The human body is made of more than 37 trillion cells. Most of them need to be replaced every couple of months, weeks, or sometimes in the course of only a few days. Our cells grow and divide constantly to get this massive job done. But how do cells replicate themselves? How do things move in, out, and around the cell, and into new cells? Join us as we explore how our bodies carry out this massive process. We will learn about cell structure and division and observe cells up-close and in action!

Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

In celebration of UMMA’s new Power Family Program for Inuit Art, the Museum presents a special exhibition of two incredible, intertwining stories. One traces the development of contemporary Inuit art in the Canadian Arctic from the 1950s to the present. The other relates the fascinating story of the Power family’s important role in supporting and promoting Inuit art from the outset, bringing public attention to its artistic strength and cultural importance. The Power family’s collection is unusual in its strong representation of early contemporary carvings, incised drawings on ivory and antler, soapstone sculptures, and prints that evolved as Inuit artists developed their own artistic voices and responded creatively to their changing world.

This exhibition inaugurates the Power Family Program for Inuit Art, established in 2018 through the generosity of Philip and Kathy Power.

Abstract: Bipolar disorder is characterized by recurrent mania and depressions. It is an illness of dynamic states and pathological changes in energy, emotion, and cognitions. The Prechter Bipolar Program studies the course and outcome of bipolar disorder from several vantage points and identifies 7 phenotypic sub-classes that contribute to the observed phenotype in a pluralistic manner. The classes include: disease, cognitive neuroscience (neuropsychology), psychology (personality), motivated behaviors, sleep and circadian, life story, and course / outcomes. Each of the phenotype sub-classes defines a scientific edge of research, each with contributions from several independent disciplines. The Prechter Bipolar Longitudinal Cohort consists over 1350 participants with clinical and biological data that will be available for collaborative research projects.

Abstract:
In the last few years, the field of psychology has been challenged with a crisis in the rigor and reproducibility of science. The focus of these issues has primarily been in social, cognitive, and cognitive neuroscience psychology, however, the area of developmental research is not immune to these issues. This presentation provides an overview of the “replication crisis” and the choices made by researchers that are often not noted in methods, thus making the replication of studies more difficult. In this review, we discuss issues of researcher flexibility in the data design and selection of sample size, collection, and analysis stages of research. In each of these areas, we address examples of bias and how developmental researchers can address these issues in their own research.

UM Psychology Community Talk: Understanding Memory: How it Works and How to Improve it (September 23, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64329 64329-16316438@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 23, 2019 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Exploring the Mind

Abstract: Human beings store away huge quantities of information in memory. We remember countless facts about the world (e.g., birds have wings, 2+2=4, there are 26 letters in the alphabet) as well specific information about our own lives (e.g., what we had for lunch, where we went for our last vacation, our first kiss). How does that work? How do we store information away into memory and then retrieve exactly the information we need minutes, days, or even years later? Conversely, why do we so often forget someone’s name or where we put our keys? And perhaps most importantly, is there anything we can do to improve our memory and keep it sharp? In this talk, we’ll dive into the psychological and neural mechanisms that underlie our amazing ability to remember. And we’ll also discuss ways to maximize our memory by applying techniques that have been scientifically demonstrated to improve retention.

Bio: Professor Thad A. Polk is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. His research combines functional imaging of the human brain with computational modeling and behavioral methods to investigate the neural architecture underlying cognition. Some of his major projects have investigated changes in neural representations as we age, contributions of nature versus nurture to neural organization and differences in the brains of smokers who quit compared with those who do not. Dr. Polk has taught well over 6,000 UM students over the past 20 years and has developed three neuroscience courses aimed at the general public for The Great Courses (The Addictive Brain, The Aging Brain, The Learning Brain). In 2012 Princeton Review included him on its list of the Best 300 Professors in the U.S.

Humans are a highly cooperative species. Over the last decades, research has heavily focused on the psychological underpinnings of human cooperation as well as their phylogenetic origins. One central approach in this regard has been to study chimpanzees, one of our two closest evolutionary relatives. Numerous findings have led to the view that, compared to humans, chimpanzees are substantially less willing to provide material benefits to conspecifics (especially when this comes at a personal cost) and largely do not take others’ mental states into account for cooperative purposes. In my talk, I will present a series of experimental studies that offer two amendments to this view. Unlike previously assumed, chimpanzees do seem motivated to benefit others materially but only after receiving their assistance. Moreover, chimpanzees do show the ability to adjust their actions in response to others’ mental states in the context of mutualistic cooperation. Together, these findings provide a better understanding of the similarities and differences between the psychological mechanisms underlying chimpanzee and human cooperation.

