It is expected that catenated compounds of germanium might function as luminescent or optical materials once a sufficient number of germanium atoms are connected together in the chain. We have prepared and characterized the penta- and hexagermanes Pri3Ge(GePh2)nGePri3 (n = 3 or 4), where the hexagermane is the longest structurally characterized linear oligogermane reported to date. Initial studies indicated that these molecules were luminescent in solution, and we have now investigated its photophysical properties of Pri3Ge(GePh2)4GePri3 in the solid state. The hexagermane exhibits temperature dependent absorbance and emission spectra, where vibrational fine structure is observed below 240 K. In addition, a blue emission in the visible region is observed upon excitation at 300 nm at 80 K. The synthesis of the two oligogermanes Pri3Ge(GePh2)nGePri3 (n = 3 or 4) and the nature of its absorbance and emission properties will be discussed in conjunction with DFT investigations. The structure/property relationships of other oligogermanes, including the branched systems (Ph3Ge)3GeX (X = H, F, Cl, Br, I, Ph, or GePh3), will also be discussed.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships provide tuition and stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. The priority is to encourage the study of less commonly taught modern languages. FLAS Fellowships are administered by the University of Michigan Area Studies Centers and are awarded competitively through annual fellowship competitions. The U.S. Department of Education (US/ED) funds these awards under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act. The amount of funding and number of awards are contingent upon annual US/ED program approval, federal regulations, as well as continued congressional funding, all of which may change from year to year.

Academic Year in Freiburg 2018/2019

Friday, December 1: Early Application Deadline

The best way to get to know Germany really well is to live there for an extended time. Here is a recent article how studying abroad positively affects your career chances: https://www.iie.org/en/Why-IIE/Announcements/2017-10-02-Gaining-an-Employment-Edge

By studying in Freiburg for a year, you can practically earn all credits required for a German major and may possibly get distribution credits and credits towards a second major; and you will live in one of the most attractive and desired places in Germany. Sophomores are allowed to participate in this program.

Eligibility:
* Minimum 3.0 GPA
* Good academic standing
* Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing by Fall 2018
* Completion of German 232 or equivalent prior to September 2018

The 2018/19 consortium program will be led by University of Michigan Professor Kerstin Barndt, who will also be teaching some of the courses. Feel free to contact her with questions: barndt@umich.edu! The program also has a very savvy Associate Director, who lives in Freiburg throughout the entire year.

Tuition for this year-long program is covered by a program fee ($7,500/semester), and students receive University of Michigan in-residence credit for the courses they take during the Academic Year in Freiburg. Students are not required to pay University of Michigan tuition during the year abroad. Additional costs include an administrative fee ($1,200), travel, room, and board. Students remain eligible for financial aid. In addition, the German Department will reduce the program fee for all applicants by $1,000 this year. Further funding opportunities (up to $3,000) are available from the department as well; to inquire, please contact germandept@umich.edu.

For more information, see the AYF website at http://www.ayf.uni-freiburg.de/.

A short informational video is available at https://umich.app.box.com/s/3fm5443caoz2bioald1r8jrok4o20qe9.

Here is the link to the application website from CGIS (Center for Global and Intercultural Study): https://mcompass.umich.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&Program_ID=10247

Apply early! The early application deadline (December 1) guarantees early consideration and advanced notice, making admitted students eligible to apply for further funding opportunities.

Please note: Although this program's application deadline is February 1, students who apply by December 1 will receive advanced notification of admission. Students will then be eligible to apply for the DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship, due January 31.

Even if you were not chosen for the DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship, LSA students in this program may be eligible for additional scholarships through the University of Michigan.

A lonely female accountant falls for a man who seems to have stepped out of a Greek myth; a scholar uncovers a lost Shakespearean couplet and decides to quit academia; a celebrated author experiments with downloading a story from her brain and uploading it to another. In these and other stories, Douglas Trevor explores situations--both unsettling and comic--in which people lose their bearings, reinvent themselves, and resolve, sometimes haplessly, to make sense of their lives. Characters are kidnapped by teenagers; they are bitten by raccoons. Some of them go on Prozac; while others rely on bowling to persevere. Running through these nine stories is the ghostly, and at times material, presence of books themselves. What does it mean to turn to books for comfort? Or to uncover the ways in which the stories we absorb and revisit not only open up worlds but also close them off? In a variety of moods and settings, The Book of Wonders reminds us not only of the struggle to connect, but also of what the most unlikely of people may realize they share.

Douglas Trevor is the author of the novel Girls I Know (SixOneSeven Books, 2013), and the short story collection The Thin Tear in the Fabric of Space (University of Iowa Press, 2005). Thin Tear won the 2005 Iowa Short Fiction Award and was a finalist for the 2006 Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award for First Fiction. Girls I Know won the 2013 Balcones Fiction Prize. Doug’s short fiction has appeared most recently as a Ploughshares Solo, and in The Iowa Review, New Letters, and the Michigan Quarterly Review. He has also had stories in The Paris Review, Glimmer Train, Epoch, Black Warrior Review, The New England Review, and about a dozen other literary magazines. Doug lives in Ann Arbor, where he is the current Director of the Helen Zell Writers’ Program, and a Professor of Renaissance Literature in the English Department at the University of Michigan.

