Former Folk Festival MC Vance Gilbert is a stalwart of Boston's vibrant songwriting scene, and he's opened for Arlo Guthrie, Anita Baker, and the late George Carlin. (How many songwriters can say that?) Vance's songs explore the experience of being nonwhite in America along with many other themes, and he's got a varied sense of rhythm and genre that allows him to go just about anywhere he wants to go musically. Vance's compositions, while frequently employing sophisticated melodies and harmonies that attest to his jazz roots, attest as well to his storyteller's craft. He even has a tune on a Grammy-nominated children’s album. How rounded is that? Come and renew acquaintances with a longtime Ark favorite!

In 2014, Ladysmith Black Mambazo—led by founder and leader Joseph Shabalala—celebrated more than 50 years of joyous and uplifting music. Within this music are the intricate rhythms and harmonies of their native South African musical traditions. The group borrows heavily from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya), which developed in the mines of South Africa, where black workers were taken by rail to work far away from their homes and their families. Assembled in the early 1960s in South Africa by Joseph, then a young farm boy turned factory worker, the group took the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Ladysmith is the name of Joseph’s hometown, about three hours west of Durban and three hours east of Johannesburg; Black being a reference to the oxen, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo being the Zulu word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group’s ability to "chop down" any singing rival who might challenge them. A radio broadcast in 1970 opened the door to their first record contract—the beginning of an ambitious discography that currently includes more than 50 recordings (including Paul Simon's "Graceland") and has earned three Grammy awards.

Joan Belgrave is Detroit’s most noted jazz singer. Her musical career began at age 3 when her parents would take her to house parties and put her up on a soapbox to sing with adult singers. Belgrave has performed at historic venues like Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Jazz Cafe at The Music Hall, Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, Fillmore Theatre, Orchestra Hall and Detroit Opera House. She has produced seven albums – five with her late husband, legendary Jazz trumpeter, Marcus Belgrave. She has also recorded tributes to Billie Holliday, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong. Our venue has changed, but this celebratory event that has become an Ann Arbor staple continues to thrive. This year's theme revolves around songs named for people, from the courtly Elizabeth to the ordinary Joe. As usual, pop, Hollywood and Broadway make up the fare, featuring soloists, as well as small and large ensembles. Join us for food, drinks, and fun at our annual fundraiser!

For more than two decades, the Vocal Arts Ensemble of Ann Arbor has maintained a tradition of professional excellence in the performance of fine choral music. Founded in 1992 as a small chamber group devoted to a cappella singing, the group has solidified its reputation as one of the premier chamber ensembles in the region, performing several concerts each season. VAE performs with a core group of about 24 and presents a highly varied repertoire, from Josquin to Bolcom. Benjamin Cohen, noted conductor, composer and playwright, became music director in 2000. VAE is a non-profit chamber ensemble run by an elected board of directors. The ensemble includes professional singers and instrumentalists, and enjoys a diverse membership drawn from the Ann Arbor area, with singers chosen on the basis of musicianship. VAE has been invited to perform throughout Michigan, collaborating with local artists and ensembles, and has been the featured choir with the Ann Arbor Symphony.

Celebrating more than ten years of getting people dancing all night, Scythian comes to town with a new live album, "Old Time Good Time," which shows what this immigrant road show can really do! Nashville's Music City Roots says Scythian is "what happens when rock star charisma meets Celtic dervish fiddling." Scythian's "Immigrant Road Show" consists of multi-instrumentalist Alexander Fedoryka, Nolan Ladewski on whistles and more, Danylo Fedoryka on rhythm guitar, Fritz McGirr on percussion, and Larissa Fedoryka on cello and bass.

Encores are traditionally the “dessert” of a concert, called upon after a meaty program of sonatas and more savory repertoire. Sometimes they are whimsical little things, charming and sweet, other times full of fire, flash and virtuosity.

Mark your calendars for ‪Wednesday, March 7th‬ when violinists from the studio of Danielle Belen join with the collaborative pianists from the studio of Martin Katz in a fun evening filled with encore pieces.

