Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Award-winning guitarist, educator, and performer Rollie Tussing makes a raggedy brand of music informed by the era of 78 rpm records, juke joints, and street performers. He composes a lot of his own songs and has a knack for reworking an old obscure tune, finding beauty in the forgotten scratches, pops and grooves of his esoteric record collection. After winning the National Slide Guitar Competition in 2001 Rollie moved with his wife to Portland, Oregon. He spent the next decade touring, performing, writing songs and playing with some of the best regional and touring musicians the West Coast offered. In 2011 with their second child on the way, Rollie and his wife decided to relocate to the Midwest to be closer to family and to tap into the artistic resources in the nation's midsection. There’s fingerstyle guitar, forgotten old music, and great old songs—a fabulous evening all around.

An Acoustic Christmas with Over the Rhine (December 3, 2022 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/98349 98349-21796529@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, December 3, 2022 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Named for a tough but enduringly creative neighborhood north of downtown Cincinnati, Over the Rhine is the duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist. Their ethereal sounds—dreamy, sweeping, highly literate and melancholy—have drawn comparisons to the likes of Cowboy Junkies.

Says Leslie Benson of the Dayton City Paper: "The music of Cincinnati-based folk/roots band Over the Rhine seeps into you with a rich hunger—each note a separate, glimmering cloud-diamond." And someone once described OTR"s music as a mash-up of spirituality, whimsy and sensuality ("thank you, thank you, thank you," they say).

If you've never heard Over the Rhine, this is a great time to check them out—their December shows draw on their superb holiday albums, which bring renewal and a sense of the season to all.

It’s rare for an artist to bridge the divide between critical acclaim and dedicated fan engagement. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Her music has straddled the folk, Americana and indie rock genres over the course of her 20 year career, and over that time, her bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of life in song has struck a chord with those listeners who crave authenticity and depth.

Chris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist and her flair as a lyricist have garnered her favorable comparisons to Chan Marshall, Bruce Springsteen, and Patty Griffin. Over many years of touring on both sides of the Atlantic, she has shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as The Lumineers, Gregory Alan Isakov, The Cowboy Junkies, Haley Heynderickx, and Ani DiFranco. She has had her songs featured on such television shows as Brothers and Sisters, Covert Affairs and Shameless, as well as a song featured in the Sundance featured indie film, The Royal Road. Along the way, Chris has remained truly independent, selling nearly 50,000 albums through her own label, Sad Rabbit Records.

It happens in the middle of Michigan in the heart of December. Since 2007, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year, but the spirit of the event is community, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. "Ebird"is Erin Zindle, lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin's budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles, horns, bagpipes, guitars, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained, surprised, cheered, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to four presentations this year for its 15th anniversary, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

Once there was not is an evening-length multimedia dance theater performance by Master of Fine Arts in Dance candidate Leah O'Donnell, whose thesis work is in two parts: the premiere of O'Donnell's screen dance, Blue Burrow, immediately followed by a live performance featuring six dancers and one singer. Runtime is approximately one hour.

Blue Burrow is a short film fully immersed in the sun, sand, and water of Lake Huron. The shore is the meeting place for characters of different species, while the world underwater comes to represent the subconscious. Perspectives shift from fish to human to sun, and metaphors about our relationship to the natural world emerge.
The live performance portion of Once There Was Not explores impermanence, contradiction, and ambiguity through a surreal lens. At once dark and nostalgic, six dancers dodge Death, the oldest friend, and find purgatory in a pub, forgetting and remembering bits of life along the way.

Friday night’s performance will also be livestreamed:

Indecent is a one-act play recounting the controversy surrounding the play "The God of Vengeance" and following it from its productions in Europe to its 1923 Broadway production, during which the cast was arrested on charges of indecency because of the lesbian love story depicted in the show. Indecent is a story of Jewishness, queerness, love, artistic freedom, homophobia, the dying Yiddish language and culture, the stories we've lost, and the need to create theatre and beauty even in the worst of times.

