison itself came to constitute an archive of events inscribed on its walls.   2015. 52 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. Director: Mateo Herrera; scriptwriter and ethnography: Jorge Núñez; photography: Simón Brauer; producer: Nathalie Moller; and subtitles: Jennifer Fleetwood.     Followed by a Q&A with Jorge Nuñez.

a play by Chay Yew
Directed by Matthew Ozawa

Using dance, drag, drama, and documentary elements, A Beautiful Country chronicles 150 years of Asian-American immigration history. Miss Visa Denied, a drag queen and performer, is the narrator who guides the audience through the turbulent history of Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese people coming to America. Heartfelt testimonials and the dramatization of some highly vibrant and egregious pieces of propaganda showcase the provocative events that have shaped this history. Addressing issues of race, gender, and appropriation, this play examines the fundamental questions surrounding the immigrant experience, including what it means to be an American.

CANCELLED - Cedric Burnside (April 10, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72016 72016-17914155@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 10, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Cedric Burnside needs to cancel the April 10th performance and looks forward to returning to The Ark later this year to follow up on an incredible performance at Folk Fest. All ticket holders will receive a refund.

"My school was a juke joint, from a kid till I was grown, and blues is really all I ever known," sings Cedric Burnside on his new album, "Benton County Relic." And it's no wonder. The 39-year-old, though he's just back from a European tour, still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs, Mississippi, home where he was raised by "Big Daddy," his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside, whom Cedric famously played with, just as his own father, drummer Calvin Jackson, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues, more specifically, the rhythmically unorthodox Hill country variant that emerged from Mississippi, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough, Jessie May Hemphill, and Otha Turner, as well as Delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul "Wine" Jones. Cedric has played and recorded with the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson gave him his first electric guitar), Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears ,and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But beyond that, he writes from personal experience, and he's bringing traditional blues to a new generation.

Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale, California, the duo offers breathtaking harmonies and a heartfelt sound that they dub cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. We make music that’s reflective of the landscape we grew up with in southern California,” says Clay. "It’s a big sweep of all the really rich influences you encounter around here: folk and psychedelic and country and Latin and rock and cowboy and Hawaiian. We’re drawing from a really deep well." Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them. Mapache comes to Michigan with a brand new release, "From Liberty Street."

Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

On April 22, 2020, our world celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual event meant to bring people together from across the world in protest, solidarity, and conversation about how we can collectively fight for a sustainable and just world. In this Teach-Out, you will explore the origins of Earth Day 1970 with student activists from Environmental Action for Survival (ENACT), an environmental student group from the University of Michigan, whose efforts led to a massive “Teach-In on the Environment” which drew tens of thousands of people. This was just one of many teach-in events that took place in 1970 and kicked-off Earth Day as we know it.

50 years later, you are invited to this “Teach-Out” to engage in an intergenerational and interdisciplinary conversion about what sustainability means across different sectors, disciplines, and lived experiences. You will explore themes including global sustainability efforts, climate change, environmental justice, and more, to inspire you to take action on Earth Day and beyond. Together, we will collectively develop visions for a sustainable, just, and peaceful world.

Established in 1923 through the generosity of U-M Regent William L. Clements, the Clements Library is a treasure house of American history. It collects, preserves, and makes available primary sources about the Americas, with particular strengths in 18th and 19th century Americana. Drawing upon all four divisions of materials – books, manuscripts, maps and graphics – this display presents a small sampling of reproductions of the internationally significant holdings at the Clements and illustrates some topical strengths of the collections. Selections include handsome original artwork, compelling manuscripts, and printed resources with geographical connections spanning from the Caribbean to the Great Lakes.

Birds first flew onto Ellie Harold's canvases in 2016, appearing to her as intuitive messengers of hope and healing for troubled times. She paints intuitively to music, spontaneously, with no plan in mind and with as little thought as possible. She sees the first marks of black calligraphy as the hint of a language revealing bird wisdom hidden beneath successive layers of color. She paints the white layer last, unifying all of the elements in the painting. Harold uses not only a brush, but also fingers, squeegee and oil sticks to capture the fleeting nature of birds. An ordained Unity minister, Harold aims for this series to inspire the discovery of inner solutions to difficult issues that have so far eluded resolution by ordinary means.

Anne Mondro is an artist and a professor in the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In this body of work, she reflects on how time spent in nature has inspired new personal discoveries and intellectual curiosity, while serving as a positive distraction from recent experiences with grief and sadness. Drawing from these insights, Mondro crocheted and stitched fine wire to create intricate woven sculptures reminiscent of seeds, pods and other organic forms. Focusing on the wonderfully complex construction of these forms, Mondro mimics nature’s ability to be structurally strong while delicate in appearance to invite deeper exploration.

