The Big Fun Trio has been playing dances around the Midwest since 2012, ranging from Toronto to Columbus, and many points in between. The trio is composed of Marty Somberg, one of the best Irish fiddlers around who has hosted the Sunday night Irish music session at Conor O’Neill’s pub in Ann Arbor for 17 years; Brad Battey, one of the region’s most sought after contra fiddlers; and Myron Grant on guitar, harmonica, vocals. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, they’ll be playing mostly Irish tunes, but may include a New England contra tune, Old Time, Swing, Texas Swing, or an original tune or two. Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Writing in her own genre, Karissa Bone introduces music with the bop-factor of Pop, the soul of R&B, and the unexpected element of pinpointed introspective lyrics. Hailing from Saginaw, MI, her style is influenced by Motown, Classic Rock, and everything in life that goes sideways. Her airy, yet powerful voice melts together with her soul-twisting lyrics to make every song a memorable journey. Whether she’s with a full band, string section, at a grand piano, or playing solo with her electric guitar, Bone’s live shows are full of energy and belonging. With short comedic breaks, she seamlessly covers topics from heartbreak to nostalgia, to the modern age of technology. Her artistry truly shows through– when she sings, you stop and listen.

In 2019, while studying at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance, Bone paid her dues in Ann Arbor, where she's performed at the famed Blind Pig, the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, and the Canterbury House. She currently studies songwriting at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

You can find her on Instagram @itskarissabone

With a sweetly mellifluous soprano echoing Blossom Dearie’s lighter-than-air
approach as well as her gift for evocative songwriting, Kat Edmonson is a rare
artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant.
Her unusually charming and seamless blend of old and new has garnered
attention on “NPR Tiny Desk Concerts”, “Austin City Limits”, and “A Prairie Home
Companion”.
The vintage pop and jazz vocalist’s new album Dreamers Do is out February 7,
2020 with a forty-city, U.S. tour to follow. The album blends original
compositions and reimagined mid 20 th century classic Disney songs, and tells a
story which takes place over the course of one sleepless night. Dreamers Do
follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an
intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.”

The Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. In many ways, they could have continued creating joyful, booty-shaking songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows—and mining new energetic material from the place where folk music, funk, and soul meet. But the band’s newest album, "Is It You, Is It Me," is something different entirely. Produced by Sam Kassirer [Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter] and engineered by Brian Joseph [Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens], it represents the latest stage in a band that never stops evolving and refuses to stand still. The album tackles uneasy topics—often where the political feels personal, especially in the defiant "Get Rid of You," which was inspired by the student activists who emerged from the tragic Parkland High School shooting in Florida. The ominous driving brass groove of "Enemy" hones in on a painful generational split between a daughter and her parents who may have voted in a tyrant, and have become strangers to her. This yearning search for common ground pervades the record as a whole.

Brian Vander Ark is the lead singer of the Verve Pipe, which became one of Michigan's biggest rock bands of the last decade with songs like the number-one hit "The Freshmen." In 2001 he appeared as part of the band Blood Pollution in the Mark Wahlberg movie "Rock Star." Then he lit out on his own, selling all his possessions and rediscovering his love of performing. He has charisma to spare! On his studio albums, plus several more or less official live releases (an Ark show is a good place to pick up the more obscure items), Brian has taken up personal themes of family, love, and loss. The Grand Rapids Press hails Brian's way of "adroitly meshing acoustic grace with penetrating rock and pop power." Oh, and his name means "of The Ark" in Dutch. If you haven't seen this rock legend's solo show yet, what are you waiting for?

Perspectives Ensemble, in cooperation with the Center for Armenian Studies, presents a musical evening featuring the performances of Zulal, a vocal trio composed of Teni Apelian, Anaïs Alexandra Tekerian, and Yeraz Markarian, and Perspectives Ensemble members, Artistic Director and flutist Sato Moughalian, harpist Stacey Shames, and guest percussionist Mike List.

“Dark Eyes/New Eyes” celebrates Armenian music in a program that embraces ancestral village songs, as well as other traditional and composed pieces by historic and contemporary composers. The concert pays homage to the journeys of our families, ancestors and departed ones. Six musicians offer lively and contemplative music, including sharagans (Armenian hymns), work songs, humorous songs, and folk songs preserved by the great Armenian composer-musicologist Gomidas Vartabed, in his own transcriptions, as well as new arrangements, languidly beautiful melodies of 18th-century troubadour/composer Sayat-Nova, the music of Alan Hovhannes, and the beloved "Lullaby" from Aram Khatchaturian’s ballet "Gayane"--one of several new arrangements by Yerevan-based composer Artur Akshelyan.

