a play by Chay Yew
Directed by Matthew Ozawa

Using dance, drag, drama, and documentary elements, A Beautiful Country chronicles 150 years of Asian-American immigration history. Miss Visa Denied, a drag queen and performer, is the narrator who guides the audience through the turbulent history of Chinese, Filipino, and Japanese people coming to America. Heartfelt testimonials and the dramatization of some highly vibrant and egregious pieces of propaganda showcase the provocative events that have shaped this history. Addressing issues of race, gender, and appropriation, this play examines the fundamental questions surrounding the immigrant experience, including what it means to be an American.

Join us for the inagural event in the Ark Family Room Series with none other than Steve Poltz!

Saturday April 11th, 8pm Eastern at --> www.facebook.com/TheArkAnnArbor/

In 20 years since his full-length solo debut, One Left Shoe, Steve Poltz blessed the world’s ears with thirteen solo records, spanning the acclaimed 2010 Dreamhouse and most recently, Shine On, in 2019. NPR summed it up best, “Critics and fans alike now regard Poltz as a talented and prolific songwriter.”

Evoking themes of “hope, love, contemplation, celebration of Wednesday, pharmacists, and the fact that windows are not inanimate objects and they sometimes have conversations with each other,” Shine On represents Steve at his most inspired and insightful. The opener and title track pairs a delicate vocal with lithely plucked acoustic strings as he urges everyone to, “Shine on, shine on.”

Encores are traditionally the “dessert” of a concert, called upon after a meaty program of sonatas and savorier repertoire. Sometimes they are whimsical little things, charming and sweet, other times full of fire, flash, and virtuosity. Violinists from the studio of Danielle Belen join with pianists from SMTD to perform works in this genre from around the world.

The John Jorgenson Band, or J2B2 for short, is a bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians—John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen (The Dillards, Desert Rose Band) on banjo, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder) on bass; and Patrick Sauber ("A Mighty Wind") on acoustic guitar and vocals—delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band's high-powered live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock), and seasoned showmanship. This is the "high lonesome sound" of American roots music at its finest.

A 2019–2020 Carillon Studio DEI initiative, Global Rings features student carillon compositions and arrangements of folk tunes, stories, and issues from around the world. In Global Rings, students and visiting carillonist Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra diversify the carillon repertoire, lift up marginalized and underrepresented voices, reveal injustices, broaden perspectives, build bridges, and welcome audience members from around the world.

Global Rings themes include First People tunes, African American spirituals, folk tunes from Taiwan, Korea, China, Nicaragua, Russia, and Japan; Hebrew songs and lullabies from Basque people, Armenia, and Venezuela; songs and stories of protest, climate change from the South African water crisis to the Jamaican earthquake, standing up against oppressive governments, trafficking and violence against women in Venezuela and India, a bluegrass song and a piano rag, a Jewish partisan song from the Holocaust, a piece telling the story of the lonely whale, Hertz 52, a piece influenced by the jaunty rhythms and close harmonies of Bulgarian choral music, and new compositions about global luminaries MLK Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, and Toni Morrison.

Bring a picnic and enjoy the concert while sitting or strolling around the engineering campus, or take the Lurie elevator to the 3rd floor to see the global ringers close-up.

Tap your feet to the Gershwins’ timeless tunes!

Music by George Gershwin
Lyrics by Ira Gershwin
Book by Peter Stone and Timothy S. Mayer
Directed and Choreographed by Linda Goodrich
Music Direction by Catherine A. Walker

My One and Only is a delightfully frothy romp, buoyed by a tuneful Gershwin score and exuberant dance numbers. Conceived as a new book for the Gershwins' most-loved songs, My One and Only features such standards as ‘’S Wonderful,” “Funny Face,” “I Can’t Be Bothered Now,” “Strike Up the Band,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It” and “Kickin’ the Clouds Away.” It's 1927 New York, and aviator Billy Buck Chandler is determined to be the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic. His plans are derailed when he meets Edyth Herbert, a British ingénue who previously swam the English Channel and now performs in an Aquacade under the thumb of the villainous Prince Nikki. Can the two navigate the obstacles in their path as they sing and dance their way toward love?