Yes, Nefesh Mountain is a bluegrass band. Yes, some of their lyrics are sung in Hebrew. No, it isn’t a gimmick or a parody. And, no, it’s not klezmer music. Now that we’ve got that straight, let’s hear Nefesh Mountain for what it really is: a soulful, euphoric, folk-flavored outpouring of hope and joy, propelled by the kind of crisp, crystalline picking that gives lyrics wings. It’s a distinctively Nefesh Mountain sound. Doni Zasloff and Eric Lindberg have attracted high-powered musicians on their recordings, including Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Tony Trischka, and David Grier, aided by Nefesh Mountain’s touring band members, Alan Grubner on fiddle and Tim Kiah on bass. A dazzling picker in his own right, Lindberg provides lead guitar and banjo throughout, while Zasloff soars with some of the most melodic, incisive and soul-stirring vocals we’ve heard since Mary Travers first took the spotlight. Come hear the band Rolling Stone called “a master class in string music”!

In 2002, Vienna released her debut album Waking Hour, landing her on NPR’s Weekend Edition, The Late Show with David Letterman, and the top of Amazon’s music charts. Four more albums followed, most recently Aims in 2013, which became the first album to win four Independent Music Awards; she also composed the music for The Fourth Messenger by playwright Tanya Shaffer, which premiered in 2013. Along with Vienna’s captivating live performances and thoughtful online presence, her work has built a devoted following across generations as well as continents.

Still, other pursuits have always beckoned. A computer science major before she was a recording artist, Vienna is a nerd at heart, as comfortable in spreadsheets as the spotlight. She returned to academia in 2010 to study environmental sustainability, which led to a new career working on climate change, energy and waste issues. She also became a “bonus parent” to her partner’s two kids, and in early 2020 welcomed a newborn addition to the family - just in time for pandemic lockdown. That year was eye-opening for her. “So much of what I’d taken for granted my whole life just broke wide open,” she says. “I learned a lot about what it means to hold two truths in your head at the same time, as the saying goes. Things can be both dire and full of possibility. Both kindness and fierceness are so very necessary.”

She wondered: what if two songs, with seemingly contradictory perspectives, were written so they would “mash up” together into a duet? That fall - sometimes while breastfeeding - Vienna composed a pair of songs called “We’ve Got You”: one about being a beacon to your community, the other about leaning on that community in your darkest hour. It’s some of the most intricate and impassioned songwriting she's ever done, and when she performed it in a live-streamed concert that December, the audience response was electric.

Fittingly for a piece about replenishment and connection, “We’ve Got You” marks the start of a new chapter for Vienna. “I’ve found a rabbit hole I’m excited to go down further,” she says. Her long-distance phase with music is over; let the reunion begin.

Doubling as a platform for activism, the music of Fela Kuti was a unique blend of jazz, funk, and African influences. Performed by an African big-band of unusual instrumentation, Fela’s music rolled out in an extended, hypnotic fashion. His political vocals fell somewhere between melody and musical speech. While the Afrobeat music of Nigeria’s Fela Kuti remains singularly unique, it typically fails to gain deserved attention in the world of modern-day performance.

Join us for a rare opportunity to hear this music authentically reproduced. Originally sponsored by the University of Michigan “MCube” initiative, this performance unites UofM faculty & musicians from the Flint and Ann Arbor campuses with local professionals. The project, led by Brian DiBlassio, is based on note-for-note transcriptions of Fela’s work, with our featured artist from Cincinnati, Baoku Moses, performing the role of Fela. Ensemble members include trumpeter Ingrid Racine, tenor saxophonist Andrew Bishop, baritone saxophonist Alex Harding, guitarist Ray Ureña, bassist Ben Rolston, percussionist Jonathan Ovalle, conga player Owl DiBlassio, and Brian DiBlassio on keyboards.

If you'd like to get an idea of the depth of southeastern Michigan's Celtic music scene, the Ceili is a great place to do it. Fiddler Mick Gavin, the organizer of the Ceili and a frequent performer there, was recently inducted into the Irish Music Hall of Fame.

Tonight’s show features six Michigan songwriters: contemporary country-folk road warrior Annie Capps, Irish-American chanteuse Kitty Donohoe, four-time Detroit Music Award winner Jan Krist, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich of the "Music to Cure What Ails You" duo Mustard's Retreat, and southeastern Michigan folk veteran Matt Watroba. Come and be a fly on the wall as the exchange of creative ideas flows freely! "To have any one of these songwriters perform at Trinity House is a real treat," says promoter Bill Keith. "To have them perform together is unbelievable." The Yellow Room Gang has been around for 15 years now, with all the members coming up with new music all the while.