Social Area Brown Bag Talk - Information Targeting Increases the Weight of Stigma: Leveraging Relevance Backfires When Recipients Feel Judged (September 25, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67118 67118-16803019@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 25, 2019 12:00pm
Location: East Hall
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Although relevance is viewed as a panacea for persuasion, there may be contexts in which attempts to leverage relevance backfire. Across two experiments, we investigated conditions under which signaling personal relevance, via targeting information to audiences based on identities, backfires. In particular, we assessed how activation of personal characteristics (e.g., identities, health goals, and both identities and goals), as well as context cues (e.g., time of year), impact persuasion. Because people with higher body mass indexes (BMIs) are frequently targets of weight stigma, particularly within health contexts, we expected that perceiving relevance based on weight identities would elicit identity threat and subsequently inhibit persuasion for people with higher, versus lower, BMIs. Across studies, participants were told they received information about obesity due to chance (control condition), or after providing their demographics (e.g., weight status; Studies 1–2), health goals (Study 2), or demographics and goals (Study 2). Findings revealed that, particularly for participants with higher BMIs, being targeted to receive information about obesity and obesity-related illness increased perceived relevance among recipients, which predicted increases in irritation and self-conscious emotions. Negative emotional responding produced heterogenous, but primarily deleterious, effects on self-efficacy and behavioral intentions to engage in healthy behavior because recipients felt unfairly judged (Study 2). Study 2 determined that targeting on goals and changes in context (e.g., stronger beliefs that change is possible at New Year's) decreased the link between perceived relevance and feeling judged. Collectively, this work shows that leveraging message relevance may inhibit persuasion for target audiences when they feel unfairly judged.

This work examines two innovative technologies in high-power electric propulsion – magnetic shielding and nesting channels. Magnetic shielding increases the lifetime of Hall thrusters by three orders of magnitude, while nested Hall thrusters allow these devices to be scaled to the very high powers necessary for Mars missions. Despite these advancements, there remain open questions about the exact implications on Hall thruster operation. These open questions pose large risks for transitioning the thrusters to flight. One of the most critical is how neutral gas particles emanating from various sources influence the overall performance and lifetime of these thrusters. There exist several sources of neutrals such as the background facility pressure, the cathode, and adjacent channels on nested Hall thrusters. As such, we investigate here the neutral density impacts on the operation of high-power Hall thrusters. In summary, we show that neutrals shift and compress the plasma, which leads to an increase thrust and efficiency with higher neutral density. Additionally, we find that these neutrals can change the near-wall ion behavior, which affects the erosion and overall lifetime. Ultimately, we have improved our understanding of the mechanisms behind neutral impacts on the performance and lifetime of magnetically shielded and nested Hall thrusters.

Abstract
For many years now, my students and I have developed several solutions to enable cost-effective deployments in the cloud of low-latency highly-available services. Based on this work, in this talk, my goals are two-fold.

First, I will give an overview of how some of my group's work, as well as other related research from computer science researchers, can be leveraged to enable cloud-driven control of manufacturing devices, i.e., how CS research can be used for improved manufacturing.

Second, in the context of smart manufacturing, I will describe the challenges in applying the approaches traditionally used by computer science researchers. In particular, I will argue that many of the principles that underlie use of the cloud will need to be rethought, and the domain of smart manufacturing presents an exciting new frontier for distributed systems research. I will then show some preliminary work done in collaboration with Prof. Okwudire on the application of cloud computing to the control of manufacturing machines.

Copies and Invention in East Asia (September 29, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64052 64052-16109196@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, September 29, 2019 2:00pm

Far from being frowned upon as uncreative, in China, Korea, and Japan, copying has long been considered a valuable practice. Through works of art spanning ancient to contemporary times, Copies and Invention in East Asia challenges our understanding of originality, and presents copying as an act of imaginative interpretation. The exhibition includes burial goods that conjure a world for the deceased; Buddhist sculptures produced in multiples to amplify religious experience and meaning; paintings in which a master’s brushstrokes are faithfully duplicated as a way of shaping the self; and contemporary works that address multiplicity and duplication in the modern world. A museum docent will interpret the complex ways that Asian artists have produced multiple artworks through time.

