Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Our prisons are overflowing and the costs in human and monetary terms are enormous. How and why have we sentenced the over 2.2 million adults currently in our prison systems?

This class discusses how judges decide criminal sentences and how politicians control those sentencing decisions. After 8 years of attempting to reduce our prison populations, has the new attorney general signaled a return to the mass incarceration resulting from the “War on Drugs”?

We discuss the fact that more than half of all federal prisoners are serving sentences for drug offenses, and the huge proportion of drug-related offenders in our state prisons. Alternative approaches to drug abuse are discussed.

Instructor the Hon. Donald E. Shelton, who directs the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at UM-Dearborn, will lead this 90 minute session for those 50 and above.

During the last part of the twentieth century, the University of Michigan’s Central Campus underwent a remarkable transformation. Many new buildings were added but the amount of open space was preserved. Circulation systems were reorganized and nationalized, parking moved from surface lots to structures, and the order and visual appeal of the campus was significantly improved.

In this lecture, the various techniques employed by the campus planners, architects, and landscape designers to achieve these outcomes will be explained and the interrelationship between the overall planning strategies and the individual implementation projects will be described.

This lecture for those 50 and above by Fred Mayer who was the University Planner for The University of Michigan from 1968 to 2003 will meet for two hours.

We will read and discuss “Blind Spots” by Madeleine L. Van Hecke, which explains why smart people do dumb things. Luckily, our minds work for us (mostly) 80 to 90 percent of the time. But what about the rest of the time when we jump to conclusions, don’t allow ourselves the time to think things through or can’t see the forest from the trees.

This book contains anecdotes and tactics to avoid forehead-slapping duh moments. It is derived from research on cognitive myths, problems and critical thinking. Please read the Preface and Chapter 1 for the first session.

Instructor Gerry Lapidus will lead this study group for those 50 and over for two hours on Mondays from January 22 through February 26.

Christianity spread by the spoken and written word, and by pictures. Jesus’ followers went out into the Roman Empire to tell stories of his life. For two hundred years scribes recorded their tales. Literate Apostles like Paul wrote letters that belong among the world’s great literature. Unknown artists painted portraits, stories, symbols, and signs.

This course for those 50 and over traces the evolution of Christian art focusing on Eastern Christian churches. We will include a field trip to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church to view newly installed icons.

Instructor Mike Kapetan has created art for churches of all denominations, synagogues and Buddhist temples.

This study group will meet for two hours on Mondays from January 22 through February 12.

We will read and write with the objective of bringing places to life. This course for those 50 and over is open to novel writing, short stories, memoir and life writing, as well as
poetry.

Whether writing of home or places of exile -- we will move through time with characters and through ideas -- by the examination of setting. Whether you bring material or an idea, or neither-- we will get ‘there’. We may generate new work or prioritize workshop activity (and we’ll be reading a variety of excerpts for inspiration). Be open. Be willing. Be kind.

Instructor Clarisse Baleja Saidi, a novelist and recent graduate of the Helen Zell MFA Program at the University of Michigan, will conduct these 90 minute sessions on Tuesdays from January 23 through March 27.

All cultures, past and present, have used mathematics to make sense of their lives. In this course we will explore some of the ways that different cultures have used mathematics for counting, trading, measuring, keeping track of time, scheduling religious practices,
recreation, passing on cultural traditions, and design.

This course for those 50 and over requires no expertise in mathematics but should interest those who are curious about other cultures and how they lived their lives. The course will be fun and lively with lots of hands on activities.

Joan Cohen Jones is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at EMU, where she taught mathematics for teachers. She is interested in the history of mathematics, especially how different cultures have used mathematical ideas throughout history, both formally and informally.

This course will meet for two hours on Mondays from February 5 through February 19.

Readers Theater provides an opportunity to engage with a literary work to better understand and appreciate the playwright’s point of view and message. This will be done through choral readings, practice script readings of three short plays, reading with a script before members of the class, and discussion of each play.

Introduction to Readers Theater helps create and foster community by providing
a welcoming environment where all feel valued, and where all are able to form meaningful connections with one another. This class for those 50 and over will begin to develop a cohesive group that enjoys reading aloud and participating in Senior Theater.

Instructor Terrence Madden will lead this two hour study group on Wednesdays from February 7 through February 21.

Prosecutors claim that jurors who watch shows like “CSI” on television are “wrongfully” acquitting guilty criminals when they don’t see the kind of forensic science evidence that they see on TV. The media has labeled this the “CSI Effect”. But is it true?

This class for those 50 and over discusses empirical research into real juror expectations and demands for scientific evidence, whether it might better be called the “tech effect”, and how the criminal justice system needs to adjust to these modern jurors.

This study group will meet for 90 minutes and will be led by Donald Shelton, who directs the Criminology and Criminal Justice Program at UM-Dearborn.