British guitar legend Albert Lee, regarded by many as one of the world's finest guitar players, with a career spanning more than 50 years, needs no introduction for country music, blues, and rock fans. Widely hailed for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique, Albert Lee helped to redefine country guitar for a whole generation of players with his song "Country Boy." Albert's many career highlights include two Grammy wins, five years in the Eric Clapton band, and stints with the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman, The Crickets, the Everly Brothers, Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and many more. Take it from Emmylou, who says, "When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth, I'll be able to say—with pride if that's allowed—that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee." Come by and pick up a copy of Albert’s new DVD, “Live at the Court Theatre.”

When Joshua Davis performed on NBC’s “The Voice,” America at-large finally discovered what Michiganders have known for more than two decades. This amazing artist connects with a live audience, nourishes their souls and feeds off of their love. Seeing him live has always revealed his core, his essence. Joshua comes to Michigan with a new release, “Live at the Robin,” which is his first live solo acoustic release, and the intimate environment of the theater was well suited for catching him in his element. Joshua remains a quintessentially Michigan guy, drawing his inspiration from the rough-and-tumble streets of Motown to the arboreal Upper Peninsula. The mitten is his muse. “I’ve wanted to make this album for years”, says Joshua. “And I’m so excited to share it. I love playing solo shows. It allows me the freedom to dig deep into my songs and really be in the moment with the audience.”

Luke Winslow-King is a New Orleans–based guitarist, singer, composer, producer, and songwriter. His work is an eclectic mix that combines Mississippi Delta blues, folk music, traditional jazz, and roots rock and roll. His alchemical songs blend contemporary ideas with styles from bygone eras producing a sound that is rustic and urbane, elegant and entirely his own. It is a sound that looks to the past to move to the future. This, along with his burgundy voice, dapper attire and versatile guitar playing, have earned him a reputation as a musician who delivers soulfully energetic and dynamic performances.

Known for its legendary music collection, including the early albums of Elvis Presley, Sun Studio left an indelible mark on the history of rock ‘n’ roll. In 2005, Tyler Hilton was cast to play the legendary rock star in the blockbuster biopic, Walk the Line (starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash). Now Tyler has teamed up with America’s premiere hot jazz and Western swing trio, Hot Club of Cowtown, bringing Elvis’ greatest hits from the Sun Studio years to life on the stage. The Hot Club of Cowtown has been an Ark favorite for years, but they’ve continued to break new ground since first visiting Ann Arbor in the 1990s, and this new show is no exception.

The Brother Brothers, twins, are Brooklyn's Adam and Davis Moss. They offer rich harmonies and thoughtful songs accompanied by guitar, cello, violin, and banjo in a coherent way that only musicians from the same family can achieve.  Already established players and composers in a wide spectrum of genres around New York and beyond, they have teamed up to bring their individual experiences together. Among their fans is Sarah Jarosz, who raves: "They approach their poignant and often charming songs with an almost startling sense of ease, and the tight harmonies are enough to send shivers down anyone's spine. Their ability to pull the listener into their quietly energetic musical journey is a joy to behold." The Brother Brothers come to Michigan with a new album, “Cover to Cover.”

Ever since their first meeting, over 20 years ago, Robert Jones and Matt Watroba have been musical partners. Their relationship started when they hosted back-to-back radio shows on WDET-FM, Detroit. Later on they started performing together and in doing so discovered a friendship based on mutual respect and a love for traditional American music. For Matt and Robert, American roots music (folk, blues, spirituals, work songs, chants, etc.) is music that matters. This is the music that America and the world have in common. It is music that reflects history, social change, migration, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse, direct and powerful. This year's program is a celebration of the life and musical legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor, craft, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.

Shelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day, the store transforms into an immersive, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry, shadow play, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.

Djangophonique is a virtuosic, instrumentally driven quartet led by guitar player Andrew Brown. A true disciple of the style, Andrew has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a Parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with a shimmering ballad. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club of France revival alive and well. Harmonious Wail, from Madison, Wisconsin, opens the show with Americana-infused gypsy jazz.