My One and Only opened on Broadway in 1983 starring Tommy Tune and Twiggy. It was a huge success, garnering nine Tony Award nominations and three wins for Best Actor, Best Featured Actor, and Best Choreography. The latter award, shared by star Tommy Tune and his co-choreographer Thommie Walsh, was especially well deserved: critic Frank Rich of The New York Times said that the show “levitates with some of the most inspired choreography Broadway has seen in several seasons.” With numerous show-stopping dance numbers set to timeless Gershwin tunes, My One and Only guarantees a toe-tapping good time!

The Sweet Remains consist of three gifted and charismatic singer-songwriters, each of whom contribute to the writing and the three-part harmonies that define the band's sound. Driven by strong lyrical and melodic writing, their songs easily appeal to fans of modern folk-rockers like Jason Mraz, Ray Lamontagne, and John Mayer. However, it is their lush harmonies, that distinguish The Sweet Remains from the throngs of guitar-toting troubadour, harking back to supergroups of the 60's and 70's like CSN, the Eagles, and Simon & Garfunkel. When Rich Price, Greg Naughto, and Brian Chartrand met for a chance jam session in a Rhode Island hotel room in 2008, the three instantly recognized a musical blend and kinship that would eventually overcome geography (and solo careers) to form The Sweet Remains. Since then they've toured as far away as Denmark and Germany, and gained critical raves from the likes of the Boston Herald, which wrote that "it's been a long time since three-part harmonies this lush were yoked to songs this melodically gorgeous." Come and luxuriate in the sounds of the harmony trio of the year! The Sweet Remains come to town with new music—they've been releasing a song a month.

Our senses are our channels of contact with the world around us. Although we have traditionally thought of our different senses (touch, taste, etc.) as separate and having distinct jobs to do, it is becoming clear that the brain is not so neatly compartmentalized. Signals from different senses interact with each other, and the same information about the world can be accessed via different sensory channels. These discoveries have been important for understanding our auditory sense. We are finding that perception of things that were assumed to rely on vision or touch, such as shape, size or motions of objects, may also be perceived through sound. However, while this research has largely focussed on how we recognize these sorts of aspects of objects and events, perception is primarily for helping us navigate and interact with the world around us. That is, perception is intimately connected with action and vice versa. To get a better picture of the roles and potentials of the auditory sense, we need to explore how sounds can be actively brought into use to coordinate purposeful behavior. In this presentation, I will discuss research into how auditory perception can influence and guide different types of action. I will also describe some real-world scenarios in which these processes may be applied, including clinical gait rehabilitation and motor skill learning.

Based on an excerpt from the Book of Daniel, La Susanna tells the story of two elderly men who, spying on the virtuous young Susanna bathing naked in her garden, lust after her and pursue her. Rejected by Susanna, in their spite, they publicly accuse her of adultery, punishable by death. Exploring themes of sexual assault, misogyny, and entitlement, this fully-staged opera features a stand-out cast of undergraduate and graduate voice majors, accompanied by the stellar Early Music Ensemble.

Jacob Warren and Grant Flick explore the nuanced textures of a two-person band. Using both original material and  personally arranged standards from many genres, the group finds new depth in the simplicity of duets. The two met at the 2015 Acoustic Music Seminar, a program accepting only sixteen young string players from around the world to participate in a week of intense improvisation, composition and performance training. With Jacob’s classical foundation and Grant’s experience in bluegrass and jazz, their contrasting backgrounds give Warren & Flick a unique and compelling musical narrative. You can find out more on their website, or follow them on Instagram and Facebook.

Kenneth Kiesler, conductor

Pre-concert lecture at 1:45 PM with editors and Copland scholars Aaron Sherber and Jennifer DeLapp-Birkett.

When Appalachian Spring was premiered in the fall of 1944, with choreography by Martha Graham who danced with her company, and an ensemble of 13 musicians, an iconic American work was born. Composer Aaron Copland received the Pulitzer Prize, and the shortened orchestral suite became one of the most beloved pieces of the orchestral repertoire. In this concert, Kenneth Kiesler, who conducted later performances of the work with the Martha Graham Company, conducts the premiere of the new critical edition of the complete ballet score. The new critical edition is a project of MUSA (Music in the United States), which is housed at SMTD. This concert is the final event of a national conductors’ workshop sponsored by the Conductors’ Guild, taught by Kenneth Kiesler, and hosted by SMTD.

