MEC’s mission is to provide an interdisciplinary forum to discuss the topic of energy from scientific, political, and economic perspectives. We do this through member-led energy discussions, seminars, collaboration with other clubs, projects, and more. MEC is a great resource for students to learn more about the energy industry and to create connections. MEC is open to all students, and meetings for Winter/Spring 2019 are held on Tuesdays from 6 PM-7 PM in room 2000A at the MMPL (Energy Institute) at 2301 Bonisteel Boulevard.

UMAC is offered once a week, Wednesday, for four-week sessions. The cost is $140 for the month (includes 4 weekly sessions). The meeting is facilitated by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist who prepares activities for groups of varying sizes and skill levels. Activities target all aspects of communication, including speaking, listening, and comprehending. You will practice speaking and interacting in a supportive and friendly environment, and learn new techniques to take home after the program ends!

You can fill out the UMAC online application. If you have additional questions, please call (734) 764-8440.

This group is open to those of all communication skill levels. Aphasia can be incredibly isolating and takes a toll on confidence — this group takes aim at making connections and building confidence in speech and social interactions.

To do this, we partner with a local governmental or non-profit organization for the year to learn about a specific concern and spread awareness about it within Washtenaw County. This year we are looking to partner with Shelter Association of Washtenaw County. CURIS members collaborate in teams to assess the issue, do research, and create practical solutions which we present to our partner at the end of the year. Our collaborative work and dedication to promoting community with various social events creates a close knit and welcoming environment. Joining CURIS is a great way to make new friends, all while learning more about relevant public health concerns and making an impact locally. The U-M Aphasia Community Group (UMAC) is a great way to meet people in the aphasia community, while boosting communication skills and confidence! If you or your loved one has the communication disorder aphasia, consider joining the conversation group. All ages are welcome.

CURIS - Public Health Advocacy is a student organization open to all U of M students (undergraduate, graduate, any major, any discipline). We work to address a local public health issue by partnering with an organization in the Ann Arbor/Washtenaw County already partnering with the local people. They present current problems that they have and we take one problem and study it for the year to come up with ideas for solutions. This can look like research, writing up policy briefs, writing bills, prepping a presentation, etc. We also try to advocate for the certain public health issue that the organization supports at the U of M campus with health education. This year we are looking to partner with Shelter Association of Washtenaw County. We may look into the prevention of homelessness, housing scarcity, affordability, stigma, etc. We will also participate in the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week on U of M campus. If you are interested in joining and/or learning more feel free to stop by our General Open Meeting. Here we will share more about our organization, the recruiting process, and stimulate what a general meeting may look like.

Last fall, U-M Provost Martin A. Philbert convened a Blue Ribbon Panel to offer recommendations on the question: “What ought to be the intersection between political thought/ideology and a faculty member’s responsibility to students?” The panel submitted their report to Provost Philbert in March 2019, which included a Statement of Principal (p. 9) among its recommendations.
The purpose of this town hall meeting is to gather reactions to the principles articulated in the report as well as input on how these principles can best be operationalized. The event will begin with an overview of the report, followed by table discussions led by graduate student peer facilitators.
Rackham seeks extensive student perspectives and contributions on this important topic. Students who are unable to attend the town hall are invited to submit anonymous, confidential feedback through the following link: https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bBdnASte2slsGjz.
Registration required at https://myumi.ch/2DB1B.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time (one week preferred) to arrange for your requested accommodation(s) or an effective alternative.

The Dead Pizza Society Is A Go!
If you're new here, welcome! You're getting this email because at some point you expressed interest on Maize Pages or at some tabling event, or perhaps reached out to me directly via email. If you've been around, welcome back! You're getting this because you haven't told us to stop.

Some of you questioned us for our silence, but we prefer the term suspense. Hopefully you all feel adequately suspended now, because it's time to kick off the Dead Pizza Society! Join us for our first meeting to get a feel for the club! We'll be on the Diag to kick off at our new start time, Monday 9/16 at 7pm! As always, come for the FREE PIZZA, stay for the deep questions and diverse answers. Our aim is to feed students and help them interact with people different from themselves on questions we rarely bring up in daily conversation, and of course to "sieze the day" in the process (that's from our namesake Dead Poets Society, for those wondering). Remember, this meeting is on the Diag and at 7pm.