Lead support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Nam Center for Korean Studies, School of Information, and College of Engineering. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Fabrication Studio at the Duderstadt Center, Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, and SeeMeCNC 3D Printers.

Developmental Brown Bag: Introducing elevation to the study of children’s developing prosociality (September 30, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65644 65644-16627846@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 30, 2019 12:00pm
Location: East Hall
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Abstract:
Social constructivism posits that helping behaviour emerges through young children’s interactions with others. This would result in a social motivation whereby children help others because they want to provide the help themselves. However, in a series of studies we find better support for an alternative explanation of children’s helping behaviour, one that emphasizes their prosocial motivation to maintain cooperative relationships with others, including their peers. To this end we studied a prosocial emotion that has thus far received little attention in the developmental literature: elevation. The central finding is that young children express positive emotions when seeing others being helped and more specifically when seeing others get the help they deserve. The pattern from a series of studies suggests that young children’s prosocial emotions are regulated not only by concern for their personal gain or by sympathy for others, but reflect an emerging sense of deservingness as determined by social comparison.

Studying the proximate mechanisms of social behaviour poses unique methodological and theoretical challenges. In a series of studies, we used pupillometry to design experimental paradigms that allow us to investigate physiological changes in the context of both children’s and chimpanzees’ social interactions. We applied these methods to study the underlying motivation of both prosocial behaviour and so-called inequity aversion. In young children, we have further included measures of positive emotions using motion sensor technology. Together, our results suggest that while specific social behaviours, such as helping, are a cross-species phenomenon among Great Apes, the underlying motivation may be distinctly different between humans and chimpanzees.

Social Area Brown Bag Talk - The devils we know and love: How relationships bias moral reasoning (October 2, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67117 67117-16803018@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 12:00pm

Consider the following scenario—you witness your friend steal a TV and are approached by a police officer asking whether you saw anything. How would you respond? Would you protect or condemn your friend? What makes dilemmas like these so vexing is that they pit two fundamental drives against one another: protecting those we love versus abiding by universal rules. Here we demonstrate that when people are presented with scenarios forcing them to decide whether to protect or condemn the perpetrators of crimes, they demonstrate an extremely strong bias to protect close (vs. distant) others, and the size the of this effect increases along with the severity of the crime they observe. Moreover, using event-related potentials (ERPs) we show that the amplitude of the P300, an early neural component occurring around 300ms that is sensitive to expectancy violations, was greater when people thought about close (vs. distant) others committing crimes and predicted people’s decisions to protect versus condemn perpetrators’ behaviors. However, we show that the behavioral bias toward close others is attenuated by a brief self-distancing manipulation. Preliminary cross-cultural work shows that the bias is also present but attenuated among a Japanese sample, suggesting that cultural factors may modulate the balance between loyalty and justice. These findings underscore the importance of studying the role of close relationships in moral reasoning.

Brief Abstract: Normal aging is typically associated with a pervasive decline in cognitive, motor and sensory function even in absence of pathology. Nevertheless, there are large individual differences in these declines: some older adults experience severe cognitive declines that impact their daily living and often are early markers of pathology, while others experience only mild impairments and lead a relatively healthy life. Understanding the neural bases of individual differences during aging is imperative in designing future interventions to slow, or even reverse some age-related cognitive impairments. My talk will focus on the cause and consequences of two such neural changes: age-related decline in neural distinctiveness and brain signal variability.

Funded by the National Science Foundation.

Abstraction, Color, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s (October 6, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64118 64118-16163568@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 6, 2019 2:00pm

In the midst of the political and cultural upheavals of the 60s and 70s, artists, critics, and the public grappled with the relationship between art, politics, race, and feminism. During these decades, the notion that abstraction was a purely formal and American art form, concerned only with timeless themes disconnected from the present, was met with increased skepticism. Women artists and artists of color began to actively and assertively explore abstraction’s possibilities. The artworks in Abstraction, Color, and Politics: The 1960s and 1970s demonstrate both radical and disarming changes in how artists worked and what they thought their art was about. Their new formal and intellectual strategies—seen here across large-scale and miniature work—dramatically transformed the practice of abstraction in the 1960s and 1970s in a politically shifting American landscape.