Peggy Choy’s lifetime of dance has become a means to frame and navigate the dangerous times in which we live. While life and our environment can inform dance, Choy also examines the converse, that dance can inform our life and environment. Join Professor Choy for an evening of her own dance stories—both spoken and performed. This event is free and open to the public.

Peggy Myo-Young Choy’s dance alchemy of focused mind and moving body is fueled by Asian dance, martial arts, as well as urban vernacular dance forms. Choy’s seminal solos include, “Comfort Woman” and “Wild Rice.” She has also created solos around the themes—“Sea Series” and “Blood Series.” Her women-centered stories created since the mid-1990s, integrate her foundations in Korean dance, Javanese dance, and martial arts.

Peggy Choy, associate professor of Dance and Asian-American Studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison, is director of PEGGY CHOY DANCE company. Her company has performed around the world—at New York’s Dance Theater Workshop, La Mama E.T.C., and Alvin Ailey Studio, DC’s Kennedy Center, Dance Place and the Smithsonian Institution, Kennedy Theater in Honolulu, Utan Kayu in Jakarta, Seoul Art Center in Korea, Danza Teatro Retazos in Havana, and Baráčnická Rychta in Prague, and the Korean Cultural Center in Berlin.

Choy's national and international awards include an NEA/Atlantic Center for the Arts fellowship, Danspace Project's Commissioning Initiative, Princeton and Cornell University commissions, and commissions from the Kintari Foundation, Seoul Selection, and Cafe Intarsia.

This work was supported by the Core University Program for Korean Studies through the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea and Korean Studies Promotion Service of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS-2016-OLU-2240001).

Rainbow Girls are an eclectic trio comprising three unique musical talents—Vanessa May, Erin Chapin, and Caitlin Gowdey—who seamlessly combine heart-wrenching harmonies, emotive guitar work, and poignant lyrical content into an unusually beautiful sonic tapestry. Hailing from the golden countryside just north of California's Bay Area, they make music that delves deeply into themes of the human experience: hopeful love, honest self-reflection, and pursuits of social justice. Their latest album, "American Dream," crystallizes these ideas in acoustic amber, encapsulating a beautiful new direction for their evolving sound. Originally formed in Santa Barbara in 2010, Rainbow Girls have spread their musical wings both internationally and domestically, from busking on the streets of Europe and playing pubs and theaters in the UK, to house concerts, festivals, and shows in the US. Rainbow Girls have also gained recognition on NPR's Tiny Desk concert series and KQED radio's "The California Report."

Performances featuring new work by the 2019-20 Daring Dances Student Fellows: Ambiance Dance, Arabesque Dance Troupe, Iraqi Student Association, and the Queer Arts Collective. Centered in the southeastern region of Michigan, Daring Dances embraces how dance, through art-making and spectatorship, invites us into difficult conversations—conversations among those with whom we share identities and values and conversations across differences. As racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia proliferate in public space and public policy in our current moment, Daring Dances supports emerging new work by choreographers based in the Midwest, encouraging students at the University of Michigan making dance related to social justice, and conducting “Experiments in Coalition,” community engagement work that brings together communities around dance performance making and viewing.

an operetta by Johann Strauss II
Directed by Grant Preisser, University Opera Theatre
Conducted by Kirk Severtson, University Philharmonia Orchestra

Scheming and devious plans run amuck to culminate in a hilarious comeuppance in this re-imagined, gender-bent take on Strauss's light-hearted comedy filled with lush Viennese waltzes. Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome to ... The Fledermaus--Berlin’s hottest cabaret! It’s New Year’s Eve 1932, and Orlofsky’s club is preparing for its annual blow-out celebration. However, more is afoot this year than usual as Orlofsky and Rosalinde, the headline singer of the cabaret, scheme to out Rosalinde’s playboy and apparently bi-sexual husband, Gabriel von Eisenstein. With the aid of Eisenstein’s friend Dr. Falke, Rosalinde feigns an illness, clearing the path for Eisenstein to attend the party and indulge in his proclivities without his wife present. Unbeknownst to Eisenstein, Rosalinde does, in fact, attend-in full male drag-with the aim to seduce her husband and confirm the rumors of his broadening predilections. Of course, things never go quite as planned, and as the party rages on, champagne flows, secrets are revealed, and disguises come off, leading to a lesson for some and a happy reconciliation for all.

Full of pranks, disguises, and overall merriment, Die Fledermaus is Johann Strauss II’s most loved operetta, featuring the Hungarian “Csardas,” and Orlofsky’s “Toast to Champagne.” This updated take explores themes of sexuality and gender identification, as present in the 1930s as they are today. This production will be sung in German with dialogue in English and German and projected English translations.