The Voice Department in partnership with the Early Music Ensemble, under the direction of Prof. Joseph Gascho, presents Alessandro Stradella’s two-part oratorio La Susanna.

In conjunction with Earth Day's 50th anniversary and its Artists for the Earth program, The Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor will be presenting a new choral drama at UMMA. Curated by Ben Cohen, Music for a Meanwhile Earth, interlaces actors, soloists and choral artists in a program that is both an existential exploration and a call to action.  Antaeus, the giant who draws strength when in contact with the earth, faces a crisis when Hercules lifts him off the ground on his way to his eleventh labor.  What do they say to each other in the bearhug? Music and texts from the Renaissance to contemporary surround and intersperse the story, including a world premiere by composer Evan Hause, a setting of Yeats' poem "The Two Trees".

This program is organized by the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor and co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Bonded together by the members' common interest in a musically historical and honest sound, Cold Tone Harvest formed in southeast Michigan in late 2008. The band comprises singer/songwriter Andrew Sigworth, bassist Ozzie Andrews, drummer/banjo player Brian Williams, and guitarist Anthony Pace. Their union came to fruition much like the music itself did: formulated with patience and mixed with a rugged determination. The paradoxical name proves itself uncannily fitting, as expertly delivered Americana tropes and soundscapes gradually crack at the seams, revealing a shimmering sliver of something else entirely. Country-infused melodies and rhythms lace with a lush ambience often reserved for the loneliest of instrumental compositions. Rich and rugged baritone vocals, clearly suited to whiskey songs and heartache anthems, instead turn their howls and growls towards brave and poetic lyric territory rarely found in a common folk or bluegrass outing. Cold Tone Harvest rides a rare and beautiful line, delivering a wall of sound that will grab the ear of the rowdiest music festival enthusiasts, partnered with the textual eloquence and deeply layered arrangement that begs for solitary repeat listens. Kate Peterson (of Nervous but Excited) opens.

Their influences range from Swedish polskas, to Irish jigs and reels– all through the lens of American old-time and bluegrass. Having grown up as friends in the Midwest, Richards and Davis have since lived in many places and traveled the country, allowing different folk traditions to shape their playing. Now, the two reside in Southeast Michigan and enjoy a reunion of their different musical experiences in this duo project.

This Charleston (SC)–based quintet performs timeless music born from the Gullah culture of the southeastern Sea Islands. Their debut album was featured on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross and the Today show. It also soared to the #1 position on the Billboard, Amazon, and iTunes Jazz Charts. Playful game songs, ecstatic shouts, and heartbreaking spirituals can all be found on their latest release, "Good Time," which also offers the group's first original songs inspired by Gullah tradition. Ranky Tanky was nominated for a 2019 Grammy award in the Best Regional Roots Album category, and their live show is a sensation like you haven't seen since The War and Treaty outgrew the Ark stage.

Be ready to shout, sing, and shed a tear! Jared Deck presents his new album, Bully Pulpit, full of gospel shouts, country storytelling, and soulful crooning. Jared’s eponymous debut album received praise from American Songwriter Magazine and Rolling Stone Country. In 2016, his blue-collar anthem “The American Dream” was awarded winner of the Woody Guthrie Songwriting Contest. Jared's new album, Bully Pulpit, offers a dichotic soundtrack to Deck’s diverse working background. Produced by Grammy-nominee Wes Sharon (John Fullbright, Parker Millsap), it features performances by members of Flying Burrito Brothers, Turnpike Troubadours, and Heart. For a man who’s been on both sides of the pulpit, outsourced by a corporation, defeated in an election, and fired from church, the album title rings true. Bully Pulpit harmonizes Deck’s country storytelling with his gospel upbringing and blue-collar authenticity.

A huge part of The Cormorant is the lush vocal texture throughout, from our singers Allen Tate, Claire Wellin, and Karlie Bruce, as well as guests like Samia, Eliza Bagg (Lisel), and Sarah Pedinotti (Lip Talk). In planning this tour, San Fermin thought it would be cool to highlight this aspect of the music, stripping down the instrumental arrangements and allowing the singers to take center stage. You’ll see a different, quieter side of San Fermin, more vulnerable and intimate.

