Mindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing, focus, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection, silence, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds, moment to moment, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.

On Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program

University of Michigan is currently trying to reckon with and heal from multiple high profile sexual misconduct cases, some of which involve (former) faculty members and administrators from science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program wants to give you an opportunity to process your reactions to the most recent news about President Schlissel as well as other, very public, instances of scientists behaving badly. Regardless of your own personal experience with sexual and gender-based misconduct, learning about the inexcusable behavior of senior scientists at U-M may be impacting you. WISE invites all students and postdoctoral scholars who have concerns about gender equity in STEM to join a community conversation (via Zoom) on Thursday, January 27th from 5:30-6:30 PM. In addition to small group discussions, we hope to hear how WISE can best support the women in science and engineering on campus right now.

Registration is recommended but not required.

Please join us at the annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk that AFSPUM is hosting at the University of Michigan this Spring!

This event takes place nationwide and brings together those who are affected by suicide and those who support them, to raise awareness and much-needed funds, strongly send the message that suicide is preventable, and that remind others that no one is alone.

It will take place on Sunday, April 3rd, 2022 at Ferry Field, Ann Arbor with the opening ceremony kicking off the event at 10am. We’d love for you to join us and spread the word :)

Students, staff, alumni, and community members can register for the walk for FREE, form a team, and invite others to join you at www.tinyurl.com/uofm2022ootd.

There is no required fundraising minimum, although any amount you and your networks are able to contribute helps invest in suicide prevention research and educational programming.

Together we can change the conversation and create a world without suicide. It’s up to Walkers like us to make a difference. We look forward to seeing you at the Walk!

Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you nourish your spirit and heal your body and mind.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

Advanced Wellness techniques are taught on the first Friday of the Month and that session will be about 45 mins.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

Join us in community to practice mindfulness meditation, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal, largely-guided, practice utilizes evidence-based cognitive training that bolsters one's ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat.  This weekly mindfulness practice encourages present moment, non-judgemental, awareness – noticing where your focus and attention are and continually inviting attention to current mind and body sensations in a kind and compassionate way.

Mindfulness meditation opens the possibility to pause, gain perspective, attend to the present, and respond accordingly. In our ever-changing, complex, and challenging world, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.

Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

Heartfulness Guided Meditation (September 23, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88544 88544-21791397@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 23, 2022 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is an eight-week program designed to teach people how to live more mindfully, even in the face of challenges like depression and anxiety. The course teaches a blend of cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness techniques as a way to interrupt unhelpful thinking patterns and increase non-judgmental awareness of the present moment.

As a result of this course, you can expect an increase in self-compassion and less reactivity in challenging situations. Participants report feeling more connected to themselves and more satisfied in relationships with others.

Prospective participants should call the Psych Clinic at (734) 764-3471 to schedule a virtual individual screening visit. This preliminary screening will allow you to work with a clinician to ensure that the group is right for you.

The University of Michigan’s Eisenberg Family Depression Center in partnership with the Michigan Engineering's C.A.R.E. Center, will offer students, faculty and staff a free opportunity to determine whether they are experiencing some of the symptoms of depression, and would benefit from further evaluation.

The confidential screenings for depression and related conditions will be provided by trained mental health professionals.

National Depression Screening Day is a public education program - the feedback provided after a screening is informational, not diagnostic. Based on screening results, mental health professionals may recommend a more comprehensive evaluation.

Free screenings are a good way for people to find out if depression might be the cause of feelings they’ve been experiencing, including prolonged sadness, anxiety, irritability, loss of pleasure in activities, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness and even physical pain.

Location: Off Campus Location

At WISE we know that the different dimensions of wellness are something that we should focus on every day not only in times of stress. We have created the Wellness Everyday Series to aid the WISE community’s exposure to different aspects of their wellness and develop a practice of wellness every day. We look forward to having you join us in the WISE Office in room 3236 of the Undergraduate Science Building. When you are well it helps the community to become well.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Group Therapy - Fall 2022 (November 1, 2022 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/98539 98539-21796894@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 1, 2022 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University Psychological Clinic