JOINT
Bodies in every size, shape and color, with hearts beating wildly and ideas colliding – the energy created in a LIVE interaction is sparked between hundreds of “joints” moving in tandem and in opposites on stage.  Music and movement are woven together in real time, unleashing creativity in our students giving our audiences a multisensory experience.           -Danielle Belen, Associate Professor of Violin

The Project
JOINT is a collaboration directed by SMTD faculty members Danielle Belen and Shannon Gillen, inspired by the diverse group of immensely talented students at U of M. The central themes of JOINT will be told through the sounds of solo violinists, the choreography of dancers, and the lens of Venezuelan photographer, Natali Herrera-Pacheco.
The months-long artistic process of connecting the students and developing the musical program, rehearsing, and integrating Natali’s photographic art will culminate in a 50 minute dynamic performance in Studio One of the new Dance Building on January 20th, 2023. This space offers an amplitude of possibilities with respect to lighting design and staging, to be explored in conjunction with Herrera-Pacheco’s powerful images projected behind the violinists and dancers.
The theme of the project explores the intersection of the physical body, its individual joints and parts, and the art we  create using them. JOINT refers literally to our physical joints, the borders that shape the beautiful angles of our limbs from shoulders to the small knuckles in our fingers, from our hip joints to our little pinky toe for balance. Of course, JOINT also intimates teamwork and togetherness, and this project reflects that in the basic fibers of its conception.
As a violin teacher, Professor Belen focuses much of her teaching and research on the very visceral physical aspects of creating sound. Intertwining violinists’ bodies with the physical instrument is not far from the way dancers use their bodies to interact with spaces and each other. Professor Gillen encourages her dancers to create deeply expressive works and push boundaries as interpreters, makers and performers.
We are connecting dancers and violinists, pushing them to be expressive in ways outside of their usual comfort zones. Violinists typically perform with other string players, while dancers often perform to pre-recorded tracks. The energy created in a LIVE interaction is sparked between hundreds of “joints” moving in tandem and in opposites on stage.
The Visuals
Through a multitude of visual arts, Natali Herrera-Pacheco will express the concept of the body’s various frames and borders created by our physical joints, while exploring the larger landscape of what it means for bodies, sounds and kinetics to coexist and create a beautiful artistic experience. Her artistic voice as a woman of color goes beyond her camera, and we are enjoying her inspiring interactions with the students leading up to this collaborative performance. Her visual storytelling and the performances by these gifted young artists will be interwoven to create a deeply enriching educational and aesthetic experience. In the artistic process, she has regularly traveled to Ann Arbor from her current home base in Texas to workshop with our students.
Natali has been pushing the boundaries of her art form across multiple continents and examples of her magnificent work can be found at natzstudio.com.
This idea of building a dynamic collaborative community within the larger SMTD landscape feels particularly relevant at this time. We hope to create a deeply connective tissue between dance and violin that speaks to larger ideas of self and personal expression through the infrastructure of this project.

Heywood Banks is simply one-of-a-kind, almost impossible to describe, with a style his very own. Equal parts genius and buffoon, this songwriter-comic-singer-poet-musician from Flint has become a cult hero and a pop icon, with a show that appeals to college students, stoners, businessmen, yuppies, rednecks, punks, kids, or your grandmother. Heywood intersperses his humorous observations of life with twisted, inventive, bizarre songs, sung and played in a variety of styles, from folk, to country to rock to pop, and way beyond. You have to be pretty smart to get Heywood at his deepest level (he demands a high level of pop culture literacy), but you can also enjoy him just for his vocal style impersonations, expert musicianship and just plain silliness. But why trust our opinions? Come and see for yourself!

Neal Francis with Danielle Ponder (January 26, 2023 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100737 100737-21800300@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 26, 2023 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

On his new album, “In Plain Sight,” Neal Francis offers up a body of work both strangely enchanted and painfully self-aware, unfolding in songs sparked from Greek myths and frenzied dreams and late-night drives in the depths of summer delirium. True to its charmed complexity, the singer/songwriter/pianist’s second full-length came to life over the course of a tumultuous year spent living in a possibly haunted church in Chicago. The result: a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that’s endlessly absorbing.

Bravery can take many forms. For Danielle Ponder it took the shape of a leap of faith: leaving her successful day job working in the public defender’s office in her hometown of Rochester (New York) to devote herself full-time to sharing her powerful voice with the world. The singer-songwriter’s mesmerizing eight-song debut, “Some of Us Are Brave,” reinforces that her faith was not misplaced, and her leap has been rewarded with a safe landing. Written and recorded over three years, the album is a refreshingly original, shiver-inducing mix of pop, R&B, blues, rock, and moody trip-hop topped by Danielle’s celestial voice— an instrument that can plumb melancholy depths with a heartsick murmur and scrape the sky with hurricane force wails.