Jaye Schlesinger is a full time painter living and working in Ann Arbor. Her work includes realist oil paintings of common everyday objects and abstracted subjects portrayed in gouache (opaque watercolor) on paper. This recent body of work evolved from years of photographing rooftops, playgrounds, houses and aerial views, and digitally manipulating them to create colorful and quirky compositions. The scenes are not intended to be specific locales, but rather to celebrate the color, shape, rhythm and structure found in our daily environment. Gouache is a medium which requires slow and careful application and reflects the artist’s view of painting as a meditative pursuit.

Migration has profoundly affected the life and perspective of the Michigan-based fiber artist, Martina Celerin. Celerin’s family emigrated from Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1968 as political refugees escaping Soviet rule. Both a molecular geneticist and artist, her artistic medium is a sophisticated blend of highly dimensional weaving, crochet, needle felting, and other fiber-based techniques that incorporates everyday reclaimed and recycled materials to help tell a story. The pieces on exhibit are drawn from a larger body of work that translates the extraordinary challenges of modern-day human migration and notes the parallel phenomena in animals.

Although Candace Compton Pappas is recognized primarily as a painter, this series of constructed homes and vessels represents an important facet of her life as an artist. Over the years, she has collected, saved, garbage-rescued, and gathered objects that capture her attention. A firm believer that there is no such thing as garbage, and a great observer of nature’s cycle of creating and breaking down, she has constructed numerous cement vessels to hold all these objects that proliferate the studio. These finds, the vessels that hold them, and the totems that pay tribute to them, all keep her company, inspire her, and keep her calm in her temple-like studio in the woods outside of Chelsea, Michigan.

Through this exhibit, we invite you to explore more than two centuries of diaries and diary-like documents from across the holdings of the Special Collections Research Center, ranging from privately emotive to publicly informative, from offering news reportage to depicting emotional processing, and from factual to purely fictional. As you read, consider how these journals embody elements of both private and public writing and the permeability between those spheres.

Diaries, journals, daily planners, notebooks: these ephemeral writings provide documentation of private lives and thoughts that can otherwise be difficult to find in the historical record. But does “private” necessarily imply unfiltered and unmediated? Many theorists have noted that the diarist is both writer and reader, both private and public self. Therefore the content and form of diaries are created for future reading, even if only by a future version of the self. The ambiguity of a diary’s audience is heightened in the case of published diaries. The form suggests that we, as readers, are accessing raw, unfiltered thoughts, but rounds of revision are common, and often essential to clearly convey the intended meaning. Even further from our notions of authentic, private writing, fictional diaries are written solely to be published and read by the public, but use the diary form to draw the reader into a particular relationship with the text and its protagonist.

Students and faculty are invited to attend the 10th anniversary Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, 2020, at the U-M Michigan League.

Hosted by the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science, the Weinberg Symposium features presentations, posters, and discussion centered on the theme: “The Cognitive Science of Concepts: Contrasting Perspectives Across the Disciplines.” Concepts--mental representations that underpin thought and reasoning--are understood and investigated in different ways across cognitive science's sub-disciplines, for example in developmental psychology, the study of animal cognition, and the study of artificial minds / artificial intelligence (AI).

A keynote lecture, “Do Apes Believe? The Concept of 'Belief' in Great Apes and Human Children,” by Michael Tomasello (Duke University) kicks off the two-day symposium on Friday, April 10. The lecture will be followed by a poster session and reception.

The second day of the symposium, Saturday, April 11, will feature a range of contrasting and potentially complementary perspectives on concepts by leading scholars in several disciplines. Guest speakers include Marjorie Rhodes (New York University), Sandra Waxman (Northwestern University), Surya Ganguli (Stanford University), and Michael Strevens (New York University).

Saturday’s activities will also feature a panel discussion with U-M faculty, and ample time for participant and student interaction.

Please visit the 2020 Weinberg Symposium webpage to see the full agenda including speakers, presentation titles, and registration details.

CANCELLED - Eleventh Annual International Graduate Student Workshop | Medicine, Madness, and Maladies of the Mind in Armenian Studies Past and Present (April 11, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68934 68934-18079376@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 11, 2020 10:00am
Location:
Organized By: Center for Armenian Studies

Unfortunately, and due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has been cancelled.