Center for World Performance Studies hosts groundbreaking vocalist, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer Jen Shyu for an artist residency, including a performance of her new multilingual multimedia show Zero Grasses. In this mythical monodrama, Shyu effortlessly weaves together music, monologue and video projection, tracing the threads of her life to explore the painful terrain of expectation, ambition, longing and love. The work features Shyu’s original music as well as some traditional music from these countries, with movement and installation art that carry the essence of these specific vocal and dance traditions. Shyu will accompany her voice with Taiwanese moon lute, gayageum, piano, violin, dance, and electronics.

The potluck aims to engage faculty and staff and their families, alongside students from RC Music Programs. Shyu’s community engagement performances are designed around intercultural song exchange, and she is currently doing this work as part of a 50 state tour funded by the Doris Duke Performing Artist Fund and MAP Fund.

Rising Lansing singer-songwriter Jen Sygit (rhymes with "dig it") has gained airplay with a pleasantly bluesy sound that carries forward influences from Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt, and Lucinda Williams. She comes to Michigan with a new album, "It's About Time," produced by longtime friend and collaborator Dominic John Davis (bassist to Jack White, Buddy Miller, North Mississippi Allstars, Joshua Davis). This new collection of original songs is an eclectic journey drawing influences from a cross section of middle America spanning from the Gulf Shore sands to the Great Lakes basin. It's sounding like a career maker for this Michigan musician, so if you haven't heard Jen for a while, come and check it out!

an operetta by Johann Strauss II

The Campus Symphony Orchestra presents a program of popular orchestral works. The program features Antonin Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World,” which describes Dvořák 's new life in America. Evoking Native-American chant, work-songs, spirituals, and Czech folk music, it is one of the most tuneful and ear-catching symphonies in the repertoire. Aaron Copland's “Buckaroo Holiday" from the ballet Rodeo opens the program with upbeat rhythms and old cowboy songs. Samuel Barber's lesser-known First Essay follows, combining pensive reflections with urban agitation.

The Campus Philharmonia Orchestra presents a colorful program inspired in dances. The journey starts with the Bohemian rhythms of Smetana’s Three Dances from The Bartered Bride: The “Polka”, the “Furiant” and the “Dance of the Comedians.” The next piece on the program is Gabriel Faure’s elegant and processional, Pavane. The “Waltz of the Flowers” from the popular and celebrated Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky continues the program, which ends with the Russian folk flavor of the “Polovtsian Dances” from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin.

When is a sound heard as noise? How does one communicate what is noise to others? Drawing upon ethnographic research on Taiwan’s present-day noise control system, this talk examines the transformation of aural experience into contrasting modes of representation: decibel measurements and audio recordings. While decibel measurements are valued by government officials as objective, quantifiable indicators of noise, audio recordings are commonly used by Taipei city residents as an alternative, contextualized method to document the presence of noise. The emergence of two competing forms of “making noise” calls attention to the unique challenge of reproducing aural experience so that it may be recognizable and shared by others. In this talk, I argue that Taipei residents and environmental inspectors participate in an economy of machine listening, consisting of the decibel meter and home recording device, that aims to reconfigure auditory experience from the individual to the social. While acoustic ecologist R. Murray Schafer has drawn attention to the denigrating effects of mechanical reproduction on the auditory environment, residents and state actors in Taiwan actually come to know noise through the tools of mechanical reproduction.

Jennifer Hsieh is currently working on a book project, tentatively entitled From Festival to Decibel: Making Noise in Urban Taiwan, which is a historical and ethnographic study of the scientific, bureaucratic, and audiovisual practices underlying the production of environmental noise from early twentieth-century Taiwan to the present. Dr. Hsieh examines the efforts of residents, policy makers, and environmental inspectors to transform the fleeting qualities of sound into a regulatory object. By analyzing noise control practices of three separate political regimes in Taiwan, Dr. Hsieh investigates how perceptual acts of hearing and listening are tied to geopolitical questions of citizenship and belonging.

Dr. Hsieh has worked in a number of capacities to facilitate equity and inclusion for students, such as tutoring bilingual youth, developing leadership skills among underrepresented students, and mentoring international students. Dr. Hsieh's background in community-based public service in Dallas and Boston further informs Dr. Hsieh's commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds, including those from first-generation and immigrant households. In Dr. Hsieh's teaching and mentoring, Dr. Hsieh work towards providing an inclusive learning environment for students by attending to different learning styles, linguistic competencies, and knowledge practices.

