Sometimes, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster, or cooking with your dad, who grew up poor, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity.

The Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live, work, play, love, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces, the artists tell stories about the customs, communities, relationships, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us, our communities, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in.

About the Exhibition
Nicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and educator whose practice explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Deeply rooted in community, she cultivates and reaffirms the human connections that ultimately sustain us. Her recent work explores the emergent themes of belonging as seen through the histories of student rebellions in Chicago public schools between 1968 and 1980.

Her site-specific installation With Care, created for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery, presents the documentary photographs of influential Mexican-born artist, teacher, and friend Diana Solís in visual dialogue with Marroquin’s own creative work which includes ceramic sculptures and printmaking. Solís’s photography reflects over 25 years of transnational Chicana and lesbian organizing primarily in Chicago and Mexico City between 1975 and 1990.

About the Artist
Nicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and teacher educator whose work explores spatial justice and Latinx history. Marroquin works with youth and communities to decenter dominant narratives and to address displacement and erasure. Her current work explores belonging through histories of student rebellions in Chicago Public Schools from 1968 to 1980. Through research and creative practice, she aims to recover and re-present histories of Black and brown youth and women’s leadership in the struggle for justice in Chicago.

The exhibit explores the creativity and utility of an essential part of practically every modern book, the title page. Such pages signal and inform, incite pleasure and intrigue, as well as conceal and mislead. The works shown here from the holdings of the University of Michigan Library illuminate critical moments in the history of books.

Students in a Fall 2022 History Lab class researched and created the exhibit.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Prison Creative Arts Project, The

Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit), open now through May 21st.

A public reception will be held on March 9th, 6:00–9:00 PM, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.

We hope you will be able to see the exhibit, and please be in touch if you have any questions.

Humanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.

This exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so, those in prison reclaim their humanity.

Seeing in Depth: Mars (March 10, 2023 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/105143 105143-21811158@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 10, 2023 8:00pm

Organized By: Bentley Historical Library

As the Earth passes by Mars, the Detroit Observatory takes a closer looks at our solar system's rusty, red neighbor.

The Detroit Observatory's Seeing in Depth programs are a chance to take a closer look at some of the people, places, and sciences from the observatory's history. Mars has occupied the imagination of earthlings for as long as they've pondered the night sky. As the red planet moves across Michigan's winter night sky, the Detroit Observatory will point its telescopes towards the red planet. We will also share stories about humanity's understanding of Mars through the 20th century and astronomers from the DO who helped explore it.

Talks and presentations begin at 8PM. Telescope observing is weather dependent.

Come and view a selection of early rare books and prints containing images printed with the technique of relief (woodcuts) and intaglio (copperplate engravings). To demonstrate the working of these illustration processes, our display will also include some historical woodblocks and copperplates. Drop by anytime during this open house, held in room 660 on the 6th floor of the Hatcher Library, to peruse these materials and enjoy light refreshments!

From the introduction of movable-type printing in Europe in the fifteenth century, images were often included along with the printed text, playing various roles in the transmission of culture and new ideas. While some illustrations were merely decorative, others became extraordinary landmarks in the history of religion and science.

Curious about different career paths in healthcare? Come meet representatives from different graduate school programs that prepare you for a variety of healthcare careers.

Register using link to the right.

Everyone who pre-registers and attends will be entered into a drawing to win one of three fabulous U-M gift packs!

Refreshments will be provided.

What you can expect?
Our goal is to give you the chance to explore the different opportunities for graduate programs and careers in healthcare. With that in mind, the fair is different from other graduate school fairs in that just a single program from each specialty will be in attendance. You can then take what you learn by talking to the reps at the fair and research how to connect with individual schools that might offer the program that best suits you.

The following graduate programs will be attending.

U-M Medical School

Michigan State Osteopathic Medicine

U-M School of Kinesiology

U-M College of Pharmacy

U-M Flint Physical Therapy

U-M Flint Physicians Assistant

U-M School of Public Health

U-M Program in Biomedical Science

U-M Postbacc in MEDPREP

U-M Human Genetics Program

U-M Genetic Counseling Program

Why a fair specifically for transfer students?
Transfer students have described experiencing uncertainty at grad school recruitment events because their experiences do match the traditional grad student profile. We hope that a transfer student centered fair will help you feel more comfortable asking questions based on your transfer experiences. All of the programs are excited to talk with you about your transfer experience and to offer advice on how to reflect on your experiences when applying.

Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

Celebrate the artists in our current exhibit, Portraits of Feminism in Japan, on Wednesday, March 22nd with a reception and roundtable conversation.
Reception (in person): 6:00 - 7:00 pm ET, Lane Hall Exhibit Space

Artists’ Roundtable (hybrid): 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. ET in Lane Hall 2239 or on Zoom

About the exhibit:

The exhibit features original works by nine incredible contemporary artists. The involved artists are U-M students, local artists, and artists based in Japan, all of whom are nominated by members of our community.

This exhibit presents portraits of eight feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. The portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of "feminism" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. This exhibit will also spotlight the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration.

Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Please join us for the opening of "a way outta no way" by Ricky Weaver. As part of the artist's vision for this project, the installation will be activated on opening night with a collective response to the objects, the space, and the archives within. Facilitated by: Ricky Weaver, Viktor Givens, Bryce Detroit, Andrew Wilson, and Efe Bes.

About the Exhibition
Artist/photographer Ricky Weaver intends to explore the poetics and futurism of the gestures and particularities of Black women and Black bodies. She constructs narratives through her images, often focused on people in her family and close community, exploring different representations of Blackness beyond the stereotypical. Weaver is deeply interested in the power, magic, and spirituality of Black women and girls. Her exhibition in the gallery will combine installation and photography as a way of capturing the transcendence of spirit and story.

About the Artist
Ricky Weaver is an image-based artist, theorist, and mother, born in Ypsilanti, MI. Her art and theory are centered around the lexicon generated through black women's everyday practices, dark sousveillance, and images as objects that alchemize the archive on a quantum level. She is currently teaching at ArtCenter College of Art and Design in Pasadena, CA as a fellow for the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design. Weaver is represented by David Klein Gallery and has shown work at Art Miami, the Havana Biennale, Sofa Expo, and more. Her work has been acquired by institutions like the Wedge Collection and published in Aperture’s As We Rise: Photography from the Black Atlantic.

Weaver was named one of LensCulture's Critics Choice Artists of 2020, selected by Susan Thompson, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum. She also participated in the Independent Scholar Fellowship at The Carr Center where she was mentored by Carrie Mae Weems. She earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Eastern Michigan University, with a concentration in photography.

Weaver recently presented a paper titled “How I Got Over: The Meta-Archive and other registers” at Black Portraitures VII hosted by Rutgers University. Most recently she has taken on the role of lead visual consultant, specializing in image theory and photography, for the Global Institute for Black Girls in Film and Media.

This project is made possible by a grant from the Mellon Foundation as part of the Institute for the Humanities' multi-year High Stakes Art initiative.

Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities, communications, and safety.
This work stems from artist Caroline Sinders' previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of 'infrastructural' and 'architectural' spaces, both online and offline, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure, and open, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research, Sinders analyzed how structures, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.
Caroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders' residency and practice in this Q&A.
Sinders is an award winning critical designer, researcher, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence, intersectional justice, systems design, harm, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern, the United Nations, the European Commission, Ars Electronica, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London, UK and New Orleans, USA.

The Detroit Observatory in Ann Arbor invites you out for a night of confusion and delight. To celebrate the many strange happenings throughout astronomical history, we will be presenting a series of short talks designed to test the limits of your history and astronomy knowledge. Each talk could be about something true, something wrong, or...something fake? Confused, yet? We certainly are!

Yes, we know April 7 is not actually on April Fools Day, but you'd be a fool not to check out these fantastic talks!

Talks will begin at 8PM and are followed by tours (these are true, we promise) of the historic observatory and telescope observing. Telescope observing depends on the weather.

How do you build a 40-foot-long portable telescopic camera, and what can you do with it? How did U-M’s first African American PhD astronomer pursue his effort to solve the “painfully absurd” mystery of what makes the stars shine? Where was William Fletcher — one of the first U-M Regents and the first Michigan Supreme Court chief justice — buried and why did no one know for a hundred years?

The Detroit Observatory is excited to host our first History Roundtable! The roundtable will feature presentations by three of our student docents, Eva Chavez, Sophia Grant, and Bennett Walling. Join us for discussion of topics like those above, and learn about our student docent program and the range of activities that our docents undertake.

Refreshments will be provided.

As with all of our events, the Observatory will be open for tours following the panel discussion, with observing if weather permits.

Come explore captivating cartographic creations that unveil the artistry, aesthetics, and allure of mapmaking. Many of our maps are known more for their art than geography, with detailed illustrations ranging from the Renaissance to Art Deco. Please join us for this month’s student-curated open house to witness how maps transform into works of art.