Stolen Silver is the musical culmination of a decade-long friendship between songwriters Levi Britton and Dan Myers. It's a union that dates back to their days as roommates in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood, one that entails a history as previous touring bandmates, collaborators and, most importantly, singers. Their voices are instruments, seemingly effortless and vital to their mutual craft. on the stage, where ideas are fresh and nothing is left unattempted. Their styles swerve along a spectrum that spans from indie folk to Americana, from pop-rock to more explorative soundtrack moments where the spaces in the songs are equally important to their narrative, undoubtedly due to Myers’ work as a film composer. Praise and momentum for this band continue to build. Their hard work has delivered headlining bills at LA's Hotel Cafe and Chicago's renowned venues Hideout, Empty Bottle, Ravinia and Schuba's. Stolen Silver comes to Michigan with a new EP, "Sanctuary Sessions," recorded and filmed live in a 200-year-old gothic cathedral in central Wisconsin.

Rebecca Loebe has built a fervent grass-roots following performing an average of 150 concerts per year in over 40 states and 15 countries. Now join Rebecca as she celebrates the 10-year anniversary of her breakthrough album, "Mystery Prize." In this intimate, acoustic concert tour she'll revisit songs and stories from the album that spent ten weeks on the Americana Top 40 chart and launched her international touring career with a European record deal and an invitation to appear on the first season of NBC’s "The Voice."

The message that Brooklyn singer/songwriter Jesse Ruben has been spreading through his music is simple and direct: I can. You can. We Can. When Jesse originally wrote his song "We Can," he had just run the NYC Marathon and hoped to inspire people to start running. As it turns out, his message was meant to be much more universal. A few months after he released the track, a Vancouver elementary school reached out, saying they had been playing it to inspire their students. They asked Jesse to fly in and perform the song for their school, and so began "The We Can Project," which was inspired by the artist's own struggles with Lyme disease and now spreads across North America. Jesse began touring the country, visiting schools and helping students come up with personal goals and ways to give back to their community.

"Sounding like no other singer of her generation" (Allmusic.com), Mary Fahl is an expressive, emotional singer/songwriter who first achieved fame as lead singer and co-founder of the mid-1990s NYC-based chamber-pop group October Project. The hallmark of their sound was Mary Fahl's awe-inspiring power vocals over gorgeous melodies played with passion and sophistication. Since the band disbanded, Mary has released several compelling albums, including the fantastic reworking of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" for V2 Records. She has also written and performed songs for several major motion pictures, including the lead song ("Going Home") for the Civil War epic "Gods and Generals." Mary's elegant, cinematic songs draw on classical and world music sources, American art song, as well as thinking man's folk-pop she performs with an earthy, viscerally powerful contralto. Mary's popular Ark shows include October Project songs as well as her strong and growing corpus of originals.

They write and perform acoustic music for children and families, celebrating with their audiences the warmth, fun, and joy of family life. A Gemini concert is a kinetic event, filled with rousing singalongs, hand motion tunes, folk tales, and music from around the world. "If the Pied Piper had been twins, chances are he would have been Gemini," says the Detroit News. Since 1979 San and Laz have released numerous recordings for adults and children and families. These recordings have won a number of awards including ones from Parents' Choice Magazine, the American Library Association, the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA), and the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts.

Michael McDermott burst onto the scene in his early 20s with his exceptional debut, "620 W. Surf," and subsequently found himself touted as Rock’s Next Big Thing. The missteps and failures that followed, the collapse of an industry that once embraced him as its next sensation, are troubles and travails that either ruin a person completely, or force a change of attitude and staunch determination to gather one’s resolve to not only survive, but overcome. Michael's 11th studio album, "Out From Under," brims with richly autobiographical songs that mix stunning frankness with wicked, idiosyncratic humor. It’s the sound of a clear-eyed, dedicated artist, now a contented husband and father, giving in to his heart’s most urgent commands and trusting his instincts in ways he never thought possible.

With an earnest ability to create a delicate balance of harmony, melody, deep emotion and subtlety, Lee DeWyze’s depth as a songwriter call to mind some of his earliest influences like Simon and Garfunkel, Yusef Islam (Cat Stevens ) and Johnny Cash.

