Cipher Tech Virtual Cybersecurity Challenge - University of Michigan (February 14, 2020 12:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72202 72202-17957276@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 14, 2020 12:00am
Location:
Organized By: University Career Center

Objective:
The Cipher Tech Challenge is an online cybersecurity challenge for students and professionals interested in a career in forensic software development. Over the course of a 2-week period, you will encounter challenges that will have you perform the same tasks that forensic software developers do every day. Questions will prompt for free response (e.g. submit an IP address or identify the attacker's name) and challenge your critical thinking skills.

First place will win an iPad with the rest of the top 10 participants taking home a battery pack! There will also be a raffle for a pair of Apple Airpods for those that participate. You may not receive any assistance from anyone else. You must participate within the event time frame listed above.

Resources
All that you need to participate in the Cipher Tech Challenge is a computer with an Internet connection and a modern browser (latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge). An installation of Kali Linux is recommended to get the full experience, but it is not required. During the challenge, you will need to utilize your problem-solving skills and Internet resources to solve challenges related to forensic software development.

Having trouble with the platform? You can open a Support Ticket on our system and someone will get back to you ASAP.

Engineered immune cellsare emerging as a revolutionary therapy that may transform outcomes for cancer patients. Two of these therapies based on chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) technology have received FDA approval and helped extremely ill patients where other therapies have failed - up to 90% of advanced relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) patients in clinical studies saw complete remission of their disease. But a truly novel modality like this - where a patient’s own immune cells are extracted, engineered, and reintroduced to attack their cancer - comes with unprecedented scientific, technical, and operational challenges. Here at BCG, we have partnered with leading biopharmaceutical companies to explore novel strategies to discover, develop, and deliver cell therapies to patients with true unmet need. Garner Soltes, Project Leader from our BCG NewJersey office, will lead this virtual session and walk through his specific experience on a BCG client case, where he, alongside a team of BCG consultants, developed a 10-year strategy and plan to help this client explore and succeed in the emerging cell therapy space.

Valvular heart disease is a major cause of mortality in the US, often going undiagnosed & untreated, representing a major disease burden leading to tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths each year. A revolutionary new minimally invasive solution was developed by a US MedTech company, enabling doctors to replace or repair these damaged valves via a transcathether approach rather than the existing standard of care which involved open heart surgery. While the treatment was revolutionary, and sales grew strongly, over half of the US population were still missing out on treatment, representing lost lives and lost opportunity. Dieter Iveson, Project Leader from our BCG Los Angeles office, will lead this virtual session and walk through his specific experience on a BCG client case, where he, alongside a team of BCG consultants, developed a strategy grounded in big data analyses to help this client address this unmet burden of disease.

Measuring the value of a precision oncology drug

Pharmaceutical companies areincreasingly tying drug prices to value. Traditional frameworks that measure the value of a therapy take a narrow approach of measuring the improvement in duration and quality of life vs the change in cost relative to an existing standard of care. While these approaches adequately capture the value of many drugs, they have a number of shortcomings. For example, they often underweight the value of therapies that modestly extend the life of terminal patients, they don’t consider the context for different stakeholders, and they ignore additional sources of value such as spillover effects and the societal benefit of treating rare diseases. These factors are especially relevant for precision therapies that treat terminal oncology. Here at BCG, we have partnered with leading experts to develop a more holistic approach to understanding the overall economic value of a therapy. Colin Shopp, a Consultant from our Chicago office, will lead this virtual session and walk through his specific experience on a BCG client case, where he, alongside a team of BCG consultants, developed a tailored approach to measuring the value of a promising new precision oncology drug.

The cover letter is one of the most challenging documents you may ever write: you must write about yourself without sounding selfish and self-centered. The solution to this is to explain how your values and goals align with theprospective organization's and to discuss how your experience will fulfill the job requirements. Before we get to content, however, you need to know how to format your cover letter in a professional manner..

No worries, we designed an experience just for you.

During this workshop we hope to...
- cover importance (not necessity) of a Cover Letter
- walk youthrough what goes in a Cover Letter
- talk through formatting and paragraph purpose
- transferable skills and how to convey
- how to tie back tocompany of interest and why
- guide you on how to use our office to gainexperience

You should come if you…
- Want to know what experiences employers look for and how to convey it on a cover letter.
- Don’t havea lot of experience to talk about or not sure how to relate experiences to a company
- Aren’t totally sure on what the “University Career Center” does.

EXCEL Open Lab: How to Make Art When the Sky is Falling (March 12, 2020 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73414 73414-18217157@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 12, 2020 11:30am
Location: Earl V. Moore Building, EXCEL Lab (1279), 1100 Baits Dr, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA

Making art is hard, but making art about difficult topics is infinitely harder. In this Open Lab, we’ll delve into questions of how to make art when the future seems bleak, how to make that art meaningful, and how to take care of yourself while doing this. Whether this art deals with personal grief, pain, or discrimination; or ventures into the larger scope of oppression, climate change, and the political world; engaging with these sorts of topics in-depth and in an artistic way requires some distance or reprieve. A faculty panel will share their experiences, offer counsel, and answer questions! Featuring SMTD Faculty Jose Casas, Kristin Kuster and Ashley Lucas.

As demonstrated by recent research, private instructors are often the first line of defense when playing-related pain, emotional, or mental health concerns arise. Armed with information about common challenges students face, a teacher might hold the key to unlocking their students' inner resources and connecting them with the appropriate healthcare provider to seek help. In this presentation you will learn basic tools you can use as a teacher (or future teacher!) such as noticing warning signs, what types of questions to ask, and when to refer to a medical provider.