That palpable authenticity makes their instrumental tunes practically cartwheel and infuses their lyric-driven songs with poignancy. As a follow-up to 2015’s internationally acclaimed, JUNO Award-winning debut "Secret Victory," their new "What We Leave Behind" shares stories previously unheard but framed by a familiar context. The album reflects on the traditions of Canadian Celtic music, where it comes from, and what it means to the people, but also strides in new directions. With a captivating balance between their traditional-sounding instrumental tunes, and catchy radio-ready songs, The East Pointers reach out with open arms to a wide range of listeners, inviting them to discover a new love of folk music.

Pianist and vocalist Mr. B., a.k.a. Mark Lincoln Braun, is a rare link to the first generation of blues and boogie-woogie pianists. Mr. B learned directly from Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red and Blind John Davis. He has performed coast to coast and throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico and South America. Percussionist Pete Siers has an international reputation for his intensely physical yet dynamically sensitive drumming, attention to detail, and mastery of many different styles. He has played Carnegie Hall, has toured Europe several times, and is a long-time favorite at many jazz festivals across the US.

In the early 1960s in New York City, the electronic composer James Tenney held a series of seminars on the offices of the Something Else Press. Working by day in the sound department of Bell Labs in New Jersey, Tenney was tuned in to the emerging capabilities of FORTRAN, a programming language, for artists. Artists programmed early computer music, graphics and poetry using Bell Labs mainframes with Tenney's inspired guidance. One of these projects, by Fluxus artist Alison Knowles, is called the House of Dust, and resulted in a 2000 long sequence of iterative quatrains. The program for the house continues to inspire experiments in architecture, poetry, performance and sound. This lecture introduces the seminar and its many outcomes and the House of Dust and its many materials.

Richard Shindell is a New Yorker living in Argentina: a craftsman and a real wizard of song. He's played for coins in the Paris subway, and he's studied for the priesthood. His gift for profound storytelling songs drew him into the world of folk music. Richard Shindell champions the downtrodden, exalts the disaffected, skewers prejudice, war, and religious intolerance. He steps into and fully inhabits the various personalities his songs create—some of them female. In the words of No Depression, "Shindell tells great stories with an eye for critical detail while never losing sight of the big picture. He works a well-worn stretch of singer-songwriter pavement, but his wonderfully spiritual lyrical sense and intimate compositions ultimately distinguish him." The Valley Advocate in Massachusetts has called Richard Shindell "the thinking man's folk singer," and you're not going to hear better-crafted songs anywhere.

The California Guitar Trio plays progressive rock, surf music, jazz, blues, country, probably the definitive version of "Bohemian Rhapsody," and some traditional North African and Asian sounds for good measure. And did you hear them at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival a few years ago, playing the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, minus the voices but with pretty much everything else intact? Like most Californians, the three members of the California Guitar Trio all come from someplace else: Bert Lams is Belgian, Hideyo Moriya is from Japan (where the band has a strong following), and Paul Richards is from Salt Lake City. All three felt the call to push themselves to the limit by enrolling in Robert Fripp’s challenging Guitar Craft courses, where they first met in 1987. They went on to tour together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists before forming The California Guitar Trio in Los Angeles four years later. The CGT is a melding of diverse talents unlike anything you've heard before, and one you can't afford to miss!

Augusta Read Thomas, one of today’s most acclaimed composers, joins U-M composer Roshanne Etezady for conversation about music, art, and the creative process. “Thomas' music… fairly explodes with an extroverted boldness of utterance audiences and musicians alike find challenging yet immediate” (Chicago Tribune).

SMTD students perform some of Thomas’ most intimate chamber works. This program is offered in conjunction with the UMMA exhibition 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection,' which celebrates the pioneering gallerist, Gertrude Kasle (1917–2016), who was a key figure in the formation of Detroit’s contemporary art community in the 1960s and 70s. Kasle awakened local communities to the kind of avant-garde art she experienced in New York City and advocated for regional artists that she felt likewise broke with tradition.

The SMTD@UMMA performance series is generously supported by the Katherine Tuck Enrichment Fund and the Greg Hodes and Heidi Hertel Hodes—Partners in the Arts Endowment Fund.

Lead support for 'Exercising the Eye: The Gertrude Kasle Collection' is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, and the University of Michigan CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

Virtuoso harpists were at the center of early modern musical life in the Hispanic dominions on both sides of the Atlantic. They played for dances and accompanied singers, whether in churches or theaters. Harps were the principal basso continuo instruments into the eighteenth century. Early instruction books for harp printed in Spain are filled with notation for the popular dances of the day, dances whose patterns circulated widely. What can we learn from these dance forms for the working harp player, beyond the dances themselves? Largely unadorned in rhythm and melody, compared to dance settings for guitar and keyboard, they serve as the basis for other instrumental settings and as accompaniments for songs. They also inform us about both the social role of the harp and its effectiveness within the basso continuo ensemble.

