The dynamics of a system having energy sources or drains can sometimes be approximated using a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The eigenvalue spectrum of a non-Hermitian lattice also fall into bands, not along the real axis, but on the complex plane. "Spectral topology" characterizes the shape of the shape of the spectrum on the complex plane, and is hence unique to non-Hermitian bands. Nontrivial spectral topology leads to physical phenomena such as the skin effect, the anomalous reflection, and characteristic features in impurity bound states. In this talk, I will introduce recent progress on the study of spectral topology in non-Hermitian bands.

Dr. Lukasz Dusanowski, Associate Research Scholar at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton University, will be delivering a QRI seminar titled "Single Erbium Ions as Telecom Quantum Spin-Photon Interfaces" on March 11th, from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm in West Hall, Room 340 (3rd floor). A Zoom option is also provided.

Seminar Description:

Single erbium ions in crystalline hosts are attractive candidates for solid-state spin-photon interfaces thanks to long-lived spin states and optical transitions in the telecom band, promising a clear advantage for long-distance quantum network applications. These ions can be incorporated into a wide range of host materials, which influence their spin and optical coherence properties through the concentration of other magnetic spins and the erbium site symmetry. Using silicon photonic crystal cavities, we can isolate single erbium ions and investigate their optical and spin properties using resonance fluorescence and optically detected magnetic resonance. In this talk, I will show our recent work on erbium ions implanted into CaWO4, which enabled the observation of the high indistinguishability of subsequently emitted photons in the Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment [1]. This represents a notable step towards the construction of telecom band quantum repeater networks with single erbium ions. I will also discuss our recent progress on generating spin-photon and spin-spin entanglement.

Biological Impacts of Climate Change and Women’s Livelihoods Among Bangladeshi Shodagor Communities
Monday, March 11, 2024 (2 PM – 3:30 PM)

Katie Starkweather
University of Illinois

Human mothers face an adaptive problem. The importance of maternal care and women’s economic contributions to the household throughout evolutionary history and in contemporary societies requires mothers to decide how to allocate their time and energy between work and childcare in ways that support their reproductive success. In Bangladesh, traditionally boat-dwelling, semi-nomadic Shodagor women engage in two different occupations – trading and fishing – that require different trade-offs between time spent in work and in childcare. In this talk, I will discuss these differences and address three questions: 1) What are the social and cultural predictors of variation in women’s work? 2) What role does environmental change play in structuring women’s economic decisions? And 3) Do differences in trade-offs explain differences in fitness consequences for mothers? Examining variation in women’s strategies for solving the adaptive problem of motherhood provides a better understanding of a critical element of human evolution, and also allows scientists to create models to predict how behavior is likely to change in the future in response to ecological changes (e.g., climate change, local disease ecologies) and to predict the impacts of this on human biology.

Dr. Katie Starkweather is an Assistant Professor of Biological Anthropology at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Prior to that, she held two postdoctoral positions, one as an NSF SBE Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of New Mexico and another at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. She received a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Missouri and a Master’s in Anthropology at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Starkweather works in Matlab, Bangladesh with a group of traditionally boat-dwelling, semi-nomadic Shodagor traders and fishers on issues related to women’s work, parental investment, and household divisions of labor, environmental change, and fitness outcomes associated with these socioecological factors, including reproduction, growth and nutrition, and health outcomes. Dr. Starkweather uses a mixed-methods approach to collect multiple types of cross-sectional and longitudinal data in order to answer research questions associated with her interests, and to address the interests and concerns of the Matlab Shodagor communities.

The methods devised by Gustav Mie in 1908 to explain the scattering of electromagnetic waves will be shown to have a close analogy with quantum-mechanical models developed many years later to describe nuclear scattering. In particular, these models use either a complex index of refraction or a complex nuclear scattering potential to account for attenuation caused by non-elastic scattering. I briefly outline the historical development of these models, and give examples illustrating the close analogy between them, their parameters, and the resulting scattering. In these and related scattering models, the ratio of the incident wavelength to the object size, λ/D, can be determined from the scattering characteristics, allowing the extraction of microscopic particle dimensions over many orders of magnitude (e.g. nm to fm). This close analogy allows one to simulate accelerator-based nuclear scattering experiments with table-top optical-scattering experiments.

Abstract: Given a Hecke character of a CM field, the automorphic induction of which to the underlying totally real subfield gives a HIlbert modular form with complex multiplication. By the work of Hida and Tilouine the congruences of such forms are governed by the L-value associated with the Hecke character. On the other hand, the Jacquet-Langlands lift of these modular forms to a quaternion algebra can be realized a the theta lift of the character to the corresponding unitary group. We will focus on the case when the unitary group is definite and discuss how one can p-integrally normalize the theta lift and the Rallis inner product formula. As a result we obtain a similar statement for the congruences. We will also discuss further arithmetic applications if time permits.

A New Approach to Evaluating the Welfare Effects of Decentralized Policies (with William H. Hoyt and Tidiane Ly) (March 11, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/117362 117362-21839216@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 11, 2024 4:00pm

We establish a framework to quantify the welfare effects of decentralized policies. Local policies result in benefit-spillovers, mobility of households and firms, and interjurisdictional fiscal externalities that are not internalized by the government enacting the policy. Their magnitudes are measured by a new metric, the "marginal corrective transfer" (MCT), the share of funding the federal government should provide to induce a locality to internalize these interjurisdictional externalities. Formally, the MCT is estimated as the wedge between the marginal value of public funds (MVPF) of the locality enacting the policy and the MVPF of the entire federation. To calculate this wedge, we develop a rigorous framework for distinguishing between the benefits and costs that are internal and those that are external to the enacting locality. The MCT enables comparisons of local policies, allowing the federal government to prioritize policies based on the relative external benefits and costs. Empirically, we show that property tax cuts, K-12 education, and higher education have positive MCT's, implying federal subsidies should be employed while race-to-the-bottom type policies such as wealth tax cuts and bidding-for-firm programs with negative MCTs should be federally taxed. Depending on the taxing instruments utilized at the state level, we show if states rank policies to intervene on, they may diverge substantially from the federal government and from other states.

This talk is presented by the Public Finance Seminar, sponsored in part by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Elizalde-Winikates Family Fund in Economics and the Economics Strategic Fund.

Counting closed geodesics in the moduli space of Outer space: double exponential growth (March 11, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116377 116377-21836671@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 11, 2024 4:00pm

The problem of counting closed geodesics of bounded length, originally in the setting of negatively curved manifolds, goes back to the classic work of Margulis in 1960s about the dynamics of the geodesic flow. Since then Margulis' results have been generalized to many other contexts where some whiff of hyperbolicity is present.
Thus a 2011 result of Eskin and Mirzakhani shows that for a closed hyperbolic surface S of genus $g\ge 2$, the number $N(L)$ of closed Teichmuller geodesics of length $\le L$ in the moduli space of $S$ grows as $e^{hL}/(hL)$ where $h=6g-6$. The number $N(L)$ is also equal to the number of conjugacy classes of pseudo-Anosov elements $\phi$ in the mapping class group $MCG(S)$ with $\log\lambda(\phi)\le L$, where $\lambda(\phi)>1$ is the ``dilatation" or ``stretch factor" of $\phi$.

We consider an analogous problem in the $Out(F_r)$ setting, for the action of the outer automorphism group $Out(F_r)$ of the free group $F_r$ of rank $r$ on a ``cousin" of the Teichmuller space, called the Culler-Vogtmann Outer space. In this context being a ``fully irreducible" element of $Out(F_r)$ serves as a natural counterpart of being pseudo-Anosov. Every fully irreducible $\phi\in Out(F_r)$ acts on the Outer space as a loxodromic isometry with translation length $\log\lambda(\phi)$, where again $\lambda(\phi)$ is the stretch factor of $\phi$. We estimate the number $N_r(L)$ of fully irreducible elements $\phi\in Out(F_r)$ with $\log\lambda(\phi)\le L$. The number $N_r(L)$ can also be interpreted as the number of homotopy classes of closed “contracting" geodesics in the moduli space of the Outer space. We prove, for $r\ge 3$, that $N_r(L)$ grows \emph{doubly exponentially} in $L$ as $L\to\infty$, in terms of both lower and upper bounds. This result reveals new behavior not present in classic hyperbolic dynamical systems. The talk is based on a joint paper with Catherine Pfaff.

