Evaluating coastal management vulnerability to climate change (July 17, 2018 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/53030 53030-13202726@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, July 17, 2018 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

The National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) System created the Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Tool for Coastal Habitats (CCVATCH) to help land managers, decision makers, and researchers develop conservation, management, and restoration plans for coastal habitats in light of climate change. Reserves in New England and North and South Carolina will share the results from recent assessments they conducted. The presentation will demonstrate how CCVATCH serves as an evaluation process to identify sources of vulnerability, provide a greater understanding of the potential impacts of climate change alone and in relation to existing non-climate stressors, and identify data gaps and research needs.

About the Speakers:
Robin Weber has been engaged in the development of the CCVATCH from its inception and served first as an Applied Science Investigator and then as Project Lead in two funded projects designed to pilot test and implement CCVATCH at multiple locations. As a Stewardship Coordinator within the NERRS for 18 years, Ms. Weber applies science to the management and restoration of a variety of habitat types on Reserve properties and works with partners to enhance stewardship of managed lands more broadly within the State of Rhode Island.

Dr. Plunket initially proposed the idea of developing a climate vulnerability assessment tool designed for coastal habitats in 2011. Since then she has led a workgroup that developed the CCVATCH, served as the principal investigator on a Science Collaborative funded project to pilot test the tool, and trained staff in the CCVATCH process at NERRA/NERRS meetings. As Stewardship Coordinator at the North Inlet-Winyah Bay NERR, Dr. Plunket works on a variety of projects directed toward the long-term conservation of the North Inlet and Winyah Bay estuaries.

In 2010, a novel method of spectroscopic measurements on muonic hydrogen resulted in a 4% smaller proton radius than previously observed, and at an order of magnitude improvement in precision. This measurement, and a second in 2013, established the so-called "Proton Radius Puzzle". Now, the MUSE collaboration will simultaneously measure, for the first time, electron and muon scattering of both polarities from a liquid hydrogen target. In this talk, I will survey the physics of the Proton Radius Puzzle, introduce how the proton radius is measured in scattering and spectroscopic experiments, and discuss how the MUSE experiment will fill an important gap in the proton radius data.

Talks will be given each Wednesday and will be 30 minutes in length, with time after for questions. Lunch will be served at 11:45 and talks will begin at 12:00. Unless otherwise noted, they will be held in 340 West Hall.

"Optical Detection of Process Parameters in Structural Polymer Nanocomposites Using Gold Nanorods"

ABSTRACT:
The real-time measurement of thermophysical properties in structural polymers is crucial to the optimization of processing parameters for composites manufacturing. However, robust techniques for in-situ monitoring of key parameters such as temperature, stress, strain, viscosity, and degree of cure with high sensitivity and spatial resolution are lacking. Many optically active nanoparticles, including fluorescent quantum dots and plasmonic nanostructures, change their optical signatures in response to various environmental stimuli. These materials are good candidates for embedded sensing in polymers because of their high signal-to-noise and intrinsic non-contact sensing modality. However, because spectral shifts can arise through a variety of mechanisms, a thorough understanding of the fundamental relationships between environment and optical response is needed. I will show that the thermal shape transformation of gold nanorods in a polymer matrix is governed by multiple mechanisms, and these competing mechanisms lead to different behaviors at short and long time scales. This understanding can be exploited in order to use gold nanorods as a way to simultaneously measure temperature, dielectric constant, and modulus in a structural polymer resin.

BIO:
(William) Joshua Kennedy received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Utah in 2011. His graduate work and early postdoctoral work at the University of Texas - Dallas was focused on the study of the optoelectronic properties of carbon nanotubes and nanotube polymer nanocomposites. During a postdoctoral fellowship at Nasa Johnson Space Center, Dr. Kennedy studied the functional response of optically active polymer nanocomposites for space applications, and he developed a new piezoelectric composite for use on the International Space Station. Dr. Kennedy now works as a Research Physicist at the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. He is a member of the Polymer Matrix Composites Materials and Processes Research Team where he focuses on the development of multifunctional structural composite materials and embedded sensors for composite processing.

Abstract
As a part of Chilean President Michelle Bachelet's social reforms during her tenure was a push to expand access to and increase quality in public early childhood education. Un Buen Comienzo was a randomized control trial that took place from 2008 to 2012 that sought to improve prekindergarten quality by providing professional development to 119 prekindergarten teachers in 64 schools in Santiago, Chile. While the intervention was found to produce null effects on language and literacy student outcomes, a follow-up study revealed that teachers who implemented the pedagogical techniques imparted during the intervention had significant positive effects on student gains. As a matter of policy relevance, this presentation examines the role that teacher education and years of experience plays in determining the extent to which teachers adopt the instructional practices discussed during the intervention.

Leveraging Mixed Methods to Increase the Impact of Your Research: 1 + 1 = 3 (August 7, 2018 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53270 53270-13330236@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, August 7, 2018 9:30am
Location: University Hospitals
Organized By: Michigan Medicine, OBGYN Department

During this workshop, you will gain a strong understanding of the basic principles of mixed methods research - what, why, and how. After learning basic concepts, you will have time to work under the guidance of Dr. Wu and in collaboration with your peers, to develop rigorous qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research aims and an accompanying research design - you will then summarize these aims and design in a study diagram.