In recent years, the history of medicine, mental illness, and the literary, anthropological, and sociological studies of madness have gained a remarkable momentum internationally. Still, there have been virtually no substantial studies of a premodern and modern understanding of medicine, madness, and maladies of the mind in Armenia and its Diaspora. This interdisciplinary workshop aims to interrogate the stories of both medical and psychiatric sciences as well as that of the concept of madness in Armenian political, historical, literary, and cultural discussions in the past and present.

The workshop will focus on the histories of medicine and psychiatry and the portrayals of madness as a form of behavior, marker of difference, and tool of body politics across periods and geographies. The workshop organizers are interested in the broader history of medicine, but they would like to draw particular attention to the historical and contemporary landscapes in which medical professionals sought to exercise their authorities over mental illnesses and the mind itself. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, tools and theories have provided medical professionals with renewed opportunities to intervene in the social, political and cultural spheres with the shared objective of devising and implementing therapies of madness.

In this, the workshop will initiate an inter-disciplinary conversation about the concept, diagnosis, treatment, and social construction of “madness.” The goal is to consider new perspectives, methodologies and cross-disciplinary frameworks that will put Armenian Studies in conversation with, among others, the growing fields of history of medicine, science and technology studies. In the course of the workshop, the hope is to call into question what was and is culturally defined as madness as well as medical and societal interventions to “cure” madness and “contain” the mad.

Therefore, this meeting will situate the notion of madness at the intersection of politics, medicine, literature, sociology, and anthropology and seeks to explore the changes in its definition and the underpinnings of perceptions of mental illnesses at critical junctures of history in Armenia and amongst its diasporic communities across the globe.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

The notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism in the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 70s. Kaleidoscope, UMMA’s third and final edition of this exhibition series, examines the constantly changing practices of local Detroit artists, women artists, and artists of color as they actively embraced abstraction’s possibilities. Their strategies dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in a shifting American political landscape.

It exchanges Alumni Memorial Hall's previous focus on European and American painting for a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media, sampling the Museum's remarkable, disparate holdings. The installation is organized into thematic and formal vignettes that respond to the concepts and ideas resonating from an extraordinary large-scale photograph of a vacant cathedral by contemporary German artist Candida Höfer. Featuring works of art by numerous famous and not-so-famous artists, many of them artists of color and women—including Charles Alston, Christo, Theaster Gates, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, and others, Collection Ensemble reimagines the collection not as a fixed entity with one set of meanings to be unearthed, but instead as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation.

This expansive look at the work and concerns of emerging contemporary artist Cullen Washington, Jr. pivots around the artist’s most recent series, Agoras. The compositions explore the ancient Greek public space as a site for activated assembly and the heart of the artistic, spiritual, and political life of the city. UMMA’s installation is designed with an actual public square at its center, complete with sound components featuring noted political and aesthetic discourse and surrounded by Washington’s soaring monumental collages. Works from four earlier series by the artist form the perimeter of the Museum’s largest special exhibition space. The artist describes his work as “abstract meditations on the grid and humanity.”

UMMA’s second exhibition of Inuit art derived from the Power Family’s generous promised gift to the Museum in 2018 explores the relationship between the artist and the representation of everyday experiences. Through a selection of mid-century to contemporary Inuit prints, drawings, and sculptures that portray seemingly ordinary reflections of daily life along with daydreaming meditations, the exhibition bridges the mundane and the fantastic. Together, these artworks present a distinct imagery and a visual poetry culled from the day-to-day reality of life in the far polar north. The perspectives range from soaring gazes at the horizon to glimpses of commonplace social interactions. These contemplations reveal intimate connections among the artists, their communities, and their locale—a specific place and time composed of icy regions and vast seas and tundras. Reflections: An Ordinary Day takes visitors on a lyrical journey of the myriad spaces and routines within an Arctic landscape.

Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Designed as a courtroom installation and a performance series by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan, Witness Lab frames witnessing as a social and artistic act. The gallery collapses courtroom, theater, classroom, laboratory, and artist studio in order to study the relationship between performance and law. In hosting mock trials, court transcript readings, and trial advocacy workshops, the artist investigates who performs the role of witness in our society and how that understanding may map onto the narrower legal definition of the role. The installation will host legal simulations from participating groups, including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Taking the role of courtroom sketch artists, or court reporters, students from the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design will observe and document the courtroom performances through drawing, text, photography, and video.

Witness Lab is presented in partnership with the Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Program of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, with lead support provided by the University of Michigan Law School and Office of the Provost.

a play by Chay Yew

In 20 years since his full-length solo debut, One Left Shoe, Steve Poltz blessed the world’s ears with thirteen solo records, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently, Shine On, in 2019. NPR summed it up best, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.”