The long time asymptotics of the steplike solutions of the KdV equation on the constant backgrounds has long been well studied at the physical level of rigor. This talk will present some recent mathematically rigorous results that refine and justify the above-mentioned asymptotics. We will also compare the efficiency of the two most common methods --- the Nonlinear Steepest Descent and the Inverse Scattering Transform -- for obtaining the soliton asymptotics over a larger space-time domain and for the most general possible class of steplike initial data.

Magnetism in crystalline materials is traditionally described based on the magnetic moments carried by magnetic atoms, with the formation of magnetic structures understood as self-organization arising from pairwise interactions between these moments. In this talk, I will discuss two examples that transcend this traditional framework, discovered through neutron scattering experiments. Firstly, in cobalt oxides with a layered hexagonal honeycomb lattice [1], we observed novel magnetic structures known as multi-q order [2], characterized by clusters of magnetic moments that are separated from each other by less spinful sites [3], in analogy to molecular solids (such as iodine) featuring weak chemical bonds. Theoretical analysis [4] suggests that multi-moment interactions are crucial for the emergence of such magnetic orders. Secondly, in the near-ferromagnet MnSi, we find that the fundamental magnetic units are not individual Mn atoms, but are instead multi-atom electron clouds dubbed magnetic molecular orbitals [5]. We propose that the understanding of our observations can benefit from a reexamination of the single-particle physics with topological band theory. Given a real (k+m) by n matrix Z, there is an induced map from the TNN (k,n)-Grassmannian to the (k,k+m)-Grassmannian. The image of this map is called the amplituhedron A_{n,k,m}(Z). We will discuss some properties of this object when m=1. In particular, we will see how to view the m=1 amplituhedron as a subcomplex of the TNN (k,n)-Grassmannian and also as a complex of bounded faces of a hyperplane arrangement.

The University Center for the Child and Family (UCCF) is offering new sessions of the virtual Understanding and Managing ADHD – Free Parent and Guardian Workshop for Spring and Summer 2024.

Separation or divorce is difficult to handle in general — when children are in the mix, it becomes that much more complex. Many parents are concerned about the well-being of their children during this time of change. This UCCF workshop delivers practical parenting advice in a collaborative, caring environment for those going through change. We help parents understand their children’s needs during the transition and offer specific suggestions for creating the most beneficial post-divorce parenting relationships.

The workshop is free, but participants are required to register and will receive the Zoom link to access the online event during the registration process.

The program is an approved alternative to the SMILE Program by the Friend of the Court.

The talk will be recorded for later viewing. Coffee and snacks will be available.

Abstract: Cellular space is incredibly crowded with biomolecules yet well-organized. However, we still lack a precise understanding of how cellular spaces at the microscopic scales are spatially organized to give rise to cellular scale behaviors. In this talk, I will discuss how bacteria as simple living systems manage subcellular space to determine cell size and possibly to optimize cell fitness. First, I will show how bacteria cells employ some molecules as a ‘space sensor’; to maintain cell size within a narrow range despite stochasticity during growth. Second, I will introduce our ongoing effort of testing a fundamental hypothesis suggested by our preliminary observations: the membrane real-estate hypothesis – the cytoplasmic membrane is so packed with proteins that the cell needs to fine-tune the density, composition, and organization of the membrane proteins for optimizing cell fitness. We hope these studies will help bridge our understanding of the organization of subcellular components and cell physiology and fitness, one step towards getting the answer to a fundamental question – how life at the cellular scale emerges from biomolecules and their interactions.

Arabic Placement test_March 12, 2024 (12:00pm-3:00pm) (March 12, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115385 115385-21834607@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 12, 2024 12:00pm
Location: 1500 North Quad 105 S. State St. Ann Arbor, MI 48109 (Language Resource Center)
Organized By: Sessions @ Michigan

Welcome to the Arabic Placement TestAbout the testThe test is approximately two hours and a half in length, and it is composed of three portions:a. The writing portion is completed on paper and it is worth a total of 100 points.b. The reading portion is completed on Canvas site, and it is worth a total of 48 points.c. Right after finishing with the reading portion, each student will have a follow-up interview with a proctor. The interviews last approximately 15 minutes and it is worth a total of 20 points.Important: a. The interview portion will be weighted most heavily as it will be used to validate performance on the other portions. The final result/score/rating will thus be based on the student’s performance on the interview above all. Rating of performance on the writing or reading portions is secondary. b. Students who receive 60% or above will be placed in Arabic 401 and thus placed out of the language requirement.c. Students who are not able to write in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) do not need to take the placement test and they will be advised to enroll in Arabic 101.Where can I view my results?Placement results are posted within 7 business days after the test. You will not be notified of your score automatically. You may view your placements via: Wolverine Access > Student Business > Academic Records > View Placement Exam Results.Important information about the test* Placements are valid for only one year. If you fail to register in the course that you are placed in, you will be required to retake the test.* Retaking the placement test is only permitted after the placement results expire.* The test assesses students’ proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), NOT colloquial Arabic.  * If you speak an Arabic dialect but you do not know how to read or write or have little knowledge, feel free to register in Arabic 101.* Students who know some Arabic because they came from an Arabic-speaking household or have studied Arabic before, must take the Arabic proficiency test in order to determine their placement.* Students who have taken Arabic at other institutions and wish to continue their Arabic study at UM must take the placement test to determine their level. Credits for Arabic study undertaken at another institution prior to joining UM or in a summer program while attending UM, transfer in as generic departmental credits and students must take the placement test to determine credit equivalencies to UM courses.* If you place in or beyond the 401 level, you will have satisfied the LSA language requirement. * Students are encouraged to take a placement test as early as possible in their studies in order to determine the level they should enroll in, or if they test out of the language requirement. This is extremely important to avoid delays in graduation and complications with placement.* Arabic 101, 201, 401, 501 are offered ONLY in the Fall semester, and Arabic 102, 202, 402, 504 are ONLY offered in the Winter semester.* Students can take intensive Arabic 103 (the equivalent of Arabic 101 &102, combined), and Arabic 203 (the equivalent of Arabic 201 & 202, combined) in the Spring/Summer terms. If you have questions regarding the placement test, please contact the program director at, mesarabicprogram@umich.edu.

"Carbon fluxes and climate change in mountains"
PREVIEW: The ability of the biosphere to sequester carbon is an important determinant of atmospheric CO2 concentrations, and hence has implications for future climates. Photosynthesis and respiration represent the largest fluxes of C between the atmosphere and the terrestrial biosphere, but the responses of these temperature-dependent physiological processes to warming remain a source of uncertainty in Earth system models. Climate warming impacts ecosystem-scale carbon fluxes through the direct influence of temperature on the rates of photosynthesis and respiration of individual plants, and also through changes in the species composition of plant communities. Examining how these direct and indirect effects of increasing temperatures on ecosystem C fluxes interact is crucial to predict the capacity of ecosystem-scale C storage under future climatic conditions. Here, we use a multi-year factorial warming x dominant species removal experiment in montane meadows at two elevations in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado to examine the abiotic and biotic drivers of C fluxes over a period of eight years.

