The Clements Bookworm: The Strange Genius of Mr. O: The World of The United States' First Forgotten Celebrity (August 19, 2022 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/95520 95520-21790033@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, August 19, 2022 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

When James Ogilvie arrived in America in 1793, he was a deeply ambitious but impoverished teacher. By the time he returned to Britain in 1817, he had become a bona fide celebrity known simply as Mr. O, counting the nation’s leading politicians and intellectuals among his admirers. And then, like so many meteoric American luminaries afterward, he fell from grace.

The Strange Genius of Mr. O is at once the biography of a remarkable performer--a gaunt Scottish orator who appeared in a toga--and a story of the United States during the founding era.

Why should we care about a now-forgotten celebrity of the early 19th century? Carolyn Eastman (Associate Professor of History, Virginia Commonwealth University) examines an explosive celebrity performer who captivated audiences at a key moment in the founding era, a man whose career featured many of the hallmarks of celebrity we recognize from later eras: glamorous friends, eccentric clothing, scandalous religious views, and even a drug habit. And yet examining his career and the Americans who loved (or hated) him reveals a vivid portrait of the United States in the midst of invention.

Traffic Signal Control via Decentralized Decomposition Approaches (August 24, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/96271 96271-21792217@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, August 24, 2022 1:00pm

Traffic congestion is a global pressing issue that can be mitigated via effective traffic signal control schemes. In this presentation, based on a cell transmission model, the team from the University of Michigan coordinated the control of traffic signals at multiple intersections to maximize vehicle throughput on corridors or road networks under uncertain traffic demand and vehicle turning. They formulated a two-stage, stochastic mixed-integer linear program using finite samples of the uncertain parameter, and combined Benders decomposition with the alternating direction method of multipliers to develop spatially-temporally distributed algorithms for optimizing the problem. They then tested instances of traffic signal control on corridors and grid networks, based on synthetic and real-world traffic data. The results show that

1. considering traffic uncertainty can significantly improve the signal control quality and
2. decentralized decomposition approaches can quickly find high-quality signal plans for multiple intersections in complex road networks, and fully utilize the computation and communication technologies in smart-transportation infrastructures.

A Novel Bioelastomer Platform with Tailorable Design Parameters for Cartilage Regeneration (August 30, 2022 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/97426 97426-21794553@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, August 30, 2022 11:00am
Location: Lurie Biomedical Engineering (formerly ATL)

Abstract:

Articular cartilage has limited ability to self-repair, which often causes focal defects to progress into post traumatic osteoarthritis. Autologous chondrocyte implantation, a process in which chondrocytes are harvested from the patient, expanded in monolayer culture, and injected into the defect site, is one of the most common approaches to treat cartilage defect. However, chondrocyte dedifferentiation during this process reduces their ability to durably restore cartilage function. Chondrocyte-based cartilage tissue engineering offers alternative approaches for cartilage repair to overcome the limitations of current clinical options by developing environments that combines cues from synthetic scaffold and biological factors to enhance chondrocyte function. However, the translation to the clinic has been limited by our incomplete understanding of how scaffold design parameters interact together to control cell function. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on designing a chondrocyte-based biomaterial platform made with a novel elastomeric synthetic scaffold, poly(glycerol dodecanedioate) (PGD), to investigate the combinatory effects of design parameters on chondrocytes behavior in vitro.

First, this thesis evaluates the effects of surface modification of PGD on the shape and extracellular matrix (ECM) production of chondrocyte, both of which are crucial for robust cartilage formation. I investigated two different strategies to generate a biomaterial surface with high cell affinity: 1) coating with various concentration of collagen type I or hyaluronic acid individually or in combination, or 2) altering the surface charge and roughness using various level of alkaline hydrolysis. Our results revealed the combinatorial effects of ligand composition and density or surface charge and roughness on human articular chondrocyte function.

