A haggis is a tasty Scottish dish consisting of sheep heart, liver, and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet, and spices, and then boiled inside the sheep's stomach. The Canadian-Scots band Enter the Haggis (bagpiper Craig Downie is from Scotland) has just about as much variety in their style, a high-speed collision of Celtic music, rock, bluegrass, funk, and world music. An Enter the Haggis live show is a musical feast—dynamic and emotionally uplifting. Alternating between upbeat rock numbers with sing-along choruses and slower, more introspective alt pop songs, the band plays progressive and lyrically driven music that’s strongly rooted in Celtic tradition—from the storytelling to the bagpipes. Enter the Haggis returns to The Ark with an as-yet-untitled new release!

Kenneth Kiesler, conductor

Pre-concert lecture at 7:15 PM in the lower lobby.

The University Symphony Orchestra and University Philharmonia Orchestra join forces to climb the musical mountain which is Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. Mahler wrote the Sixth Symphony during a particularly happy time, yet this monumental work seems to portray a vision of tragic events that soon followed. It juxtaposes some of the composer’s most gripping and beautiful music.

PROGRAM: Mahler- Symphony No. 6

an opera by George Frideric Handel

University Opera Theatre and University Philharmonia Orchestra

The third of Handel’s operas to be based on the epic poem Orlando furioso (with Orlando and Ariodante), Alcina is the story about a beautiful sorceress named Alcina, who lures men to her enchanted island for love only to turn them into objects or animals when she tires of them. Alcina debuted at the Covent Garden Theatre in London in 1735 to great acclaim. Just a few of the exquisite arias are the famous “Tornami a vagheggiar,” “Verdi prati,” and “Ah, mio cor.” Today, the opera is considered to be one of the composer’s greatest. A moving story of love’s fickleness and faithfulness, Alcina features some of Handel’s most alluring music.

Preston returns home one night to Emma. The conversation they have opens up the floodgates of every problem between them; all of the secrets they've kept from one another, everything they are too afraid to say. Preston suggests a solution—a drinking game. The rules of the game dictate that they pour six shots and ask each other honest, essential questions about the nature of their relationship. At any time, if someone wants to kill a topic or doesn't want to answer the question, they take a shot. If they finish all six shots, it means their relationship is beyond saving and they have to break up. Roulette asks us to consider whether human relationships are built on mutual effort or some uncontrollable, cosmic force.

Roulette asks us to consider whether human relationships are built on mutual effort or some uncontrollable, cosmic force.

an opera by George Frideric Handel

Omar Offendum Residency. Work in Progress Showing: Little Syria (March 30, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62632 62632-15414528@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, March 30, 2019 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Global Islamic Studies Center

Omar Offendum’s residency culminates with a work-in-progress performance. Set amidst the backdrop of the fabled Little Syria neighborhood in NYC (1880-1940), this unique performance project bridges hip-hop & live Arabic instrumentation with the time-honored “Hakawati” storytelling traditions of the Levant. Offendum (Syria via LA) is joined by oud virtuoso Ronnie Malley (Palestine via Chicago) and DJ/beatmaker Thanks Joey (Syria via Brooklyn), to uncover what life in the heart of Arab-America was like over a century ago, while informing much of what is happening today in terms of immigration, xenophobia, Syria, and the ever-evolving notion of an “American dream.”

This event is free but registration is required, please register on the UMS website here: https://ums.org/performance/omar-offendum-residency-work-in-progress-little-syria/

Before there were terms like "roots rock," there were the Subdudes and their acoustic accordion-flavored (and tambourine-spiked) musical brew that came straight out of the warmth and soul of their native New Orleans. The band came together at the famed Tipitina's club in 1987 and took their awesomely funky blues-rock on the road for ten years, winning fans everywhere. The Subdudes, noted the All Music Guide's Tammy La Gorce, "aren't just stellar musicians of the swampy jazz-rock-blues New Orleans persuasion, as they've come to be known. They're also a group of guys whose working-class roots run as definitively, and maybe as deeply, as Bruce Springsteen's." The Subdudes sound has persisted through several changes of personnel, and now they're back, with Steve Amedée on tambourine, making a joyful noise in the world's funkiest city and beyond

A new play by José Casas

Department of Theatre & Drama

In the style of The Laramie Project, Flint explores the current state of the Michigan city’s water crisis through narratives based upon and inspired by the lives and stories of people affected by the tragedy.

Department of Theatre & Drama faculty member and playwright José Casas defines himself as an issue-based playwright. Casas’s new drama creates a mosaic of a city struggling to survive and present itself to the world by exploring its hidden stories and history. Guest stage director Dexter Singleton, now based on the East Coast, grew up in Detroit and has relatives in Flint, bringing a local touch to the production. With many of the issues remaining unresolved four years out, Flint serves as a platform for dialogue regarding the future of the city and its resilient residents, as well as for other communities facing similar problems.