& with Holly Scheer, MCDB PhD Student
"Enhancer Function and Evolution in Drosophila Pigmentation Variation"
PREVIEW: Morphological diversity is one of the most fascinating aspects of biology. One source of variation in morphology across species is the differential expression of patterning transcription factors that activate downstream cell type-specific genes. The patterns of expression of these transcription factors can change over evolutionary time. My goal is to understand the cis- and trans-regulatory components of differential gene expression and their implications for evolution as a whole. In my study, I compare two different species of fruit flies and their different body color patterns to get mechanistic insight into this evolutionary process.

MICDE Ph.D. Student Seminar: Hannah Van Wyk and Musawer Ahmad Saqif (March 12, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119127 119127-21842246@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 12, 2024 12:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering

Hannah Van Wyk will present her talk: Using a hidden markov model to pinpoint the date of the primary case in a dengue outbreak in rural Ecuador.

An infectious disease outbreak investigation typically consists of retrospectively determining information regarding the outbreak such as the timing of the primary case (the first case of the outbreak, whether detected or not) and transmission dynamics that occurred prior to the outbreak. However, information on the primary case is often hard to obtain, especially in scenarios where the disease has a high asymptomatic ratio. Using a hidden Markov model, we estimate the most likely date of the primary case of a dengue outbreak in a small community in northern coastal Ecuador.

*Bio*:
Hannah is a doctoral student in the Department of Epidemiology. Her research involves using mathematical models of infectious diseases to understand transmission dynamics. She has a background in mathematics and computer science at her undergraduate institution and a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology.

Musawer Ahmad Saqif will present his talk: Fracture and Collapse Simulation of UHPC Structures.

This presentation delves into the advanced simulation techniques for understanding the fracture and collapse behaviors of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) structures. Leveraging finite element modeling and experimental validation, the study elucidates the critical mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of UHPC under various conditions. Through a detailed investigation of microstructural characteristics and their impact on macroscopic performance, the research provides valuable insights into optimizing the design and resilience of UHPC structures against extreme loading scenarios. The findings contribute significantly to the field of civil engineering by enhancing the predictive capabilities for the structural integrity and durability of UHPC infrastructures.

*Bio*:
M. A. Saqif is a fifth year PhD student in Civil Engineering and Scientific Computing at the Computational Structural Simulation Lab. His research interest lies in fracture and collapse simulation of concrete structures.

*The MICDE PhD Student Seminar Series showcases the research of students in the Ph.D. in Scientific Computing. These events are open to the public.*

Continuous-variable many-body systems with interactions involving quartic force fields (QFF) play a crucial role in modeling molecular vibrations and their interactions, thereby serving as a bridge between quantum simulations and practical applications in spectroscopy. In this context, the emerging field of continuous-variable quantum computation (CV-QC) offers a novel approach. CV-QC leverages continuous quantum information processing units (qumodes), mapping each continuous degree of freedom in the system being simulated onto a corresponding qumode of the quantum device. This paradigm presents a distinct contrast to digital quantum simulation methods, such as the Zalka-Wiesner method, which discretizes continuous-variable systems for simulation on digital quantum information platforms. In this talk, we will explore the application of CV-QC to both quantum and classical many-body systems, with a focus on systems described by QFFs and classical interacting particle systems.

Future quantum information science and technology would rely on our ability to synthesize and control quantum materials. These materials need to be tailored on atomic scale with increasing complexity and diversity leading to new combinations of properties and functionalities that can enable quantum states to be prepared and processed. In this talk we describe our recent work investigating non-equilibrium MBE synthesis of artificially sequenced complex superlattice compounds. The atomic stacking sequences within the unit cell of the novel superlattice compounds are “programmed” by sequential deposition of one atomic layer at a time, starting with the model system containing two ternary Heusler compounds (e.g., Co_2MnSi and Fe_2TiSi), and various other atomic stacking sequences. This approach may provide opportunities to encode properties and functionalities into materials.

A representation of a group G is said to be rigid, if it cannot be continuously deformed to a non-isomorphic representation. If G happens to be the fundamental group of a complex projective manifold, rigid representations are conjectured (by Carlos Simpson) to be of geometric origin. In this talk I will outline the basic properties of rigid local systems and discuss several consequences of Simpson‘s conjecture. I will then outline recent progress on these questions (joint work with Hélène Esnault) and briefly mention applications to geometry and number theory such as the recent resolution of the André-Oort conjecture by Pila-Shankar-Tsimerman.

2 - Making Confident Financial Decisions
3 - Ultimate Financial Wellness
4 - Caring for Your$elf
5 - Be The Boss of Your Finances

Have you had to turn down an invite to go out with friends because you can’t afford it? What about telling your family you actually can’t send money home? Or explain to your friends in the lab that you don’t want to spend money on a pizza dinner? It can feel awkward and uncomfortable to say “no,” but it’s an important part of using your money in a way that works for you. Financial boundaries are guidelines you put in place to help you say “no” with confidence and “yes” with enthusiasm.

In this interactive workshop facilitated by U-M alum and financial therapist Lindsay Bryan-Podvin, you’ll learn the importance of boundaries, how to create and honor financial ones, and toss the ones that don’t match your unique circumstances.

Heavy-tailed distributions for random variables have been studied extensively, including, for example, in the study of random matrices, in spin glass models in order to bridge the mean-field spin models and the more realistic ones with short-range interactions. In this talk, we consider heavy-tailed distributions that are governed by a power law density. After covering definitions and several fundamental properties, we will discuss a model for random graphs that was developed in an effort to explain the power law behavior observed in many complex networks in reality.

Quantum pseudorandom states are efficiently preparable states that are indistinguishable from truly Haar random states to an efficient observer. First defined by Ji, Liu and Song, such states have found a wide variety of applications in areas such as quantum gravity and cryptography. A fundamental question is exactly how much entanglement is required to create such states. Haar-random states, as well as t-designs for t ≥ 2, exhibit near maximal entanglement. Here we provide the first construction of pseudorandom states with only polylogarithmic entanglement entropy across an equipartition of the qubits, which is the minimum possible. Our construction can be based on any one-way function secure against quantum attack.

More fundamentally, our work calls into question to what extent entanglement is a "feelable" (or efficiently observable) quantity of quantum systems. Inspired by recent work of Gheorghiu and Hoban, we define a new notion which we call "pseudoentanglement", which are ensembles of efficiently constructible quantum states which hide their entanglement entropy. We show such states exist in the strongest form possible while simultaneously being pseudorandom states.

Any ring R of characteristic p > 0 is equipped with many natural endomorphisms: for e > 0, the e-th Frobenius map is given by (F^e)(r) = r^(p^e). In this talk, we'll study Hom_R(F^e_*R, R): the R-module of splittings of this map. When R is a regular ring, or more generally a Gorenstein ring, this R-module can be canonically identified with F^e_*R itself. When S = R/I is a quotient of a regular ring, the splittings of F^e: R/I -> R/I can be understood in terms of the ideal I. Using this framework, we demonstrate criteria for determining whether a ring is F-split or F-regular.

Endoscopy arises from the attempt to stabilize the trace formula. The "stabilization" of the trace formula is roughly speaking a procedure to make the trace formula more useful for applications and it is an extremely important tool in the Langlands program. I will attempt to motivate the role that endoscopy plays by gently walking through the stabilization of the elliptic regular part of the trace formula for SL(2). During our walkthrough, we will see glimpses of the (elliptic) endoscopic groups, transfer factors, endoscopic transfer of functions, cohomological invariants, etc.—objects which all occur naturally in the theory of endoscopy.

I will report on joint work in progress with Wyss and Ziegler. The first part of this talk will be a gentle introduction to p-adic integration, focusing on the case of quotient singularities where it is closely related to orbifold cohomology. In the second half we will compute p-adic integrals for singular moduli spaces of objects in certain abelian categories (e.g. representations of a symmetric quiver, meromorphic Higgs bundles, etc) and see that p-adic integration can be related to BPS cohomology arising in the theory of Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Lloyd Shapley’s cooperative value allocation theory is a central concept in game theory that is widely applied in various fields to assess individual contributions and allocate resources. The Shapley value formula and his four defining axioms form the foundation of the theory.