Free and open to the public

An interdisciplinary musical performance that highlights the turning points in the history of physics. The show combines fragments (excerpts from writings by some of the most prominent physicists in history) woven with Elfriede Jelinek’s writing which is read and interpreted by a narrator with original songs based on each fragment. The project explores the intersection between the arts and the sciences, and postulates the thesis that art and science are not antagonistic alternatives in the search for truth; rather, there is a broad territory of coexistence.

The main objective of the composition is to inspire an audience to become more engaged in arts and science by exploring the deep epistemological connection between art and science and at the same time using art as a facilitating vehicle for the teaching and communication of science.

The concert will begin with a short Q&A between Alberto Rojo, Michael Gould and Nicholas Balla followed by the premiere of the piece. The performance is located at the Keene Theater in the East Quadrangle on the University of Michigan central campus-701 East University Avenue. For more information contact Michael Gould (gould@umich.edu).

Alberto Rojo has written four books, numerous essays and popular science pieces (in Spanish), and lectures around the world on the connection between art and science. His latest book, The Principle of Least Action, History and Physics, written in collaboration with Anthony Bloch, was published in March 2018 by Cambridge University Press. As a musician, he released three solo albums and has collaborated with Latin American artists, notably Mercedes Sosa, with whom he toured extensively. He wrote and performed one of the songs of her Album Corazón Libre, recipient of the 2005 Latin Grammy Award for best folkloric album.

Michael Gould has received international recognition as a performer and scholar in the field of drumset, contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy. He has performed and given clinics all over the world. Michael has released over 100 educational percussion videos through playalongmusic.com. He has also composed and performed music for a wide range of ensembles and venues from the Münich Opera and Ballet to National Public Radio.

He has had unique collaborations with engineers, material scientists, painters, poets, dancers, athletes and business professionals. His book for the iPad-- The Drum Diaries is available worldwide through the Apple iTunes store. He is also the music director for Tangente Dance Company in Berlin, Germany. His piece Remember Me was recently performed at the Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin, Germany and includes dance, theater, percussion, electronics, and original artwork. He is currently Director of the Center for World Performance Studies at the University of Michigan.

Get ready to Find Your Folk! The 46th annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival returns live in a slightly modified format after a two-year hiatus. Saturday night, January 28, will take place as usual in beautiful Hill Auditorium with a lineup you won’t want to miss. Friday, January 27 we’ve cooked up something on a smaller scale: an intimate, in-the-round evening at home in the 400-seat Ark!

The festival is the largest annual fundraiser for The Ark, Ann Arbor’s non-profit home for folk, roots, and ethnic music. Presented by The Ark and Bank of Ann Arbor, the 2023 Folk Fest brings two nights of music in two beloved venues. The festival delivers the full spectrum of “Ark music,” presenting a taste of what’s happening on the leading edge of acoustic music while delving into the very heart of folk and roots traditions.

The University Symphony Orchestra performs the great Third Symphony of Brahms, whose melodies have found their way into popular culture through dozens of movies and songs. The program also includes Ravel’s La Valse, the colorful and revolutionary orchestral showpiece originally conceived as a ballet, and Charlotte Mecklenburg by Nkeiru Okoye, American composer of Nigerian descent. Written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the city of Charlotte, NC. Premiered in 2018, the work quotes a variety of music to trace its history, including a hymn tune, a spiritual and jazz. The title comes from the city’s namesake Queen who likely had mixed-race heritage. The composition’s title relates to Okoye’s other music, which includes pieces about Phillis Wheatley and Harriet Tubman. She has said, “I crafted together my reflections and additional research using various melodic elements from original and folk sources, well-known and obscure. With a gentle nod to Aaron Copland, and the early 20th century call for more “American” music, the composition weaves a tapestry of the city and its history.”

Program:
Brahms, Symphony No. 3
Nkeiru Okoye, Charlotte Mecklenberg
Ravel, La Valse

More about the film:
MTV Documentary Films Presents *Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices From a Plantation Prison* (formerly known as A Peculiar Silence) tells the story of playwright Liza Jessie Peterson, whose acclaimed play *The Peculiar Patriot* was shut down mid-performance at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola Prison.