Abstract: While urges to eat are regulated by hunger, satiety, and energy demand, they are also strongly influenced by sights, sounds, and smells that are associated with food (food cues). Dr. Ferrario’s lab examines the neurobiological mechanisms of cue-triggered food craving and how these processes are influenced by consumption of sugary, fatty, “junk-food” diets and individual susceptibility to obesity. Her studies use a variety of approaches in preclinical models including behavior, biochemistry, and slice electrophysiology. In her talk, she will discuss how alterations in excitatory transmission within the brain's reward pathway influence cue-triggered food seeking behavior, and the relationship of these neurobehavioral alterations to aberrant vs. normative reward-seeking behaviors that contribute to obesity.

How an art museum welcomes its 21st-century public is the subject of new works by students in the Stamps School of Art and Design's Unfashionable wearable art course. Unfashionable artworks consider the interconnections between UMMA's recent renovations—the reinstallation of the Apse with its groupings of art and "living room spaces" and the opening of the UMMA Café with its espresso drinks and baby kale salad—and what these spaces say about the art institution's valuation of distance and proximity, secularity and holiness, experiences of art in the digital age, and the consumption of culture. From 11:30am to 12:45pm on Wednesday, October 9, performers in wearable sculptures will further activate the newly altered spaces of the UMMA Café and Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Apse.

In the U.S. today, racial segregation remains rampant in neighborhoods, schools, and even the workplace. Given the persistent inequity in terms of both race and social class in the U.S., my research utilizes perspectives from developmental, social, and cultural psychology to examine how features of our social and cultural contexts (e.g., racially segregated neighborhoods and classrooms) influence individuals’ thoughts and feelings about intergroup relations, and how these psychological outcomes in turn reify existing inequities. In this talk, I will examine how racial segregation shapes both perceptions of others’ racial attitudes throughout development. In addition, I discuss how these perceptions may be used to justify and ultimately perpetuate the persistence of racial segregation. By bringing to light these processes, we can better understand why change is more difficult and slow than expected.

Venkat Raman
Professor, Department of Aerospace Engineering
University of Michigan

Ever since the start of the microprocessor and high performance computing revolution more than four decades ago, supercomputing and computational propulsion have remained indistinguishable. The overall thinking was that scientific exploration is the path to economic prosperity, and applying the emerging high performance computing capability to a problem of national interest - aircraft propulsion - will provide an edge in an increasingly competitive environment. The relationship was strengthened when the US signed (but did not ratify) the comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty (CTBT). The methods and tools needed to ensure stockpile readiness could be directly tested using computational propulsion as a surrogate problem. Leading OEMs (P&W, GE, Rolls Royce) seized this opportunity, leading to transformative design processes, the impact of which is seen in the phenomenal advances in aircraft engine performance in the last three decades.

In the last decade, there has been a change in the governing philosophy for computing. It is now seen that computing should support industrial leadership, which is deemed the path for economic success. While this may seem abstract, the effect is that computing is seen as a way to accelerate decision making in the industrial context. Driven by Silicon Valley’s increasing dominance over the use of computations, emerging supercomputing architectures are geared towards processing large volumes of data. This has important implications for computational propulsion. For instance, the path towards computations-based certification of alternative fuels may no longer be possible. At the same time, new opportunities have emerged. This talk discusses the nuances of this new era of supercomputing and its role in computational sciences.

This talk is based on a recent article by the speaker: “Emerging Trends in Numerical Simulation of Combustion Systems”, Hassanaly and Raman, Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, Volume 37, Issue 2, 2019, Pages 2073-2089.

About the speaker...
Venkat Raman received his PhD from Iowa State University in 2003 in the department of chemical engineering. He was a NASA/Center for Turbulence Research Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University from 2003-2004, and a research associate in the Center for Integrated Turbulence Simulations from 2004-2005.

From 2005-2014, he was on the faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department at The University of Texas at Austin, initially as an assistant professor (2005-2011) and later as tenured associate professor (2011-2014).

Raman received an NSF CAREER award in 2008, a distinguished paper award at the International Combustion Symposium in 2013, and the Moncrief Grand Challenge Award in 2013. He held the Eli. H and Ramona Thornton Centennial Fellow in Engineering at UT Austin from 2013-2014.

Abstract: A Ph.D. is preparation for the professoriate in most disciplines, but many people with a Ph.D. find careers outside of academia. Data science is one of the wide range of non-academic career paths. Data science leverages skills trained in scientific disciplines including data interpretation, programming, and statistics to ask and answer industry-relevant questions. At Facebook, we rely on our data scientists to help us decide how to create products that ‘“give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.”