Lastly, I used finite element analysis to determine if the local strain fields that developed inside the pores under load could be tuned to be within the range shown to have an anabolic effect on chondrocyte function. The tensile strains that develop along 31% – 71% pore surfaces inside of porous PGD scaffolds, according to varying pore size and porosity, were at levels shown to stimulate chondrocyte ECM production, indicating that the pore structural parameters could be tuned to optimize cellular-level strain profiles. These results suggest that porous PGD scaffolds have the potential to guide cartilage regeneration.

Overall, this dissertation produces a platform for cartilage tissue engineering using a novel bioelastomer PGD, in which the scaffold design parameters, such as surface modification and cellular strain, can be modified to enhance chondrocyte function.

npore is a read realigner which recalculates each read's fine-grained alignment in order to more accurately align ''n-polymers'' such as homopolymers (n=1) and tandem repeats (2 ≤ n ≤ 6). In other words, given an input BAM, it adjusts each read's CIGAR string to more accurately model the most likely sequencing errors and actual variants. Traditional affine gap penalties are context-agnostic, and do not model the higher likelihood of INDELs in low-complexity regions (particularly n-polymers), leading to poor or inconsistent alignments. We find that npore improves pileup concordance across reads and results in slightly better variant calling performance.

Mark Clague brilliantly weaves together the stories of the song and the nation it represents in his newest book, "O Say Can You Hear?, A Cultural Biography of 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'" Examining the origins of both text and music, alternate lyrics and translations, and the song’s use in sports, at times of war, and for political protest, he argues that the anthem’s meaning reflects—and is reflected by—the nation’s quest to become a more perfect union. From victory song to hymn of sacrifice and vehicle for protest, the story of Key’s song is the story of America itself.

Mark is Professor of musicology and American culture at the University of Michigan; associate dean at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance; and codirector of the American Music Institute.

This episode of the Clements Bookworm is generously sponsored by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.

Mathematical modeling of risk-taking in bipolar disorder: Evidence of reduced behavioral consistency, with altered loss aversion specific to those with history of substance use disorder
Abstract:
Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with excessive pleasure-seeking risk-taking behaviors that often characterize its clinical presentation. However, the mechanisms of risk-taking behavior are not well-understood in BD. Recent data suggest prior substance use disorder (SUD) in BD may represent certain trait-level vulnerabilities for risky behavior. This study examined the mechanisms of risk-taking and the role of SUD in BD via mathematical modeling of behavior on the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) in three groups: euthymic BD with prior SUD, euthymic BD without prior SUD, and healthy comparisons. We modeled behavior using competing hierarchical Bayesian models, and the winning model encompassed and delineated five cognitive components of risk-taking: prior belief, learning rate, risk preference, loss aversion, and behavioral consistency. Our analyses disentangled the mechanistic alterations underlying risk-taking in BD more generally, and those that are specific to subgroups with prior SUD. Results also highlight the value of mathematical modeling to understand behavior in research on complex disorders like BD.

Are the criteria used to diagnose Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) biased? Examining criterion contamination for BPD criteria based on sexual orientation
Abstract:
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by a high negative affectivity and impulsivity. BPD is also 1.5-3 times more prevalent in sexual minority individuals. This disparity may be due to bias in the items used to diagnose BPD, as they may be conflating SM- specific factors with the BPD phenotype. If the criteria are ‘contaminated’ with SM-specific factors, sexual minorities may be more likely to endorse BPD symptoms for reasons other than BPD. Using item response theory, we tested whether BPD items were more likely to be endorsed by sexual minorities regardless of their relationships to internalizing (negative affectivity) and
externalizing (impulsivity) psychopathology in a large, nationally representative sample. We found 14/18 BPD items were easier to endorse with regard to externalizing, and 5/18 BPD items were easier to endorse with regard to internalizing. Chronic self-injury and impulsive sexual behavior had the largest disparities in endorsement for sexual minorities regardless of internalizing and externalizing levels. Our results show evidence of bias within the items and
criteria used to diagnose BPD, such that sexual minorities are more likely to endorse BPD items despite lower standing on the underlying psychopathology associated with BPD. Implications for equitable assessment in minoritized populations will be discussed.