Peter Ho Davies is the author of two novels, The Fortunes (winner of the Anisfield-Wolf Award, and the Chautauqua Prize) and The Welsh Girl (long-listed for the Man Booker Prize), and two short story collections, The Ugliest House in the World(winner of the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize) and Equal Love (A New York Times Notable Book).

His work has appeared in Harpers, The Atlantic, The Paris Review, The Guardian and Washington Post among others, and has been widely anthologized, including selections for Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards and Best American Short Stories. In 2003 Granta magazine named him among its Best of Young British Novelists.

Davies is also a recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and is a winner of the PEN/Malamud Award.

Born in Britain to Welsh and Chinese parents, he now makes his home in the US. He has taught at the University of Oregon and Emory University, and is currently on the faculty of the Helen Zell MFA Program in Creative Writing at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

When exposed to a constant electric field, ions in the gas phase move at constant drift velocities; the proportionality constant between an ion’s velocity and the applied electric field is termed the ion mobility. Correspondingly, ion mobility spectrometry (IM) is a gas phase separation technique in which analyte ions (as small as atomic ions and up to charged aerosol particles) are separated temporally or spatially in an electric. Recent years have seen increased usage of IM in two specific applications. First, it is used as a pre-separation technique with mass spectrometry to better identify analytes in complex mixtures. Second, IM is used as a tool to characterize the structures of protein and multiprotein complex ions in the gas phase. In both of these applications, IM is used primarily as a structural characterization tool, and the chemical information obtained in measurement is limited to collision cross section inference (a parameter directly linked to ion mobility). This presentation will discuss novel applications of IM developed in our laboratory group, where measurements go beyond collision cross section determination. Specifically, in conjunction with mass spectrometry, we are developing techniques to examine ion-neutral complex formation in the gas phase (with applications in chemical warfare agent detection, fundamental studies of ion-induced nucleation, and measurement of the properties of atmospheric nanoclusters) and as a standalone technique we utilize IM to examine nanoparticle-protein conjugation. Also discussed will be the potential application of ion mobility-mass spectrometry in air pollution monitoring, using newly developed data inversion schemes to isolate atmospheric aerosol populations from one another.

What the Russian Revolution meant for Art and Culture (December 5, 2017 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47243 47243-10827433@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, December 5, 2017 7:00pm

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was an earthshaking event, the first time in history the working class and oppressed took power. It opened up a new era in human history. The Revolution inevitably had the most profound implications for art and culture, not only in Russia but worldwide. It shattered old ideas and relationships, and opened up enormous new possibilities. Soviet art and film of the early 1920s began to reflect these possibilities, before the rise of Stalinism violently cut them off.Art today has reached an impasse, bound up with the general crisis of capitalist society. Dominated to a large extent by skepticism and postmodernist cynicism, along with gender and racial politics, very far removed from the conditions of life of wide layers of the population, art needs a new perspective. The lessons and experience of the Russian Revolution are critical in this regard. David Walsh, arts editor of the World Socialist Web Site, will discuss the impact and influence of the Russian Revolution on art and culture, and their meaning today.

Enabling Medicinal Chemistry with Synthesis and Technology (December 7, 2017 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/41361 41361-9170360@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 7, 2017 4:00pm

Organized By: Department of Chemistry

In the Beeler Research Group we take a multidisciplinary approach toward developing small molecule tools for human disease. This lecture will focus on new technologies and synthetic strategies that provide a foundation for our medicinal chemistry programs. It will highlight ongoing efforts to develop platforms that enable us to explore and leverage the biological activities of complex natural products. A common theme in our lab, and in this lecture, is the use of flow chemistry to enable critical reactions. Why flow chemistry? Reactions have been carried out in batch vessels for over two centuries and amazingly the tools chemists use have remained largely unchanged. As such, many of the challenges presented by batch reactions are still unsolved. Issues related to mass transfer, heat transfer, or photon penetration can be exceptionally challenging in batch reactors, but are often overcome in flow. Ultimately, I hope to demonstrate how flow chemistry provides us a tool for development of new and more efficient reactions that are robust, highly scalable, and provide access to complex and novel chemotypes.

We will join together in viewing our namesake, Dead Poets Society. And, as usual, we will have FREE PIZZA! Think of this as your DPS 101 Final, where you are graded on how well you enjoy yourself. Or, if you prefer, enjoy yourself by not thinking of it as an exam (recommended). Either way, it's going to be the single GREATEST final meeting you could imagine (try not to imagine too much).  For those of you who have been attending meetings, whether once or regularly, we thank you, and hope this is a fitting way to head into break. For those who haven't made it out to any meetings, we hope the different day is more aligned to your schedule. Either way, we hope to see you there! Let's give this club one last hurrah before getting into a more serious finals mode (or perhaps a break from the already-begun seriousness).

The group has yellow signs with "Max Kade Deutschtisch" to identify where they are sitting. For questions, contact Nico (nmpozsar@umich.edu).

German students at all levels (101 and up) are welcome at all Max Kade events.