We interpret the Shapley value as an expectation of a certain stochastic path integral, with each path representing a general coalition process. As a result, the value allocation is naturally extended to all partial coalition states. Furthermore, the new allocation scheme can be readily generalized by path-integrating various edge flows, which we refer to as the f-Shapley value. Finally, by employing Hodge theory on graphs, we show how to compute the stochastic path integral via the graph Poisson equation.

Structural racism in the United States is the normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics—historical, cultural, institutional, and interpersonal—that routinely advantages white people while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity primarily characterized by white supremacy—the preferential treatment, privilege, and power for white people at the expense of other racially oppressed people. It is also important to recognize that racism is a global issue and continues to be perpetuated in societies across the globe and it manifests in many different ways at various levels. This anti-racism workshop in an abroad context aims to offer an entryway for students to engage in observing how racism plays out in different societies outside the United States, utilizing examples, particularly media representation, that may reflect deeper messages, and what it means to be anti-racist for American students who have been abroad, or may be visiting, studying, or traveling abroad.

This workshop will engage participants in the following activities:
Better understanding of the phrase “anti-racism”
Learning about race and its nuances
Recognizing how culture can shape the development of racism and power structures
Seeing how media around the world uphold oppression in different ways
Creating action steps toward actively recognizing oppression abroad
This workshop is designed for U-M master's students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral scholars on all three campuses; therefore, only U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are permitted to register for this workshop. While this workshop is being facilitated on behalf of Rackham’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Professional Development Certificate Program, it is open to all U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Understanding Barriers to Mental Health Related Help-Seeking in Undergraduate Engineers (March 14, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120131 120131-21844101@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 14, 2024 2:00pm

Abstract: The prevalence of mental health disorders on college campuses is of increasing concern. Within engineering, there has been an increase in the amount of research conducted on characterizing student mental health and understanding the influence of engineering culture on mental wellness. Research has shown that engineering students in mental health distress are less likely to have received professional help compared to their peers. This identifies a treatment gap for engineering students, meaning that only a portion of those in mental health distress are seeking professional treatment. Addressing the treatment gap can improve the prognosis of mental health problems and reduce progression to more chronic or severe disorders. Through this talk, I will present results of both qualitative and quantitative research studies aimed at better understanding the beliefs that engineering students have about seeking help for a mental health concern. In particular, I will discuss barriers and facilitators to help-seeking including challenges in navigating the mental healthcare system, the perception that help-seeking is a sacrifice of time and academics, and the importance of mental health culture in engineering. Further, I will talk about the influence of engineering student, faculty and staff messaging on students’ beliefs about help seeking. Results of this work will provide guidance for intervention development to improve mental health related help-seeking in undergraduate engineering students.

This event is part of our ongoing Thursday Seminar Series.

PREVIEW: Systematics or taxonomy is often seen as an end in itself, but like all science it is a key facilitator of downstream studies and innovations. The results of taxonomy (including systematics and phylogeny) are the foundational cornerstones for our understanding of how the world works, and for how we can best conserve and protect a dynamic set of ecosystems for the future. My taxonomic work has focused on Solanum, one of the largest genera of flowering plants, and has involved making sometimes difficult linkages to diverse communities of scientists across plant biology. The size of Solanum, with some 1,250 currently recognised species means that assembling monophyletic groups of species and tackling these monographically has been thought to be too challenging; big genera have been something for taxonomists to avoid. But the landscape is changing, working with these large groups has significant advantages. Solanum also contains many species of agricultural importance, often complicating primary taxonomy with a superfluity of names from the past. Of course, this work has not been done alone, but with a dynamic and exciting group all of whom have brought their skills and perspectives to the task in hand. In this talk I will take you through the journey we have made, from a set of small taxonomically focused monographs and floras to studies involving genomes and advances in plant breeding. The path the Solanum group has taken is always centred in systematics – understanding species and their relationships. Large, species-rich genera like Solanum are traditionally seen as problems, but with a multidisciplinary approach that is broad-minded and open to new ideas and paths, can reveal much about plant evolution. It can also bring systematics and taxonomy to the table as critical components of solutions to today’s societal and environmental problems.

Abstract: In this talk, Kaizheng Wang will present a versatile framework for statistical learning in non-stationary environments. In each time period, their approach applies a stability principle to select a look-back window that maximizes the utilization of historical data while keeping the cumulative bias within an acceptable range relative to the stochastic error. Their theory showcases the adaptability of this approach to unknown non-stationarity. The regret bound is minimax optimal up to logarithmic factors when the population losses are strongly convex, or Lipschitz only. At the heart of our analysis lie two novel components: a measure of similarity between functions and a segmentation technique for dividing the non-stationary data sequence into quasi-stationary pieces. The talk is based on joint work with Chengpiao Huang.

Abstract:
The global incidence of dementia is increasing, with over 9.9 million new cases each year, translating to a new diagnosis every 3.2 seconds. This upward trend is expected to intensify due to the growing aging population worldwide. Research into modeling dementia encounters unique challenges, including sparse data and complex non-linear interactions between variables and outcomes. In this talk, I will share my recent work on employing artificial intelligence to unravel the mechanisms behind aging and dementia. This work leverages combined insights from data analysis and domain knowledge. Specifically, for imaging-based analysis, we have developed a novel "subspace network" approach. This technique employs efficient deep learning models for non-linear multi-task learning, even with limited data. The subspace network incrementally refines predictions by sketching a low-dimensional subspace that facilitates knowledge transfer across tasks. Our empirical findings show that this method efficiently identifies the correct parameter subspaces and surpasses existing models in predicting clinical scores of dementia from brain imaging data. Additionally, we explore the use of language markers in diagnosing dementia early. We introduce a novel reinforcement learning framework for training a dialogue agent that efficiently interacts with elderly individuals to detect signs of dementia. This agent optimizes conversations by generating a disease-specific lexical probability distribution, aiming to increase diagnostic precision while minimizing the number of conversational turns needed. We have also developed a cross-modality learning framework that synergizes language markers with brain imaging data. By using a contrastive loss technique, this framework aligns linguistic and imaging data, enhancing the predictive accuracy of language-based markers with the help of auxiliary imaging variables derived from language.

A GL-variety is a reduced affine scheme whose coordinate ring is a polynomial representation that is finitely generated up to the action of the infinite general linear group GL.

Equivalently, GL-varieties are inverse limits of Vec-varieties, functors from the category of finite dimensional vector spaces to reduced affine varieties.

In a joint work with Jan Draisma and Christopher Chiu, taking the perspective of Vec-varieties, we show that the (inverse) limit of the singular loci of a Vec-variety evaluated in dimension n defines a closed Vec-subvariety of “singular points”.

In a forthcoming paper with Andrew Snowden, we show that the GL-variety obtained from these "singular points" is actually the locus of singular points of the initial GL-variety, namely, the following loci coincide:

1. The closed GL-variety arising from taking the limit of the singular points in the corresponding Vec-variety.
2. The locus of points where the module of Kähler differential is not flat.
3. The locus of points where the tangent space and tangent cone are not isomorphic.
4. The locus of points that are not formally smooth.
5. The locus of points where there is not an n_0 such that for all n> n_0 an n-jet lift to an n+1-jet.

In this talk, I will present the necessary background and more details about the aforementioned results.

We study the phase transition phenomenon of the singular Gibbs measure associated with the Schrödinger-wave systems, initiated by Lebowitz, Rose, and Speer (1988). In the three-dimensional case, this problem turns out to be critical, exhibiting a phase transition according to the size of the coupling constant. In the weakly coupling region, the Gibbs measure can be constructed as a probability measure, which is singular with respect to the Gaussian free field. On the other hand, in the strong coupling case, the Gibbs measure can not be normalized as a probability measure. In particular, the finite-dimensional truncated Gibbs measures have no weak limit, even up to a subsequence.