Discussions will focus on novels by writers from the Holy Land (Muslims, Christians, Jews, and atheists). How do these writers see themselves and other parties of the conflict? How do these writers perceive “resolving” Palestine/Israel conflict? What do these writers dream of for their generation and beyond? Do we, concerned Americans, see that part of the world in ways similar or different from the ways those writers see it? Why do we agree or disagree with these writers? Participants in this course will understand Palestine/Israel conflict through the eyes of novelists from Palestine/Israel.

This study group for those 50 and over will be led by instructor Adnan Salhi for two hours on Thursdays: February 15, March 29, and April 26.

Thought you didn’t have enough money for travel? House sitting makes it possible, as it takes the cost of lodging out of the equation. We have tended homes in Australia, Spain, Denmark, France, and the U.K., allowing us to live as locals for weeks at a time.

In this study group for those 50 and over we show you the match-up websites where you meet homeowners, how to post your profile, and how to stand out in order to win the best house sits. Handouts include a 100-page house sitting e-book written by instructor Josie Schneider. She and instructor Conrad Knutsen will lead this 90 minute session.

This interactive course will explore oral history as a way of sharing and documenting life stories in creative ways through audio recordings, videos, photography, writing, and other forms of media.

We will learn what oral history is and why it is important as both an object of study and a way of “telling” the past. We will practice recording our own oral histories and those of others. We will also have workshops for individual projects, with the goal of creating a finished piece by the end of the course.

Instructor Moniek van Rheenen is a linguistic anthropology Ph.D. student at the UM who conducts oral histories for her research in Indonesia. This study group for those 50 and over will be held on Mondays from March 5 to April 9.

OLLI needs more leaders for its popular writing groups. Learn from Eleanor Linn about a few of the current groups, their focus, ground rules, role of the leader, and expectations for participants. This class will give you the opportunity to look at your own skills and interests and help you decide what kind of writing group you would most like to lead. Facilitating a writing group can be fun and immensely engaging. It usually provides strong social support for those involved, as regular writers work together on improving their skills and reflecting on important experiences in their lives.
This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet on Monday March 12.There is no fee.

These sessions are based on lectures offered through the UMich Teach-Out Series on the EdX platform. The course’s learning goals, as described by the Teach-Out, are to 1) distinguish between “news” and other forms of information; 2) evaluate the credibility of information claims; 3) identify psychological and logical fallacies that influence how we interpret information; 4) critically examine a news story and identify how it was produced.

Participants will listen to lectures from UM professors and other experts, then engage in discussion facilitated by Sigrid Hermon and Ann Tomlanovich. Additional materials and class exercises might be included.

The study group sessions for those 50 and over will meet every other Monday from March 12 to April 23.

Bacteria play both beneficial and harmful roles in our world. Using the book “I Contain Multitudes” by Ed Yong, this course provides general knowledge and current research about how these bacteria (the microbiome) impact animals, humans and their health, and even our homes.
Specific topics include how scientists currently study the microbiome, how bacteria are beneficial to their animal hosts and how they can become harmful, and approaches to modulating the number and type of bacteria present in an animal host. Dr. Rebecca Pollet received a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina in 2016 and is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Microbiology Department at the UM where she works on the human microbiome.
This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet on Tuesdays from March 13-May 15.

Are you curious about the many forms that life takes on this planet? We will start with an overview of taxonomy--the art and science of naming living things--and a discussion of just what it means for something to be alive. We will then proceed on a journey through the tree of life, briefly glimpsing each of the major groups: animals, fungi, plants, protists, bacteria, and viruses.

Along the way we will discuss research into the purpose and function of organisms, using a combination of lecture and discussion with outside readings. Instructor William Davis is a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan who hopes to share his joy in learning about new organisms.

This study group for those 50 and over will be held on Wednesdays from March to May 2.

Mystery lovers, this is the group for you. Instead of reading familiar authors, we will be searching for new talent. So, bring a list of your favorite authors and share them with us.

Each month the group will select an author and you can read a book of your choice from that author’s repertoire. The following month we will discuss the author’s ideas and writing techniques to learn how they are applied across his/her books. We will also talk about what we liked or disliked about the books we read. Please read any book by Alafair Burke for the first session.

This study group for those 50 and over will be led by instructor Sydney Kaufman. In order to allow time for the readings between classes, the group will be held on March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, and July 11.

A central theme of American life – that all children should have a reasonable chance to live better than their parents – is no longer so true. Children have not fared well in an age of fragile families, educational challenges, drugs, crumbling communities, and disappearing jobs.

We will read and discuss the title book by Robert Putnam, who examines why and how opportunities for upward mobility are diminishing and what can be done to restore them. Please read chapter 1 of "Our Kids" for the first session.