Third Thursday in the Clark Library is a themed open house that shares highlights from the Clark Library’s vast collection. View the current exhibit on display; peruse rare materials, large-format maps, and other treasures typically tucked away; and chat with our librarians.

Join us at ISR for a reception kicking off RCGD's fall Group Dynamics Seminar Series, "Psychological Diversity across the Globe," organized by Shinobu Kitayama and Catherine Thomas.

The reception will include brief presentations on the topic and the series.

Do our cultural contexts influence our psychology and behavior — and if so, how? In this RCGD series, we delve into the socio-ecological, histo-cultural, and economic dynamics shaping the diversity of selfhood and its associated cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes. We go beyond the traditional East and West focus to include a wide range of cultural groups. This series will elucidate the implications of psychological diversity across the globe for policies in international relations, politics, economics, business, immigration, and other relevant domains.

In person: ISR Thompson 1430

About the Group Dynamics Seminar Series:
The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included discussions in “Law and Psychology,” “Racism and Discrimination,” “Social Media,” and “New Directions in Social Psychology.”

Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Please join us as we welcome Teresa Tolliver to the University of Michigan and celebrate the opening of her exhibition *Harbingers of Dreams* in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.

About the exhibition and artist:
Born in 1945, artist, educator, and mentor Teresa Tolliver has lived and worked in South Central L.A. for three decades. In 2022, she opened her first one-woman show at the prominent Sebastian Gladstone Gallery. Most recently, her work has been chosen for inclusion as part of L.A.’s Hammer Museum Biennial, which runs concurrently with her exhibition Harbingers of Dreams in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.

Tolliver refers to her process as “creative recycling”: forging found and thrifted materials, and repurposing them. These frenetic bundles of coils, adornments, wires, and loose ends express the artist’s feelings, perspectives, and everyday way of living.

Earlier works of the artist are on a smaller scale and doll-like. They are intimate, imaginative references to Tolliver’s own girlhood in a world lacking adequate or authentic representations of Black life.

Tolliver’s more recent figurative assemblages are life-size, larger-than-life, looming. They command space and celebrate it. There is an inherent connection between these sculptures and the long-established history of African American yard art, where plants, statuary, and artistic creations communicate themes of personal space, freedom of expression, and dreams of independence. Tolliver’s bold visual choices and material combinations are refusals of outside value judgments and hierarchies.

When visiting artist Teresa Tolliver's home studio, one expects the figures will spring to life, otherworldly. They seem to gather and congregate. There are no distractions from the outside, save the light coming through the window. Through subtle details like molding, furniture, and drawers inspired by Tolliver’s own domestic space, Harbingers of Dreams attempts to capture the resplendent and spiritual nature of such a visit, with the opportunity to sit among the artist’s creations.

Tolliver’s figurative sculptures appear as embodiments of the city of L.A. and its diverse communities and neighborhoods. They are assemblages of disparate influences, esthetics, and materials: prefab, handmade, urban, nostalgic, opulent, functional, garish, and celestial. A visual cacophony of colors, influences, designs, and forms, each figure beckons us towards futures in the making.

*Teresa Tolliver is the Paula and Edwin Sidman Fellow in the Arts. This exhibition is part of LSA’s fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.*

Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

Join us in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor) on Wednesday 10/4 to celebrate Sarah Buckius’ innovative exhibition !!!techn010ffspring!!! Refreshments, community, and conversation will be available starting at 4pm. At 5pm the artist will give a talk on the exhibition, its origins, and her process in Lane Hall 2239. There will be time for Q&A.

About the exhibit:
Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is an exhibition where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves.

Trained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to, and alternative to, patriarchal, capitalist, production-based, and seemingly rational, useful, logical systems.

About the Artist:
Sarah Buckius is an artist, educator, and engineer who lives in Santa Cruz, California. Originally from the midwest (Champaign, IL), she holds an M.F.A. from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her creative work, which incorporates digital media (video, photography, collage, animation) and performance, has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Through her work, she weaves "Intertwined HerStories" that originate from the cross-section of *-gender-*-technology-*-lens-based-media-*-the human body-*-caregiving-*. She works in the space of absurdity that emerges at the point of disconnect between the seemingly coded / structured / ordered / production-based space of technology and the messy / complex / idiosyncratic space of humanity and is interested in uncovering the ways in which working with and creating technology illuminates humanness, including gender biases. With an underlying goal of supporting DEI in STEM fields, her work illuminates the ingenuity of diverse groups of people.

