Please join us for the opening reception of Professor Endi Poskovic’s art exhibition and his informal art talk.

The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation, multiplicity, seriality. Through his works, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement, exile, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China, Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan, CIUM presents this exhibition.

Endi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia, Norway, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the United States Fulbright Commission, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Norwegian Government, the Camargo Foundation, the Flemish Ministry of Culture, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Art Matters Foundation, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Jincheon Art Museum, South Korea and others.

HILS is the nation’s first graduate program focused on the science and methods of learning health systems. Increasingly recognized in academic literature, learning health systems are the underpinning of wide-ranging health improvement movements nationally and globally. The HILS program addresses the learning health systems core competencies, recently published by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Above all, the program aims to improve the health of individuals and populations by developing practitioners and researchers who design, implement and evaluate innovative change and continuous improvement.

HILS is housed in the Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS), a basic science department in the University of Michigan Medical School, ranked in the top ten nationally. DLHS focuses on the science of learning at all levels of scale, from individuals to systems spanning states and nations.

A brand new program, HILS matriculated its first students in the fall of 2016. PhD applications are due December 1, 2017 to begin in the fall of 2018. Visit http://medicine.umich.edu/dlhs-hils for MS program deadlines.

EXHIBITION RECEPTION: CLOUD/BANK (January 5, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47945 47945-11152008@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 5, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Join for a reception to celebrate the Cloud/Bank exhibition.

Cloud/Bank is a temporary installation designed for Exhibit Columbus, a 2017 exhibition and conference in Columbus, Indiana, by Architecture Lecturer Michael (Mick) Kennedy and a team of Taubman College M.Arch. students: Bob Allsop, Sophie Anstreicher, Scott Chriss, Chiao-Chun Chung, Julia Dallas, Kelly Gregory, Karl Heckman, Rachael Henry, Troy Huckendubler, Onur Kamburoglu, Panquat Kyesmu, Jenny Lee, Sarah Munchow, Kelsey Reynolds, Dan Smith, Tyler Whitney, Paco Wu, Shujie Xie, Jon Yates, and Yunsen Zhong. The project’s goal is to embody and communicate the historic legacy of the distributed networks of design and fabrication of both industry and agriculture in the Great Lakes / Midwest Region.

Cloud/Bank features advanced manufacturing techniques in architectural design that are unique to Taubman College. The students worked on parts of the project at the College’s FABLab. The project leverages a robotic fabrication technique developed by Assistant Professor and FabLab Director Wes McGee. The process utilizes a six-axis industrial robot augmented with a servo-controlled wire bending system to form three-dimensional shapes out of standardized steel rods.

U-M is one of five universities selected to participate in Exhibit Columbus, along with Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning; The Ohio State University Austin E. Knowlton School of Architecture; University of Cincinnati School of Architecture and Interior Design; and the University of Kentucky College of Design, School of Architecture. Each university received $10,000 to support the cost of materials, fabrication and installation of the project.

Exhibit Columbus is an annual exploration of architecture, art, design, and community in Columbus, Indiana. This year's exhibition included outdoor installations by five Miller Prize-winning architecture firms, five international design studios, and six Midwestern architecture and design schools. In Columbus, Cloud/Bank was located near Central Middle School, designed by Perkins + Will, and Lincoln Signature Academy, designed by Gunnar Birkerts & Associates. Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

The exhibition opens with a reception with the artists and an accompanying performance by Bailey Scieskza, who will be in character consistent with her costume figures and installation.

Pre-Fab/Post-Fab: Art in a Readymade Era showcases the works of Heidi Barlow, Shaina Kasztelan, and Bailey Scieszka, three young women artists based in Detroit, MI. Their work, although varying in style and form, speaks to a generation growing up with the influence of mass consumption, internet shopping, the glut of plastic toys, fake jewels, and tchotchkes. Whereas artists of the ‘60s and ‘70s reached first for paint tubes and canvas, these artists use inexpensive and lowbrow materials to twist the signifiers of pop culture, as they relate to gender politics and American ideals. It’s a balancing act between the icing and the cake, surface and substance.

Barlow’s confection-like constructs are unsettling, much like an empty float or matted-hair Barbie in a backyard pool. Although enticing, they allude to something lost in the translation, some sweetness, or idealism gone missing, along with what once mattered. Yet, the work isn’t cynical, but embraces transition instead. We’ve hardened a little in the process, much like the stiff and sugary piping Barlow often incorporates in her works. And maybe that’s a good thing.