Topotactic transformation of epitaxial thin films by soft chemistry allows the realisation of high crystalline quality metastable phases. In this talk I will discuss two physics topics that can be addressed through harnessing topotactic transformations in transition metal oxides. First, infinite-layer nickelate superconductors (RNiO_2 ) are synthesised by topotactically reducing their perovskite (RNiO_3 ) counterparts. This enables the unfavourable Ni+ ion and unlocks a novel family of unconventional superconductors [1]. In particular I will focus on results from low-energy muon spin rotation [2] that reveal local magnetism in these materials that 1) onsets at rather high temperature, 2) is independent of the rare earth 4f electrons, 3) appears to be robust to doping 4) is antiferromagnetic and possibly short-range-ordered in nature and 5) coexists with superconductivity at low temperatures. From these conclusions we can make some comparisons with the nominally-similar copper-oxide superconductors.

Secondly, perovskite alkali earth ferrites (AFe ^{4+} O_3) are fascinating helimagnetic compounds, proposed to host a high density skyrmion lattice despite the chemical centrosymmetry [3]. Topotactic oxidation of the more stable Fe^{3+} material, AFeO_{2.5}, is necessary to synthesise high quality samples. I will touch briefly on our recent work to map out the helimagnetic phases in temperature, magnetic field and, now, biaxial strain.

Revealing Molecular Pathology at High Chemical and Spatial Resolutions Using Mass Spectrometry (March 14, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/109428 109428-21822015@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 14, 2024 4:00pm

Imaging mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical technique for analyzing the spatial lipidome. This technology enables the visualization of molecular pathology directly in tissues by combining the specificity of mass spectrometry with the spatial fidelity of microscopic imaging. This label-free methodology has proven exceptionally useful in research areas such as cancer diagnosis, diabetes, and infectious disease. However, state-of-the-art experiments stress the limits of current analytical technologies, necessitating improvements in molecular specificity and sensitivity in order to answer increasingly complicated biological and clinical hypotheses. Especially when studying lipids, many isobaric (i.e., same nominal mass) and isomeric (i.e., same exact mass) compounds exist that complicate spectral analysis, with each structure having a potentially unique cellular function. The Prentice Lab develops instrumentation and novel gas-phase reactions to provide unparalleled levels of chemical resolution. These gas-phase transformations are fast, efficient, and specific, making them ideally suited for implementation into imaging mass spectrometry workflows. For example, these workflows have enabled the identification of multiple sn-positional phosphatidylcholine isomers, the separation of isobaric phosphatidylserines and sulfatides, and the identification of fatty acid double bond isomers using a variety of charge transfer and covalent ion/ion reactions as well as ion/electron and ion/photon reactions. Working with biologists and clinicians, we then leverage these novel imaging technologies to understand the molecular events associated with important problems in human health, including infectious disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases.

The isomonodromic deformation plays a universal role in
connecting various research areas of mathematics and physics. In this
talk, I am going to discuss the isomonodromy theory for a new class of
Fuchsian-type elliptic second-order equations defined on the moduli
space of elliptic curves with the parameter τ ∈ H (upper half-plane).
We will observe that the isomonodromic deformation equation is
governed by a new second-order nonlinear equation with a deep
connection to the Painlevé VI equation but admits essentially
different properties from PVI. Indeed, the new isomonodromic
deformation equation, distinct from the Painlevé VI equation, admits
so-called movable branch points that can be explicitly determined by
their monodromy data.

Abstract: Incorporating the auxiliary information into the survey estimation is a fundamental problem in survey sampling. Calibration weighting is a popular tool for incorporating the auxiliary information. The calibration weighting method of Deville and Sarndal (1992) uses a distance measure between the design weights and the final weights to solve the optimization problem with calibration constraints.

In this paper, we propose a new framework using generalized entropy as the objective function for optimization. Design weights are used in the constraints, rather than in the objective function, to achieve design consistency. The new calibration framework is attractive as it is general and can produce more efficient calibration weights than the classical calibration weights. Furthermore, we identify the optimal choice of the generalized entropy function that achieves the minimum variance among the different choices of the generalized entropy function under the same constraints. Asymptotic properties, such as design consistency and asymptotic normality, are presented rigorously. An extension of the proposed method to doubly robust propensity score estimation will also be presented.

The University Center for the Child and Family is offering a new virtual session for the ESDM Parent Training Group in Spring 2024. The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an evidence-based treatment model for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The group is designed for parents and caregivers with children ages 5 and under who have diagnosed or suspected ASD or a Developmental Delay.

The parent training group is designed to teach parents these strategies to increase the number of intervention hours that young children receive. A secondary goal is to support parents of children with ASD/Developmental Delays and help them develop a community of parents in a similar life stage. Since it is a parent training group, children are welcome but not required to attend.

More to come!
Preview: Herbaria are important repositories of plant diversity information, but the degree to which they are useful in addressing biodiversity loss in the here and now has been questioned. How can a dead organism pressed on a bit of paper be of any use in addressing an urgent societal challenge especially in the face of widespread habitat loss in the tropics? Most of the world’s tropical plant species are known from five or fewer digitally available herbarium specimens, with significant implications for all downstream analyses using species distribution data, including conservation assessments, biogeographic analyses, protected area planning, and taxonomic accounts. Digitized herbarium specimens, however, are biased. Specimens in large, historical herbaria in richer countries are much more likely to be databased, available online, and imaged and therefore verifiable. Many such herbaria have a long colonial legacy and in many cases the bulk of their collections are online but often have
been collected long ago. Conversely, specimens in smaller, local herbaria in poorer, tropical countries are much less likely to be available online but have usually been collected much more recently, however, specimens in local herbaria are much less likely to be included in downstream analyses, meaning local investigator’s contributions are less likely to be included, with potential impacts on their careers. Using datasets of Begonia and Solanum from Perú I will explore the disproportionate contribution of local herbaria and botanists to our knowledge of tropical plant distributions, and link this to the need for prioritization of these institutions for digital access and the importance of equity in science.

EcoUM in partnership with ZeroWaste.org is hosting a campus-wide zero waste challenge from March 17-23! The challenge is a chance to learn how to live a lifestyle that doesn’t create waste and supports the circular economy (repair, refill, reuse).

Sign up for the challenge and invite your friends so we can get as many people going zero waste on campus as possible. Everyone who signs up will be entered into a drawing for prizes from local businesses and get daily emails with tips that will teach you, step-by-step, how to produce less waste. There will also be panel discussions, events, and opportunities to get involved in systemic work to make our campus as zero waste as possible. You can learn more about the challenge here!

Discrete Morse Theory for Symmetric Delta-complexes (March 15, 2024 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119032 119032-21842058@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 15, 2024 3:00pm
Location: East Hall
Organized By: Combinatorics Seminar - Department of Mathematics

In this talk, we generalize discrete Morse theory to the context of symmetric Delta-complexes. First introduced by Forman, discrete Morse theory is an adaptation of Morse theory for regular CW-complexes. It gives a schematic for collapsing cells in a CW-complex while maintaining the same homotopy type. On the other hand, symmetric Delta-complexes are a generalization of cell-complexes. They are topological spaces built from quotients of standard simplices, and they have played important roles in recent developments of tropical geometry. We generalize various concepts from discrete Morse theory, including discrete Morse functions and acyclic matchings on face posets, and prove parallel theorems for symmetric Delta-complexes. We also apply this new theory to the moduli space of tropical abelian varieties.

Mukai's seminal work proved that the "convolution" with the Poincaré line bundle induces an equivalence of the derived categories of an abelian variety and its dual variety. This equivalence specializes to rational Chow groups of these varieties are isomorphic. We will exploit this structure to exhibit that the rational Chow ring of an abelian variety has an interesting decomposition called the Beauville decomposition.

