Are you a U-M College of Engineering faculty or staff member?
Want to learn about some best practices for engaging students through mentoring?
Want to learn more about our engineering undergraduate students and their needs?
Want to enjoy a delicious Zingerman’s Deli lunch while having a thoughtful discussion with your colleagues?
IF YES, THEN THIS SEMINAR IS FOR YOU!

In this seminar, attendees will learn about how to develop and cultivate mentoring relationships with engineering undergraduates. Specifically, faculty members, Joi Mondisa (IOE) and Chinedum Okuwdire (ME) will discuss how they developed and are implementing discipline-based engineering student-faculty mentoring programs in their respective departments. These programs were initiated to address the needs of students, specifically minoritized populations (i.e., African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian/Alaska Natives). The workshop will feature details about: the development of discipline-based engineering student-faculty mentoring programs, participants’ program experiences, and mentoring elements and findings developed from the research project that might apply broadly to others groups.

Title:
INFORMS Navigating the Academic Job Market Panel

Abstract:
The academic job market is highly competitive and might seem like a complex process for the first-time job seekers. We are fortunate to have a number of wonderful Ph.D. students with first-hand experience who are willing to share their experience attaining faculty positions on the recent job market. We are holding a virtual lunch-and-learn event to help Ph.D. students learn more about different aspects and steps of finding an academic job. The event is open to all IOE students and faculty, and we particularly encourage attendance of Ph.D. students who are entering the job market this year or considering going on the academic job market in the future.

Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

This event has been cancelled.
This workshop helps to enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and research faculty mentor/advisor. During the workshop, students and faculty will have the opportunity to develop a Mentoring Plan, a two-way agreement about goals, needs, and expectations; it is co-written by the student and research faculty mentor/advisor. It is an excellent way to establish and support mentor-mentee relationships.
Because this program aims to enhance the mentoring relationship, mentors and students are expected to attend the workshop together. If a faculty member has attended a MORE workshop for faculty in the past, and is familiar with the MORE mentoring plan template, they may choose to attend the last portion of the workshop only (plan to arrive at 11:50 a.m.). Lunch is provided. This workshop has an optional informal meeting time to finish working on the mentoring plan from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/51ORM.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Founder of IF Management, Author & Speaker, Steven Herz

“When all else is equal—education, work ethic, intelligence, experience, ambition—the single biggest factor in winning business, promotions, friendships, or followers hinges on our ability to communicate and connect,” says LSA alum Steven Herz.

Before starting a broadcast and marketing representation firm, Steven graduated from LSA in 1988 with a Political Science degree and worked for the Michigan Daily as a sports and editorial writer.

In his upcoming book, Don’t Take Yes for an Answer, Steve Herz identifies the three key critical traits that human beings respond to most (AWE): Authority, Warmth & Energy. As our state and region reopen, community organizations, non-profits, and churches, as well as for-profit enterprises share a responsibility to exemplify safe behaviors and to develop policies and protocols that ensure the safety of the communities in which they operate. To support community partners as they work towards these goals, the UM-Detroit Center, The Ginsberg Center, and the UM School of Social Work are hosting a safe reopening workshop.

The discussion and workshop will focus on how organizations and communities can re-open without putting people at increased risk of catching the virus and provide you an opportunity for you to discuss your concerns, hopes, and goals.

Among the topics we will discuss are

- Developing rules and procedures to keep people safe
- Communicating to your staff and communities
- Identifying opportunities: how new technologies can help you achieve your goals

Please, click the RSVP button in the related links section. As you RSVP, you can also ask questions or raise concerns in advance of the workshop.

The workshop will be hosted by Dr. Scott Page from UM Ross, who created a re-opening toolkit that will be the basis for the workshop.

This report presents an evidence-based case for decarceration as the only humane and meaningful response to the COVID-19 pandemic in prisons, based on extensive documentation of current conditions from phone calls, letters, and other messages by people incarcerated in the state of Michigan. In this time of extraordinary upheaval and potential for change in world history, the impact of COVID-19 on people in prison will hopefully add to the fierce determination of the public and policymakers to dismantle this current US punishment-based criminal legal system. This report calls for sweeping changes to Michigan’s current policies and advocates for a mass reduction in the prison population, a reduction that focuses on people who have served 20 or more years and have grown or are growing old in prison.

"I Don't Want to Die in Prison": A public health conversation with Abdul El-Sayed & people who survived living in Michigan's prisons before & during COVID-19
Thursday August 20, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

This webinar will highlight the findings of the white paper, feature expert voices about these issues, and provide time for attendees to ask questions and learn more. Webinar panelists include Abdul El-Sayed and people who have lived through the horror, isolation, and disconnection of prison in Michigan. It will also be streamed on Facebook live and available to watch later on Youtube. This event is co-sponsored by the Carceral State Project, the American Friends Service Committee, the Prison Creative Arts Project, and Safe & Just Michigan.