Bring your ideas whether it be a current research project or a topic that has been brewing in your mind. You should leave with a clearer, sharpened research concept that you can continue to work on with your mentors/research group.

We all have triggers that set us off. Maybe it’s too much traffic or that certain someone who gets under your skin. To be human means sometimes getting caught by life’s irritations and disappointments.

But when that occasional reaction becomes a routine inner state of irritability, anger, anxiety, stress or sadness, you’re in trouble.

You either manage your triggers or your triggers manage you. Unfortunately, just understanding this doesn’t tell you how to change it. This workshop will delve into the reasons we get triggered and how to change our thinking and responses so that we can take back our power.

Through presentation, discussion, and exercises, we will work together to help you find strategies and solutions to help make the shift from your triggered self to your bigger self for a more effective and enjoyable life.

Abstract
We ask what resume content can teach us about labor market signaling and the value of college credits and degrees. To do so we scrape a large corpus of resumes from an online jobs board and match these with actual records of college attendance and graduation from the National Student Clearinghouse. We then observe whether job seekers strategically omit schools they did not graduate from, and what worker and school characteristics predict this. These exercises serve three purposes. First, they provide novel evidence of job seekers’ valuation of non-completed degrees vis-a-vis the negative value of dropping out by school and job-seeker characteristics. Second, these results allow us to test assumptions relied upon in standard models of returns to schooling, labor market signaling and employer learning. Lastly, they permit a weak test of the signaling vs. human capital value of omitted schooling by observing employment differentials between omitters and non-omitters.

Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Mind the Gap: Using the Stellar Mass – Halo Mass Relation to understand Galaxy Growth and Cluster Assembly (August 22, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/52336 52336-12639139@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, August 22, 2018 12:00pm

A large variance exists in the amplitude of the galaxy cluster Stellar Mass – Halo Mass (SMHM) relation. We find that the magnitude gap between the brightest central galaxy (BCG) and its fourth brightest neighbor accounts for this variance. At fixed halo mass, clusters with higher magnitude gaps have larger BCG stellar masses. This stratification is also observed in semi-analytic simulations of low-redshift clusters; this suggests that this stratification results from the hierarchical growth of BCGs and may link assembly of the halo with BCG growth. We quantify the impact of the magnitude gap in the SMHM relation using a multiplicative stretch factor, which we measure to be significantly non-zero. Including the magnitude gap also significantly reduces the intrinsic scatter in the BCG stellar mass at fixed halo mass. Additionally, hierarchical growth predicts that at higher redshifts fewer mergers have occurred, indicating that the BCG’s stellar mass and magnitude gap should decrease with increasing lookback time. This suggests that the slope and magnitude gap stretch factor may evolve with redshift. We test this prediction using SDSS-redMaPPer clusters to measure the SMHM relation’s parameters as a function of redshift to z < 0.3. Contrary to expectations from semi-analytic galaxy evolution models, we find no evolution. We will discuss our results in the context of hierarchical growth and prior measurements of BCG growth over the redshift range of our sample.

Talks will be given each Wednesday and will be 30 minutes in length, with time after for questions. Lunch will be served at 11:45 and talks will begin at 12:00. Unless otherwise noted, they will be held in 340 West Hall.

UMAC is a weekly communication group, hosted by the University Center for Language and Literacy (UCLL), and is open to anyone in the aphasia community. UMAC is a great way to meet other people with aphasia while boosting communication skills and confidence.

The group runs from September through November, but is split into monthly sessions. Each monthly session includes four group meetings.

Groups are run by a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist who prepares activities for varying group sizes, skill levels, and topics. We emphasize functional communication that is useful for those of all communication levels and will provide you with new techniques to use long after the session ends.

This group is open to those of all communication skill levels. Aphasia can be incredibly isolating and takes a toll on confidence — this group takes aim at making connections and building confidence in speech and social interactions.

How do beliefs and feedback affect decision making among students? Evidence from a field experiment

Abstract:
Evidence from laboratory experiments shows that individuals hold biased beliefs about their own ability. However, little is known about how beliefs impact real-life decision making, which often requires assessing own ability relative to others. I conduct a field experiment with students preparing for a college entrance exam at a test preparation center in Colombia to document biases in beliefs and to test the impact of providing relative-performance feedback on academic choices. Over 10 rounds, I elicit beliefs about relative performance in weekly practice tests and provide feedback to treated students about their actual standing in the score distribution. Overall, I find that over 50% of students either over- or under-estimate relative performance in math and reading, and that receiving feedback makes high-performers more accurate in their performance assessments. University administrative records show that high- and low-performing treated students are 5.8 and 9.5 pp less likely to take the entrance exam, respectively. The evidence suggests that low-performers realize they may need additional time to prepare and may be more resilient. Those who took the exam but were not admitted are 12 pp more likely to register for the next admissions process than low-performers in the control group.

