Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

Join us for an open house exploring interesting bindings and enclosures on a selection of manuscripts, printed books, and artists’ books in terms of what they disguise and what they reveal. Our first introduction to a book often comes via its cover or enclosure. While many covers plainly identify and entice us to peruse their contents, others obscure what they protect and may even leave us wondering if what we’re looking at is in fact a book. Other covers are so captivating as to overshadow what they enclose, leaving us reluctant to venture past them for a look inside. Ultimately many covers and enclosures reveal a great deal more about their creators, owners and admirers than about the texts and images within.

This event is part of Special Collections After Hours, a monthly open house series sharing highlights from the many books, documents, and artifacts in our collections. Each event is open to everyone and will offer a new group of themed materials for visitors to explore. Open houses are held on the second Tuesday of each month during the academic year. Light refreshments will be provided.

Celebrate the work of artists and designers featured in Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice. Enjoy a live DJ and refreshments.

Human migration is a defining issue of the 21st century, often calling into question the relevance, role, and responsibilities of national borders across the globe. As individuals seek refuge from geopolitical and environmental forces, we become an increasingly globalized community. Demarcations of all types are simultaneously porous and closed, defensive and receptive, and seen in almost every facet of our existence. Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice responds to these conditions with an open-ended question, asking: “How has humanity made sense of the world in relation to borders and boundaries, both physically and psychologically?” While positioned within (or outside of) defined spaces and identities, human refusal of such literal definitions is paramount. Even while lines drawn have important consequences for lived reality, the winds, currents, and natural energies of the Earth deny enclosures and definitions that politics and maps might suggest.

Drawn from practices that are touched or driven by new media, Border Control: Traversing Horizons in Media Practice assembles works by artists who consider geographical contexts, patterns of migration, displacement, and statelessness. Collectively, they offer projects with subterfuge, refusal, and reconsideration of imposed state-sanctioned boundaries.

Artists: Annabel Castro, Mahwish Chishty, Lyn Goeringer, Ryan Griffis & Sarah Ross, Kate Hollenbach, Carrie Hott, X.A. Li, Rebekah Modrak, Abhishek Narula, Joel Ong, Jon Packles, Aislinn E. Pentecost-Farren, Susan Rochester, José Carlos Teixeira, Alex Turner, and Sabato Visconti.

Short films by: Nadav Assor, Anxious to Make (Liat Berdugo + Emily Martinez), Yaminay Chaudhri, Andrew Demirjian, José Guadalupe Garza & Miriam Ruíz, and Rick Silva.

October 5 - November 2, 2019
Opening Reception: Friday, October 4, 6-8 pm
Center Galleries at the College for Creative Studies, Detroit

WiAn: White Garden With White Noise is co-presented by Center Galleries and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, with support from the Nam Center for Korean Studies at the University of Michigan.

Through visually and auditorily immersive installation, artist JuYeon Kim recognizes, illuminates, and honors the unimaginable suffering and enduring spirit of the Korean “comfort women” (wianbu in Korean) who were forced into sex slavery by the Japanese military during World War II.

It is estimated over 200,000 Korean women fell prey to Japanese soldiers during this time period, many were as young as 14 years old. The girls and women, often from rural villages, were enslaved in a variety of ways, including kidnapping, coercion, or being convinced with lies of paid factory work during desperate times of famine. Victims of forced sterilization, many died during their time of enslavement. Those who survived often did not return home after the war for fear of stigma and rejection. For much of history, their story has remained untold.

Through WiAn, Kim invites viewers to join her in the recognition of this atrocity — and in providing comfort to the souls of these women. Through meditative poetry, a soundscape by classical music composer George Tsontakis, and sculptural objects, Kim creates a physical space for the souls of these women to be honored, to be comforted, to let go of the past, and to move forward.

Visitors to the exhibition encounter an ethereal white gardenscape of transparent and opaque fictitious flora, comprised of many different plant specimens. White, the traditional color for Korean funerals, returns the women to their rightful purity and innocence. At the center of the garden, two palanquins engraved with original poetry invite the souls of the wianbu to take rest from their arduous journey to be carried like royalty, to receive unequivocal compassion and kindness. A transparent door and trellis, also engraved with original poetry, invites souls to move lightly, unburdened, to the next chapter of being.

In a time when the #metoo movement has brought about a cultural reckoning, Kim’s work also provides comfort, strength, and a space of contemplation for the living, to all who have suffered and still suffer at the hands of systemic power inequity.