Evoking themes of “hope, love, contemplation, celebration of Wednesday, pharmacists, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges everyone to, “Shine on, shine on.”

Dear Stranger: Diaries for the Private and Public Self (April 12, 2020 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/70075 70075-17507829@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 12, 2020 8:30am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (April 12, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207436@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 12, 2020 12:00pm

Support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment, the Susan and Richard Gutow Endowed Fund, and the Robert and Janet Miller Fund

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by Erica Gervais Pappendick and Ted Pappendick, Candy and Michael Barasch, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Institute for the Humanities.

This exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

Write-Togethers will be running remotely every Monday on BlueJeans. The primary objective of the Write-Together—to provide a supportive community environment where you can make progress on larger writing projects—does not change in the move from in-person to remote. As we start redefining what our daily lives look like, having a virtual community in place to hold yourself accountable to your larger writing goals can be a potentially anchoring structure. If you are able to join us, we will look forward to touching base with you about your writing goals, and holding space for writing assistance as needed.
You can join the BlueJeans meeting by clicking on the link below, or dialing in by phone. This is set up to be a chat-only meeting, so that we don’t overtax the server, though we may enable cameras at later meetings if participants prefer it.

Self-massage is a safe, therapeutic hands-on approach to self-care that everybody can benefit from. Due to the intensity of our work, our muscles tend to be overused or misused. In this workshop, we will be focusing on releasing tension in the neck, upper shoulders, feet, and calves. You will need a mat, or a chair, loose attire, and curiosity of how the body will feel before and after.

This study group will read and discuss short stories by six writers from the past whose works are still today significant and powerful. As well as discussing the achievement of each story, we will also be using these works to develop some broad ideas about the art of fiction and the experience of reading fiction. The six authors we will be studying are Nicolai Gogol; Anton Chekhov; D.H. Lawrence; Katherine Mansfield; Katherine Ann Porter; and Isaac Bashevis Singer. All of the stories are available on the internet or in inexpensive editions that can be purchased from Amazon. Members of the class are asked to read, for the first meeting, Gogol’s The Nose and The Overcoat at the following two links respectively:

Encores are traditionally the “dessert” of a concert, called upon after a meaty program of sonatas and savorier repertoire. Sometimes they are whimsical little things, charming and sweet, other times full of fire, flash, and virtuosity. Violinists from the studio of Danielle Belen join with pianists from SMTD to perform works in this genre from around the world.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the 60s and 70s: Kaleidoscope (April 14, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68986 68986-17207437@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 14, 2020 11:00am

Collection Ensemble presents the first major reinstallation of UMMA's iconic entry space in over a decade.

Reflections: An Ordinary Day (April 14, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68062 68062-16988335@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 14, 2020 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

This exhibition is made possible by the Power Family Program for Inuit Art, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

Abstract:

The nucleus accumbens shell (NAc) and the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) are robust generators of intense reward-related motivation. Both structures contain two distinct populations of neurons that respectively have either D1-type receptors for dopamine or D2-type of receptors. I sought to examine the reward roles of D1 versus D2 neuron populations in NAc shell and in CeA, by comparing optogenetic self-stimulation as laser excitation of either D1 neuron or D2 neurons in each structure (using D1-Cre and A2A/D2-Cre rats developed by Ferrario/Berke labs). My results suggest a strong role of D1 neurons in reward motivation in both NAc and CeA. My results also suggest at least moderate reward roles for D2 neurons, especially in CeA but also to some extent in NAc shell (at least under certain conditions).

[POSTPONED] Beautiful Justice: The Aesthetics of Oppression and Freedom (April 14, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72573 72573-18018167@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 14, 2020 1:00pm
Location: School of Education

What role does aesthetics play in the struggle for social justice? Aesthetic judgments saturate our interactions with media, from billion-dollar advertising campaigns to texts from ancient philosophy. However, aesthetics also play a crucial role in our lived experience of oppression and freedom. From the racist claims for white beauty as superior genetics to the liberating music inspirations of reggae, hip-hop, and soul, the aesthetic dimensions of struggles for social justice, and the hidden politics behind aesthetic perceptions, have received little attention. This presentation revisits the historical and cross-disciplinary conversations around aesthetics as beauty through form and function and introduces beautiful justice, a design framework that aims to extend the discussion to include justice.

Public programs, classes, and mock trial performances investigate who plays the role of the witness in our society, and help us to understand truth within our legal system.