Embark on a creative journey in nature with the “Youth Art for the Earth” series—dynamic, eco-centric art experiences crafted for middle and high school students. In these sessions, young artists are encouraged to channel their innermost reflections and establish deep connections with the natural world through the powerful language of art.

The workshops encompass outdoor exploration, indoor collage-making, and dedicated time for reflection and sharing. We believe that developing personal ties to the land fosters a sense of place, care for the environment, and mutual consideration.

Middle and high school youth are invited to participate in one of four Youth Art for the Earth workshops, the completed artworks of which will be displayed during MBGNA’s Youth Art exhibition. These workshops will be offered at no cost, with all necessary materials provided. Please note that registration is required.

The completed artworks will be on display during MBGNA’s Youth Art exhibit, running from Saturday, April 20, to Sunday, June 2, 2024. A reception for artists, families, and friends is scheduled for Sunday, June 2, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the west lobby.

Love Her Collective: Developing and sustaining a community-academic partnership to address HIV inequities among transgender women of color in Detroit

Transgender women of color have a long history of organizing, activism, and service to sustain their communities under hostile social, political, and economic conditions. However, research efforts to address the health inequities these communities face often fail to ensure transgender women of color have meaningful leadership roles throughout the entire research process. The “Love Her Collective” is a community-academic partnership between Trans Sistas of Color Project-Detroit (TSoCP) and researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health formed around the needs, interests, and priorities of transgender women of color in Detroit. Over the past 6 years, the Love Her Collective has conducted several projects to identify and address social determinants of HIV inequities in this community. This presentation will describe community-led projects addressing violence and trauma, legal barriers to legal gender affirmation, and economic vulnerability. It will focus on the ethics and benefits surrounding community leadership in health equity research and include concrete recommendations for population health researchers working with populations frequently excluded and marginalized by academic research.

Kristi E. Gamarel (she/her) is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She has a background in social and personality psychology with additional training in health psychology and public health. Her program of research focuses on LGBTQ+ health, with a particular focus on using CBPR principles to understand and address health inequities.

RCGD Seminar Series: Toward Resolving the Darwinian Paradox of Same-Sex Sexual Behavior (March 18, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118658 118658-21841374@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 18, 2024 2:00pm

Because human same-sex sexual behavior (SSB) is heritable and leads to fewer offspring, the maintenance of SSB-associated alleles in populations requires an explanation. While several evolutionary genetic hypotheses have been proposed, most lack strong empirical evidence. I will discuss recent UK Biobank-based genomic studies that shed light on this long-standing “Darwinian paradox."

Group Dynamics Seminar Series
The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included discussions in “Law and Psychology,” “Racism and Discrimination,” “Social Media,” and “New Directions in Social Psychology.”

The Winter 2024 Series is co-sponsored by the Evolution and Human Adaptation Program (EHAP) at the University of Michigan.

Evolution and Human Behavior

What can wasps teach us about the evolution of animal minds? How does indirect reciprocity shape cooperation in human groups? Why are people vulnerable to obesity– especially in marginalized groups? This seminar series will address these questions, and more, from the perspective of evolutionary theory. The approach will draw on behavioral ecology, which views adaptive behavior as responsive to ecological variation. The speakers, from anthropology and other fields, are known for the depth of their long-term field studies in Kenya, Mali, Bangladesh, the United States, Dominica, Bolivia, the Pacific Islands, and other locales.

RCGD/EHAP Seminars will be held at ISR Thompson 1430. Where permitted by speakers, events will be recorded. The related class meets at 1 at 1450. To meet with external speakers or to find out more about these events, contact Erin Loomas at eloomas@umich.edu.

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider has been collecting the world’s highest-intensity collisions at the Upsilon(4S) since 2019. A data set comparable in size to that of predecessor experiments, and collected with the new detector, enables unique or world-leading results. Examples include indirect searches for non-standard-model physics in the weak interactions of quarks, determinations of fundamental standard-model parameters, and direct searches for low-mass dark matter. This talk presents a selection of recent results and briefly discusses future perspectives.

Nature uses barely more than a handful of transition metal ions. Yet, when incorporated into protein scaffolds, this limited set of metal ions carry out innumerable cellular functions and execute essential biochemical transformations such as photochemical H2O oxidation, O2 or CO2 reduction, and N2 fixation, highlighting the outsized importance of metalloproteins in biology. Elucidating the intricate interplay between metal ions and protein structures has been the focus of extensive structural and mechanistic scrutiny over the last several decades. As a result, we have gained a reasonably detailed understanding of how metal ions shape protein structures and how protein structures in turn influence metal reactivity. By contrast, translating this knowledge into an ability to construct functional metalloproteins from scratch remains a great challenge.

Motivated by a desire to (a) build new bioinorganic functions beyond what nature has invented and (b) retrace the routes for the emergence of bioinorganic complexity during evolution, we have developed a design approach in which folded proteins are used as synthons for building supramolecular complexes through metal-mediated self-assembly. The interfaces in the resulting protein superstructures are subsequently tailored with covalent, non-covalent or additional metal-coordination interactions for stabilization and incorporation of new functionalities. This strategy has not only enabled the construction of functional metalloproteins and protein-based materials with unusual properties, but also led to the discovery of fundamental design principles that govern the metal-protein interplay. This presentation will focus on a few examples from our laboratory.

Noncommutative or free probability is a branch of mathematics that is useful for describing the large-N limits of many N×N random matrix models. In this theory, classical probability spaces are replaced by pairs (𝒜,𝜏), where 𝒜 is an (operator) algebra and 𝜏 : 𝒜 → ℂ is a certain kind of linear functional. In such a pair, 𝒜 and 𝜏 are conceptualized as the space of ``noncommutative random variables'' and the ``expectation'' functional on 𝒜, respectively. The analogy with classical probability goes much further; indeed, there are notions of distribution, independence, L^p-spaces, conditional expectation, and more. My talk will focus on my recent joint work with David Jekel and Todd Kemp on developing a noncommutative theory of stochastic calculus. I shall frame the discussion around some joint work in progress with Guillaume Cébron and Nicolas Gilliers: applications of the theory to the characterization of large-N limits of solutions to N×N matrix stochastic differential equations.

Abstract: Using E. coli as a model system, we have developed new approaches to study damage recognition and processing in vivo for three major DNA repair pathways, nucleotide excision repair (NER), ribonucleotide excision repair (RER), and base excision repair (BER). Our recent findings let us to formulate a conceptually new model of global transcription-driven repair (TDR), in which RNA polymerase serves as the indispensable genome-wide DNA damage sensor and
also delivery vehicle and platform for the assembly of specialized repair complexes in living cells. The model provides a framework for better understanding genotoxic stress response and genome instability in bacteria and beyond.

Keywords: DNA repair, transcription elongation, RNA polymerase, ppGpp, NER, BER, RER

Dyck paths are combinatorial objects enumerated by the Catalan numbers. We can write a generating function for Dyck paths, using q to keep track of the area statistic, and t to keep track of the bounce statistic. Amazingly, while this function is symmetric in q and t, a bijection on Dyck paths that swaps area and bounce continues to elude even the most tenacious combinatistas. Recent work of Guoce Xin and Yingrui Zhang suggests promising results from studying a generalization of Dyck paths. Drawing inspiration from this work, we will discuss how to view Dyck paths as integer points of cones, hoping that the geometric perspective will shed new light on this problem. This is joint work with Matthias Beck, Mitsuki Hanada, Max Hlavacek, John Lentfer, and Andrés Vindas Meléndez.