Join us in the Science Forum for 15-20 minute engaging science demonstrations that will help you see the world around you in a whole new way. Demonstrations are appropriate for visitors ages 5 and above.

Funded by the National Science Foundation.

Take Your Pick: Collecting Found Photographs (October 13, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64116 64116-16163566@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 13, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Join a docent on a journey through time and memory, as you explore over 1,000 found photographs together. Take Your Pick invites you—the Museum’s visitors—to select photographs for our permanent collection. What belongs in a permanent collection, and why? Who and what should be represented, and how should we decide? This exhibition considers these questions in regard to 1,000 amateur photographs on loan from the private collection of Peter J. Cohen, who has gathered more than 60,000 snapshots while exploring flea markets in the United States and Europe over two decades. The images he has collected depict all aspects of daily life and reveal the dynamic histories of amateur photography. Such pictures have particular significance in the current digital age, when it is much less common to make physical copies of personal photographs. They constitute important artifacts of twentieth-century visual culture and precedents for the photographs we still make today. You are invited to make your voice heard in the selection process by voting for the photographs that resonate most with you!

Support for this exhibition is provided by Cecilia and Mark Vonderheide and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Department of Film, Television, and Media, and Department of American Culture.

Location: East Hall
Organized By: Department of Psychology

With an increasing amount of data available online, we are now able to examine political information and behaviors through a new lens. In this talk, I will cover two studies that underline this promise for the study of news producers and citizens.

First, focusing on the news media, I will characterize the spread of fake news during the 2016 Presidential elections. Through the use of heterogenous data, I will examine the interplay between news media production and consumption, social media behavior, and the information the electorate retained about the presidential candidates leading up to the election. Second, turning to the citizens, I will examine how individuals conform to community norms in political discussions. Past research identifies many processes that contribute to maintaining stable norms, including self-selection, pre-entry learning, post-entry learning, and retention. What is the relative importance of these processes? I will answer this question through an analysis of political subreddits on Reddit with stable and distinctive toxicity levels.

CM Burroughs Poetry Reading & Book Signing (October 17, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64366 64366-16332365@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 17, 2019 5:30pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: Zell Visiting Writers Series

CM Burroughs’ book of poems, The Vital System (Tupelo Press), illuminates what she calls "the protective capability of violence.” In the words of renowned French feminist scholar Hélène Cixous: “Burroughs delves into the ultra-sensitive roots of being; where sufferings and desires take shape, she gathers each breath as yet unheard and leads it to speech.”

Burroughs is an Associate Professor of Poetry at Columbia College Chicago. She has been awarded fellowships and grants from Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, Djerassi Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Cave Canem Foundation. She has received commissions from the Studio Museum of Harlem and the Warhol Museum to create poetry in response to art installations.

Her poetry has appeared in journals and anthologies including Poetry, Callaloo, jubilat, Ploughshares, VOLT, and Best American Experimental Writing 2015. Her second book, Master Suffering, will be published by Tupelo Press in 2020.

This event is free and open to the public. Onsite book sales will be provided by Literati Bookstore.

The Zell Visiting Writers Series brings outstanding writers to campus each semester. UMMA is pleased to be the site for most of these events. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (BA ’64, LLDHon ’13). For more information, please visit the Zell Visiting Writers Program webpage: https://lsa.umich.edu/writers

For any questions about the event or to share accommodation needs, please email asbates@umich.edu-- we are eager to help ensure that this event is inclusive to you. Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

The reinstallation of UMMA’s Apse, called “Collection Ensemble” highlights the breadth and variety of the Museum’s collection and juxtaposes works of art from different artists, periods, areas, and media. The installation is organized around a very large photograph of a Baroque church by Candida Höfer. From this centerpiece, the works of art are grouped in scenes or distinctive vignettes comprised of a broad mix of American, European, African, and Asian art from across media. The reinstallation doesn’t adhere to either chronological or geographic boundaries. Curated by Vera Grant, UMMA’s Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Of this installation, she says: “The exhibition recasts the role of the collection as an active, creative, sometimes startling source of material and ideas, open for debate and interpretation. The arrangements remind us that works of art can change in meaning and affect when placed in new contexts.” Join an docent to explore and interpret this exciting new project.