Dear IWG members,

We're cancelling the next IWG meeting scheduled for March 20th, in light of the public health guidelines and care for your wellbeing.

Please let me or Silan Fadlallah <silanf@umich.edu> know if you have any questions. Stay safe and take good care of yourself.

kind regards,
Samer Ali

--------------------
The Islamophobia Working Group (IWG) was assembled in January 2016 to address the national crisis of Islamophobia and its impact on our campus community. We—a group of faculty, staff, and students -- have become actively involved in the University’s strategic plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and gained visibility across the university. For over two years, the IWG was run through the Arab and Muslim American Studies Program in American Culture; starting in Winter 2019, the IWG is led by CMENAS housed in the International Institute. Our work is driven by issues brought to the group by any student, staff, or faculty member. The group strategizes as a collective to figure out the best approach to a given issue. Thus, if you encounter a pertinent issue, we want to know about it and we welcome your participation in the group. If you would like to join our email list or come to a meeting, please contact Professor Samer Ali (samerali@umich.edu).
---

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event, please reach out to us at least 2 weeks in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange. Contact (email or phone): Samer Ali, samerali@umich.edu

We're cancelling the next IWG meeting scheduled for March 20th, in light of the public health guidelines and care for your wellbeing.

Please let me or Silan Fadlallah <silanf@umich.edu> know if you have any questions. Stay safe and take good care of yourself.

BLI GLOBAL ACCESS OPPORTUNITY: Mindful Peace Leadership Experience in Japan (November 6, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69105 69105-17244695@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 6, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall

Central to peace leadership is a desire for inclusion and cohesion whereby individuals are enabled to live in liberty to their fullest potential, free from the oppression of powers who seek to wield dominance. Peace leadership, therefore, is focused on creating a positive peace, while including essential elements working against forces for violence and aggression, or negative peace (Galtung, 3).

A select group of 6-8 students will join BLI Director and Mindful Leadership Researcher Ram Mahalingam and BLI Academic Program Specialist and Mindful Cohort program manager, Elizabeth Rohr, on a 3-week, immersive peace leadership journey in Japan. Students will observe and learn about peace studies, mindfulness and contemplative practices with a focus on Japanese aesthetics to help build their leadership portfolio and promote peace, dignity, and sustainability in their personal, social and workplace domains.

Doctor Susan Montgomery has had an important role in mentoring and advising students and student organizations throughout her career. She joined the University of Michigan in 1993 after a two-year postdoc developing educational modules following her PhD from Princeton University. She has taught many courses over the years including ‘Teaching Engineering’ which molds future engineering faculty. She has served as an advisor for undergraduate chemical engineering students, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and Habitat for Humanity. Recently she received the “Achievement Award” at the Willie Hobbs Moore Luncheon, given to an individual in STEM whose achievements encourage and inspire others to achieve their goals. She is in the process of transitioning to phased retirement, and certainly her contributions to our organization and our community at the University of Michigan will be forever remembered.

All are welcome!

Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Heidi Kumao gives a 30-minute talk followed by Q & A.

The power of animation and figurative (robotic, mechanical) art lies in their accessibility to the general public. Animation and tabletop puppet tableaus are viewed as approachable, non-threatening art forms associated with children. Audiences are often more receptive to content delivered in these forms, and this expectation provides artists with the perfect foil to communicate politically relevant, psychologically complex, and feminist narratives. This talk will focus on creative art projects that translate the intangible cognitive processes underlying ordinary human interactions into accessible and poetic visual narratives. These robotic and mechanical sculptures, experimental animations, and installations give physical form to emotion, memory, and relationship dynamics while challenging viewers to rethink the vocabulary used to tell these personal stories. The use of hybrid media art forms and a research-based art practice are integral to the art process that will also be discussed.

Our aim is to provide faculty, students, and staff with a better understanding that well-being and academic performance are interdependent and dynamic.
We ask graduate students to join us for a town hall discussion. Please RSVP ahead of time, even if you are unable to attend. The registration form asks you to share your input and will help to inform the future of the task force’s work.

The U-M Aphasia Community Group (UMAC) is a great way to meet people in the aphasia community, while boosting communication skills and confidence! If you or your loved one has the communication disorder aphasia, consider joining the conversation group. All ages are welcome.