TITLE:
Interfacial friction of soft materials

ABSTRACT:
The need to engineer interfacial friction is increasingly important in technologies as diverse as soft robotics and consumer products. The first part of the talk focuses on the role of particle roughness in the rheology, structure, and dynamics of dense colloidal suspensions. Rough colloids at maximum packing, unlike hard sphere systems, retain strong rheological memory and shear thickening properties that could be leveraged to create impact resistant soft materials. We analyze these unusual rheological phenomena using direct visualization from confocal rheometry, glass transition and hydrodynamic models, and the reduced mobility of interlocked particles. The second part of the talk focuses on our group's recent work on bioinspired soft materials. We investigate the effect of material chemistry as well as pattern geometry on the sliding friction of elastomer and hydrogel surfaces separated by very thin fluid layers. Using a semi-analytical lubrication and elasticity model that accounts for the compression and bending of patterns, it is possible to accurately predict the interfacial friction experienced by humans and robot fingers sliding across wet textured materials. Our long-term vision is to create new frontiers in haptic science through the physico-chemical design of colloidal and polymeric materials

Developmental Brown Bag: Children's and adults' understanding and learning about genetic inheritance (September 26, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/98858 98858-21797274@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 26, 2022 12:00pm
Location: East Hall
Organized By: Department of Psychology

Abstract: Genetic inheritance is a fundamental concept in biology, as it is the mechanism for the transmission of traits. Therefore, understanding genetic inheritance is pivotal for science education and biological reasoning. Prior work on children’s understanding of genetic inheritance suggests that children initially have a “mother bias” such that, if parents have different traits, children think that offspring will have the same trait as the mother rather than the father. However, this pattern might be due to prior work only allowing children to select one possible offspring. In this presentation, I will present two novel tasks to assess children's and adults' beliefs about inheritance. Using these tasks, I show that even 4-year-old children have a more sophisticated understanding of inheritance than previously believed, and that this understanding is constrained by different biases than those identified in prior work. I will also show how these biases are present for different traits and animals, are resistant to instruction, and persevere into adulthood. These new insights inform our understanding of children's biological reasoning and can be used to design new genetics lessons.

ABSTRACT:
Synthetic biology (SB) is one of the most promising fields of research for the 21st century. SB offers powerful new ways to improve human health, build the global economy, manufacture sustainable materials, and address climate change. However, current access to SB-enabled breakthroughs is unequal, largely due to bottlenecks in infrastructure and education. Here, I describe our efforts to re-think the way we engineer biology using cell-free systems to address these bottlenecks. We show how the ability to readily store, distribute, and activate low-cost, freeze-dried cell-free systems by simply adding water has opened new opportunities for on-demand biomanufacturing of vaccines for global health, point-of-care diagnostics for environmental safety, and education for SB literacy and citizenship. By integrating cell-free systems with artificial intelligence (AI), we also show the ability to accelerate the production of carbon-negative platform chemicals. Looking forward, advances in engineering tools and new knowledge underpinning the fundamental science of living matter will ensure that SB helps solve humanity’s most pressing challenges.

Abstract: At first glance the fields of psychology, neuroscience and astrophysics are vastly different, however the disciplines are all similarly concerned with uncovering underlying structures: that govern the behavior of human beings, the functioning of brains and the physics of objects in the cosmos. In this talk, I will illustrate how an interdisciplinary perspective can leverage the strengths of astronomical methods to advance and enhance the brain and behavioral sciences. Specifically, I will describe how astronomical simulation techniques can be used to assess psychological temporal network methods for studying individual differences in learning, and the process of using astronomical image processing to improve the detection efficiency of neuroscientific synaptic calcium transients in high-resolution microscopy. A conversation with Kade Crockford about technology, surveillance, and civil liberties (October 3, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97707 97707-21794988@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 3, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Science, Technology, and Public Policy (STPP) Program

The Science, Technology, and Public Policy program (STPP) is honored to discuss technology, surveillance and civil liberties with Kade Crockford, the director of the Technology for Liberty Program at the ACLU of Massachusetts.