Chicago-based vocal trio Artemisia (Diana Lawrence, Alexandra Olsavsky, and Kaitlin Foley) harnesses the power of the female voice to explore complex social issues through the vocal traditions of the world. Praised for “sincerity, wit, and mind-blowing technique” (Vocal Arts Chicago), Artemisia brings diversity and accessibility to their programming. Not your typical stand-and-sing ensemble, Artemisia draws from a vast repertoire of vocal styles to take audiences on a journey of sound and spirit with every performance. In addition to performing, Artemisia works with community and youth ensembles to advocate for a culturally literate and socially aware approach to singing. Artemisia will be performing their show “Suit and Tie,” a program featuring music that was originally performed by/used by men, now sung by women. It is a fully staged, immersive show that explores gender in music and culture, told through the vocal music traditions from all around the world in an accessible and humorous narrative.

The New York Times has called Willie Nile "one of the most gifted singer-songwriters to emerge from the New York scene in years." His album "Streets Of New York" was hailed as "a platter for the ages" by Uncut. Bono, Lou Reed, Lucinda Williams, and Jim Jarmusch are among those who have sung his praises. Willie Nile's live performances, like his recent razor's-edge set at the 2014 Ann Arbor Folk Festival, are legendary. He has toured across the U.S. opening for The Who at the personal request of the band and sung with Bruce Springsteen at Giants Stadium. Willie was born in Buffalo, New York, sings, plays guitar and piano, lives in New York City, and has outstanding parking tickets in many states. He comes to Michigan with a new release, "Children of Paradise."

Reehorst’s work investigates female performance within the canon of classical ballet, repositioning “her” as strategic and wild, soft and resilient.

To call Peter Mulvey an acoustic singer-songwriter and guitarist just doesn't cover it. He's equally—and tremendously on all counts—gifted as a singer, writer, and guitarist. Says the Irish Examiner: "Peter Mulvey is one of the most accomplished guitarists you're ever likely to hear … utterly original … it is nigh on impossible to explain him to the uninitiated … his intelligent and sometimes complex songs engage both hemispheres of the listener's brain." Peter grew up in Milwaukee, made his debut on the streets of Dublin, and moved to Boston, performing in subways and finally clubs. His latest album was produced by Ani DiFranco, whom he befriended when she added a verse to his song "Take Down Your Flag," about the shootings at the AME Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina. "I heard a young folksinger at a festival last summer sing a line about how our job is to sing the people through, and I think that young man is right as rain," Peter says. "I’m doing my best." Peter returns from his MC slot at the 2019 Ann Arbor Folk Festival with a new album "Fool's Errand".

Pre-performance lecture “Behind the Scenes of Der Kaiser von Atlantis,” with lecturers Jessica Grimmer and Patricia Hall on music in the Holocaust, Tereízn, and Viktor Ullmann at 7:00 PM in Glenn E. Watkins Lecture Hall.

Composed by Viktor Ullmann around 1943, while imprisoned in the WWII ghetto Terezín (Theresienstadt) in Czechoslovakia, the opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis takes a satirical look at totalitarianism and systematic suppression. Banned by the Nazis, Der Kaiser did not resurface for another 30 years, following Ullmann’s violent death in Auschwitz. Examining what we learn from the past in order to resist future racist, political, or exclusionary ideologies, this third opera brings together the collaborative ideas of seven graduate and doctoral voice students. Performed with chamber ensemble.

UM RC Deutsches Theater presents Blaubart - Hoffnung der Frauen (April 6, 2019 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/62646 62646-15416709@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, April 6, 2019 8:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

In this sometimes dark, sometimes hilarious play by contemporary German playwright Dea Loher, you’ll meet Heinrich Blaubart (Blaubart means Blue Beard), who bears some resemblance to Blue Beard from the French fairy tale by the same name, who kills his wives when they disobey him and enter the forbidden chamber of his castle. Like the original Blue Beard, Heinrich Blaubart brings death to women he meets. Unlike the original Blue Beard, though, he doesn’t seek to do so; in fact, his fear of relationships makes him try to avoid women. This, of course, makes him all the more attractive to the women he encounters. On a deeper level, the play suggests that everyone is searching for something different and for some acceptance. Perhaps one should take heed, though, of Maeterlinck’s warning that: “There is a Blue Beard room in everyone’s soul that should never be opened.”

Presented in German by students enrolled in RCHums334: From the Page to the Stage. Surtitles will make it possible for even non-German speakers to follow the action on stage. Directed by Janet Hegman Shier.

Saturday, April 6 at 8 PM and Sunday matinée, April 7 at 2 PM in the Keene Theater (lower level of East Quad).

We recommend a donation of $5 or non-perishable food items though no one will be turned away at the door. Proceeds go to SAFE HOUSE and Food Gatherers.