Despite the discovery of a Higgs-like particle in 2012, there are still many unanswered questions. Studying events with the same-sign dilepton and multilepton (SSML) may help to gain insight into those questions. SSML events have relatively low rates in the Standard Model (SM) and are expected in many extensions to the SM. In this presentation, I will give an overview of physics and challenges related to the analyses of SSML events, focusing on the analyses I worked on, namely, studies of ttH and ttW production and evidence for four-top production with the ATLAS detector.

Abstract:
To what extent can misspecified subjective models distort correlations? We study an “analyst” who utilizes models that take the form of a recursive system of linear regression equations. The analyst fits each equation to an objective empirical distribution. We characterize the maximal pairwise correlation that the analyst’s model can predict given a generic objective covariance matrix, subject to the constraint that the estimated model does not distort the mean and variance of individual variables. We show that as the number of variables in the model grows, the estimated pairwise correlation can become arbitrarily large, regardless of the objective correlation.

Can the culture of STEM help reproduce inequality? The professional
cultures of STEM, which give each discipline its particular “feel” and
unite discipline members under a taken-for-granted system of meanings
and values, are not benign. Drawing from several NSF-funded survey and
interview-based studies, I argue that these professional cultures can
have built within them disadvantages for women, racial/ethnic
minorities, and LGBTQ persons in STEM. In this talk, I will discuss
the role of three particular cultural ideologies—schemas of scientific
excellence, depoliticization, and the meritocratic ideology—in
producing these disadvantages. I will end by explaining why decisions
that partially rely on assessments of individuals’ “fit” with
professional cultures are particularly important to critically examine
for their potential to contribute to inequality.

SEMINAR: "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Operations Research and Analytics: A Research Agenda for Scholarship, Practice and Service" — Michael P. Johnson (September 10, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/76449 76449-19717147@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 10, 2020 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

Title:
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Operations Research and Analytics: A Research Agenda for Scholarship, Practice and Service

Abstract:
Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) refers to strategies and processes that enable organizations to become more reflective of and responsive to identities, values and experiences of different stakeholder groups. Organizations committed to DEI may better fulfill their missions and improve the well-being of their stakeholder groups and of society at large.

In this talk, I will explore the presence of DEI in OR/analytics through an assessment of the profession (the diversity of OR/analytics practitioners) and scholarship (published and emerging work that addresses DEI and related issues). My focus will be on traditionally underrepresented and marginalized groups and communities. I will discuss current and proposed initiatives to support the increased application of DEI principles throughout OR/analytics practice, research and education. I will argue that infusing DEI and social & racial justice principles within OR/analytics can enable our society to become more equitable, more just and more welcoming of people from diverse backgrounds, identities and communities.

Abstract:
In this survey, I provide a unified definition of analogy-based expectation equilibrium (ABEE) for strategic environments involving multiple stages and private information. I discuss various alternative interpretations of the concept as well as how to use ABEE in practice. I review a variety of applications including two new ones related to speculative trading and personnel economics. I then discuss a number of alternative equilibrium concepts emphasizing the links and differences with ABEE. Finally, I discuss possible next steps in particular related to the endogeneization of analogy partitions.

We study the expansion of a cold, non-neutral ion plasma into the vacuum. The plasma is prepared by UV (355-nm) photo-ionization of Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap. We report on the formation and persistence of shock shells in the Coulomb-exploding plasma, as well as external-field-induced plasma focusing effects. Simulated results from a trajectory model and a fluid model verify the formation of shock shells. The computational analysis allows us to calculate time- and position-dependent density, temperature, and Coulomb coupling parameter, reaffirming the presence of shock shells and strong coupling in our experiment. Among other insights, the analysis further reveals the time scale of disorder-induced heating, the build-up of pair correlations, adiabatic expansion, and ballistic cooling.

The XENON1T liquid xenon time projection chamber is the most sensitive WIMP dark matter detector to date. Though the main WIMP search is performed by selecting for nuclear recoils, electronic-recoil events can also hold evidence for new physics, such as solar axions, bosonic dark matter, or neutrino magnetic moments. The low backgrounds achieved in this experiment allow for precision searches, even at low recoil energies. I will discuss the recent results of the electronic-recoil search in XENON1T and the implications for new physics channels.

Economic Theory: Implementation via Transfers with Identical but Unknown Distributions (Joint work with Antonio Penta) (September 15, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/81670 81670-20941455@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 1:00pm

Abstract:
We consider mechanism design environments in which agents commonly know that types are identically distributed across agents, but without assuming that the actual distribution is common knowledge, nor that it is known to the designer (common knowledge of identicality). Under these assumptions, we explore problems of partial and full implementation, as well as robustness. First, we characterize the transfers which are incentive compatible under the assumption of common knowledge of identicality, and provide necessary and sufficient conditions for partial implementation. Second, we characterize the conditions under which full implementation is possible via direct mechanisms, as well as the transfer schemes which achieve full implementation whenever it is possible. Finally, we study the robustness properties of the implementing transfers with respect to misspecifications of agents’ preferences and with respect to lower orders beliefs in rationality.