We describe some recent advances in distribution-free prediction intervals in regression, using the conformal inference framework. This framework allows for the construction of a prediction band for the response variable using any estimator of the regression function. The resulting prediction band preserves the consistency properties of the original estimator under standard assumptions, while guaranteeing finite-sample marginal coverage even when these assumptions do not hold. We discuss two major variants of our conformal framework: full conformal inference and split conformal inference, along with a related jackknife method. These methods offer different tradeoffs between statistical accuracy (length of resulting prediction intervals) and computational efficiency. We also develop a new method for constructing valid in-sample prediction intervals called rank-one-out conformal inference, which has essentially the same computational efficiency as split conformal inference. Lastly, if time permits, we will discuss a number of open challenges related to conformal inference.
Much of this represents joint work with my CMU colleagues Jing Lei, Max G’Sell, Alessandro Rinaldo, and Larry Wasserman.

Choreographer, director, and educator Donald McKayle (1930-2018) received numerous honors and awards, including an Outer Critics Circle Award, a NAACP Image Award, and many others. In 2005, McKayle was honored at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and presented with a medal as a Master of African American Choreography. He was named by the Dance Heritage Coalition as "one of America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures: the first 100." This session will be led by professors of dance Robin Wilson and Bill DeYoung, both of whom had connections to McKayle's work in different stages of their careers. DeYoung will lead exercises and Wilson will teach repertory material from one of McKayle's dances.

https://vimeo.com/105438851

Each Modern Lab session features a different guest artist teaching a master class and sections from their repertory. This panorama of the contemporary dance field is presented to broaden the students’ awareness of potential career possibilities. Each guest artist conducts a 30-minute technique class/warm-up and then teaches repertory that is performed by the class. In the final 15 minutes, faculty coordinator Bill De Young conducts a Q & A with each artist, discussing their career; their recommendations for transitioning from student to professional, and what they look for when they audition dancers for their projects.

This event is supported in part by the EXCEL Lab.

ABSTRACT:
We study to what extent information aggregation in social learning environments is robust to slight misperceptions of others' characteristics (e.g., tastes or risk attitudes). A population of agents obtain information about the state of the world both from initial private signals and by observing a random sample of other agents' actions over time, where agents' actions depend not only on their beliefs about the state but also on their idiosyncratic types. When agents are correct about the type distribution in the population, they learn the true state in the long run. By contrast, our first main result shows that even "arbitrarily small'' amounts of misperception can generate extreme breakdowns of information aggregation, where in the long run all agents incorrectly assign probability 1 to some fixed state of the world, regardless of the true underlying state. This stark discontinuous departure from the correctly specified benchmark motivates independent analysis of information aggregation under misperception.

Our second main result shows that any misperception about the type distribution gives rise to a specific failure of information aggregation where agents' long-run beliefs and behavior vary only "coarsely'' with the state, and we provide systematic predictions for how the nature of misperception shapes these coarse long-run outcomes. Finally, we show that how sensitive information aggregation is to misperception depends on how rich agents' payoff-relevant uncertainty is. An important design implication is that information aggregation can be improved through interventions aimed at ``simplifying'' the agents' learning environment.

Physicochemical and structural properties of molecules at the cell membrane interface are crucial for cellular and other biological functions, and are implicated in numerous diseases including amyloid diseases and bacterial/viral infection. While it is obvious that such properties must be fully characterized for biotechnological and biomedical purposes, the intrinsic complexity of the lipid bilayer environment poses tremendous challenges to most biophysical techniques and biochemical approaches. The Ramamoorthy group has been developing novel membrane mimetics and biophysical (including NMR) approaches to overcome these challenges, and apply them to investigate dynamic structures of membrane proteins and membrane-assisted amyloid aggregation processes. The Biophysical Concert will focus on the following specific topics to highlight the challenges and recent advances:

*Advantages and limitations of "sushi-like" lipid-nanodiscs (Ravula)
*Probing atomic-resolution "hugs and kisses" that enable enzymatic function (Gentry)
*Capturing the amyloid-ghosts red-handed by nanodiscs (Sahoo)
*Atomic-resolution "weed-and-feed" action of amyloid-inhibitors (Cox)

Towards geotechnical site characterization, seismic piezocone penetration testing (SCPTu) offers up to five separate measurements with depths from a single sounding: cone tip resistance (qt), sleeve friction (fs), porewater pressure (u2), time rate dissipation (t50), and shear wave velocity (Vs). Thus it is an expedient and economical means for obtaining stratification of the ground and the determination of a variety of soil engineering parameters for analysis and design, including nonlinear stress-strain-strength curves for clays and sands. Calibration and documentation of selected geoparameters are presented with statistical datasets. Moreover, direct CPT methodologies have been developed for application to shallow footings, piling foundations, and seismic liquefaction evaluation. Case studies are presented to show the utilization of SCPTu in geotechnics.