Abstract: A series of conjectures of Steve Kudla, following classical work of Hirzerbuch-Zagier, Gross-Zagier and Gross-Kohnen-Zagier, predicts that (arithmetic) special cycle classes on certain Shimura varieties can be viewed as Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms in a suitable sense. There is a difficulty even in the formulation of the problem, because the 'natural' definition of cycles associated with degenerate coefficients yields cycles in the wrong degree, an issue that gets rather more severe when one tries to work over the integral model. I'll explain how the theory of virtual fundamental classes for certain derived complete intersection maps gives a systematic fix for this issue, and how recent developments in integral p-adic Hodge theory (joint w. Mathew and Gardner) help to construct such maps.

This is a part of our ongoing Tuesday Seminar Series.

Preview: Canines have proven time and time again to be an extremely useful modern organism, due to high inbreeding within their breed structure, heavy artificial selection, and reflection of human disease phenotypes. However, research on canine assemblies and structural variations have lagged behind human, mouse, or rat research due to a lack of genomic resources, and an important part of these are duplication. Large genomic duplications have gone relatively uninvestigated in modern canine research, largely due to the difficulties in assembling and assessing them properly as a result of their size and conflicting nature. In this investigation, with the recent explosion and availability of canine genomic researchers, we searched for structural variations, copy number variations, and retrocopies, which are all subcategories of genomic duplications. By comparing unique retrocopies across the nine canines we have available, and calculating the number of generations since genome divergence, we were able to determine a rate of novel retrocopy insertion at an average of 1/693 births. Together, our investigation illustrates both the difficulties of finding duplications and retrocopies, and highlights the variable representation of duplications across canines.

Abstract: We consider the graphon mean-field system introduced in the work of Bayraktar, Chakraborty, and Wu. It is the large-population limit of a heterogeneously interacting diffusive particle system, where the interaction is of mean-field type with weights characterized by an underlying graphon function. Through observation of continuous-time trajectories within the particle system, we construct plug-in estimators of the particle density, the drift coefficient, and thus the graphon interaction weights of the mean-field system. Our estimators for the density and drift are direct results of kernel interpolation on the empirical data, and a deconvolution method leads to an estimator of the underlying graphon function. We show that, as the number of particles increases, the graphon estimator converges to the true graphon function pointwisely, and as a consequence, in the cut metric. Besides, we conduct a minimax analysis within a particular class of particle systems to justify the pointwise optimality of the density and drift estimators.

CM-AMO Seminar | Developing a Formalism for the Beta Decay of Helium-6 (March 19, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119053 119053-21842092@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 4:00pm

Investigating the beta decay of helium-6 has yielded significant physical insights. It helped clarify the V-A character of the weak interaction [1] and continues to be pivotal in probing for physics beyond the Standard Model by examining potential deviations [2]. During the beta decay of helium-6, the emitted beta particle corresponds to an expanding spherical shell of charge or Coulomb pulse that can eject one or both electrons. This shake-off must be accounted for in balancing energy and momentum to determine the critical electron antineutrino angular correlations. The principal challenge lies in separating the overlapping single and double ionization channels. Calculations have consistently overestimated double ionization compared with observations [3]. Our new theoretical method addresses this by partitioning the overlapping states into distinct charge states using projection operators [4]. This results in closer alignment with experiment; however, discrepancies persist. I will outline our continuing efforts to refine this approach, highlighting the use of delta function matrix elements to assess the fidelity of the daughter ion's charge state.

The one-electron pseudostates used to form the aforementioned projection operators are interesting in their own right. These pseudospectra are useful in several atomic physics problems requiring a complete set of states, especially those with important contributions from very-high-energy intermediate states. An example of this is the Bethe logarithm component of the Lamb shift, a leading order QED correction [5]. Our current activities on this problem will also be discussed.

Furthermore, I will touch on recent work concerning the theory of radiative transitions, where the usual gauge equivalence of the length and velocity forms applies only in the limit of infinite nuclear mass. We have extended this to the case of finite nuclear mass [6], developing a formalism which imposes strict constraints on calculations of atomic properties involving n-photon transitions, such as absorption and spontaneous decay.

Sumner Myers Colloqium: Parabolic Towers and the Asymptotic Geometry of the Mandelbrot set (March 19, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120208 120208-21844223@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 4:00pm

Understanding the geometry of the Mandelbrot set has been a central pillar of holomorphic dynamics over the past four decades. Much of its structure is now understood, but a critical question remains unresolved: is the Mandelbrot set locally connected? The first major breakthrough towards this conjecture was achieved by Yoccoz in the nineties, who proved that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at all parameters which are not infinitely quadratic-like renormalizable. A key ingredient in Yoccoz’s work is the PLY-inequality, which bounds the diameter of certain subsets, called limbs, of the Mandelbrot set. These limbs are naturally labeled by the rational numbers, and the PLY-inequality asserts that the p/q-limb of the Mandelbrot set has size O(1/q). Milnor conjectured that O(1/q2) is the correct scale. For any N ≥ 1, the main result of this thesis is to verify Milnor’s conjecture for all p/q-limbs where a finite continued fraction of p/q has uniformly bounded length. Our strategy relies on careful analysis of the bifurcation of parabolic fixed points; we also further develop some of the classical theory in this area. We introduce parabolic and near-parabolic renormalization operators for maps which have parabolic fixed points of arbitrary multiplier and there perturbations, constructing invariant classes for these operators. We provide an alternative definition to the parabolic towers introduced by Epstein and construct a dynamically natural topology on the space of all parabolic towers. We also study the dynamics of Lavaurs maps, constructing analogues of polynomial external rays for these functions showing that these rays arise as the Hausdorff limits of polynomial external rays.

In this talk, we will learn about Wave Kinetic Theory through the lens of the Cubic Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation. We will begin with an overview of the Wave Kinetic Equation and then talk about how one could prove that it holds. One of the major aspects of proofs used to establish Kinetic Theory is that the problem can be reduced to a counting problem of certain types of mathematical trees/molecules. We focus on the main steps of this reduction and the challenges we may encounter in the counting problem.

Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop for students that introduces principles and practices of equitable, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy, activism, policy, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships, center community-defined priorities, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.

**New for 2023-24, this workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering, Engaging, and Exiting (E3) session. If you’ve attended that session in the past, you’ll gain additional knowledge from this session.**

In this learning seminar, we have been converting questions about face counts of polytopes into questions about the cohomology of toric varieties. In the case of toric varieties associated to a (nice enough) fan, the cohomology is isomorphic to a combinatorial Chow ring. As their name suggests, the generators and relations of these rings can be described directly from the combinatorics of the fan. We will describe these rings, and give several detailed examples.

I propose a model of a skill-replacing routine-biased-technological-change (SR- RBTC). In this model, technology substitutes the usage of skill in routine tasks, in contrast to standard RBTC models which assume technology replaces the workers themselves. The SR-RBTC model explains three key trends that are inconsistent with standard RBTC models: why specifically middle-wages declined even though routine workers are dispersed across the entire bottom half of the wage distribution, why middle-wages stopped declining while the technological change continued, and why there is no substantial decline in the average wage of routine workers. I derive two new testable predictions from the model: a decrease in return to skill, and a decrease in skill level in routine occupations. I use an interactive-fixed-effect model to con- firm both predictions. Since SR-RBTC violates the ignorability assumption required by standard decomposition methods, I introduce “skewness decomposition” to show that SR-RBTC is the main driver of bottom-half inequality trends.

U.S. employers and the federal government devote more than 1.5% of GDP annually towards promoting Defined Contribution retirement saving. We study the distributional and lifetime impact of these savings incentives across racial groups using a new employer-employee linked data set covering millions of Americans. The average contribution rate of Black and Hispanic workers is roughly 40% lower than that of White workers. The rich and the children of the rich save more; racial differences in own and parental incomes account for a large share of the racial contribution gaps. Tax and employer matching subsidies further amplify these saving differences by channeling more resources to those who save more. We estimate that breaking the link between contribution choices and saving subsidies, through revenue-neutral reforms, would significantly reduce racial gaps and intergenerational persistence in wealth.