“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Arts Council Santa Cruz County.

We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM's graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM's EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) and M.S. students are part of a college-wide program, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. More information about the program is available at our EER website (https://eer.engin.umich.edu/)

Students from all institutions are invited to attend (a Zoom link will be emailed prior to the program). Participants will hear about the EER graduate program, meet faculty who are recruiting students for AY 2024-25, and learn about career opportunities as a UM graduate in this field. Application fee waivers will be provided to those who attend.

Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Please join us as we welcome Gabriela Ruiz to the University of Michigan and celebrate the opening of her exhibition *Digital Engrams *in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery, Immediately following her 5:30 p.m. Penny Stamps Lecture at the Michigan Theater.

About *Digital Engrams*:
The notion that our brains actually create memories first stored and then revisited has been contemplated since the time of Plato and Aristotle. These units of memory, or engrams, are poetic portals through which we time travel, gaining hindsight and foresight, more meaning and greater wisdom, and hopes for a future less encumbered. Beyond reminiscences of technicolor sunsets, perhaps memories are simply the brain's records of endless repetitions and familiar neural pathways.

In an era of iPhones, Macbooks, Instagram, and Facebook, everything that’s happened to us in recent memory is at our immediate disposal and made to look better than the original … every day of every year, every meal of every trip, every postcard destination. With constant 24/7 access to the newsreel of our own lives, are we losing our innate ability to remember what matters in the process?

In *Digital Engrams*, L.A. artist Gabriela Ruiz combines sound, video, light and sculpture to create unexpected environments that challenge our sensibilities. The installation considers how images function on and off the screen, and how memories real and curated are the crux of personal and cultural identity. Who do we think we are in this life or the eternal life on the internet hereafter?

Ruiz’s spatial inquiries grapple with the potential erasure of the rituals of memorialization and the richness of material culture so important in her own Latinx heritage and to her sense of self.

–Amanda Krugliak, IH Arts Curator

About the artist:
Gabriela Ruiz is a self-taught artist whose practice blends diverse forms of expression and media, including sculpture, video, painting, and apparel design. Her sculptures incorporate found objects and industrial materials, such as thrift store furniture and insulation foam. Strongly influenced by growing up in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley to immigrant parents from Mexico, Ruiz’s practice is a reflection of the DIY work ethic she was raised under, the vibrancy of Mexican cultural and artistic traditions, and her exposure to subculture and fantasy at a young age as a means to escape the realities of daily life.

*Gabriela Ruiz is the Jean Yokes Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of LSA's 2023 fall Arts & Resistance theme semester.*

Gallery Hours: Mon-Fri 9 am to 5 pm, or by appointment serrag@med.umich.edu

Born and raised in New York City, Satchel Lee is a multi-media artist whose work can best be described as portraiture. Through collaborations with her immediate community, and also using herself as a subject, Lee draws inspiration from the quotidian, creating offbeat images that aim to preserve this moment in time, (re) examine memories (especially those clouded by confusion) all the while asking questions around identity and existence.

Lee holds a BFA from the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Photography at School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

In Lee’s photographic exploration, she investigates the profound connection between places and structures and the echoes of trauma that inhabit them. “Holding Places” is an exhibition that immerses viewers into a visual narrative, inviting them to witness the power of space as holders and conduits for personal memory.

By reconstructing these places by hand in model scale and rendering them not as they were, but how she experienced them, she is able to navigate intimate details and hidden narratives that exist within them. The process of crafting these miniatures becomes a meditative contemplation, giving Lee time to sit and reflect on these past events.

Through Lee’s lens, they capture the visual manifestations of the ghosts of the past. The photographs offer glimpses into spaces where anguish, conflict and distress have left their imprints, sometimes visible, sometimes buried beneath layers of time (and self preservation).