Developmental Brown Bag: Neurobiological Mechanisms Linking Poverty to Youth Socioemotional Development (October 21, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65645 65645-16627847@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 21, 2019 12:00pm

Abstract:
Nearly 20% of children in the United States live below the federal poverty line. Growing up in impoverished contexts is associated with myriad psychosocial adversities, all of which dramatically increase risk for psychopathology across the lifespan. One proposed mechanism by which environmental stress becomes biologically-embedded to predict maladaptive developmental outcomes is via alterations in brain function. In this practice job talk, I will present my research program linking poverty and poverty-related adversities to corticolimbic function during socioemotional processing. Using harsh parenting and neighborhood disadvantage as examples, I show that developmental timing is an important consideration for elucidating the effects of childhood adversity on corticolimbic development. Additionally, in an application of the model of Differential Susceptibility, I will highlight how amygdala reactivity during face processing may serve as a plasticity marker by moderating behavioral responses to socioeconomic resources.

The U-M Museum Studies Department is pleased to present William S. Pretzer, Senior Curator of History, Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture opened on the National Mall in Washington, DC, in September 2016.  More than six million individuals have visited the museum in its first three years of operation.

The Presidential Commission created in 2001 directed the museum to “give voice to the centrality of the African American experience and make it possible for all people to understand the depth, complexity, and promise of the American experience.”

From the beginning, Founding Director Lonnie G. Bunch III and his staff heeded the exhortation of historian John Hope Franklin, chair of the museum’s Scholarly Advisory Committee, “to tell the unvarnished truth.” That principle energized an exhibition plan informed by public conversations, a collecting program relying on individual and family legacies, a narrative format balancing the personal with the social, and a funding strategy emphasizing the “African American experience as the lens through which we understand what it is to be American.”

This presentation demonstrates the impact of these foundational principles and strategies through an illustrated tour of the inaugural exhibitions.

This program is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Social Area Brown Bag Talk: It’s risky, therefore I do it; Counterfinality as a source of perceived instrumentality of extreme behavior as means to goals (October 23, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67137 67137-16805203@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 12:00pm
Location: East Hall
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Why do people choose extreme behaviors as opposed to finding alternative means to fulfill their goals? I propose that extreme behaviors may be perceived as particularly instrumental to certain goals because of their potential negative consequences. This possibility is suggested by the principle of counterfinality whereby, a means is perceived as particularly instrumental to one’s goals to the extent to which it is detrimental to alternative goals. In line with this notion, we show that: 1) extreme behavior is more likely when its negative consequences are salient; 2) people who are more concerned with finding the “best” means to fulfill their goals (i.e. people high in a regulatory mode characterized by assessment) are more likely to engage in extreme behavior to fulfill relevant goals; 3) accessbility of relevant goals increases the likelihood of engagement in extreme behaviors by increasing their perceived riskiness and therefore their perceived instrumentality.

George Estreich, author of Fables and Futures: Biotechnology, Disability, and the Stories We Tell Ourselves (MIT Press), will explore the literary aspects of persuasion, with particular attention to metaphor. What values do these persuasive acts embody? Whose purposes do they serve? And whom do they obscure, dehumanize or erase? The literary content of these persuasive acts suggests a necessary role for writers, literary critics and scholars of disability studies, as we seek to guide the use of new and powerful biotechnologies in human beings.

George Estreich's writing has appeared in Tin House, the New York Times, Salon, and other publications. He teaches writing at Oregon State University.   Prior to Estreich's talk, the UMMA exhibition Mari Katayama will be open for browsing beginning at 5 p.m. In the exhibition, Katayama features her own body in a provocative series of works combining photography, sculpture, and textile.

The autonomy of robotics and space systems are fundamental issues, especially for large-scale systems with critical safety issues. Specific problems include robotic mixed-type decision-making problems and spacecraft multi-phase mission planning. We propose both off-line and online algorithms to empower autonomy in real-time.
We develop the off-line algorithm by first formulating such problems as a Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP), with safety criterions as constraints directly. Subsequently, to solve the QCQP, an efficient optimization algorithm is proposed based on inexact augmented Lagrangian methods. Our algorithm admits simple subproblems with closed-form solutions, which leads to scalability and real-time applicability. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness and efficacy of our algorithms.
Also, for the online algorithm, Control Barrier Functions (CBF) with forward-invariance is adopted to guarantee safety via calibrating the input from control algorithms. However, CBF in high-order systems can often encounter infeasibility due to control limitations. To address that, we learn a differentiable safety hyperplane getting the lower-order states involved. A feedback training scheme is developed to decrease the infeasibility rate recursively. Subsequently, the newly learned safety hyperplane is added as a constraint in the CBF formulation. Simulation results on path planning demonstrate the improvement of the proposed framework.