Biofilms are communities of bacteria adhered to surfaces. Recently, biofilms of rod-shaped bacteria were observed at single-cell resolution and shown to develop from a disordered, two-dimensional layer of founder cells into a three-dimensional structure with a vertically-aligned core. Here, we elucidate the physical mechanism underpinning this transition using a combination of agent-based and continuum modeling. We find that verticalization proceeds through a series of localized mechanical instabilities on the cellular scale. For short cells, these instabilities are primarily triggered by cell division, whereas long cells are more likely to be peeled off the surface by nearby vertical cells, creating an "inverse domino effect". The interplay between cell growth and cell verticalization gives rise to an exotic mechanical state in which the effective surface pressure becomes constant throughout the growing core of the biofilm surface layer. This dynamical isobaricity determines the expansion speed of a biofilm cluster and thereby governs how cells access the third dimension. In particular, theory predicts that a longer average cell length yields more rapidly expanding, flatter biofilms. We experimentally show that such changes in biofilm development occur by exploiting chemicals that modulate cell length.

Leakage is a major safety issue that, if left unchecked, may result in dam failure by various mechanisms. However, a lack of appropriate leakage investigation and monitoring can result in repairs that are unsuccessful in controlling or reducing leakage. A series of techniques have been developed to help in the assessment of leakage and seepage in dams. These techniques allow for identification of recharge zones, preferential paths, and transit times, which aid in monitoring and mitigating the dam leakage. The presentation describes various techniques and reviews several projects in the United States and abroad involving detection and prevention of dam and reservoir leakage, including leakage evaluation, analysis, design, construction, and post-construction verification of repairs.

The particle physics community has been working to study the properties of the Higgs boson since its discovery in 2012. As part of the Higgs physics program, the ATLAS experiment has conducted searches for di-Higgs (hh) production, which will allow us to measure the Higgs self-coupling and compare to Standard Model (SM) predictions. We can also search for enhanced hh production in beyond-the-SM scenarios, such as resonant production via a new heavy scalar, or non-SM couplings to the Higgs boson, either of which would increase the hh cross section. Looking forward, the LHC Run 3 will bring a new set of challenges, including more pp collisions per bunch crossing. Extracting rare physics signatures from this busier environment will be difficult for the ATLAS trigger system. The FastTracKer (FTK), a hardware upgrade to the ATLAS trigger system, will use new technologies to perform full-scan tracking for each event selected at the first level of the trigger. The tracks will then be provided to the software-based High Level Trigger, which makes the final trigger decisions. This will make it possible to efficiently find difficult objects, such as taus and b-tagged jets, at the trigger level. In this talk, I will present ATLAS searches for hh production using a variety of final states, as well as their combination, and discuss the use of FTK in the ATLAS trigger system during LHC Run 3.

Synchrotron radiation, namely, electromagnetic radiation produced by charges moving in a curved path, is regularly generated at large-scale facilities where GeV electrons move along kilometer-long circular paths. We use a metasurface to bend light and demonstrate synchrotron radiation produced by a sub-picosecond pulse, which moves along a circular arc of radius 100 µm inside a nonlinear crystal. The emitted radiation, in the THz frequency range, results from the nonlinear polarization induced by the pulse. The generation of synchrotron radiation from a pulse revolving about a circular trajectory holds promise for the development of on-chip THz sources.

The dynamics of a nearly-AdS2 spacetime with boundaries can be reduced to that of two particles in the anti-de Sitter space. We determine the class of physically meaningful wavefunctions, and prescribe the statistical mechanics of a black hole. We demonstrate how wavefunctions for a two-sided black hole and a regularized notion of trace can be used to construct thermal partition functions, and more generally, arbitrary density matrices. We also obtain correlation functions of external operators. The talk is based on work with A. Kitaev in the preprint arXiv:1808.07032.

Topological states of matter have been intensively studied in crystals, leading to fascinating phenomena such as scattering-free edge current in topological insulators. However, the power of topological protection goes well beyond ordered crystal lattices. In this talk we explore how topology protects mechanical edge modes in messy, noncrystalline, systems. We will use disordered fiber networks and quasicrystals as our examples, to demonstrate how topological edge floppy modes can be induced in these structures by controlling their geometry. Fiber networks are ubiquitous in nature and especially important in bio-related materials. Quasicrystals show unusual orientational order with quasiperiodic translational order. Law & Economics: Fair Settlements in Multidefendant Torts (September 13, 2018 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/56217 56217-13867066@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 13, 2018 4:30pm

Abstract:

We study the fairness of legal rules for computing damages in cases with multiple defendants. Specifically, we develop a bargaining model of multidefendant litigation and compare the equilibria under different offset rules—rules that adjust the plaintiff’s trial award depending on which defendants settle. We find that the most common offset rule, the pro tanto rule, is unfair because (1) the plaintiff recovers more than the expected value of her claim and (2) each individual defendant’s expected payout bears no relation to the harm she actually caused. In contrast, the proportionate share rule (which a minority of states currently use) is fair. We further show that the proportionate share rule has the added benefit of eliminating the strategic aspect of settlement negotiations: Co-defendants’ settlement negotiations affect each other under the pro tanto rule but not under the proportionate share rule. We briefly discuss efficiency implications and the tractability of the two rules, before concluding that states should switch to the proportionate share rule.

Abstract: This talk concerns the following research question in the context of Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metal parts: how to overcome the existing poor quality of AM parts?