Rose Cousins just might be Nova Scotia's answer to Iris DeMent, or even to Kate Wolf. Says Lifestyle Nova Scotia: "Cousins writes songs strong on story, melody, and honest observations ... that demand an unaffected but beautiful voice." Her album "We Have Made a Spark" took home a Canadian Juno Award along with many other awards, including a spot on NPR's Top 10 Americana & Folk Albums list. Rose spends part of her time in Boston, where she's found strong support from the city's vibrant songwriting community, but she maintains strong ties to her Canadian roots. Rooted in authenticity and conviction of voice, the songs of Rose Cousins make you feel as though she sings for you, about your life. "We develop patterns that keep us from moving forward," Rose says. "It takes a deep breath and a bucket of courage to face the uncomfortable, painful things we work so hard to avoid. Reward comes from recognizing the obstacle exists and pushing through fear." She comes to Michigan with a new album, "Bravado."

a play by Chay Yew
Directed by Matthew Ozawa

Using dance, drag, drama, and documentary elements, A Beautiful Country chronicles 150 years of Asian-American immigration history. Miss Visa Denied, a drag queen and performer, is the narrator who guides the audience through the turbulent history of Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese people coming to America. Heartfelt testimonials and the dramatization of some highly vibrant and egregious pieces of propaganda showcase the provocative events that have shaped this history. Addressing issues of race, gender, and appropriation, this play examines the fundamental questions surrounding the immigrant experience, including what it means to be an American.

The Moradokmai Theatre Community of Thailand

A dramatization of the story of Nonthok, one of the most beloved episodes from the Thai epic, the Ramakien. Nonthok serves as foot-washer to the celestial angels, who tease him about his duties. He gets a magic finger from the higher God to protect himself, but ends up misusing it. The moral of the story: if everyone does their duty, the world will be safe and sound.

The Moradokmai Theatre Community is affiliated with a home school by the same name; the group is touring the U.S. to raise awareness of the needs of the elderly and disabled in its community.

Organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies; cosponsored by the Center for World Performance Studies and the Department of Asian Languages and Culture.

a play by Chay Yew

Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Cedric Burnside needs to cancel the April 10th performance and looks forward to returning to The Ark later this year to follow up on an incredible performance at Folk Fest. All ticket holders will receive a refund.

"My school was a juke joint, from a kid till I was grown, and blues is really all I ever known," sings Cedric Burnside on his new album, "Benton County Relic." And it's no wonder. The 39-year-old, though he's just back from a European tour, still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs, Mississippi, home where he was raised by "Big Daddy," his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside, whom Cedric famously played with, just as his own father, drummer Calvin Jackson, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues, more specifically, the rhythmically unorthodox Hill country variant that emerged from Mississippi, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough, Jessie May Hemphill, and Otha Turner, as well as Delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul "Wine" Jones. Cedric has played and recorded with the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson gave him his first electric guitar), Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears ,and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But beyond that, he writes from personal experience, and he's bringing traditional blues to a new generation.

Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale, California, the duo offers breathtaking harmonies and a heartfelt sound that they dub cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. We make music that’s reflective of the landscape we grew up with in southern California,” says Clay. "It’s a big sweep of all the really rich influences you encounter around here: folk and psychedelic and country and Latin and rock and cowboy and Hawaiian. We’re drawing from a really deep well." Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them. Mapache comes to Michigan with a brand new release, "From Liberty Street."

The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society invites you to come aboard the H.M.S Pinafore for a performance filled with comedy and social satire! The story takes place aboard the ship, H.M.S. Pinafore, where class differences jeopardize the love between the captain's daughter, Josephine, and the lowly sailor, Ralph Rackstraw. The captain would rather his daughter marry the important (and self important) Sir Joseph, the First Lord of the Admiralty. Can love level ranks or are there more surprises in store?

Makoto Takata directs a cast from the University of Michigan and the wider southeastern Michigan community, including Adam Chase, Alexis Pratt, David Andrews, Heather Nordenbrock, Lee Vahlsing, and Don Regan.

Join us for the inagural event in the Ark Family Room Series with none other than Steve Poltz!

Saturday April 11th, 8pm Eastern at --> www.facebook.com/TheArkAnnArbor/

In 20 years since his full-length solo debut, One Left Shoe, Steve Poltz blessed the world’s ears with thirteen solo records, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently, Shine On, in 2019. NPR summed it up best, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.”

Evoking themes of “hope, love, contemplation, celebration of Wednesday, pharmacists, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges everyone to, “Shine on, shine on.”

a play by Chay Yew