JuYeon Kim is the 2019 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan.

Organized By: MENA ( Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health

You are cordially invited to this year’s “Dia de Los Muertos” event taking place on November 1st from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the School of Public Health’s Community Room 1680. MENA (Middle Eastern and North African) Public Health, La Salud, and PHSAD (Public Health Students of African Descent) have partnered to present a Dia de Los Muertos event which is meant to commemorate all the lives lost to any discrimination or racism in the U.S. and internationally.

Dia de Los Muertos stems from Mexican traditions and originates from Aztec practices. We use this day to celebrate, not mourn, the lives of our beloved departed and rejoice by sharing ofrendas that remember the individual as they were in life. Although this festive occasion is meant to welcome our loved ones, there are many lives that were forgotten both in life and death. These lives were victimized, racialized, and prosecuted during life as a result of structural racism and exclusion. This year, we hope to raise awareness for the lives that were silenced and empower future practitioners to advocate for these communities and prevent future injustices.
We celebrate in community to provide space for the living and dead, and invite you to join us for an evening of activities, dialogue, food and performances! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Opening Reception of Art Exhibition: Blood Underwater (November 1, 2019 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68775 68775-17147181@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 1, 2019 6:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

Water, as a natural resource, has been weaponized or made treacherous against people seeking safety and security. Some have been tortured or killed through waterboarding, others have been forced into oceans to die or disappear. Refugees across world regions have drowned crossing bodies of water in hopes for a better life.

Millions of people all over the world are being tortured, disappeared, and forcibly displaced by repressive regimes and wars while governments of other countries are denying them a safe place to live. There are now as many as 1.3 million survivors of politically motivated torture survivors living in the U.S. And over 70 million refugees in the world according to the United Nations Refugee Agency, the highest number in the almost 70 years since the refugee agency was founded.

During this time of rapid political change worldwide, the Blood Underwater Workshop and Exhibition offers an opportunity for students, activists, members of civil society organizations, and NGOs to come together as change agents to protect human rights, freedom and dignity, and to spread peace, justice and love.

Blood Underwater is a collaborative work, which encourages deep thinking and creative expression. It provides a voice for community members and activists, especially from political, national, racial, religious and other minorities, to express their concerns about global suffering through art. Participants gather around a large canvas with paints and music and are guided through a series of artistic expressions by “artivist” Elshafei Dafalla. The purpose is to use art to protest against violence, torture, enforced disappearances and other forms of brutality.

Blood Underwater is a demand for “freedom, peace and justice” -- from San Salvador to Khartoum to Sindh -- and throughout the world. This visual narrative will recognize men and women who have been murdered because they wanted to live in freedom, political prisoners, people forced from their homes, and those who have been tortured for standing up to dictatorships.

The Blood Underwater artwork narrative will connect participants to one another, and to refugees, asylum seekers, political prisoners and others who have already died or are currently suffering in their own countries or in new lands. This collaboration and new knowledge will enable participants to reflect together about global suffering, and what can be done about it.

-------
Eishafei Dafalla received a Bachelor of Arts in Sculpture from the College of Fine and Applied Art at the University for Science and Technology in Khartoum, Sudan as well as a Diploma in Folklore from the Afro-Asian Institute at the University of Khartoum. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Stamps School of Art and Design at University of Michigan. Dafalla has participated in more than fifty exhibits worldwide, and his work is part of public and private collections in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the United States. He continues to lecture and to exhibit his work, holding artist residencies, participating in community building activities, and creating performative installation events around the U.S. and internationally. An extended interview with Dafalla was created by the Washington DC-based, nonprofit, Center for Concern.

The exhibition will be on display November 4-22, M-F, 10am-5pm, at the Residential College Art Gallery at 701 East University Ave., Ann Arbor MI 48109. Free and open to the public.

There will be an opening reception for Blood Underwater with Elshafei Dafalla in attendance on November 1 from 6-8pm, and refreshments will be served.

It's that time of year again to register for Aerospace Day! For those of you who haven't heard about it:

The November biannual Aerospace Day will be held at the University of Michigan in the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building (1320 Beal Ave., Ann Arbor, MI) and will take place on Saturday, November 23rd from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Also, this event is free!

The U-M Student Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the U-M Department of Aerospace Engineering will be sponsoring:
● An exciting display of Michigan aerospace engineering students' class projects, featuring remote-controlled blimp and hovercraft races
● Fun STEM activities for K-12 students coordinated by our student project teams
● A separate blimp-building activity for high school students
● Tours of the Michigan aerospace engineering department labs and Wilson Student Team Project Center
● Mini rockets
● Opportunity to learn more about STEM and aerospace engineering
● Breakfast and lunch for all parents and participants (at no cost!)