Join us for a celebration of Respond/Resist/Rethink: An Exhibition of Student Art for Change at Stamps Gallery. The exhibition features work by U-M students from across all three campuses. Light refreshments will be served.
In conjunction with the Fall 2023 Theme Semester: Arts & Resistance, Stamps Gallery is partnering with the U‑M Arts Initiative to expand the 4th annual Respond/Resist/Rethink student art exhibition. All undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, or Flint U‑M campuses in Fall 2023 are invited to apply to this juried exhibition that explores what can be done to create more just and equitable futures in the 21st Century and beyond.
The 2023 exhibition will include art of a variety of mediums and will be displayed in four galleries across all three U‑M campuses, including Stamps Gallery (Central Campus, Ann Arbor), Duderstadt Center Gallery (North Campus, Ann Arbor), Riverbank Arts (Flint), and Stamelos Gallery (Dearborn).
The arts play a central role in shaping cultural and political narratives. Artists, designers and creatives of diverse backgrounds have been at the forefront of social change by offering alternate models and ways of thinking, making and creating that do not perpetuate dominant regimes. Creative processes have been used time and again to reveal under-told stories and to resist simple narratives. Regardless of one’s personal politics, an artwork’s potential to change hearts and minds is urgent and necessary. Respond/Resist/Rethink invites students to leverage their creativity to (re)imagine what they can do to create a more just and equitable community in the spaces that they inhabit.

Stop by the Special Collections Research Center, 6th floor Hatcher Library, any time during this open house to learn about Ardis’ involvement in publishing censored materials and smuggling them back into the Soviet Union for the masses.

Join us for a celebration of Respond/Resist/Rethink: An Exhibition of Student Art for Change at Stamelos Gallery, U-M Dearborn.

The Arts and Resistance Theme Semester Mural will be unveiled to the public on Thursday, December 7th, 3-5pm., inside Palmer Commons, plaza level. In addition to meeting the students who painted the mural there will be refreshments and live music performed by U-M student band, The Screws.

Please join us as we celebrate the opening of Take Your Time by Enrico Riley. The reception will take place immediately following Riley's Stamps Lecture (5:30pm at the Michigan Theater).

Artist Enrico Riley is best known for paintings that investigate violence and hope in cultural traditions in African American culture. His new work—created for his exhibition at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery—is personal and abstract. Started as an attempt to paint for himself, away from the center of things and off at the edges, they are from the spaces of private thought that slip into existence and just as easily slip away. They come from an internal conversation and contact with the world. "When I am with them," Riley explains, "I feel a tension between the spaces in the works being present but unnamed. The paintings allow me to observe myself looking. I am acutely aware of time. Maybe they are an invitation to speculate."

Peter Dunn has historically been an object maker as a designer and sculptor. Whether designing furniture or developing the ideas for sculpture, the process has always been the same. Ideas begin as
scribbled images that are then stretched and refined with CAD software. At its core, much of the work studies the manipulation of simple geometry. Dunn looks at the form from different forced perspectives – exploding, augmenting, slicing, repeating, and lighting. This body of work is a study of perception, sympathy, hierarchy, and reality. The “We Are Virus” series is an adaptation from an initial design where it continued to evolve and adapt through manipulation of parts and scale.

Peter Dunn received his BFA from Wayne State University and MFA from University of Michigan. He currently serves on faculty at College for Creative Studies.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. This event is free and open to the public.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens will feature two linked exhibitions created by undergraduate student and former MBGNA DEIJA researcher Mahalina Dimacali. These exhibitions, Rooting Reciprocity and Kina n’da-nowendaaganag / All My Relations, are the culmination of 3 years of research and engaged scholarship to create a framework for botanical gardens rooted in community needs and co-liberatory practice.

Kina n’da-nowendaaganag / All My Relations is an Anishinaabek art show, focused on traditional and contemporary art, and how artists relate to plant relatives through inherent connections to the land. Like Rooting Reciprocity, all signs in the show will be written in community voices.

Rooting Reciprocity In the tropical, temperate, and desert houses of the conservatory, engage with newly designed signs written by global Indigenous community representatives that convey their relationship to a plant relative of their choosing. Each sign is accompanied by life-size portrait installations created by artists Mahalina Dimacali and Zoi Crampton. This exhibition invites visitors to consider the many ways land-based relationships can take shape, connect with culture keepers who preserve these stories, and challenge the colonial information and knowledge systems western botanical gardens are founded upon.

The Museum Studies Program invites students enrolled in any graduate program at the University of Michigan to apply for the Fall 2024 cohort. This multidisciplinary graduate certificate program draws on ideas from the arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, and technology and provides countless opportunities to apply theories in a vast array of museums and cultural institutions on campus, in the region, nationally and around the world.
The MSP curriculum examines the role of museums in society as sites of memory, learning, research, cultural production, public scholarship, civic engagement, and entertainment. The 12-credit certificate program consists of the Museum Studies Seminar (Fall and Winter terms, 6 credits), approved electives (6 credits), and a funded internship. It prepares students for academic and professional careers in museums, heritage sites, arboretums, botanical gardens, zoos and other living collections, and universities.
Application Deadline: February 23, 2024