Christa Patton, historical harpist and early wind specialist, has performed throughout the Americas, Europe, and Japan with many of today’s top early music ensembles, including Piffaro the Renaissance Band, Boston Camerata, The King’s Noyse, Folger Consort, Newberry Consort, Apollo’s Fire, Parthenia and ARTEK. As a baroque harpist specializing in 17th-century opera, Christa has performed with New York City Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Tafelmusik. She teaches on the faculty of Rutgers University and the Graduate Center at CUNY, and is musical director of the Baroque Opera Workshop at Queens College. Her artistry can be heard on the Lyrachord, Dorian, Navona and ATMA labels. Sponsored by the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments and the Department of Musicology.

As the phenomena of instant connection and the need for constant self-improvement further implant their tendrils into our culture, the ability to truly connect with each other and ourselves has begun to fade. As we all reach for our smartphones to gaze upon the manufactured perfection of the lives of those we admire, we lose sight of what makes our own lives important.

Nashville's Langhorne Slim interlaces this theme throughout his new album. "Everyone's searchin' for something better around every corner, but it's already right here," Langhorne says. "We're all born whole -- through livin' we fall apart..."

The songs on Langhorne Slim's newest album, Lost At Last Vol. 1, out November 10, 2017, challenge the idea of social rigidity: the attitude that there's a "correct" way for us to live and a side we should be on. He urges the world to see through the idea that by following that path and focusing only on fitting the mold, one will have lived a good life. He re-interprets the sound of the free-spirited yet vulnerable everyman heard on 2015's The Spirit Moves and brings forth anew the call for us to abandon "the fold" and re-connect with ourselves and each other.

Langhorne Slim is no stranger to the world of popular culture and commercial success. Lost At Last Vol. 1is his sixth full-length album; throughout his career he has been defined by reflective songwriting and passionate delivery. Slim's last album cycle alone garnered him his third appearance on Conan O'Brien's late-night show, as well as a feature on CBS Saturday Morning, and the highest charting debut of his career. O'Brien, a personal fan of Slim stated, "After one listen, I became an instant, almost obsessive fan." Slim has consistently toured on his own, and has appeared on extensive worldwide runs throughout his career with artists such as The Lumineers, The Avett Brothers, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Gregory Alan Isakov, Josh Ritter, The Devil Makes Three, Sara Watkins, and more. He's also appeared on many festival stages, such as Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Outside Lands, Lollapalooza, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.

Lost At Last Vol. 1 is a record that Langhorne wanted to do differently from the start. "Almost immediately after recording our last record, The Spirit Moves," Slim says, "I felt a deep desire to make another album. One that would take a step sideways in order to take a step forward; one that would be very personal and raw...in the making of this record, I made a deal with myself to trust my own voice and vision more than I ever have before, and to go willingly wherever it led."

The title alone reflects his need to pen a great wealth of songs, as if the thoughts and inspiration took on a life of their own and just needed to come out. Recorded over the span of around six months in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Catskill, NY, and clocking in at about 34 minutes, it's a short but intense listening experience. Several songs are under two or three minutes long, but they pack vivid imagery into concise packages in a way that shows a significant diversion from the songwriting on his previous records. Slim keeps his record-making in the family with this release; longtime band member Malachi DeLorenzo co-produced the record along with Kenny Siegal, and DeLorenzo also mixed several tracks in addition to playing drums on the record.

Slim reflects truths that we may or may not want to admit; in "Life is Confusing," he muses that "life is confusing, and people are insane." He stands resolute in the face of trial: ."..you could break my heart, but you'll never break me," he sings on "Never Break." He calls upon the listener during this time fraught with challenges to unplug from the trajectory our culture has deemed is "right" and find strength in our own vulnerability, in our own instincts. "We look to our phones, drugs, sex whatever to find ourselves when it's already right here," Slim says. These songs join in the rallying call for the wild ones in us all.