The answer to this question requires melding fundamental knowledge of the thermal phenomena that cause defects, with algorithms that can detect the formation of defects from data acquired by several sensors built into an AM machine. This solution in turn entails transcending the twin challenges of: modeling the complex thermal physics of AM, and Big Data analytics, wherein existing finite element modeling, and statistical machine learning approaches, respectively, are limited owing to their computational tortuosity.

Incidentally, an approach to overcome these challenges can be forwarded from the domain of spectral graph theory. The graph theoretic approach allows discrete approximation of heat flux in AM parts, which reduces computation time to minutes, as well as, facilitates data from different sensors to be analyzed simultaneously and quickly. The efficacy of this graph theoretic approach is seconded based on data generated and shared by collaborators at NIST, Penn State, and Edison Welding Institute.

We study the convergence rate of the least squares estimator (LSE) in a regression model
with possibly heavy-tailed errors. Despite its importance in practical applications,
theoretical understanding of this problem has been limited. We first show that from a
worst-case perspective, the convergence rate of the LSE in a general non-parametric regression model is given by the maximum of the Gaussian regression rate and the noise rate induced by the errors. In the more difficult statistical model where the errors only have a second moment, we further show that the sizes of the 'localized envelopes' of the model give a sharp interpolation for the convergence rate of the LSE between the worst-case rate and the (optimal) parametric rate.
These results indicate both certain positive and negative aspects of the LSE as an estimation procedure in a heavy-tailed regression setting. The key technical innovation is a new multiplier inequality that sharply controls the size of the multiplier empirical process associated with the LSE, which also finds applications in shape-restricted and sparse linear regression problems.

Dark matter and inflation represent two of the biggest open question in cosmology. Although they are generally thought of as distinct and unrelated phenomena, here I will ask whether they might be closely connected. In particular, I will describe a class of models in which a stable inflaton is produced as a thermal relic in the early universe and constitutes the dark matter. I will show that the annihilations of these inflatons can efficiently reheat the universe, and I will identify several examples of inflationary potentials within this scenario which can accommodate all cosmic microwave background observables. As a simple example, I will discuss a model in which inflaton annihilations that take place through a Higgs portal interaction, leading to encouraging prospects for future direct detection experiments.

Abstract: CW and pulsed Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopic techniques coupled with site-directed spin-labeling (SDSL) can provide important structural information on complicated biological systems such as membrane proteins. Strategically placed spin-labels alter relaxation times of NMR active nuclei and yield pertinent structural information. EPR techniques such as Double Electron-Electron Resonance (DEER) and Electron Spin Echo Envelope Modulation (ESEEM) are powerful structural biology tools. The DEER technique can be used to measure distances between 2 spin labels from 20 to 70 Å. However, the application of DEER spectroscopy to study membrane proteins can be difficult due to short phase memory times (Tm) and weak DEER modulation in more biologically relevant proteoliposomes when compared to water soluble proteins or membrane proteins in detergent micelles. The combination of these factors often leads to broad distance distributions, poor signal to noise, and limitations in the determination of longer distances. The short phase memory times are typically due to uneven distributions of spin-labeled protein within the lipid bilayer, which creates local inhomogeneous pockets of high spin concentrations. Approaches to overcome these limitations and improve the quality of DEER measurements for membrane proteins will be discussed: lipodisq nanoparticles, bi-functional spin labels (BSL), and Q-band pulsed EPR spectroscopy. ESEEM data will be shown to probe the secondary structure of membrane proteins. CW-EPR spectra of spin-labeled membrane proteins will be used to investigate dynamics and the immersion depth in a lipid bilayer.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): When Words Sweat: Identifying Signals for Loan Default in the Text of Loan Applications (September 17, 2018 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/56525 56525-13939983@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 17, 2018 11:30am

Abstract:

The authors present empirical evidence that borrowers, consciously or not, leave traces of their intentions, circumstances, and personality traits in the text they write when applying for a loan. This textual information has a substantial and significant ability to predict whether borrowers will pay back the loan over and beyond the financial and demographic variables commonly used in models predicting default. The authors use text-mining and machine-learning tools to automatically process and analyze the raw text in over 120,000 loan requests from Prosper.com, an online crowdfunding platform. The authors find that loan requests written by defaulting borrowers are more likely to include words related to their family, mentions of God, the borrower’s financial and general hardship, pleading lenders for help, and short-term focused words. The authors further observe that defaulting loan requests are written in a manner consistent with the writing style of extroverts and liars. Neutrons are hard to detect and until recently the technique used by Chadwick to identify the neutron in the 1930s has often been used to detect them. This method, based on recoil proton detection, does not provide detailed information on the neutron energy spectra unless one can do a neutron time-of-flight measurement (n-ToF). This is not always possible especially with the new generation of low b.g. underground accelerators designed for nuclear-astrophysics measurements.. Even when n-ToF is feasible, it often is not very efficient as a long flight path must typically be used together with a bunched and pulse-selected beam . Recent developments in deuterated scintillators, both liquids and recently crystalline, can provide efficient detection of neutrons and their energy spectra w/o n-ToF. As will be illustrated, these new detectors are proving to be especially useful for study of many types of rare nuclear reactions, for home-land security applications, for ion-beam dosimetry, and for measurements of important reactions creating problematic neutrons in the large scintillators used for neutrino oscillation measurements and for dark-matter searches.