If Barlow’s aesthetic leans towards Stepford Wives gone awry and the guilty pleasure of eBay, Shaina Kasztelan offers us psychedelic Middle America. Her assemblages are disorienting, vertigo-inducing. Technicolor sculptures conjure up hallucinations of the mall, or spinning carnival rides that last too long. Kasztelan’s work is sinister, even a little menacing. As viewers we are leery.

Finally, Bailey Scieszka takes this subversive garish ethos full tilt and invents her own world, literally morphing into her own creation. Scieszka’s alter-ego Old Put, a demonic shape-shifting clown, becomes the artist/protagonist and creates work in performance, video and drawing. Old Put collects pop culture references like artifacts of a lost civilization, and seems as likely to commit a murder as bake a cake.

For Barlow, Kasztelan and Scieszka, outdated paradigms about class, good taste, and femininity are just temporal flashes in the pan. And it’s their party.

Join us after Ebony Patterson's Stamps lecture as we welcome the artist to the Institute for the Humanities. Patterson's "of 72" exhibition runs Jan 11-Feb 9.

“What happens when seventy-two men and one woman die and no one knows who they are?” Jamaican artist Ebony Patterson’s "of 72"—a mixed media work on fabric with digital imagery, embroidery, rhinestones, trimmings, bandanas, and floral appliques—considers the 2010 “Tivoli Incursion” in Kingston, Jamaica. This armed conflict between the Shower Posse drug cartel and Jamaica's military and police took place when security forces began searching for drug lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke, after the United States requested his extradition. The violence killed at least 73 civilians.

Ebony G. Patterson is a Jamaican artist born in Kingston, Jamaica. She studied at Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. An assistant professor in painting at the University of Kentucky, she has shown her artwork in numerous solo and private exhibitions and is represented by Monique Meloche Gallery.

"Ruth Gruber, Photojournalist" celebrates the remarkable life, vision, and heroic tenacity of a 20th-century pioneer and trailblazer. Once the world’s youngest Ph.D., Ruth Gruber passed away in November of 2016 at the age of 105. The photographs in this exhibition span more than 50 years, from her groundbreaking reportage of the Soviet Arctic in the 1930s and iconic images of Jewish refugees from the ship Exodus 1947, to her later photographs of Ethiopian Jews in the midst of civil war in the 1980s. A selection of Gruber’s vintage prints, never before exhibited, will be presented alongside contemporary prints made from her original negatives.

The opening reception will include remarks about the exhibit, light refreshments, and a screening of the documentary, "Ahead of Time: The Extraordinary Journey of Ruth Gruber."

"Ruth Gruber, Photojournalist" is organized by the International Center of Photography and was made possible by Friends of Ruth Gruber. The exhibition is also co-sponsored by the U-M Office of the Provost.

Join us for our monthly Third Thursday in the Clark Library, where we’ll celebrate the maps of Henry Vignaud and get a glimpse into the history of the Golden Age of mapmaking in 17th century Amsterdam.

The University of Michigan acquired the extensive personal library of Vignaud, an American diplomat living in Paris, in 1922. It included thousands of books, atlases, maps, and other publications, with many of the maps extracted from broken atlases originally published by the illustrious Hondius and Janssonius publishing houses. Staff in the Clark Library sought to organize these fascinating maps based on their physical characteristics and similarities, with the ultimate goal of reassembling the original atlases.

Join us as we celebrate the opening of our final exhibition of the academic year with our 2018 Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence Matthew Angelo Harrison. Harrison will be in conversation with curator Amanda Krugliak.

About the installation:

Detroit-based artist Matthew Angelo Harrison takes a satirical look at historical narratives—exploring issues of race, design, mortality and industry—by making use of analog and digital technologies. For his solo show, "Abstract Ancestry," at University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities, Harrison will produce a suite of mechanical drawings with his homemade 3D printer. Using books and documents containing problematic historical portrayals as the substrate for his drawings, Harrison is able to explore issues of representation. The exhibition also examines abstraction, setting the printers to work at a low resolution ensures that imperfections and variability come through in these machine-produced drawings.

This project is funded by a grant from the Efroymson Family Fund.

Join us for the last Third Thursday of the 2017-2018 school year as we celebrate maps as art. Maps can be much more than geographic tools, telling us how to get somewhere. Instead, more often than not they become artwork themselves. Come and explore the Clark Library’s collection of artistic maps. We will feature Elaine Wilson’s paintings from Charting the Wolverine, “Europe as a Woman” from Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia, and much more.