Abstract:

Research on the emotional and motivational brain often focuses on a few structures (such as the amygdala and the ventral striatum) thought to be central to this type of processing and separate from those that implement cognition. In this presentation, I will discuss research that embraces a distributed view of emotion/motivation circuits, and efforts to unravel the impact of emotion/motivation on large-scale brain networks that are important for perception, cognition, and action. In the framework presented, networks are viewed as dynamic processes and their organization unfolds temporally. In this dynamic view, emotion/motivation have broad, distributed effects that support complex behaviors.

Developmental Brown Bag: How does the brain learn to read? (October 28, 2019 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67617 67617-16907161@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 28, 2019 12:00pm
Location: East Hall
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Dr. Booth’s visit is being co-sponsored by the Department of Psychology Developmental Area and the Combined Program in Education and Psychology.

Abstract
Reading is fundamental to human society and the costs of illiteracy are enormous. In this lecture, I will discuss our attempts to uncover the mechanisms underlying the development of our amazing abilities to read. I will argue that general principles of brain development are key to reaching a deeper understanding in this field of inquiry. These principles suggest increases across development in (1) the specialization of brain regions for different computations and (2) the interaction between brain regions through enhanced connectivity. I will also review evidence suggesting that our growing knowledge of typical brain development is relevant for understanding why approximately 6% of children have reading disabilities. Finally, I will discuss our attempts at using brain imaging in clinical applications.

Biography
James R. Booth is the Patricia and Rodes Hart Professor of Educational Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. The main goals of his research are to understand the brain mechanisms of the development of language, reading and math in typical and atypical populations. Prof. Booth has been continuously funded for two decades and has published extensively in diverse journals. He has served in various roles both within and outside of the university, such as departmental chairperson, grant review panel member and associate journal editor. Prof Booth aims to facilitate the interaction between the fields of cognition, neuroscience and education.

UM Psychology Community Talk: Listening to shades of blue: What is special about the brain of a synesthete? (October 28, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65654 65654-16627858@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 28, 2019 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Exploring the Mind

Abstract: Synesthesia is an automatic and involuntary phenomenon in which one sensory modality evokes additional experiences in an unrelated modality (e.g., sounds evoking colors or tastes). Synesthesia is also associated with other psychological/neurological differences that can lead to savant-like traits. What is special about the brains' of synesthetes that leads to these experiences in only 4% of the population? And, if synesthetes’ brains are different, why can non-synesthetes acquire these sensations following drug-use or sensory deprivation? Dr. Brang will review wide-ranging evidence for synesthesia as a continuum of experiences that are present in the general population, neurobiological models underlying synesthesia-like phenomena, as well as the consequences of having synesthesia.

Bio: David Brang is an Assistant Professor in the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience area in the Department of Psychology, where he directs the Multisensory Perception Lab. He received his BA in Cognitive Science and PhD in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, and completed Post-Doctoral Fellowships at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. His research examines how the sensory systems (such as vision and hearing) influence one another in order to enable sensory signal recovery after brain damage or disease.

Transient activity of cholinergic projections from the basal forebrain to the prefrontal cortex is necessary for attentional performance and cue processing. Two lines of investigation aim to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying cue-processing and cue-guided movement. The first of these examined choline transporter (CHT) activity in the prefrontal cortex of mice expressing the human CHT coding variant, I89V. As choline reuptake is the rate-limiting factor in acetylcholine synthesis, CHT impairment was hypothesized to have a strong influence on cholinergic function in attentional circuits. Separately, a second series of experiments evaluated glutamatergic cortico-striatal projections during cue-guided movement in rats. In this way, we hope to further illuminate the contribution of cholinergically-driven striatal inputs in the completion of the attentional-motor circuit.

While the importance of reciprocity has been shown in theoretical models and extensively studied in adults, little is known about the developmental trajectory of reciprocity in children. In the first part, I will provide a theoretical framework about the developmental trajectory of cooperative behaviors. In the second part, I will show a series of studies in which we adapted paradigms from adult research for studies with children, exploring when they begin to engage in tit-for-tat reciprocity, learn how to invest in a trust game, and bribe others.