The strength of dynamic ties: Dynamics promote cooperation, even in static ties (September 18, 2018 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/53774 53774-13459410@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 18, 2018 11:30am

One mechanism that promotes the evolution of cooperation is network dynamics, where ties can be shed and new ties formed. Yet past research has only compared networks where all ties can potentially be severed to those where none can, confounding the benefits of fully dynamic networks with the presence of dynamic ties within the network. This work accounts for the complexity of real-world networks, where some ties are more susceptible to change than others, by considering whether the presence of dynamic ties in networks promotes cooperation even among static ties. Results reveal that, in networks with both tie types, the higher rate of cooperation in dynamic ties “spills over” to those relations that are more difficult to alter, promoting cooperation even among static ties. Thus, findings demonstrate the critical role that dynamic ties play in promoting cooperation by altering behavioral outcomes even in non-dynamic relations.

Risk (Genoa, 1154)
The word "risk" entered the languages of western Europe in the mid-12th century. The Latin resicum first appeared in notarial archives in Genoa, and was used to describe a payment awarded to those who invested in dangerous trans-Mediterranean shipping. It comes from the Arabic word al-rizq, which in the Qur'an referred to the means of subsistence provided by God. In this presentation, we'll look at the very earliest attested uses of the Latin resicum and think together about how the word entered Latin, what it meant in these earliest contracts, and why the word and its cognates was embraced with such enthusiasm in the European languages.

No shoes allowed: Jewish Tradition between Spain and the Maghreb
Sephardi Jews living in the early modern Maghreb struggled to preserve their old traditions while adjusting to their new Islamic surrounding. This short talk will discuss a specific rabbinical answer from the mid-15th century, which tried to offer a general principle for Jewish cultural adaptability. More broadly, it will look at responsa literature as a fundamental source for the study of Mediterranean scholarly networks.

Radio-frequency field modulation underlies nearly all modern communication, from car radios to wifi. Despite being a mature technology first developed in the late nineteenth century, radio communication has several ongoing challenges including information security, increasing bandwidth by tapping the microwave- and mm-wave regimes, and improving resilience against electromagnetic interference (EMI). An exciting prospect to solving many of these challenges lies in replacing antenna technology with quantum technologies. In this talk, I will describe the recent development at Rydberg Technologies of a fundamentally new atomic receiver technology for AM and FM radio communication [1, 2]. The atomic receiver exploits the properties of Rydberg atoms, highly excited atomic states that are very sensitive to electromagnetic fields, to collect and demodulate AM and FM radio based on atomic spectroscopy in compact room-temperature vapor cells. Features of the atomic receiver include its small size, ability detect carrier-waves spanning several octaves, and a circuit-free detector element. Even in this first demonstration, the bandwidth and dynamic range are sufficient to receive human vocals.

Wikimedia’s trouble in representing topics related to gender, race, and nationality are well-documented. While the reasons for the gaps are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female, queer, and PoC participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. In an attempt to help address these issues and to broaden the community base of Wikipedians, and as part of the Latinx Heritage Month Celebrations at the University of Michigan, the Library is hosting this Latinx Wikipedia Edit-a-thon.

This event is made possible through collaborations between the University of Michigan Library, La Casa, and the Latinx Heritage Month Planning Committee.

Dark matter could be a thermal relic of freeze-in, where the dark matter is produced by extremely feeble interactions with Standard Model particles dominantly at low temperatures. The simplest sub-MeV dark matter models with freeze-in include models with a kinetically-mixed dark photon mediator, or equivalently models where dark matter is millicharged under the Standard Model U(1). In this talk I will discuss how such models can impact and be constrained by cosmological observables, including the CMB, the Lyman-alpha forest, and the EDGES observation of the cosmological 21 cm global signal.

The National Estuarine Research Reserves’ System-wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) data can contribute to research and discussion on climate change. The treatment of temperature data is of particular concern when applied to the analysis of interannual trends. Seasonal cycles can impose fluctuations that greatly exceed diurnal, tidal, or event-scale fluctuations, and seasonally skewed distribution of missing data biases calculations of annual or seasonal means.

This webinar will provide insights on encoded algorithms for measuring temperature trends, including the conservative approach of replacing missing temperature data with smoothed day-of-the-year averages and seasonal decomposition as well as the benefits and disadvantages of alternative approaches.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Thomas Grothues has a Research Faculty appointment as a fish ecologist at Rutgers University and begins as Research Coordinator for Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve System in Fall 2019. He has been using SWMP data in peer-reviewed publications about fish habitat use, migration, and recruitment since 2007.