About RC Deutsches Theater: Since 1985, the focus of this RC course offering is on acting and on reading plays by contemporary German-speaking authors. We supertitle our plays. Audiences will note the resemblance to the way theater is performed in much of Europe with minimal (or sometimes no) set.

The Campus and University Bands bring a wide array of moods and colors to the stage in this concert. From the vigor of Michael Daugherty, David Maslanka, Paul Hindemith, Clifton Williams, Alfred Reed and James Curnow, to the sweet melodies of Malcolm Arnold and Joel Puckett, the concert abounds with vitality and celebrates the rich tradition of the wind band. A wind setting of Ave Maria by Franz Biebl is dedicated in memory of Maggie St. Clair, a beloved member of the Michigan band family who passed away last November. Her 30 years of passion and dedication to the University of Michigan bands changed lives and influenced generations of band members.

Blending the best of traditional Irish music with Bluegrass and Americana in a new genre which has been branded as 'I-Grass' (Irish-influenced Bluegrass), their onstage energy along with their virtuosic musical ability has captivated audiences throughout the world. Says "Here's an Irish band that's going to impact the world as hard as Clancy Brothers or U2 if they get only half a chance." Jamie McKeogh, Cathal Guinan and Daithi Melia all hail from Tullamore, County Offaly with County Tipperary–born Gavin Strappe completing the quartet. All four members grew up immersed in Irish traditional music and culture, and the band has collectively achieved over twenty All-Ireland titles at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann competitions. They have now developed their own unique style of music influenced by American folk music whilst staying true to their Irish roots. They've recorded two albums and are coming to Michigan with one more.

CIUM proudly presents a grand performance of The Lute: Cai Bojie, a Filial Son and a Loyal Official (琵琶记:蔡伯喈) by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theater of Jiangsu Province on April 13, 2019 at the Michigan Theater.

Authored by Gao Ming (fl. 1340s), Pipaji (琵琶记) is a centuries-old masterpiece of Chinese drama/opera that is an allegory of Chinese filial piety, loyalty, sacrifice and gendered rights and responsibilities. Featuring many dramatic moments performed with flowing songs and elegant acting-dancing, the Lute has been continuously performed and negotiated in China. Recently, new versions of the story have been staged as a performance-discourse of 21st century Chinese morals and life-styles. The version to be presented in Ann Arbor premiered in Suzhou in 2018.

Andrew Brown's Djangophonique is a musical project that performs Jazz Manouche and Hot Swing inspired by the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his Quintette du Hot Club de France.    Born in a sandstone victorian farmhouse that has been in his family since it was built four generations ago, Andrew Brown is the son of a Motown session musician and grew up listening to the sounds of his dad’s piano as he steeped in musical influences from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder. As a young man returning from a trip to New Orleans with a newfound interest in swing he co-founded the eclectic americana group Appleseed Collective, with whom he has toured 150+ dates a year. Traveling all over the continental United States, playing esteemed venues and festivals such as The Ark, Sisters Folk Festival, Wheatland, Cervantes Ballroom, Summercamp Music Festival, Schuba’s, and The Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium, he cut his teeth as a guitarist, songwriter and band leader. Since slowing down his touring schedule in 2017 he began tirelessly studying and performing the music of his favorite guitar player: Django Reinhardt. Since then he has studied at various music camps with many of the genres heavy hitting players such as Angelo Debarre, Sebastian Gineaux, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was even invited to back up Denis Chang at one of his concerts. Andrew currently plays throughout Michigan with his own project Djangophonique, his band Appleseed Collective, and his friends projects Third Coast Gypsy Jazz, Smoking Dandies. He also teaches guitar, both generally and specifically in the style of Django.

Daring Dances Student Fellows present global dance exploration of social issues in this  evening performance. The Daring Dances project, led by U-M dance professor Clare Croft, embraces how dance invites us into difficult conversations. This project  includes a Student Fellowship program to support U-M students with interests in dance and social justice.

Featuring work by:
Amala Dancers, a U of M student organization, who create a collective dance space for all students of African descent. This group engages in a cultural sharing between the African Diaspora and the African Continent, connecting those who were removed from their ancestral movement lineage to its longstanding history. South Asian Awareness Network, a U of M student organization, who will share excerpts of their new work, Bloom, which uses bharatnatyam, spoken word, and music to create an interdisciplinary performance on sexual assault awareness and self-empowerment of survivors in the South Asian community. (Adjacent space available for self-care for survivors during the performance.) “Regained,” a performance exploring dance as a form of healing, by U-M Dance majors Shannon Nulf and Victoria Briones.

The SMTD@UMMA performance series is generously supported by the Katherine Tuck Enrichment Fund and the Greg Hodes and Heidi Hertel Hodes—Partners in the Arts Endowment Fund.