Organized By: Residential College

LIFE ON THE SWERVE: Once Upon a Time Called Now! is a show based on the performance methods of RHODESSA JONES & THE MEDEA PROJECT: Theater for Incarcerated Women/HIV Circle, which are rooted in autobiographical theater and Greek myth. Ms. Jones will be accompanied by renown musician/composer, Idris Ackamoor, and long - time Medea actress, Felicia Scaggs as they present a musically informed theatrical production. There will be a Q & A/Discussion with Rhodessa Jones and accompanying performers after the show. The Medea Project serves incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and HIV + women and community members, empowering them to heal their lives by connecting to the larger mythical fabric of the world's great stories linking their own stories to them. Some of the themes in the presentation relate to issues of HIV, addiction, prison, loss, and recovery. Myth involves the invocation of deities as well as primordial entities: these stories connect our individual lives to patterns of change, transformation, growth, and power.

THE MEDEA PROJECT is a production of Cultural Odyssey, which continues to develop original productions that demonstrate their vision of “ARTS AS SOCIAL ACTIVISM”. In 1989, on the basis of material developed while conducting classes at the San Francisco County Jail, Rhodessa Jones created “Big Butt Girls, Hard Headed Women”, a performance piece based on the lives of the incarcerated women she encountered. During the work’s creation, Jones and jail officials were made aware of issues that were specific to female inmates, such as guilt, depression, and self-loathing, which arose in response to feelings of failure in the face of community. These issues directly contribute to recidivism among female offenders. Based on this observation, Jones founded THE MEDEA PROJECT: THEATER FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN to explore whether an arts-based approach could help reduce the numbers of women returning to jail.

In 2008, THE MEDEA PROJECT joined forces with University of California San Francisco’s Women’s HIV Clinic to create theater that explores what it means to be living with the virus in the twenty-first century. For the past seven years, The Medea Project: HIV Circle has performed shows all around the United States, sharing the Truth and the stories of what it means to be female and infected or affected.

Over the last decade Massachusetts songwriter Stephen Kellogg has performed more than 1,500 concerts in more than a dozen countries, both solo and with a band. In 2013 he gave a TEDx Talk about job satisfaction. Recently on a tour of Europe, SK (as fans often referto him) made a detour to play the Middle East, Africa and an aircraft carrier for the Armed Forces. Upon returning to the USA, he started his annual lyric writing campaign to raise money and awareness in the fight against pediatric cancer. At first glance none of this has anything to do with his music, but Stephen would argue that "it is the whole story. The music I make is a reflection of how I spend my time and what I care deeply about." His Americana-tinged, sometimes folk, often rock, occasionally pop stylings can make Kellogg hard to define, and his recent four-part album "South, West, North, East" embraces the notion of genre-splitting to the fullest. CBS Radio has called Stephen Kellogg "the best live act you've never seen," and No Depression calls him "the best songwriter you're not listening to." We think it's time to change this situation. Stephen Kellogg appeared on the Saturday night bill at the 2018 Ann Arbor Folk Festival.

Organized By: Center for Armenian Studies

The evening will begin in the church sanctuary with the traditional Evening Service of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Yeregoyan Jamerkutyun, which serves as a preparation for both the night ahead and for the following liturgical day. It includes the variable Hampartsi Sharagan, a cycle of hymns associated with Psalm 120 (121), which begins with the incipit: “I lift up mine eyes to the mountains. From there my help will come.”

By offering an Evening Service, the participants in the workshop will be able to experience in action the liturgical music that many of the papers and presentations address the day before. The Evening Service will be offered by the priests and deacons of the St. John Armenian Church, with the pastor Fr. Aren Jebejian presiding, and participation by the choir director Dn. Rubik Mailian and guest vocalist Dr. Aram Kerovpyan.

After the Evening Service there will be a short concert and musical description by the renowned Armenian musician, clarinetist Hachig Kazarian. Mr. Kazarian is a Julliard-trained musician with a Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology. He led the popular band the “Hye Tones” for many years, and has played with John Berberian and Richard Hagopian, among others. Mr. Kazarian will perform several Armenian songs, including a demonstration of a “folk” song with musical patterns similar to the Hamparsi Sharagan.

The evening will conclude with a round-table discussion on the state of Armenian music and the challenges of teaching various genres of Armenian music in the Diaspora. Participants will include Dr. Aram Kerovpyan, Dn. Rubik Mailian, and Hachig Kazarian.