Welfare Implications of Political Patronage in Electricity

Political involvement in electricity provision is a common occurrence, with politicians favoring their voters. This benefits needy consumers, while hurting provider revenues. I combine confidential data on the universe of billing records from a large state utility in India with data on elections and nighttime lights. I demonstrate new evidence on the extent of, and the mechanisms behind, political patronage in electricity provision. Using a close-election Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD), I find higher satellite-measured electricity consumption, but systematically lower bill collections in constituencies aligned with the ruling party. I show evidence of under-reporting of consumption and also of data manipulation in billing records. Exploiting the rich variation and detail in the data, I estimate net welfare to be unambiguously lower as a result of these actions. The producer losses of about $57 million are more than double the gains to consumers. To measure welfare changes, I develop a novel method that estimates the price elasticity of electricity demand in the presence of data manipulation, combining policy changes as instrumental variables with machine learning for model selection. My estimates are more robust than prior work which relies on aggregated data and on data that is likely to have been manipulated. Consistent with a model of patronage politics, I find that politicians target voters with greater influence and those who benefit more from subsidies.

Abstract:

Algorithmic prediction tools have proliferated in modern society. They promise improved decision-making, but contain the threat of entrenching race, gender or class biases. Little is known about how their use affects real-world outcomes. We evaluate the impacts of incorporating algorithmic predictions of future offending (risk assessments) in high stakes decisions: criminal sentencing. Using multiple identification strategies – differences-in-differences, discontinuities-in-time, and discontinuities-in-risk-score – we seek to answer three questions: whether risk assessment affected judges’ decisionmaking (lowering sentences for low-risk defendants relative to higher-risk defendants), whether it affected net outcomes such as incarceration rates, sentence lengths, and recidivism, and whether it affected racial disparities in incarceration. Our setting is Virginia, a state which adopted risk assessment with specific policy goals: lowering carceral sentences for nonviolent offenders and increasing sentences for sex offenders. Overall we find that a) judges do change sentencing decisions in response to the risk assessment, b) this change did not lead to any discernible increase in efficiency, defined as lowering incarceration without affecting public safety or vice versa, c) the specific policy goals were not met (net incarceration rates for nonviolent offenders remained the same, and net incarceration rates for sex offenders decreased) and d) there is suggestive evidence that risk assessment can have an adverse effect on racial disparities in sentencing (among the subset of judicial circuits that responded most to the risk assessment, incarceration rates for black defendants rose by 8 percentage points relative to white defendants).

Abstract
Industry 4.0, is the current manufacturing industry term that combines IoT, Big Data and cloud computing to develop factories that have the ability to make real-time decisions based on large amounts of data. Some of the intended benefits are smarter more automated factories that can detect bottlenecks, deficiencies and constantly align / optimize demand with supply. The underlying assumption is that a smart factory supports the overall company strategy and objectives.

Thus far, much of the Industry 4.0 discussions has focused on the technology transformation tools (i.e. AR, VR, Big Data, Additive Manufacturing, Autonomous Robots & Co-bots, Simulation). In this talk, we’ll discuss the implementation challenges of these tools from a technology, people, process and financial perspective. We will examine the five different levels of automation and the transformational steps shops must adopt across the facility to advance towards the future state of an automated smart factory. Additionally, we’ll review real-world examples of both high-volume manufacturers and the traditional job shop and share where they are along the automation continuum.

A recent body of work, by myself and many others, aims to develop a statistical theory of network data for problems a single network is observed. Of the models studied in this area, graphon models are probably most widely known in statistics. I will explain the relationship between three aspects of this work: (1) Specific models, such as graphon models, graphex models, and edge-exchangeable graphs. (2) Sampling theory for networks, specifically in the case statisticians might refer to as an infinite-population limit. (3) Invariance properties, especially various forms of exchangeability. I will also present recent results that show how statistically relevant results (such as central limit theorems) can be derived from such invariance properties.

Supersymmetric localization is a powerful tool that can provide us with some exact non-perturbative results of quantum field theories. In the first half of this talk we will review its basic idea and some important applications. The results of localization can be used to test some conjectured dualities, for instance the Seiberg-like dualities in various dimensions, and also to help set up new dualities. We will demonstrate these aspects with some examples. In the second half of this talk, we will discuss some recent progress on the localization of 4d N=1 gauge theories. We consider 4d N=1 gauge theories on S2*R2 and compute their partition functions. The results are related to the partition functions of 4d N=1 gauge theories on the Omega background with two epsilon parameters, which can be viewed as building blocks of the Nekrasov partition functions of the 4d N=2 theories on the Omega background. As an application, we use the N=1 partition functions to test various dualities such as the 4d Seiberg duality. Further applications to the 4d Argyres-Douglas theories and the generalized AGT relation will also be discussed. This talk is based on a few papers 1309.3266, 1411.4694, 1505.06207, 1705.01896 and some work in progress.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, with advances in high-performance computing and data science, theory,
simulation, and computation continue to partner with experiment in discovery and innovation in
nanoscience and nanotechnology. Some of the most exciting applications are in the field of biomedicine. Indeed, a detailed understanding of the molecular details of interactions between nanoparticles and biological nanosystems, such as membranes or macromolecules is crucial for obtaining adequate information on mechanisms of action of nanomaterials as well as a perspective on the long-term effects of these materials and their possible toxicological outcomes. In this talk I will report on a new model that we are developing to understand and to predict the interactions between carbon-based nanomaterials and biological membranes using structure-based computational molecular modeling. A rationale on how nanoparticles of different sizes, shape, structure and chemical properties can affect the organization of cellular membranes is also presented. This critical information will help enable the “safe-by-design” production of engineered nanoparticles that are nontoxic or biocompatible, and also allow for the design of antimicrobial nanoparticles for environmental and biomedical applications.