Directed and edited by Cinque Northern, produced by Catherine Gund, featuring Liza Jessie Peterson and Norris Henderson (Peterson and Henderson are also Executive Producers), the film examines how one woman's play challenged the country's largest plantation prison and impacted the incarcerated men long after the record of her visit was erased by the institution's administration.

More about the play:
LaQuanda ‘Betsy’ Ross knows a lot about the New York State Penitentiary system. Her regular visits to loved ones in various upstate institutions have made her quite the expert and a self-proclaimed “Peculiar Patriot." In-between neighborhood updates and gossip, Betsy educates herself and the audience on the systemic inequity within America’s prison complex system and its effect on those behind bars, as well as their family and friends.

Written and performed by the incomparable Liza Jessie Peterson, The Peculiar Patriot was inspired by her comprehensive and extensive work in prisons, including on Riker’s Island. Peterson’s tour de force solo piece is an important, funny, and profound investigative look into America’s criminal justice system.

Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. He heard jazz in Ukraine, blues from expat African Americans in Berlin. “Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues,” guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Buffalo Nichols explains. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album, composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas, and it marks a new stage of the blues.

Grammy-nominated banjoist Barry Abernathy joins forces with Grammy-winning fiddler Jim VanCleve, fresh off of his recent stint touring with multi-platinum country artist Josh Turner, as well as esteemed vocalist and mandolinist Darrell Webb, who has recorded and toured with Dolly Parton and Rhonda Vincent, among many others. The group also includes 26-year-old “old soul” guitarist Zeb Snyder, whose fierce and versatile playing recalls Doc Watson and Norman Blake as readily as it does Duane Allman and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Mustard’s Retreat has always sung the songs they enjoyed and cared about, regardless of the trends of the music industry and pop culture. They are committed to simply being themselves, not chasing fame or brass rings, while delighting in and connecting with their audiences as if they were family. The honesty of what they present onstage and the extensive body of outstanding original songs and recordings all contribute to a fiercely loyal audience that continues to grow. “Music to cure what ails you” was how one reviewer in the 1970s described them, and that is as true now as it was then.

They’ve traveled more than a million miles and performed more than 6,000 shows, from pig roasts and pool parties to Lincoln Center Out of Doors, The Barns at Wolftrap and the Kennedy’s Center’s Millennium Stage. They’ve recently begun referring to their career and touring as “Defiantly Hopeful.” In part due to their long career, but more as a statement about what the music has meant to them.

“Folk music is, at its heart, defiantly hopeful!” founder David Tamulevich says. “We came of age in the 60s, at the confluence of Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan and the singer/songwriter revolution. We care much more about what we do and stand for and finding that common ground with our audiences, than fame or money: this is our community of choice, and we consider ourselves so fortunate to be here.”

Tonight’s show features the Mustard’s Retreat 2.0 duo of Tamulevich and Libby Glover, who come to The Ark with a new album, “By Request.”

The Plastic Bag Store (February 5, 2023 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103461 103461-21807277@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, February 5, 2023 5:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts

Laith Al-Saadi began singing at age four and began playing guitar at 13. At 15 he formed his first blues band, Blue Vinyl. In short order they opened for blues greats like Buddy Guy (to whose work his playing has been compared), Luther Allison, Son Seals, and Taj Mahal and toured the Netherlands. At the University of Michigan, Laith was a member of the Johnny Trudell Orchestra and freelanced with Detroit greats like Thornetta Davis, Jocelyn B, The Reefermen. Laith is a real road warrior who generally can be found playing at least five nights a week around Michigan and beyond, and Michigan's secret got out when he made the finals of television's "The Voice." If you haven’t checked out this monster Michigan talent yet, you really should! Tonight Laith performs a rare solo show.

Groundbreaking, chart-topping, genre-bending, globetrotting, instantly enthralling… it’s little wonder that Talisk ranks highly amongst the most in-demand folk-based groups to emerge from Scotland in the last decade and more. Mohsen Amini (BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards’ Musician of the Year), Graeme Armstrong and Benedict Morris (BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year) fuse concertina, guitar and fiddle to produce a multilayered signature that has captivated audiences around the globe. At its core, three seemingly acoustic instruments—but in the hands of three master craftsmen; one unmistakable, bold sound and captivating live show. Talisk is coming to Michigan with a new album, “Dawn.”