Kade works on issues at the intersection of technology and civil rights and civil liberties, focusing on how systems of surveillance and control impact not just the society in general but their primary targets—people of color, Muslims, immigrants, and dissidents. Recently, Kade led the ACLU of Massachusetts’ "Press Pause on Face Surveillance" campaign, which has thus far won the passage of a state law regulating police use of facial recognition, and eight municipal bans on government use of face surveillance technology, including in Massachusetts’ four largest cities.

This event is in-person at 1110 Weill Hall, 735 State Street, Ann Arbor and will be livestreamed. Please register at https://forms.gle/zcZpwHVCSTLmZEjt8

ABSTRACT:
The catalytic chemistry of nitrogen is inextricably linked with mankind’s use of energy. Large scale nitrogen fixation (N2 → NH3) revolutionized the production of fertilizer, enabled the population explosion of the 20th century, and now consumes several percent of the world’s energy annually production. NOx reduction (NOx → N2) is integral to reducing the adverse impacts of transportation on urban air quality and health. These and other technologies all depend at their heart on heterogeneous catalysis. In this presentation I will discuss the insights gained by applying molecular-level models and concepts to nitrogen catalytic chemistry. Examples will be drawn from our work on the selective catalytic reduction of NOx in Cu-exchanged zeolites, a problem that has led us to rethink the factors that govern reactivity in zeolites, from NO and NH3 oxidation, problems that have caused us to revisit how we model reactions at metal surfaces, and from N2 reduction, where we are exploring the potential to bypass the constraints presented by common catalysts by combining with a non-thermal plasma.

BIO:
Bill Schneider’s expertise is in chemical applications of density functional theory (DFT) simulations. After receiving his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the Ohio State University, he began his professional career in the Ford Motor Company Research Laboratory working on a variety of problems related to the environmental impacts of automobile emissions. At Ford he developed an interest in the catalytic chemistry of NOx for diesel emissions control, and he has published extensively on the chemistry and mechanisms of NOx decomposition, selective catalytic reduction, trapping, and oxidation catalysis. In 2004 he joined the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering faculty at the University of Notre Dame as an Associate Professor. At Notre Dame he has continued his research into the theory and molecular simulation of heterogeneous catalysis, with particular emphasis on reaction environment effects on catalytic materials and their implications for mechanism and reactivity. He was named the H. Clifford and Evelyn A. Brosey Chair in 2016 and Dorini Family Chair and Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2020. Discovering a Forgery: Jupiter's real moons and U-M's fake Galileo manuscript (October 6, 2022 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/98493 98493-21796718@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 6, 2022 7:00pm
Location: Detroit Observatory
Organized By: Bentley Historical Library

In 1610, Galileo Galilei made a revolutionary discovery: moons orbiting Jupiter. One of the first astronomical discoveries made using a telescope, this event was critical to reshaping human understanding of the cosmos. Galileo drafted notes on his observations of the moons, for later publication in a work called the Sidereus Nuncius. In 1938, in a meeting that took place at U-M's Detroit Observatory, that draft was gifted to the University, becoming a treasured holding of the University Library. Or so everyone long believed. Now, thanks to the work of historian Nicholas Wilding, and the collaboration of U-M librarian Pablo Alvarez, the University's "Galileo Manuscript" has been exposed as a 20th-century forgery. Join us at the Detroit Observatory for discussion with Wilding and Alvarez of the purported significance of the manuscript, how its authenticity came to be questioned, and what went into the determination that it was a fake. The manuscript itself will be on display as part of this event, as will be the Library's copy of the first edition of Sidereus Nuncius. Following the panel, weather permitting, we will observe Jupiter and its Galilean moons using a telescope similar in size and power to the one Galileo used and using the historic 12.5" Fitz refracting telescope in the Observatory's dome.

Nick Wilding is professor of history at Georgia State University and a scholar of early modern Europe, history of science, and book forgery. Pablo Alvarez is curator in the Library's Special Collections Research Center and a specialist in pre-1700 manuscripts and printed books.