In her investigation of America’s courts, McClellan’s practice engages K-12 and university classes across a spectrum of disciplines including law, drama, and anthropology, among others.

Due to the nature of the project, the schedule for all Witness Lab events and simulations are subject to change without notice and changes may not always be reflected in online listings.

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is an emerging biomedical imaging modality that combines optical and ultrasound imaging technologies. PA imaging relies on the absorption of electromagnetic energy (usually in the form of visible or near-infrared light) leading to the generation of acoustic waves by thermoelastic expansion, which can be detected with an ultrasound detector. PA imaging can be used to detect endogenous chromophores such as deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin, or can be used together with external nanosensors for added functionality. The former is used to measure things like blood oxygenation, while the latter opens up many possibilities for PA imaging, limited only to the availability of optical nanosensors. In this dissertation, I employ the use of PA nanosensors for contrast enhancement and molecular imaging in in vivo small animal cancer models.

In the first section, I introduce a novel PA background reduction technique called the transient triplet differential (TTD) method. The TTD method exploits the fact that phosphorescent dyes possess a triplet state with a unique red-shifted absorption wavelength, distinct from its ordinary singlet state absorption profile. By pumping these dyes into the triplet state and comparing the signal to the unpumped dyes, a differential signal can be obtained which solely originates from these dyes. Since intrinsic chromophores of biological tissue are not able to undergo intersystem crossing and enter the triplet state, the TTD method can facilitate “true” background free molecular imaging by excluding the signals from every other chromophore outside the phosphorescent dye. Here, I demonstrate up to an order of magnitude better sensitivity of the TTD method compared to other existing contrast enhancement techniques in both in vitro experiments and in vivo cancer models.

In the second section, I explore the use of a nanoparticle formulation of a repurposed FDA-approved drug called clofazimine for diagnosis of prostate cancer. Clofazimine nanoparticles have a high optical absorbance at 495 nm and has been known to specifically accumulate in macrophages as they form stable crystal-like inclusions once they are uptaken by macrophages. Due to the presence of tumor associated macrophages, it is expected that clofazimine would accumulate in much higher quantities in the cancerous prostate compared to normal prostates. Here, I show that there was indeed a significantly higher accumulation of clofazimine nanoparticles in cancerous prostates compared to normal prostates in a transgenic mouse model, which was detectable both using histology and ex vivo PA imaging.

In the third and final section, I explore the use of a potassium (K+) nanosensor together with PA imaging in measuring the in vivo K+ distribution in the tumor microenvironment (TME). K+ is the most abundant ion in the body and has recently been shown to be at a significantly higher concentration in the tumor. The reported 5-10 fold elevation (25-50 mM compared to 5 mM) in the tumor has been shown to inhibit immune cell efficacy, and thus immunotherapy. Despite the abundance and importance of K+ in the body, few ways exist to measure it in vivo. In this study, a solvatochromic dye K+ nanoparticle (SDKNP) was used together with PA imaging to quantitatively measure the in vivo distribution of K+ in the TME. Significantly elevated K+ levels were found in the TME, with an average concentration of approximately 29 mM, matching the values found by the previous study. The results were then verified using mass spectrometry.

Government leaders are finding it more and more difficult to secure the funding necessary to maintain services for their constituents. This situation has led them to turn to historically untoward means of boosting revenues such as casinos, sports betting, and marijuana. Many believe allowing and taxing such activity will help communities bridge the gaps in their budgets, while others question the negative impacts on society. Join us as we weigh the social and financial impacts of Taxing Vice in our communities.

Organized By: UKirk@UMich

Join us for a monthly Taizé Prayer Service with First Pres Ann Arbor, now held virtually.

What is a Taizé Service?

This style of worship was developed at Taizé, a monastic community located in Taizé, France, founded in the 1940’s by a Swiss named Roger Louis Schütz-Marsauche or Brother Roger. The “brothers” of the community have taken a vow of celibacy and are committed to a lifetime of simplicity, service, and community. There is an ecumenical emphasis at Taizé, which says the community “wants its life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples.”

A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. There is no preaching. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”

Taizé Services have been a practice of worshipping here at First Pres on Ash Wednesday. All are welcome!

The John Jorgenson Band, or J2B2 for short, is a bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians—John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen (The Dillards, Desert Rose Band) on banjo, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder) on bass; and Patrick Sauber ("A Mighty Wind") on acoustic guitar and vocals—delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band's high-powered live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock), and seasoned showmanship. This is the "high lonesome sound" of American roots music at its finest.

Location: Off Campus Location