This puts the audience in total control. You are able to travel through the building and choose what to see and when! It's a chance to experience classic works beside new ones, all challenging and stretching the idea of exactly what theatre can be. This year's program contains everything from movement pieces to new student-written scenes, musical snippets to monologue cycles!

Minnesota-born songwriter Alice Peacock writes highly personal material that takes inspiration from the introspective women of a generation ago: Joni Mitchell and Carole King. Her recent album "Love Remains" is a timely and timeless collection of novellas that brings to mind the joy simple things and the prospect of a better world. Alice's abiding belief in the power of music is a constant. “Can music change the world?/ Yeah, I think it can,” she sings in “Forgiveness,” and she has a story to back it up. Boston's Anne Heaton has amassed awards and praise from critics, fellow artists, and fans with her songs that are by turns "tender, barbed, and spiritual" (Washington Post). Her graceful, vulnerable, and sometimes humorous pop-folk songs have captured audience imaginations for over a decade. Anne has opened for Jewel and played the Sundance Film Festival and Lilith Fair), and she was a featured artist on the New York Times Music Podcast. Anne's latest album is "Dora," a collaborative group of poems-turned-songs with poet Claire Clube.

Wouldn’t it be nice if “getting the notes right” was all it took to deliver communicative, personal, spontaneous-seeming performances? Drawn, in part, from the thinking and writings of noted drama pedagogue and practitioner Konstantin Stanislavsky, and with applications to piano literature, we consider other roles a performer plays and how to develop them through thoughtful teaching.

Musicologist Annegret Fauser of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has won two major awards for her book, Sounds of War: Music in the United States during World War II. Fauser is the Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of Music and an adjunct professor of women’s and gender studies in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on music of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in particular that of France and the United States. Tim Carter, the David G. Frey Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has written prolifically about music in early modern Italy; Mozart’s Italian operas; and American musical theatre. He is particularly interested in honing historical, analytical, and critical tools to elucidate problematic works that forge new musical languages; the careful gathering and analysis of sources and documentary evidence; the elucidation of text–music relationships, with particular reference to the influence of poetic structures on musical form and process; and the embedding of contemporary performances (and performers) within surviving scores and the intertextual and performative issues that arise.

The music of Savannah's Velvet Caravan is rooted in gypsy jazz/gypsy swing and Latin swing styles. This high-energy, acoustic-based quintet of guitar, violin, standup bass, percussion and keyboards (including accordion) has emerged as one of the shining lights of Savannah’s burgeoning music scene. This band plays upbeat tunes from all over the world with thunderous virtuosity and relentless sense of humor. Bringing together the eclectic sounds are a motley crew of super-talented musicians from Venezuela, the Great Northwest, the heartland, the Atlantic Northeast and Georgia's Coastal Empire. South Carolina's Beaufort Gazette calls their sound "sophisticated, yet fun and organic."

Tennessee-born, Minneapolis-based Chastity Brown grew up surrounded by country and soul music. In the full gospel church of her childhood, she played saxophone and drums and found her singing voice and a passion for music. Chastity has been called a banjo-playing soul singer and "a rocking, rolling encyclopedia of roots music." She’s been featured on CMT and NPR's "Favorite Sessions, and has been the subject of profiles in Paste and the Times of London, among others. For much of 2016, she toured alongside Ani DiFranco, and she opened for Ani at the Michigan Theater in April of that year. She's an artist who can plumb the depths of sadness in a single note, then release it in the very next breath, mergine folk, pop and, soul in a whole new way on her Red House–label debut, "Silhouette of Sirens," with a a poet’s lyrical ear and a soul-laid-bare quality. Back from the 2018 Ann Arbor Folk Festival, Chastity Brown is a major new figure on the singer-songwriter scene.

One of the best live acts to come out of Ireland in recent years is the multi-awarded winning We Banjo 3. With a seven-time all-Ireland banjo champ, a four-time banjo champ, and another member who is an all-Ireland champ on both fiddle and bodhran, and with a passionate lead vocalist like a young Springsteen adopted by the Chieftains, the result is unforgettable. On both sides of the Atlantic the word is out about this group! WB3 performed at the “Friends of Ireland” luncheon on Capital Hill attended by House Speaker Paul Ryan, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, and has headlined virtually every major U.S .Celtic fest for several years in a row. With a strong bluegrass influence, the band is rapidly gaining favor in the worlds of bluegrass and Americana as well, as evidenced by their invites to Merlefest, ROMP Fest, Sisters Folk Fest, Old Settlers Fest, Four Corners Fest and more! Scots band Talisk, recent winners of the BBC Young Folk Award, is special guest.