There are multiple activities that cater to different age groups from K-12 so all students are welcome to sign up! Younger students (elementary/middle school) can participate in various fun STEM activities designed by our project teams. For high school students, we are pleased to offer a separate activity for the day: a mini-project on blimp-building and design. Students will also have the option of touring the aerospace engineering department instead of participating in the activities.

Registration is currently closed.

Please contact us if you have any questions, and we hope to see you at Aerospace Day in November! Once you have signed up additional information will follow.

Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Come celebrate the work of artists in the exhibition Taking a Stand, featuring work by micha cárdenas, Oliver Husain, Elizabeth LaPensée, Meryl McMaster, and Syrus Marcus Ware. Refreshments will be served. At 6:15pm there will be a special performance by Detroit-based artist Sacramento Knoxx in collaboration with Bianca Millar & White Feather Woman.

Taking a Stand is a group exhibition that brings together lively and energetic work that highlights the ways in which artists build solidarity and shape contemporary culture as active participants in our society. The works in the exhibition encompass photography, interactive drawings, augmented reality, and 3-D film installation. The collectivist impulse of the projects recast the gallery as a catalyst, a site of action and possibility for urgent and meaningful dialogue on culture and politics. The immersive and interactive installations don’t just represent social concerns from our cosmopolitan present, they delve into playful and poetic exchanges with public audiences on empathy and decoloniality to imagine just and equitable futures. Drawing on the themes of science fiction, artists in the exhibition invite audiences to time travel, blurring fact with fiction, weaving fantastical narratives and desires with ancestral knowledge, collective memories, and stories from their natural and urban environments. They acknowledge the vitality of recuperating Indigenous, migrant, and LGBTQ subjectivities and practices to better understand how to heal our damaged planet. Even though these installations are temporary and ephemeral, they foster vibrant liminal spaces for the public to explore what could be done during this time of ever-present ecological and political change. Taking a Stand is curated by Srimoyee Mitra.

Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

Look at the Great Lakes region through the eyes of Michigan children’s authors, including Tom Pohrt, Nancy Willard, and Joan Blos. In addition to published works, we will also have selected archival materials and artwork on display.

The Great Lakes represent the largest body of freshwater in the world and are surrounded by diverse ecosystems and communities, from the rust belt steel mills that sit on Indiana's sand dunes to the protected forests of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Nonetheless, from Western New York to Eastern Minnesota, to grow up in the Great Lakes region means to grow up anchored to a landscape shaped by water, and to a social and economic environment built on a history of using (and often abusing) this abundant water source.

This event follows a lecture by Elizabeth Goodenough, Growing Up Near the Great Lakes, at 3:00 pm in the same space. Please join us for both events!

This event is part of Special Collections After Hours, a monthly open house series sharing highlights from the many books, documents, and artifacts in the Special Collections Research Center. Each event is open to everyone and will offer a new group of themed materials for visitors to explore. Open houses are held on the second Tuesday of each month during the academic year. Light refreshments are provided.

To limit the potential spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk of catching COVID-19, the University of Michigan has canceled all events with estimated attendance of over 100 people.

While we previously announced that the 2020 Stamps Senior Exhibition would move forward, with only the opening reception canceled, the scale of current circumstances now require that we cancel the exhibition entirely — including the screening and performances. We simply do not have the resources necessary to carry out such an ambitious project during this difficult time. We are exploring ways to showcase Stamps Senior work online and will provide more details at a future date.

The 2020 Stamps Senior Exhibition features work in a range of media by graduating BA, BFA and Interarts students at U-M’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. The exhibition unfolds during the month of April in various sites in the Art & Architecture Building.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

Please join the U-M IOE community for a very special event to honor the legacy of Walton M. Hancock.

Walt was a faculty member since 1959, serving as department chair, and continuing on as a professor emeritus through his retirement. He played a major role in establishing the department’s foothold in manufacturing, healthcare delivery systems, and worker safety, among others.

His pioneering work helped guide the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering and lay the foundation for our current mission and vision for education and research.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with Walt’s family and friends, IOE alums, faculty and students, and learn about some of the most recent activities in the department stemming from Walt’s legacy.

We hope to see you in May. Should you have any questions, please reach out to ioe.events@umich.edu.