In 2012, physicists at the world’s largest particle accelerator at CERN, in Geneva, Switzerland, announced to great fanfare the discovery of a fundamental particle in physics called the Higgs boson, culminating a decades long search and putting to rest what was called “the central problem in particle physics.” What exactly is the Higgs boson and why was its discovery so important? In this course we will view and discuss a Teaching Company series of lectures of the same title by Cal Tech physics professor and author Sean Carroll, who describes for a lay audience what particle physics is all about and how the Higgs gives mass to everything in the universe,
making life possible. There will be two lectures per session with 20 minutes of discussion following each. Craig Stephan is a physicist who worked for 30+ years at Ford Research and Argonne National Laboratories. He has led several OLLI discussion groups, including ones on cosmology and climate change.
This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet Mondays March 19-April 23.

The U.S. Congress passed a ‘tax reform’ package as 2017 ended. Sixty percent of Americans believe that the GOP tax package will mostly help the wealthiest among us. But will this widespread disapproval translate into political costs or electoral losses for Republicans?

The answer may surprise you! Social science research indicates the average citizen may tolerate this situation. Upcoming elections will test the findings of the research. You will want to hear this fascinating presentation by Stephanie Leiser, PhD. and Lecturer in Public Policy at the UM Ford School of Public Policy.

Following a discussion, members write during class and voluntarily share their writing with the group. Sample prompts might include: Write about a fear you have about growing older or describe a strength or positive attribute that has emerged in you as you’ve grown older.

Beth Spencer is a geriatric social worker, avid reader, and writer with decades of teaching experience. This study group for those 50 and over will be held on Wednesdays from March 28 to April 25.

Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot is one of the most distinctive characters in detective mystery fiction. His portrayal in film provides an actor with a considerable challenge in conveying the character. Few have been ambitious enough to try.

We’ll watch 4 actors portray this character in films based on 3 of Christie’s novels, including a rarely seen adaptation from Japan. George Ferrell is a retired instructor, and Christie and detective mystery fiction fan, who has been researching the history of Christie on film. Last fall he led the study group on Miss Marple films.

Four significant international films from the mid-twentieth century were, in part, a reaction to the recent world war and also an endeavor to transcend Hollywood’s traditional filmmaking. These films are sometimes called “art films” because of their stylistic innovations and the humanism that fills their images and narratives.

The class will screen and discuss "The Bicycle Thieves" (Italy,1948);
"Ugetsu" (Japan, 1953); "Winter Light" (Sweden,1962); and "Jules and Jim" (France,1962). Ira Konigsberg is Professor Emeritus of Film and Literature at the University of Michigan.

We’ll explore how Jesus interacted with and treated women during his ministry and how they responded. Looking into questions like: What were the cultural norms for women during Jesus’ life? Was Jesus a feminist? What do Paul’s letter to the Romans and John’s Gospel tell us about early women disciples? Then we will discuss women’s roles in the very early Christian communities up to about 300 A.D.

The New Testament will be used as well as several other references. There will be time for questions and discussion and some possibly surprising revelations. An outline and list of references will be provided. Over the past 50 years, there has been a wealth of academic and research interest in these topics and well over 100 books have been written.

This study group for those 50 and over will be led by instructor Peggy Clough on April 11 and April 18.

In this hands-on workshop, the instructions are simple: Keep your hand moving, dig deep, give yourself permission to write drech, tell the truth. I’ll give prompts and we’ll work in 15-minute bursts; then we’ll share what we wrote. For experienced writers and novices alike, this practice is a powerful tool for cutting through to your authentic voice. Bring pen and paper and be prepared to use them. Tanya Shaffer is an award-winning playwright and author of the travel memoir "Somebody’s Heart is Burning: A Woman Wanderer in Africa". Her stories and essays have appeared on Salon.com and in numerous anthologies.

Dreams are typically important unconscious messages, bringing issues from the past and the present. They often contain direct or disguised wishes and/or fears. In this class we will discuss typical dreams: the recurring dream; the remembered dream of the past; the “I’m not prepared” dream (e.g. taking the final exam, but haven’t read the text).

The instructor will discuss dreams of some patients and invite class members (including himself) to bring their own. The goal is to help make better sense of these nightly messages, pointing out some of the playful and significant insights brought to light. Mr. Chethik is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the UM.

This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet on Tuesdays from April 17- May 22. There will be no class on May 8.

What are the personal qualities needed to live a good life? Philosophers since Aristotle have discussed this question. The term “moral virtues” refers to the character traits that are helpful or even necessary for a well-lived life; moral vices are those character traits that are obstacles to living well. We will explore moral virtues such as compassion and forgiveness.
We will read what some philosophers have written, but we will especially discuss the virtues and vices that people in the group propose and wish to explore. Elias Baumgarten, Ph.D., has taught philosophy at UM-Dearborn for 46 years and has served on ethics committees at UM Hospital for 30 years.
This Study Group is for those over 50, and will meet on Wednesday May 23-June 13.

"Kokedama (苔玉, in English, literally "moss ball") is a ball of soil, covered with moss, on which an ornamental plant grows. The idea has its origins in Japan, where it is a combination of the nearai 根洗い (literally "root wash," but meaning "no pot") bonsai and kusamono planting styles. Today, Kokedama is very popular in Japanese gardens." --Wikipedia