Abstract: We will provide a constructive definition of “Big Biomedical/Health Data” and provide examples of the challenges, algorithms, processes, and tools necessary to manage, aggregate, harmonize, process, and interpret such data. In data science, time complexity frequently manifests as sampling incongruency, heterogeneous scales, and intricate dependencies. We will present the concept of 2D complex-time (kime) and illustrate how the kime-order (time) and kime-direction (phase) affect advanced predictive analytics and scientific inference based on Big Biomedical Data. Kime-representation solves the unidirectional arrows of time problems, e.g., psychological arrow of time reflects the irrevocable past to future flow and thermodynamic arrow of time reflecting the relentless growth of entropy. Albeit kime-phase angles may not always be directly observable, we will illustrate how they can be estimated and used to improve the resulting space-kime modeling, trend forecasting, and predictive data analytics. Simulated data, clinical observations (e.g., neurodegenerative disorders), and multisource census-like datasets (e.g., UK Biobank) will be used to demonstrate time-complexity and inferential-uncertainty.

Abstract:

The question whether to trust the judgments of a few experts or the wisdom-of-the-crowd is not just of scientific but also of political and philosophical interest. Crowd wisdom is usually defined as consensus — the majority vote or the median estimate or forecast. This principle seems fair and simple, but it has a blind spot for information that is new or unfamiliar. The cost of wrong collective decisions can be high in terms of environmental risks underestimated, or promising ideas ignored. The challenge is to combine the virtues of a ‘democratic’ procedure, which allows anyone, irrespective of credentials, to register an opinion, with an 'elitist’ outcome that associates truth with the judgments of a select few. I will describe a simple alternative to democratic averaging by a panel or online crowd. The alternative principle is to select judgments that receive more support than predicted by those same people. I will review some recent evidence bearing on this approach, and discuss extensions to forecasting.

The Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation(RENO) started data-taking from August, 2011 and has observed the disappearance of reactor electron antineutrinos to measure the smallest neutrino mixing angle theta13. The experiment has analyzed roughly 2200 days of data to make an accurate measurement of the oscillation amplitude and frequency based on energy and baseline dependent disappearance of reactor antineutrinos. RENO’s precisely measured flux and spectral shape of reactor antineutrinos has shown a deficit in the flux and an excess in the region of 5 MeV relative to the most commonly used model. Furthermore, it has observed fuel-composition dependent variation of reactor antineutrino yield and spectrum. We find that reevaluation of 235U’s antineutrino yield per fission may solve the reactor antineutrino anomaly. We also report a hint of correlation between the 5-MeV excess and the 235U fuel isotope fraction.

In metals, orbital motions of conduction electrons on the Fermi surface are quantized in magnetic fields, which is manifested by quantum oscillations in electrical resistivity. This Landau quantization is generally absent in insulators. Here, we report a notable exception in an insulator — ytterbium dodecaboride (YbB12). The resistivity of YbB12, which is of a much larger magnitude than the resistivity in metals, exhibits distinct quantum oscillations. These unconventional oscillations arise from the insulating bulk, even though the temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitude follows the conventional Fermi liquid theory of metals with a large effective mass. Quantum oscillations in the magnetic torque are also observed, albeit with a lighter effective mass. Our result reveals a mysterious dual nature of the ground state in YbB12: it is both a charge insulator and a strongly correlated metal.

We study the effect of the factorization of infrared dynamics on the process of particle creation near a black hole horizon. We show that the emission of soft particles factors out of the S-matrix in the fixed-background approximation and to leading order in the soft limit. The factorization is implemented by dressing the incoming and outgoing asymptotic states with clouds of soft photons and soft gravitons. We find that while the soft photon cloud has no effect, the soft graviton cloud induces a phase shift in the Bogolyubov coefficients relating the incoming and outgoing modes. However, the flux of outgoing particles, given by the absolute value of the Bogolyubov coefficient, is insensitive to this phase.

In Kondo insulators, strong correlation and band hybridization lead to a diverging resistance at low temperature. The resistance divergence ends at about 3 Kelvin, a behavior due to the surface conductance. Quantum oscillations were observed in magnetization, but not in electrical resistivity. This difference raised many speculations if a charge-neutral Fermi Surface exists in insulators and these fermions interact only with the magnetic field, not with electric fields. We solved the problem by resolving the Landau Level quantization and Fermi Surface topology in the electrical resistivity a Kondo insulator Ytterbium Dodecaboride (YbB12). The temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitude follows the conventional Fermi liquid theory of metals with a large effective mass. The result suggests that the observed Fermi surface originates from the charged particles. Our finding reveals a mysterious dual nature of the ground state in Kondo insulator YbB12: it is both a charge insulator and a strongly correlated topological metal.