On Castles, his latest EP (10.25.19) which has garnered over 600k streams to date, this becomes clear to all who truly listen. There are no false notes in these three exquisite songs, each one a unique light in the constellation of his imagination. He sings quietly, as if whispering secrets. His lyrics and melodies mesmerize, cycling like nursery rhymes, somehow soothing while also sharpening our alertness that something unusual is going on here.

Over the last 10 years, Lee has released five albums, including his critically lauded Frames (Vanguard Records, 2013), which included the top 40 Billboard Hot AC hit “Fight.” In 2014, his song “Blackbird Song” was placed in the show “The Walking Dead.” After signing with Shanachie Records in 2016, Lee released the album Oil and Water, which hit Number One on the iTunes folk and singer/songwriter chart, followed by Paranoia (2018), which hit Number One on the Alternative chart. As the winner of American Idol Season 9 in 2010, he made his major-label debut with Live It Up (RCA)

Named by VH1 as one of the 30 greatest women in rock (we'd put her in an even smaller group), Rickie Lee Jones has been hard to classify ever since she came on the scene with the instant classic "Chuck E.'s in Love" in 1979. She's performed straight jazz, blues, synth pop, new wave rock, pop covers, trip-hop, gospel, ambitious singer-songwriter music, and more, putting her unique spin on each style. Each new round of music-making activity by Rickie Lee Jones is different. But a few things remain the same: she's at her best in an intimate space—like The Ark— and her live concerts have almost without exception been unforgettable experiences over her more than 30 years of performing. Rickie Lee Jones comes to Michigan with music from "Kicks," an upcoming collection presenting her unique and sophisticated interpretations of pop, rock, and jazz from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Brian Vander Ark is the lead singer of the Verve Pipe, which became one of Michigan's biggest rock bands of the last decade with songs like the number-one hit "The Freshmen." In 2001 he appeared as part of the band Blood Pollution in the Mark Wahlberg movie "Rock Star." Then he lit out on his own, selling all his possessions and rediscovering his love of performing. He has charisma to spare! On his studio albums, plus several more or less official live releases (an Ark show is a good place to pick up the more obscure items), Brian has taken up personal themes of family, love, and loss. The Grand Rapids Press hails Brian's way of "adroitly meshing acoustic grace with penetrating rock and pop power." Oh, and his name means "of The Ark" in Dutch. If you haven't seen this rock legend's solo show yet, what are you waiting for?

The East Pointers—fiddler/singer Tim Chaisson, banjoist Koady Chaisson and guitarist Jake Charron—write about real life, sketching out its joys and sorrows in vivid strokes. That palpable authenticity makes their instrumental tunes practically cartwheel and infuses their lyric-driven songs with poignancy. As a follow-up to 2015's internationally acclaimed, JUNO Award-winning debut "Secret Victory," their new "What We Leave Behind" shares stories previously unheard but framed by a familiar context. The album reflects on the traditions of Canadian Celtic music, where it comes from, and what it means to the people, but also strides in new directions. With a captivating balance between their traditional-sounding instrumental tunes, and catchy radio-ready songs, The East Pointers reach out with open arms to a wide range of listeners, inviting them to discover a new love of folk music. They come to Michigan with a new release, "Yours to Break."

Elliott BROOD is a three-piece, folk-rock/alt-country band based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Their brand of fuzzed-up roots music makes for a captivating and frenetic live performance. That energy has always translates to the band’s five acclaimed records. Their style has been called everything from "blackgrass" to "urban hillbilly," but those descriptions don't cover their unique approach. Elliott BROOD has toured extensively throughout Canada and internationally. They are known for their raw and energetic gigs and close interaction with their audience. Elliott Brood use dark elements to create illustrative songs. They often use actual historical events in their songwriting. The manage to connect the past with the present. Their lyrical content is dark, while the music is upbeat. Call it new Canadiana, or folk-punk, or whatever you like—this is something new from north of the border.

Panel Discussion
This session explores how contemporary artists continue to build on this dynamic legacy through musical works that extend the techniques, themes, and concerns of the Black art song into the twenty-first century.

