Talk: How I became a Systems Engineer

Ever since I was a kid, I was intrigued with how computers worked and I built my first one at the age of 12. In this talk, I will explain why I chose the engineering path early in my career. I will describe my career path from my help desk days in biotech to my current position as a systems engineer at Yelp, and give advice on how to be successful when it comes to choosing a rewarding career path.

--

Yelp’s mission is to connect people with great local businesses, and one of the teams working behind the scenes to make that happen is our five star engineering and product teams.

Playing an active role in our community is a value that we have strongly prioritized over the years. Typically we would invite you to come to Yelp’s HQ to network, grab a slice of ‘za, and learn about the technology and culture behind Yelp. With stay-at-home orders across the globe, Yelp (like many of you) has had no choice but to adapt to these changes. We understand that this is a strange and challenging time for many, so we’d like to invite you to join us as we navigate this new normal for the tech community together.

To stay connected, create space for folks to collaborate and share some of the things Yelp has been working on, we are launching our very own virtual tech talk series. This series of talks will feature Yelpers from engineering and product and will focus on themes such as career development, technical skills, workplace challenges and Yelp’s response to COVID-19.

Are you an upcoming or recent graduate still trying to figure out what your "Dream Job" is? Are you considering a career change and weighing new options? Recruiting can be the best kept secret of career opportunities!

You don't hear kids saying, "I want to be a recruiter when I grow up," but staffing (the art of matching people with jobs) is a $144.5billion dollar industry in the US. Recruiting can be a lifelong career calling OR a stepping stone into another career path. Although hospitality, marketing, communications, and sales are the most common employee backgrounds, a great training program can prepare anyone from an English majorto a social worker for a successful career in recruiting!

We're all trying to find that dream job, but it can be hard to sift through the thousands of career paths and industries in the business world. Recruiting might be the job for you if:
• You love building relationships and interacting with people all day
• You have a competitive streak but still like collaborating with a team
• You've thought about sales but would rather be a consultative matchmaker than someone just pushing a product
• You enjoy the satisfaction of helping others
• You'd rather see immediate reward in your weekly paycheck (base + commission) as opposed to waiting for a 5% raise at the end of the year

Join Allie, Tracy and Tealfrom TEKsystems for a casual info session about the perks and challenges of a career in recruiting, culture at TEKsystems, and the Q&A that YOU want to hear! This is an informal event, and we welcome everyone who is looking to learn more about recruiting or who is interested in a business career at TEKsystems. Open Opportunities @ TEK: Recruiter / Inside Sales, Sourcing Specialist, Account Manager / Outside Sales, and 2022 Sales + Corporate Internship.

We have over 120 locations nationwide, with three in the Greater Seattle Area: Downtown Seattle + two in Bellevue, WA.

TEKsystems is currently hiring in multiple locations across the US!

Have you recently graduated but haven't found your dream job yet? Are you considering a career change and weighing new options? Recruitingcan be the best kept secret of career opportunities!
You don't hear kidssaying, "I want to be a recruiter when I grow up," but staffing (the art of matching people with jobs) is a $144.5 billion dollar industry in theUS. Recruiting can be a lifelong career calling OR a stepping stone into another career path. Although hospitality, marketing, communications, and sales are the most common employee backgrounds, a great training program can prepare anyone from an English major to a social worker for a successful career in recruiting!

• You'd rather see immediate reward in your weekly paycheck (base + commission) as opposed to waiting for a 5% raise at the endof the year

Join Stefanie, Gloria, Haylee, and Angela from the TEKsystems hiring team for an info session about the perks and challenges of acareer in recruiting, culture at TEKsystems, and the Q&A that YOU want to hear! This is an informal event, and we welcome everyone who is looking to learn more about recruiting or who is interested in a business careerat TEKsystems.

Open Opportunities @ TEK:
Technical Recruiter – Orlando Delivery Center (Lake Mary, FL)
Technical Recruiter – Philadelphia Delivery Center (Wayne, PA)
Technical Recruiter – Phoenix Delivery Center (Tempe, AZ)
Technical Recruiter – Milwaukee Delivery Center (Milwaukee, WI)

Interested but can't attend? Please reach out to Stefanie (smarshal@teksystems.com) or Gloria (gmcnerney@teksystems.com) about our open jobs.

Students in the CG Program become a part of an ongoing faculty-driven research, scholarly or creative project in their field of interest. Students learn valuable academic skills, applying these skills to their research project, academics, and future career opportunities, while receiving academic credit or compensation for their efforts in research work.

If you are a U-M Transfer Student and not graduating until winter 2022 and/or after, you are eligible to apply to the 2021-2022 UROP Changing Gears Program.
