Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis. Evidence-based mindful meditation has been shown to reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns. This workshop will provide an overview of the basics of this powerful tool, introduce ways to incorporate both formal and informal mindful meditation practices into daily life, and a guided mindful meditation experience. In addition, every Wednesday from 12:15 – 12:45 pm, CEW+ holds guided mindful meditation sessions providing a weekly opportunity to practice in a supportive space.

12:00 – 1:00 pm: Lunch

Organized By: University Library

Look at the Great Lakes region through the eyes of Michigan children’s authors, including Tom Pohrt, Nancy Willard, and Joan Blos. In addition to published works, we will also have selected archival materials and artwork on display.

The Great Lakes represent the largest body of freshwater in the world and are surrounded by diverse ecosystems and communities, from the rust belt steel mills that sit on Indiana's sand dunes to the protected forests of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Nonetheless, from Western New York to Eastern Minnesota, to grow up in the Great Lakes region means to grow up anchored to a landscape shaped by water, and to a social and economic environment built on a history of using (and often abusing) this abundant water source.

This event follows a lecture by Elizabeth Goodenough, Growing Up Near the Great Lakes, at 3:00 pm in the same space. Please join us for both events!

This event is part of Special Collections After Hours, a monthly open house series sharing highlights from the many books, documents, and artifacts in the Special Collections Research Center. Each event is open to everyone and will offer a new group of themed materials for visitors to explore. Open houses are held on the second Tuesday of each month during the academic year. Light refreshments are provided.

To limit the potential spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk of catching COVID-19, the University of Michigan has canceled all events with estimated attendance of over 100 people.

While we previously announced that the 2020 Stamps Senior Exhibition would move forward, with only the opening reception canceled, the scale of current circumstances now require that we cancel the exhibition entirely — including the screening and performances. We simply do not have the resources necessary to carry out such an ambitious project during this difficult time. We are exploring ways to showcase Stamps Senior work online and will provide more details at a future date.

The 2020 Stamps Senior Exhibition features work in a range of media by graduating BA, BFA and Interarts students at U-M’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. The exhibition unfolds during the month of April in various sites in the Art & Architecture Building.

His pioneering work helped guide the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering and lay the foundation for our current mission and vision for education and research.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with Walt’s family and friends, IOE alums, faculty and students, and learn about some of the most recent activities in the department stemming from Walt’s legacy.

We hope to see you in May. Should you have any questions, please reach out to ioe.events@umich.edu.

OLLI Winter Open House (January 6, 2021 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/79802 79802-20501745@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, January 6, 2021 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

The theme of this winter's open house is: Discovering . . . at our age, in this age!
Discovering is marked by active curiosity. Discovering is marked by commitment of time. Discovering is marked by engagement in learning. Discovering is [often!] marked by collaboration with partners and friends.

This open house will feature:
• A Welcome and Introduction by Lynn Boyer and Ann Tomlanovich,
• Keynote Speaker: Brian Worthmann, Ph.D.
• OLLI Members’ Aha! Moments
• A Zoom Conversation with OLLI Program Chairs
• Who Knew? Discoveries during 2020 presented by Lisa Barton and Bill Furtwangler

Our keynote speaker, Brian Worthmann, PhD. will present: "This Happens in Science. This Happens at OLLI".

Join in the process of discovering with Brian Worthmann, Ph.D., a crowd favorite OLLI Study Group Instructor. Brian is a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. His current work is on ground penetrating radar for landmine detection. He received his PhD in Applied Physics at the University of Michigan in 2018 where he researched signal processing algorithms for sonar applications. He loves talking about physics to anyone who’s interested and enjoys trying to answer questions posed to him by curious minds.