Introduction: Stephen Michael Newby, Seattle Pacific University
Moderator: Uzee Brown, Morehouse College
Panelists: Britney Boykin, Spelman College; Adolphus Hailstork, Old Dominion University; Dave Ragland, and Darryl Taylor, University of California - Irvine

In 1916, concert artist, arranger, music editor, and composer, Harry T. Burleigh (1866-1949), published Jubilee Songs of the United States. Arranged for piano and voice, the songs represented a landmark as it established the solo Black art song as a distinct genre. Willis Patterson’s landmark collection, Anthology of Art Songs by Black American Composers was published in 1977. Its influence on the post-Civil Rights era pedagogy and performance of Black concert music has been inestimable. By building on Burleigh’s legacy, Patterson’s anthology has been central to establishing Black art songs as an important tradition of practice in American concert life on par with German Lieder and French Chanson.

Tales from the Briar Patch by Nkeiru Okoye and Carman Moore (librettist)
On February 27, 2020 SMTD presented a public workshop reading of “Bre’r Rabbit and the Tar Baby,” the first of three stories in Nkeiru Okoye and Carman Moore’s Tales from the Briar Patch, a new opera in development that is both family-friendly and fun. In this updated reboot of the traditional Bre’r Rabbit stories, Sister Sparrow, Sister Robin, and Madame Partridge retell the antics of Bre’r Rabbit and his nemesis Bre’r Fox. This public reading was the culmination of a workshop with SMTD singers and the composer. The FaceBook watch party will include commentary by the composer and cast members.

Introduction by Charles Lwanga, University of Michigan
Chair: Dwight Andrews, Emory University
Panelist: Bill Banfield, Berklee College of Music (Emeritus) Anthony Green and Ashleigh Gordon, Castle of Our Skins, and Marquese Carter, Murray State University.

The recent Black Lives Matter protests build on the historical momentum of earlier organized dissents such as the 1940s “Double V” campaign, the push for Civil Rights in the 1960s and, of course, the Black Power movement of the 1970s. Music has always accompanied these calls for equality in society.  What is often missing in public discourse, however, is the role of Black art music in these demands for justice. This panel takes on this question by exploring Willis Patterson’s model of forward thinking, on-the-ground musical activism as a paradigm for the future.  Radio broadcast of Willis Patterson the performer featuring his pre-recorded jazz and classical performances.

Journey through the Syrian-Pacific with your own personal dragoman Omar Offendum, along with his partner-in-thyme Thanks Joey. This Shamreeki sonic saga is equal parts nostalgic and futuristic. Featuring samples from some iconic Syrian films, and a dizzying dose of Damascene bilingualism, Lost In Translation is a celebratory love-letter to this very merry and hairy Arabian way of life in the California Califate of Los Shamgeles.

Molly Tuttle, says Paul Zollo of American Songwriter, "sings with the gentle authority of Gillian Welch, yet plays astoundingly fleet flat-picking guitar like Chet Atkins on superdrive." The first woman ever to win the International Bluegrass Music Association's Guitar Player of the Year award, Molly has been the talk of bluegrass circles over the past couple of years and is rapidly gaining fans from all the spheres of the roots music universe. She breaks free from bluegrass without breaking ties, singing and exploring what her six-string acoustic guitar can do. A rising star if there ever was one! Molly returns from the Folk Festival with her full-length album debut, "When You're Ready."

with Liz Ames, piano

The program will begin with the Pergolesi Sinfonia, familiar to most as material from Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite. Next will be Pete Meechan's "...a night devoid of stars", a piece based on an essay of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King on the futility of violence in society. This piece will be a multimedia presentation in partnership with Professor Audrey Bennett, University of Michigan's Diversity and Social Transformation Professor. The final piece before intermission will be Steven Juliani's "Mariana", a marvelous new work for tuba and piano.
Following intermission will be John Stevens' "Five Muses for Tuba and Piano". John is a sage within our discipline and as a tubist/composer, always writes compelling and effective music for the instrument. Next is a new work, "Nine Miniatures", originally for horn and piano by my friend James Naigus, my former colleague at the University of Georgia. It is a collection of short character pieces that are both evocative and charming. The program will close with the Tom McCaslin arrangement of Mike Garson's Variations on a Theme of Paganini. Yes, it is *that* theme, which in this work gets a whimsical jazz treatment.