Gemini is the much-loved duo of Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits. They've been performing since 1973 and are now playing music for the third—or is it fourth?—generation of young fans and families. They write and perform acoustic music for children and families, celebrating with their audiences the warmth, fun, and joy of family life. A Gemini concert is a kinetic event, filled with rousing singalongs, hand motion tunes, folk tales, and music from around the world. "If the Pied Piper had been twins, chances are he would have been Gemini," says the Detroit News. Since 1979 San and Laz have released numerous recordings for adults and children and families. These recordings have won a number of awards including ones from Parents' Choice Magazine, the American Library Association, the National Parenting Publications (NAPPA), and the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts

While the grand palaces of Central Java's traditional court cities have long functioned as centers for classical performing arts, the festive street tents under which urban dwellers gather for family and communal ceremonies foster ever-changing popular traditions of Javanese music and dance. Two highly renowned artist-scholars from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts lead the UM student gamelan ensemble in a concert that will highlight contrasts and continuities between court and popular gamelan music and Javanese dance styles. The concert will also feature the premiere performance of "There's also fog where I come from" by UM Composer-in-Residence for Gamelan Conner Singh VanderBeek.

He communicates urgently but with strict control. He is alert to every manner of nuance and at every dynamic level his tone flatters the ear.”

Here are two bands that offer original music with a rock sound. Known for their progressive songwriting and energetic live performances, Mo Lowda & The Humble began in the beer-soaked basements of Philadelphia. Following the release of their first full-length, "Curse the Weather, the band started to hit the road. They've played shows throughout the country, including those at summer festivals such as Firefly. The band's 2016 sophomore release, "Act Accordingly," was a short and sweet embodiment of the band's natural progression, and they're coming to Michigan with a new release on the way. Quiet Hollers formed in Louisville around the songwriting of singer/guitarist Shadwick Wilde, who originally formed the group with the idea of playing only one show—the CD release of his solo effort, "Unforgivable Things," in 2010. The group’s debut, I Am the Morning, followed in 2013. Quiet Hollers signed with the indie label SonaBLAST! for their third album, "Amen Breaks." The album draws parallels between the modern entertainment landscape and the cultural crossover of the 1970s– another decade marred by division, political corruption, and terrorist bombs. Their shape-shifting palate makes use of orchestral strings and brass, vintage drum-machines and samples (including the Amen Break, the most sampled piece of music in history). "Amen Breaks" explores themes of spirituality, sexuality, and mental illness.

Altan, named for Loch Altan in Ireland's County Donegal, has arguably had a wider impact on audiences over the last 30 years than any other traditional Irish band. Their dynamic and warm live performances mix the most touching old Irish songs with hard-hitting reels and jigs, and the band members' interest in and sheer enjoyment of each other musically is apparent even to audience members new to the Irish tradition. For the Irish music enthusiast, Altan has a treasure trove of brilliant moves to offer: the mix of sounds from Donegal with outside influences, the sheer virtuosity of the players, the beauty, delicate singing, and down-to-earth charm of singer and fiddler Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh. Anywhere they go, a concert by Altan is the Irish music event of the year. Popmatters calls the band's latest album, "The Widening Gyre," "a defining moment for Altan."

Maine Inside Out (MIO) artists facilitate the creation of original theater to engage the community in dialogue about issues related to incarceration. Chiara Libertore, one of Professor Emeritus William “Buzz” Alexander’s first students (LSA English Language and Literature) in what would become the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP), co-founded the MIO non-profit in 2007. MIO provides year round voluntary theater workshops for more than half of the young people at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine. Its reintegration program for newly-released Maine Inside Out participants includes weekly community groups, mentoring, and transitional employment opportunities for youth in three Maine communities that incarcerate the highest number of young people. MIO’s transformative justice curriculum includes a new original production created by young adult artists debuting in 2017. Join us for a public performance and dialogue in the Residential College’s Keene Theater.
