Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

The Thunder Bay Folk Festival is a weekend event held at the Alpena Antique Tractor Showgrounds located at 6850 French Rd, Alpena, Michigan.

This is truly a family-friendly event with something for everyone. We have Musicians jamming in the jam tent, or around their campsites on Friday and Live Music on Saturday.

Our goal is to put on a first-class music festival right here in NE Michigan. We book popular bands from around the state and occasionally have artists from as far away as Chicago. Another goal was to provide a venue for our many, many talented musicians close by to perform, and with that in mind, we always have a fine selection of these local artists.

Musical genres range from 60’s folk/rock, bluegrass, country, faux-grass, blues, and always great dance tunes. Don’t let the title “folk” confuse you. We feel that folk music encompasses all these genres and more!

Edgefest: Steve Swell’s If Trains Could Speak (October 30, 2021 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88741 88741-21657249@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, October 30, 2021 7:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Judaic Studies

This is currently scheduled as the final set of the Grand Finale Evening of Edgefest at the Bethlehem United Church of Christ on 4th Ave. on Saturday evening (Oct. 30). The full program begins at 7 pm. All attendees must be fully vaccinated and wear a mask. Steve Swell is one of the finest composers/improvisers on the New York downtown scene and is internationally acclaimed for his trombone playing. He has performed regularly in Europe, often in Poland, where he has established important connections with local musicians. On one of his many trips to Kraków he decided to visit Auschwitz:

“The first time I tried to visit Auschwitz in 2007, there was no train. They had changed the track of the train that regularly departed for there. They announced the track change in Polish but not in English. There were about two very angry people yelling and screaming at the ticket sellers and railroad staff as to this oversight. Can you imagine, people yelling that they missed the train to Auschwitz and that it had ruined their day?”

Later he wrote: If “Trains Could Speak” is inspired by that ninety-minute train ride from Krakow to Auschwitz concentration camp. The ride itself is through some very beautiful, peaceful countryside and farmland in southeast Poland. The incongruity of my ride and the ride of those whose trip seventy years before was one of uncertainty and hopelessness prompted a multitude of thoughts and feelings as the train progressed to its destination. The journey and visit to the camp itself sparked a deeper understanding of the horrors that humans are capable of and
its juxtaposition to our ability to be brilliant, creative, and tolerant. Delving into the choice we have in either surrendering to our baser instincts or to transcend them, feeds my own lifelong curiosity of what it means to be alive, and to know that life is fragile, dangerous, and magnificent all at the same time.

In addition to the composer on trombone, the performance will feature Deanna Relyea, mezzo soprano, Jason Kao Hwang, violin, viola, Piotr Michalowski, bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, Steve Rush, piano, Ken Filiano, bass, and Michael TA Thompson, percussion.

All attendees must be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

The 2022 LSA Internship Fair is an LSA-exclusive event hosted by the LSA Opportunity Hub. This annual event is designed to support LSA students who are navigating the internship search process and equips students like yourself with access to employers so you can unlock your next internship opportunity.

*Due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 and a concern for student safety, the planning team for the LSA Internship Fair has decided to change the previously hybrid 2-day Internship Fair to only be conducted virtually via Career Fair (+) on February 15, 12 - 4 pm EST.*

On Tuesday, February 15 from 12:00-4:00 p.m., LSA students can access the event via Career Fair+, a virtual career fair platform that’s conveniently accessible via a smartphone or laptop.

Attend this one-stop internship-focused event to answer the questions like: “How do I get an internship?” “How do I maximize my experience?” And, “How do I leverage my experience towards my academic and career goals?” Regardless of where you are in your undergraduate journey—whether you’re a first or second-year student exploring your career interests or a third-year student looking to expand your professional experience— the LSA Internship Fair has something for you.

You should attend this event if you are:
-An LSA undergrad
-Actively searching for internship opportunities
-Interested in learning more about the transformative work experiences that could be had through a Hub employer partner

By attending the event, you’ll be able to:
-Get helpful insights and learnings from Hub employer partners on how to launch your internship search and secure a work experience this spring or summer.
-Connect with companies via scheduled virtual 1:1 appointments about their active internship roles and other career opportunities. These employers hail from wide-ranging industries and they include organizations like AmeriCorps, CityYear, Forbes House Museum, and many other employers.
-Make valuable connections with employer representatives and recruiters who strongly believe in the liberal arts and sciences education, are eager to hire LSA students, and will be offering post-event interviews after the fair.
-Learn how you can use your LSA degree to enter any industry or career path from social impact, business, media, environmental sustainability, data & tech, to public health and healthcare.

By registering prior to the event, you’ll be able to:
-Gain access the Hub’s suite of career learning tools on Canvas to prepare for the fair by learning how to refine your résume, prepare questions for employers, build an elevator pitch, and more
-Get guidance on how to search, land, and maximize an internship experience by scheduling a virtual coaching appointment or accessing drop-in coaching with a Hub coach
-Attend the Hub’s upcoming January workshops for practical and relevant preparation including: career fair prep, internship search and prep, and the essentials of networking

Interaction Level: High

RSVP NOW to get timely updates about confirmed employer presenters. You must RSVP for this virtual event in order to complete the final step of registering for the Career Fair+ platform. Look out for an email within one business day.

The LSA Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. To request accommodations please contact Anna Colvin at ancolvin@umich.edu so we can make arrangements.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

If you’re thinking about or know you want to apply to grad school, you might be wondering what makes a competitive candidate and what to expect before, during, and after the application process. The annual LSA Graduate School Fair is a great way to learn more about nationwide graduate school programs, including top ranked programs at our very own U-M! By attending, you can gain clarity on the different application timelines and requirements but more importantly this one stop-shop event brings together graduate program representatives from across the country so you can meet with them one-on-one. This is a prime opportunity to get the insights and knowledge you need to develop an action plan towards admission to a grad program that fits your learning and career goals.

The LSA Graduate School Fair will be hosted virtually by the LSA Opportunity Hub on March 9 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Read on to find out the schools and programs that will be present at the fair — and RSVP so you can get all the updates ahead of the event, including access to sign up for virtual sessions with the graduate school representatives on your list.
Navigating the Graduate School Fair

This year, our Grad School Fair will be held virtually through Career Fair+, a virtual career fair platform, accessible on a smartphone or laptop! Register in advance for small group conversations with grad program representatives!

In order to make the most out of the event, you’ll have access to a Canvas module full of resources and content to help you prepare for the fair four weeks in advance. We’ve also added a Black Graduate Student panel the evening before so that you can hear from current, or recently graduated students about their respective experiences. Lastly on the Friday after the event, attend our Graduate School Funding Webinar with the Office of Financial Aid and the Rackham Graduate School Finance and Fellowships Office, to find out your funding options — so you can make your graduate schooling plans a reality! We encourage you to attend all three events to maximize your experience and attain the knowledge you need.

You should attend this event if you are:
-A liberal arts and/or sciences student
-Interested in learning more about graduate school (application process, admission strategies, what programs to consider)

By attending, you will:
-Discover the diverse set of options out there for both graduate schools and degree programs in the US and abroad
-Gain knowledge and clarity on your post-graduate plans
-Connect with representatives from graduate or professional schools in Business, Education, Engineering, Health and Human Sciences, Liberal Arts, Mathematics, Nursing, Science, Technology, Social Work, and more!
