Saturday Sampler Tour | Rome Through the Eyes of Its Emperors (August 17, 2019 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64005 64005-16067445@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, August 17, 2019 2:00pm
Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

For over 500 years Rome was ruled by emperors. Some enjoyed decades in power, while some lasted less than a year. Being an emperor could be a dangerous job! Come and explore the Kelsey Museum in this tour to see what the emperors of Rome saw when they looked out over their vast empire. Hear what Roman writers said about them at that time. Decide for yourself if you would have liked living in the time of the emperors, whether or not togas and sandals are your style.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Animals abound in the art and artifacts of the ancient Near East, Greece, Egypt, and Rome. On this guided tour, learn more about different aspects of animals in antiquity. We'll take a look at animal-themed artifacts in the Kelsey and ask: Was that animal food? A laborer? A pet? A sacrificial victim? We'll also discuss what kinds of animals were symbols of power and strength, and the meanings different animals had in the ancient world.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Increasing Molecular Coverage in Complex Biological & Environmental Samples Using Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry (September 5, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64170 64170-16179703@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 5, 2019 4:00pm

Mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies are playing a growing role in the analysis of complex samples. Despite significant advances in MS technology, currently it is difficult to obtain measurements of both high throughput and high sensitivity for samples with great dynamic ranges such as biofluids and plant extracts. This problem ultimately results in the inability to effectively account for variation among sample conditions and/or biodiversity leading to inconsequential findings for samples which have great variation. To address this challenge, we have coupled an ion mobility separation (IMS) with MS to afford greatly improved measurement throughput, sensitivity, robustness, and quantitative capabilities for rapid analysis of complex samples. The benefits we have observed in omic studies of biological and environmental samples with IMS-MS will be summarized in this presentation.

Ancient graffiti provide a unique glimpse into the lives of individuals in antiquity. Religious devotion in ancient Kush (a region located in modern-day northern Sudan), involved pilgrimage and leaving informal marks on temples, pyramids, and other monumental structures. These graffiti are found in temples throughout the later (“Meroitic”) period of Kush, when it bordered Roman Egypt. They represent one of the few direct traces of the devotional practices of private people in Kush and hint at individuals’ thoughts, values, and daily lives.

On this tour, led by the curators of the exhibition, explore the times and places in which Kushite graffiti were inscribed through photos, text, and interactive media presentations. At the heart of the show are the hundreds of Meroitic graffiti recently discovered by the Kelsey expedition to El-Kurru in northern Sudan.

Curator tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

From fluctuations to function: The role of dynamics in the mechanism and regulation of translation (September 10, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63255 63255-15603733@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 10, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Chemistry Dow Lab
Organized By: Department of Chemistry

Over the past two decades, stunning breakthroughs in the field of structural biology have continued to produce groundbreaking high-resolution structures of large, multi-component biomolecular machines. Comparative analyses of these static structures reveals the remarkable conformational flexibility of these machines and hints at the significant structural rearrangements that evidently accompany their functional cycles. Unfortunately, the experimental observation and characterization of these conformational dynamics is severely impeded by the size and complexity of biomolecular machines, severely limiting our understanding of the contributions that dynamics make to their functions. Using a combination of single-molecule biophysical-, structural-, and biochemical approaches, my research group aims to overcome these challenges and elucidate the precise roles that the conformational dynamics of biomolecular machines play in driving and controlling their functions. My seminar presentation will primarily focus on our studies of the mechanism and regulation of messenger RNA translation into protein by the ribosome, an essential step in gene expression. Specifically, I will discuss how thermally driven fluctuations of the ribosome and other essential translation components contribute to the mechanism and regulation of translation. Because the ribosome is the target of over half of all currently prescribed antibiotics and because of the growing list of human diseases to which deregulation of translation has been causally linked, our findings hold great promise for informing the development of next-generation antibiotics and small-molecule therapeutic agents that function by modulating the conformational dynamics of the translation machinery. Building on what we have learned from these studies, I will close my presentation by describing recent technological advances that are allowing us to investigate biomolecular dynamics which play important roles in biological mechanisms, but that have thus far remained difficult or impossible to investigate.

In Jamaica’s previous three years at the university she has continued to be lifted by her mentors and values the work of mentorship, this has lead her to accept a position with the Office of Multicultural Initiatives as an Academic Success Partner mentoring freshmen and sophomore students. The past three years at the University and the past 2 years at Semester in Detroit has continued to bring blessings of new and challenging experiences.

Join us for a kid-friendly tour of the Roman exhibits at the Kelsey Museum! We begin by reading aloud some highlights from "G is for Gladiator," written by Debbie and Michael Shoulders and illustrated by Victor Juhasz. Then we explore the galleries to find artifacts pictured in the book like brightly colored frescoes, mosaics, jewelry, coins, and toys. During the tour, replica artifacts will be available for kids to touch and learn from. Take home a scavenger hunt and a merels game board for further discovery! This tour is great for our younger visitors, ages 4–8. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend this tour, please call the Kelsey at 734-764-9304 at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

Beat the cold Michigan winters and study abroad somewhere else next year. The Tübingen program, which is organized through the Center for Global and Intercultural Studies (CGIS), takes place in the Winter term, and it is intended for students who have completed at least German 221/231 by the end of the Fall 2019 term.

The German Department strongly recommends that you precede your stay in Tübingen by attending one or two four-week sessions at the Goethe Institut. This Goethe Institut segment is not part of the CGIS program itself. Please talk to one of German's academic advisors about the Goethe segment (germanadvising@umich.edu).

The CGIS portion in Tübingen will start early in March with a mandatory "Kompaktkurs" (6 credits) or a "Startkurs" (3 credits). While you will be enrolled for the Winter 2020 term at the University of Michigan, you will then take classes during "Sommersemester" at the Universität Tübingen (mid April - late July). You will earn 15-18 credits for Winter 2020: the courses that you take in Tübingen can be language courses for international students or regular university courses. Various university courses outside the English Department are taught in English.

Tübingen credits can be used to satisfy degree requirements for a German major or minor.

Please note that you must attend a First Step session in order to study abroad with CGIS. During the Winter term, First Step sessions are offered every Monday through Friday from 5-5:30 p.m. in Weiser Hall, Suite 200.

For more information about the Tübingen program and to apply, go to: https://mcompass.umich.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10248