Pulsar timing arrays use observations of millisecond pulsars to detect nanohertz gravitational waves. The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) Collaboration has recently released their 15-year data set containing observations of 68 millisecond pulsars. These data contain evidence for Hellings-Downs correlations, which are characteristic of a gravitational wave background. In this talk, I will present these results, and discuss the spectral properties of the signal and implications for the astrophysical source. I will also discuss prospects for detecting other types of gravitational wave sources with pulsar timing arrays, including individual supermassive binary black holes.

Given a Noetherian local ring (R,m), one might ask whether there exists an R-module M and a system of parameters on R which form a regular sequence on M. Furthermore one might ask whether such M can be chosen to be finitely generated. Modules M satisfying these properties are called Big and Small Cohen-Macaulay modules, respectively. This talk gives a brief historical overview of progress on two major conjectures regarding the existence of Big and Small Cohen-Macaulay Modules.

The arc space of an algebraic variety parametrizes formal germs of smooth curves mapping into the variety. It is an infinite dimensional scheme whose geometry can be used to analyze and control invariants of singularities. Traditionally this is done by focusing on the topological structure of arc spaces, but recent developments suggest that its scheme structure (its singularities, its non-reduced scheme structure) should also play an important role. For instance, embedding dimensions and codimensions in local rings of arc spaces are related to the computation of discrepancies and to a theorem of Drinfeld, Grinberg, and Kazhdan (DGK) on formal neighborhood of arcs. In collaboration with C. Chiu and T. de Fernex, we have been developing a toolbox for the study of the scheme structure of arc spaces and jet schemes. The starting point is an explicit formula for the sheaf of differentials on the arc space, which leads to new results (a converse to the DGK theorem, the control of arc fibers, and a description of Nash blow-ups of jet schemes) as well as simpler and more direct proofs of some of the fundamental theorems in the literature (numerical versions of the birational transformation rule in motivic integration and the Denef-Loeser lemma, and a new proof of the curve selection lemma for arc spaces). In this talk, I will give an overview of the latest developments in this area.

Cobalt Photoredox Catalysts for Selective Radical Trifluoromethylations (March 20, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110347 110347-21824803@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 20, 2024 4:00pm

Direct trifluoromethylation of unactivated C–H bonds offers a powerful, atom-economical route to CF3-containing molecules of interest in pharma and agrochemicals. Photoredox methods to generate electrophilic •CF3 are robust and powerful, but outer-sphere methods suffer from the lack of selectivity inherent to •CF3 radicals. Organometallic approaches suggest solutions, but metal-catalyzed trifluoromethylations are frequently challenged by the intrinsic properties of the M−CF3 intermediates. Whereas early transition metal M−CF3 bonds readily undergo α-fluoride abstraction to generate difluoromethyl carbene complexes, M−CF3 bonds to low-valent later 3d metals are often thermodynamically robust and kinetically inert. We have developed a photoinduced method to activate thermodynamically stable Co(III)–CF3 bonds for selective arene C–H trifluoromethylations. Central to this strategy is the capacity of pincer (OCO)Co complexes to function as combined chromophores and organometallic reaction centers. Low energy visible light capture leads to intramolecular LMCT from a redox-active [OCO] pincer ligand to Co, which destabilizes the Co–CF3 bond toward homolysis and release of a persistent •CF3 radical. The capacity of the Co(II) byproduct to catalyze H2 production permits direct arene C–H trifluoromethylation without a sacrificial or substrate-derived oxidant. This seminar will describe our recent extensions to photocatalysis and ongoing efforts to elaborate regiospecific radical substitution via intramolecular photolytic arene C–H trifluoromethylations and alkylations. Structure-property relationships will be presented, which are guiding new ligand designs and establishing design principles for next generation base metal photocatalysis.

Order collaring, the automatic conversion of default market orders into limit orders with 5% spread over prior prices, has been utilized at Robinhood to protect retail investors from trading at unfavorable prices. In this paper, we provide empirical evidence that this policy harms retail traders in the form of higher trading costs. Using two quasi-experiments involving Robinhood’s trading hours and the discontinuity around 5% spread, we find that Robinhood customers have higher likelihood of paying extreme spreads over close prices. Further, the policy is associated with extreme price movements in stocks. We estimate that the economic loss of the retail traders due to order collaring is on the order of millions of dollars per day.

Thurston revolutionized the study of diffeomorphisms of Riemann surfaces with a myriad of tools: hyperbolic geometry, geometric group theory, Teichmuller theory, and much more. One goal of this work is to see how much of his vision persists in higher dimensions. In this direction, we will discuss a smooth analog of the Birman-Hilden theory for certain 4-manifolds, and its applications to Nielsen realization problems. Time permitting, we will also discuss related joint work with Seraphina Lee and Tudur Lewis on the geometry of other 4-manifold mapping class groups, via moduli and reflection group theory.

Daniel Lidar, Viterbi Professor of Engineering at USC, will be presenting "Demonstration of algorithmic quantum speedup" as part of the Quantum Research Institute's winter seminar series from 11am - noon in the Boulevard Room (1st floor) in Pierpont Commons. A Zoom option is also provided.

Seminar Description:

Despite the development of increasingly capable quantum computers, an experimental demonstration of an algorithmic quantum speedup employing today's non-fault-tolerant devices has remained elusive. In this talk, I will report on three very recent demonstrations of such a speedup, focusing on how solution times scale with problem size. Two of the demonstrations use IBM’s superconducting quantum computers and involve modified versions of foundational black-box quantum algorithms. In contrast with recent quantum supremacy demonstrations, these quantum speedups do not rely on complexity-theoretic conjectures. The third demonstration uses a D-Wave quantum annealer and involves approximate optimization in the context of spin glass problems. In all cases, our work incorporates tailored quantum error suppression methods, which we found to be necessary in order for the quantum speedup to appear.

Learning and Expectations in Dynamic Spatial Economies (March 21, 2024 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/118958 118958-21841949@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 21, 2024 11:30am
Location: Lorch Hall
Organized By: Department of Economics

The impact of shocks in dynamic environments depends on how forward-looking agents anticipate the path of future fundamentals that shape their decisions. We incorporate flexible beliefs about future fundamentals into a general class of dynamic spatial models, allowing beliefs to be evolving, uncertain, and heterogeneous across groups of agents. We show how to implement our methodology to study both ex-ante and ex-post shocks to fundamentals. We apply our method to two settings: an ex-ante study of the economic impacts of climate change, and an ex-post evaluation of the China productivity shock on the U.S. economy. In both cases, we study the impact of deviations from perfect foresight on different outcomes.

This talk is presented by the International Economics Seminar, sponsored by the Department of Economics with generous gifts given through the Economics Strategic Fund.

Curtis Center Health Equity Seminar Series (March 21, 2024 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119701 119701-21843426@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 21, 2024 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: School of Social Work

Our next Curtis Center Health Equity Seminar Series features one of our esteemed External Advisory Board Members, Dr. Derek M. Griffith.

His talk is titled, A Vision for Black Men's Health and Well-being.

Dr. Griffith will discuss the fact that in the United States, federal policy and infrastructure fail to explicitly address the poor health of men, and particularly the poor health of marginalized men. This inattention to men’s health hinders the nation’s ability to improve population health, to achieve gender health equity, and to achieve health equity more broadly.

Expanding efforts to consider gender in federal policy and infrastructure to include men, naming men as a population whose poor health warrants policy attention, creating offices of men’s health in federal agencies, and utilizing an intersectional lens to develop and analyze policies that affect health would likely yield critical improvements in population health and health equity in the United States.

Using data from the CDC and the case of Black men, Dr. Griffith will illustrate the persistence of sex differences in mortality and leading causes of death and the importance of an intersectional approach to achieve gender and racial equity in health.

This event is free and offers 1 CE credit! The Continuing Education option is free, but requires participation in interactive elements and completion of evaluation following the seminar.