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” — Thomas Merton

Third Thursday is a monthly open house that showcases the highlights of the Clark Library’s vast collection. These fun, thematic events are open to everyone, offering the community a look at some of our favorite maps and other materials.

Exhibition Reception - Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt (May 31, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52090 52090-12418629@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 31, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with the assistance of James Barker and Jennifer Junkermeier, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt is a retrospective exhibition that pays homage to and celebrates fifty years of Ellen Wilt’s expansive art practice. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Wilt has lived and worked in Ann Arbor since 1949 and completed two degrees (BFA, ‘69 and MA, ‘70) at the University of Michigan. She is an important figure in Ann Arbor’s art community, who has consistently worked at fostering a vibrant arts community as an artist and educator in the Academy and beyond. She was an art professor for 17 years (1969-85) at the Eastern Michigan University. During this time she also organized and facilitated numerous community-engaged projects that empowered first-time and emerging artists to show their work. It was not until she retired and was well into her 70s that she turned her focus to her own art practice. Her work was duly recognized with numerous awards from the Michigan Water Color Society, Washtenaw Council for the Arts, and the Holland Friends of Art between 1984 and 1993.

For the first time in the last three decades, Materials On Hand: The Art of Ellen Wilt brings together over 40 carefully selected works from personal and private collections that highlight Wilt’s artistic contributions in Southeastern Michigan. Her intuitive and playful bricolage way of working reveals the scope of her achievement and her specific interest in the Michigan region and its landscape. She has developed multiple bodies of work that feature domestic objects from teapots to chairs while also reckoning with iconic architectural tropes of bridges and tunnels which are ongoing motifs in her work. Wilt continually experiments and explores new ways of working in a variety of two dimensional mediums including, oil, acrylic and watercolor. Since the 1970s she has incorporated collage into her practice using whatever materials she has available to her. These range from butcher paper, aluminum foil, and tissue to balsa wood, toothpicks and other found objects. She creates mixed media paintings, cut outs, rubbings and installations that reimagine the agency of mundane objects and invite viewers to look again.

Exhibition Dates: Thursday, May 31 - Sunday, September 9, 2018
Exhibition Reception: Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 6-8 pm
A conversation with Ellen Wilt: June 9, 2018 from 2-3 pm

Youth Arts Alliance offers high-quality, trauma-informed creative writing, print-making, movement, theatre, expressive art, comix, horticulture, photography, mosaic and mural workshops to youth in the juvenile justice system in Jackson, Monroe, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.

Youth Arts Alliance uses creativity as a tool to alter potential for those in juvenile detention and residential treatment facilities by providing safe spaces for self-expression, collaboration and celebration, profoundly transforming the trajectory of individuals and their impact on society.

This exhibition is a collaboration among Detroit Street Filling Station, Youth Arts Alliance, and Prison Creative Arts Project.

International Institute Student Fair and Information Session (August 30, 2018 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53246 53246-13321609@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, August 30, 2018 4:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: International Institute

Are you interested in international or regional studies? If so, the International Institute can help you make the most of your time here. All U-M students–especially incoming graduate students–are invited to attend our annual fair and information session. A networking dinner reception will follow at 5:45pm.

To RSVP, and to be added to email lists tailored to your specific interests, please visit: http://alturl.com/w4rzw. We would appreciate hearing from you by August 25.

The University of Michigan’s International Institute houses 17 centers and programs, each focused on specific world regions and global themes. Common benefits of connecting with our centers include:

• Joining student email lists for information on each center's activities, lectures, events, job news, conferences, funding opportunities, etc.
• Learning about funding opportunities: Each year, the International Institute and its centers distribute over $4 million to U-M students and faculty, resulting in approximately 500 awards for international study and research.
• Utilizing our course lists to identify classes that are relevant to your regions or countries of interest.
• Invitations to special events where you can connect with guest speakers, as well as other students and faculty who share similar interests.
• Earning a graduate certificate or master’s degree focused on a world region or theme. These programs vary by center. Many of our students earn dual degrees with other programs, and/or proceed directly from undergraduate studies into our MA or certificate programs.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this event, please reach out to us at least 24 hours in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange. Please contact: ii-gradadvising@umich.edu.

This event is a tabled event with multiple constituents, and there will be light hors d’oeuvres served.
